5/22/41 British advance against Italians

0400 Hours

We are lined up in a three company front. We will jump off before daylight to advance against the Italians just outside of Michili. Canadians will have the north flank B will be in the center and A will take the south flank. A only has to move 50 yards to be on top of there objective. It sits on the south west slope of a small hill. After taking it they will move up on the first tier of this hill and set up defensive positons on the western side. they are to hold until relieved and take out any Italians as they come over the top of the hill towards the southern flags. This will also give them a good fire lane to help A in the center as from this hill they can look down into the small valley where the center flags are located.

B has to move forward about 250 yards to reach there objectives. It sits on the se corner of a small hill maybe 500 yards north of the south one in a small valley behind this hill. They are to take the summit of this hill and hold and fire down on the Italians as they counter attack our efforts to take the center flags.

The Canadians in the north have at least a thousand yards before they reach there objectives. They sit behind a small hill thay must cross in there push east towards the Ities and Michili. They are to move east and take the crown of the hill then hold and fire down on any Ities as they approach the flags. After securing and when they think it reasonable to proceed they are to come down off the hill and take the objectives. Once thay are taken they are then to head se and move into the rear of center and help A as we believe this is where the bulk of there forces will be concentrated.

0435 Hours

At 0400 hours the whistle was blown and we climbed out of our fox holes and began our move forward. In the grey still darkness we looked like ghosts as we began this day to try and move the italians back for good this time. As we move forward in a crouch run type movement we know they are there just not exactly is all. There is no doubt in our minds we can beat them just as we did several months ago. Just who will be standing is the question on all our minds im sure as we move out into the dark expanse of this desert.

A in the south has taken and secured there objective. they are holding and have repulsed several attempts form the Italians to take it back. they have knocked out at least five tanks and several trucks and armored cars. Our 8 inchers have been laying down a constant barrage on the eastern slopes of the hill. Im sure it is helping as not much in infantry has reached the top of the hill.

B in the center has taken the top of there hill and have come under heavy armor attacks since getting there. They are holding still and dont seem to be in too much danger of losing the top of the hill. A in the south has been laying in a steady barrage of fire up the valley at anything that moves into it. They have taken out at least 20 tanks with this fire. And B on top of the hill has been able to deal with any thing that has reached the top of the hill. As we suspected the largest part of there force has been concentrated against B Company.

C in the north have taken the western slopes of there hill. They have not run into much of anything up there. Maybe 3 squads of Italian infantry which tried to take the objectives but where chased off with no loss of life on our side. Took two of the trucks out that had transported the Italians up north. Also got a small armored car a few minutes ago that came around the se tip of the hill. On a scouting mission i guess think we got them before they sent out any kind of report. We will hold the hill for another 15 minutes if no one shows up they will move down the eastern slope and take the objectives then begin there move se towards the center.

All in all things are going the way we had expected them too. Lost atank to a 75mm shell few minutes ago. Lucky shot was all it was. Hit a jerry can some one had forgot to move off the top after filling the tank up. It split apart and spilled the gas down into the open hatch. The gunner was smoking at the time bam they are now a part of history. Everyone keeps saying smoking will kill you just never knew it to be true until now. Im going to have to cut back or quit before something like this happens to me.

Our advance is moving well. We have taken all the forward objectives and have begun the push towards the rear one. The italians launched an armor counter attack about 20 minutes ago against B holding the center area. They sent in at least 30 tanks trying to retake the objectives. Sgt Sparks holding the center of the line bravely assaulted several tanks. His squad managed to take out 2 of the tanks and hold until our tanks could move up to support his squad. it was touch and go there for several minutes until we finally got the upper hand. If it wasnt for his squads bravery our line would have broken im sure. You have to understand sgt Sparks he is from the old school. he is a plug tobacco chewer and always has a chaw in his jaw. What with his hob nailed boots and the big lump in his cheek he is quite an imposing sight. His squad said after they werent sure it was his tommy spraying all over the Ities are his tobacco spraying all over them that did the trick. What ever it was He earned himself a nice medal for his work today.

Another man who did more then his share today has earned him my respect and admiration. 1st Lt Elster from D company. Driving the Hq tank Got his 56 and 57th kill in that fracus as well. He is our highest tank ace we have to date. They have so many white tank emblems on the side of there tank it looks like a white washed fence from back home. Once again he put his tank out front and got in amongst the enemy tanks with complete disregard for his own life and those of his crew. His tenacity saved the day for us. when all seemed lost these men and all the others jumped in where they were needed the most.

Today has proven to me we have the best fighting force in the world. There is no one are nothing these men can not defeat once they have set there mind to it.

We have at least a thousand yards to get to the rear objective. We are now meeting only rag tag bits and pieces of companys. A depleted company tried to make some sort of an assault on our southern flank but where taken care of almost immedatly. They were either killed outright or chased off to the east. A sapper squad surpprised a 75 MM sp On our north flank. they blew it to smitherins and killed the crew in less then 5 minutes. We have also caught 4 or 5 brixia mortars out in the open these were dispatched without too much trouble as well. trying to bring the line back into some order before we make any kind of major push to the rear. The north flank has begun to push SE so as to push anything on the fringe down towards the middle where we can trap them. Have moved 2 of the platoons of tanks on the north flank down towards the middle as they have not been running into anything to slow them down. Still running into a loose tank here and there that was left over from there assault before. These are picked off with no loss to our side.

0545 Hours

It is starting to come up daylight very soon. For a lot of italians the day is already shot for them. We have taken out over a thousand men and at least 50 tanks. Dont have the full reports as yet. Tanks lay all over the bettlefield torn and rendered asunder making mishappened shapes in the grey light of dawn. Men lay in grotesque tanglements with the armor. Lying where they fell defending what they thought was right. We are slowly moving thru this terrible landscape as we persue what we think is right. It is all in shadows but soon the sun will rise and point out to us the hell we inflicted just a few short minutes ago. Then and only then will it dawn on us the horror of war.

The rear objective sits on the se corner of a small hill maybe 300 yards acrosss the top. maybe 200 to 300 yards west of this hill our south flank ran into at lesast 2 compainies of Italians. they made a brave attempt to mount some kind of static line to stop our advance. It was pointless they never had a chance. Maybe 2 or 3 squads managed to escaape our onslaught. We are now in hot pursuit of the ones that got away from our relentless fire power. We lost a bren LMG and a Sapper squad lost all there men except for 3 who survived a HMG that caught them out in the open before all our men opened up on them. A tank took out 2 HMG squads it was 1st LT Elster getting his 57 and 58 kill. He is a one man wrecking crew.

The Canadians in the north caught 2 more 75mm guns and tore them up with no loss of life to our side. really surprised them for sure they never got a shot off. One was a sp and the other one was a towed type. They took out the crew of each gun then moved up and spiked the barrels of both guns. They also took out 3 more of those pesky Brixia mortars heard the men let out a heck of shout when those went up. Id say some where like 15 pieces of artty has been blown up on our move towards the rear flags.

Today has put a hell of a dent in the Italian war effort. After today it will take them some time to recoop. May not hear from them for a long time. Not sure as yet but think our armor losses has been kept below 3 tanks and maybe one ATG. maybe some where around 100 men if that many. We have less then 600 yards to finish this up today. Hope we get a few months off after this one today. The italians will need more then a few months to mount any kind of a force again after today.

Once again we have beaten the italians soundly to say the least. We lost 88 men while taking down 1617 of theres they also lost 10 trucks and 27 Artty mostly of the brixia mortar type. We took the rear objectives without too much of a struggle. Although a company put up a last ditch stand right at the flags. But were soon overrun by our very pepped up guys. They simply over whelmed them. We had way too much and they had way too little.

We are too pack up and prepare for an assault once more against the italians at Bir Hacheim. They just will not give up and continue to try and stop our march thru Libya. It is not set up to go until next month. So we have some time off to repair our equipment and get ready for the mine fields. We have been told we will get at least 6 more platoons of engineers and maybe even some of those mine clearing tanks to help us cut our way thru the mines. As long as we can get thru within an hour of starting we have a chance to tear the Ities a new ass once again.

Was able to replace 2 of our tanks with the new Matilda III. The one with the Howitzer instead of the 2 pound gun. It is still early in the morning and must get the troops fed as im sure they did not eat much before we started today. I guess we have been lucky in that we have not faced the Germans ever since we got here. But im sure one of these days we will have to go up against there much heavier tanks. that will be the day when we find out just how good we are. All in all it was good day for us and the men really showed what they can do. I am very proud to be in command of such a great group of guys. They almost run there selves and I am only there for show.
