Serious proposal 2 (variation on the red flag with cross) :

Edit : With the red that should be less red, something in the middle #2 & this one.

Both nomination #2 and #3 need to have their crosses buffed and polished. And Patrice wants the red modified on #3. But for our purposes here, this should be good enough.

I will include all three with the game when it ships, so you are just voting on which is the default. 1 vote per person.

I'll close voting in 48 hours.

If there is a tie, I'll cast the deciding vote.

No option for the plain tricolour, considering it's the only one of the options thus far that was actually an official state flag within the expanded time frame of the game system?

You make an excellent point. Though MWIF Product 1 won't have scenarios that start after the tricolor came into use, Patton in Flames will. It should be added to the list of flag choices that ship with MWIF.

I'm voting for #2.

I will make the following points:
1) Option #1 risks the black cross blending with the black upper background when it is presented in a reduced size. Perhaps the white outline could be thicker?
2) Option #2 has a textured finish while the other two are just filled blobs of color. Any chance of the texture of the other two flags?

The white circle background for #1 is a good idea. With or without I would vote for #1. And a little texture would be nice indeed.

I believe a simple design works best as its to be used as a rather small icon on the screen - much smaller than depicted in this thread.

I vote for 3 because :

Flag 1 is the flag of the Kriegsmarine in WWI.
Flag 2 is the modificated flag of the Kriegsmarine in WWII (I believe).
Flag 3 is what is the closest to the actual Nazi armies' flag, and when the icon will be small on the map it will be even more close, and will convey imediately the information that the hex is German.

Anyway, I will change anyone you put in MWiF to put one with the svastika, as I don't think that you fight ideas fighting their logos, while understanding that a professional computer software must obey to the laws of the countries in which it will be sold, even if they are silly.

Cheers !

1) We are talking about two different (plain) tricolor flags here. The old black white red (which I vote for) and the new (BRD) flag of black gold red. The first has it's origins in prussia, the second in southern Germany, the first was also used in the inter war period (iirc).

2) The first flag listed here by Steve is indeed a WWI era flag, but not the navy flag (that's another one we could not use as it's a prohibitted symbol in Germany (as it's commonly used by Neo-nazis)). The second is I believe indeed based (replacing teh swastika) on the WWII navy flag. The third is obviously a likewise adaptation of the Nazi party flag...

3) I know of at least one game where there was some trouble because of a Nazi flag/symbol that was modded into the game (at least I seem to recall such). So once the game is out I'd recommend not posting such a mod on the official website at least, just to be safe.

P.S.: As a kid I used to build plastic models (I bet most here did), here in Luxembourg many products are imported from Germany, including at least one hobby store's models of the time. I always got pretty peeved when they started selling models where any swastika or "balkenkreuz" decals had been carefully blackened out. Such a stupid thing to do, but it perfectly fitted that German law (after all, modelling is a recreational occupation (for which use of nazi symbology is outlawed...), if only the shop clerks in Germany had understood their law did not apply to products intended for export (today I'd take the products back to the shop and ask for a refund).

I will vote for #1 simply because I think it isa the most appealing to the eye (but then again I will change it when I get the game anyway..)
