Wake&Marcus

Post by Mark VII »

The whole thing was a curious affair? He arrived with many AK's supported by a nice surface combat force with four BB's. There had been no air recon so the BB bombardment was not that damagingl. He also did not seem to bring alot of infantry unless they were the ones to suffer during the landing from my newly arrived CD unit. Don't think he was expecting how much I had defending. Marcus Island had also been recently reinforced so the raiders from the subs had no chance(they surrendered during the first Japanese attack). I flew in some Nells from Kwaj and they started hitting AK's. The navy fled and now the mostly engineers and aviation specialists are on their own.

I wondered if this was some kind of diversion to lure KB away from the South Pacific but nothing has happened back there?

Hmmm.....is it not a bit early for the Allies to be going onto the offensive?

Rangoon Surrenders 3/18-3/19/42

Post by Mark VII »

I was wrong on how long it would take before Rangoon would surrender. Only one day!!! Guess I should of attacked sooner? The shore and air bombardments were far more effective than I thought, they most of been out of supply. Rangoon is totally intact with plenty of supply left behind.

The thing about this massive Commonwealth surrender is whats guarding India now? The list of destroyed units at Rangoon: 17th&23rd Ind Div's, 1st&2nd Burma Bgd's, 13th&16th Ind Bgd's, 2nd Burma Rifles, BFF Bgd, 254th Ind Tank Rgt, 3rd Carabinner Tank Rgt, 15th&28th UK Field Arty, three Base Forces, the 1st BAF AA and the Rangoon Force CD are all gone. Back a month ago these other units surrendered near the Salween River: 14th Ind. XX, 44th Ind. X, 255thInd Tnk X, 1st UK FA Rgt, A'Ind FA Rgt, and the 21th,24th and 25th UK Mtn Arty Rgt's. Thats alot of units that started the war in India who are now gone. Hmmmm, wonder whats defending India?

The plan in China is starting to work as Yenan is captured with out much of a fight. There have been some other minor battles where the Chinese have forced a Japanese retreat but nothing has been lost.

After the Americans suicide charge yesterday at Marcus Island, whats left surrendered on the 18th with no loss to the Japanese. The last straggler from the Wake Island invasion force is hit by some Nell's so the ground forces are left to fend for themselves.

One of the two NZ regiment's on New Caladonia surrendered so just one left at the North end of the Island.

Changsha taken 3/20-3/21/42

Post by Mark VII »

The Second Battle of Wake Island is winding down. Soryu, recently repaired from her Dec 10th bomb damage sortied a day after the American landings from Tokyo. The American Navy pulled out of Wake just in time to avoid her airgroup, she now catches a bunch of AK's just West of Midway and reminds the Americans who is in charge of the Central Pacific! Search planes from escorting Mikuma spot Colorado 120 miles SW of Midway making about 2 knots heading SE. As the pilot is radioing the contact report she slowly rolls over to port and promptly sinks. Score a battleship for the two RO subs!

Changsha is captured easily on the first day of the assault!

A couple of days with nothing major happening but the normal ground and air operations that happen every day across the map.

Its about this time that Operation TE is hatched by some brainiac back at Combined Fleet HQ. Trimcomalee is "TE" and air recon has told me that only one ground unit is present presumaly the BF that starts the was there. Since the "A" Rgt of the 21st Mixed Bde is loaded on AP's and heading for Rangoon, why not divert them to Trinco as maybe a prelim for an invasion of India. Basically gaming the situation since if we land and attack before April the Japanese Amphibious Bonus will still be in effect.

The AP TF turns to the left and heads for her new objective supported by 5 BB's and 5 CA's in two TF's departing Rangoon. Mini KB(Junyo, Ryujo, Zuiho, Shoho and Hosho) is currently West of Java looking for Allied supply TF's but turns North heading for the SE corner of Ceylon. Mini KB should arrive as the 21st Bde starts to land.

Well the Japanese experienced a spot of trouble in there attempt at an early conquest of India. Admiral Willis and the pride of the Royal Navy joined the party. The remnants of the Japanese fleet are now in full flight back to Rangoon Minus a BB at least 2 other BBs are candidates for drydock in Japan I think 2 CVLs with will also be heading for drydock one may not make it 3 CA`s are hurtin bad, at least 12 DD`s will not be returning to the homeland, the invasion force has also run into a armored unit at Trimcomalee. The Brits lost 3 CV`s but as we all know they will be replaced. Winston is proud of the sacrifice the Royal Navy made India is a lot safer now. I will let Mark VII post the combat results.[:D][:D]

Battle of Trimcomalee3/26-3/27/42

Post by Mark VII »

Very busy two days to say the least!

The whole of KB has gathered 420 miles south of Midway. Last turn it is believed that American carriers were only 360 miles East of the half KB near Laysan Island. Decided to mass the KB into one hex in case the Americans came out to play. They did not! Instead swarms of B25c's escorted by P40B's fly the 420 miles from Midway in a futile effort to get some hits. Some 41xP40B's and 38xB25C's are lost to 5xZeros. Then 2 MSW's head south out of Midway and get clocked by the Val's and Kate's of KB.

Before we get to the juicy part, large amounts of oil and resources arrived in the first convoy from Palembang. Several more major convoys are en route from the DEI and others are loading. Supply and fuel in the homeland is looking good!

The key moment of Operation TE has arrived. The "A" Rgt of the 21st Mixed Bde begins to land at Trimcomalee. Two fast BB's and two CA's begin the show with a bombardment in an effort to slow down the CD guns. A AP is fatally damaged but the landing goes well. The surface escort of three BB's and three CA's runs into a RN TF consisting of the Hemes and a light escort of CLAA's and DD's. Ed says they should of departed Trinco but he may of made a mistake with their orders? The Brits are totally destroyed in a daylight engagement that lasts at least 35 range changes getting as close as 9,000 yards but averaging around 16,000 yards. However they do decent damage to the IJN BB's which is a surprise since the biggest RN weapon are the 5.5 inchers on the Hermes. Yamashiro comes out of the battle with damage levels of 66-28-42 which does not seem right considering only 8 hits from DD's(I think 4 inch guns). A DD is sunk and two others are in big trouble. I don't think I like the results of this battle as it will play a major roll coming up in the next two days. Mini KB is still slightly out of range but will be on station the 28th!

I saw one unit on Wake Island surrender and the rest were gone when I started my turn after combat. I wonder if they surrendered or were they evacuated by schools of subs?

Battle of Trimcomalee, Day 2&3

Post by Mark VII »

The Battle for Trimcomalee has become a disaster for the IJN. THREE battleships are sunk or scuttled to save some victory points. TWO heavy cruisers, a CL and NINE DD's also go down in what is the worst two days in the history of the IJN. The only saving grace at sea is the sinking of TWO RN carriers with only damage too TWO CVL's. The land battle at Trimcomalee also took a decided turn for the worse when a unknown second enemy ground was discovered and found to be a Tank Brigade. The "A" Rgt of the 21st Mixed Bde is in big trouble as a reinforcement convoy war forced to abort since the navy is hurting big time and forced to retire. How long will they be able to resist?

Basically, over two days of fighting(some crips cleaned up on both sides on day 3), the following ships were lost in three major naval engagements and the Battle of Trimcomalee decided. The Japanese lost 3xBB's, 2xCA's, 1xCL, 12xDD's, 2xPC's and some AP's. The Royal Navy and Allies lost 2xCV's, 1xCVL, 1xCL, 3xCLAA's and 7xDD's. This to me is a decisive British victory with Trimcomalee saved.

'BATTLE ONE' was a daylight surface engagement. Even thought the Brits were totally destroyed I call this battle a draw and at most a Japanese minor victory considering the heavy damage done to the IJN ships considering they were only hit by mostly 4inch guns and some 5.5 inchers.

'BATTLE TWO' was a carrier battle between the Mini KB and two RN carriers. This was a decisive Japanese victory with both Brit CV's sunk and only two IJN CVL's damaged with only one with serious damage.

'BATTLE THREE' was another daylight surface action involving my other surface force in the area. After watching half the first round I could not bear to watch anymore so no "hit counts" were counted as I hit the escape button to get the battle over with. A decisive Royal Navy victory that will be talked about for decades!

OK, lets call this BATTLE 3.1 as the RN BB's hit the follow up convoy after destroying the escort TF. The minor surface escort does a good job and mostly protects the transports from the limey ships only because the Brits were probably low on ammo from the first engagement.

What does all of this mean??? It means I screwed the pooch on this operation because I got over confident and pushed on even though I had some doubts about how my units were arriving at the target area. I think they call it "victory disease"! It was also the first time I've seen the RN in action (from both sides) and I got schooled in the concept of concentration of force. Wonder if things would of been better if I got a night engagement in battle 3.0?

Untill I can get some new surface ships over to the Indian Ocean, it will be difficult for the Japanese to launch any new sea invasions of India or Ceylon.

On the other hand, the Brits will have a hard time launching any long range invasions into Java or Sumatra since they no longer have any air cover that can be projected that far. This is provided I keep Nells or Bettys on station and no USN carriers show up to help!

Not much new. Damaged IJN ship units from the Trimcomalee disaster continue to attempt escape to Rangoon, most are making it! The "A" Rgt of the 21st Mixed Bde at Trimcomalee is being pounded from the air and is now under heavy tank attack.

The troop carrying Kanko Maru was heavily damaged at Trimcomalee so I ordered it to Mannargudi in the hopes that the troops will land and do something usefull. The Kanko Maru in her own little TF, somehow makes it under the radar and delivers her troops. The Chidori(also heavy damage) is sent North to hopefully divert allied a/c from the Kanko. The Chidori's mission is a success and her crew pays the price.

Up to this point in the game I figured I would lose. I fought a more aggressive fight earlier than I should have and have paid an enormous price in points. This battle just may be a turning point although I won`t know for sure until the 'fat lady sings' sometime in the next few years. It is early in our war and I have not begun to get the enormous resources I know are coming. Yes this may be my Midway or my Waterloo or My Stalingrad. I knew that the japanese were coming and I really had nothing to stop him except everything the RN had left in the area it was throw it all in or lose it all piecemeal anyway. I think I did what the British would have done had they faced the same situation
and it paid off. Now does anyone know where I can find a couple of used carriers.[:D]

Another low key turn. Shoho makes it to Rangoon with 59 flotation and starts pumping out(or up). "A" Rgt of 21st Mixed Bgd is fighting for its life back at Trimcomalee. The crippled Kanko Maru is found by Beauforts who have little problem with her.

The end has arrived for the valiant 21st Mixed Bgd at Trimcomalee. They can't take it any more and the men rise up out of their foxholes and in a glorious charge, throw themselves against the Tanks that have been tormenting them for the last 6 days. The results were expected but a far better way to die than being blown up by unseen ships or passing aircraft!

The ML Aotaka is ordered on a probable suicide mission to mine Mannargudi in an effort to close the straits to the Royal Navy. The Brits quickly discover that those floating round things with the little sticks pointing out sometimes go boom.

HMS Repulse which was already smoking when she showed up in the periscope of I-165 is now smoking even more. I-165 escapes with only minor damage.

Slow couple of days. The Battalion that took Mannargudi is getting pounded from the air and sea. A enemy ground unit is approaching so the end is probably near. IJA AF continues to suppress British airfields in the Burma area.

Elements of 1st and 2nd Para jump into Jorhat after repeated recon shows only one defending unit(assumed to be a baseforce). Intel estimates are correct and the Indian BF retreats in the direction of Ledo. Ledo is cut off from the rest of India and has three units defending. In four to six days we should find out what is there as I have a ground unit on the trail next to Ledo only ??? miles away. At Jorhat, it will be a race of what I can fly in to solidify the defenses from the expected counterattack.

Mini KB was ordered back to attack Trimcomalee from 240 miles with the hope of scoring a damaged BB or two but the boys get distracted by a Allied ASW TF and convert most of them to submersables. Then the damn weather gets in the way preventing port attacks on the 8th!
