Protectorate units not being counted for supply or forage

Post by Clausel »

I seem to be having a problem (or bonus effect!) playing Turkey in a current 1792 scenario 2.16 beta game where a large number of controlled minor units for Turkey are not appearing as a forage or supply cost in the supply report. For example in Wurttemburg (Turkish protectorate) where 2 Turkish armies were located I switched every unit plus army and corps to supply (with depot placed) to recover strength after a long conflict with France. Out of 30 plus units only 8 appeared on the supply listing (they didn't appear as foraging either). It wasn't just the report as my funds showed only a matching small cost reduction.

On checking I discovered that the only units being charged supply were pure Turkish ones - the others such as Wurttemburg, Serbian, Greece, Albanian etc did not appear. There were protectorate units on the forage section of the report including some for these countries (none appeared for Wurttemburg) but not all were there.

As a test I switched some Egyptian units which had appeared on the forage lists to supply (with a depot placed)and they disappeared from the list.

My guess is that this is linked to the introduction of feudal levies for protectorates. Even if supply is free for these units they should still undergo forage attrition when applicable. Also if they have such a unique ability we need to be able to identify them from other standard units.

The number of units being produced by protectorates do seem excessive and led me to greatly limit the number of pure Turkish units I was building as a consequence. I didn't realise at the time what an advantage they gave Turkey!

Protectorates pay the supply costs of their units -- it's one of the main advantages to using protectorate units instead of national units.

I believe that foraging casualties for protectorate units is reported, but it's at the end of the supply report in a separate section (the reports are written chronologically, as the turn events unfold, and the supply/forage rolls for protectorates happens later in the turn sequence).

We've lowered the feudal/protectorate troops in recent patches and we'll probably institute a limitation on their total number in the next patch. We've done most of our game balancing testing on the standard scenarios, which tend to be shorter games -- races to 1000 or 3000 glory points. In the shorter games, I think the protectorate/feudal unit levels are balanced, but in longer games they do tend to get out of hand.

Thanks. So its supply as well as upkeep. That does make protectorates even more attractive. I did notice the relevant section of the supply report but not all their foraging units were listed.

A maximum known limit (numbers and troop types) would be ideal - which when reached would halt further production until replacements are required. Even better if this could be revised during play to take account of manpower changes and barrack/factory developments.

A great game - keep up the good work. Its much appreciated.
