Invasion at Palmyra headed off?

Post by bwheatley »

My TB's did me proud today! I was just moving the langly to palmyra to refuel and it appears i spotted a mini invasion force there. I managed to bang it up pretty good and i'm going to head 3 hexs SE that should put me in range to hit it again next turn and also keep me out of sprint range of the fast movers at Johnston. I took a screeny of the sitrep will post in a sec.

You can see the SUb screen in place. Also where the langly intercepted the ships. If we close into battle i am not too worried the langely has a few 16 inchers with her to help keep her safe.

In the west coast i approved teh 15th (?) cst CD unit to ship out it left mare today should be to lahaina in a week or so. I'm hoping we can keep him delayed enough that it will help. If not i will land them at pearl. 18 255 Howitzers

I would rather have hit that AD though since its more valuable out here. But i will say that msw was valuable japan only starts with a handful of them and i'm hoping next turn to really smack around the AD. i'd rather take out the AD then the AP :)

whatever fits into 1 AP can't be that valuable but that AD can refuel hundreds and thousands of torpedoes which will sink my bb's fast :)

I was thinking of turning my bb ships for another raid but for now they will retire to PH.

I don't want to push my luck and be so far away from PH that i can't be saved.

***FLASH CLARK FIELD FALLEN***

Post by bwheatley »

Yes you read right Johns sneaky move to put troops into bataan has sealed the fate of 53,000 men. Without a place to retreat the men gave up hope and threw down their arms. The 15th Us RGT that landed at bataan is waiting for pickup to get the hell outta town. In another flash i didn't find those transports again i guess they went off to another location. I will keep langly around Palmyra in the hopes of dinging him up a bit more. John has made me think he plans not to take the hawiaan islands. But i think he wouldnt come all the way out with AO's without a plan to take kona or hilo.

There are 900 mines at lahaina now.

The US govt has asked the british for a fast transport fleet to remove the 15th US rgt from bataan and the british govt has agreed.

The fleet will evac the troops from bataan and will not engage japanese vessels unless engaged first.

If he tries anything funny i have 2 BB & a BC there to change his mind.

Carrier Battle

Post by bwheatley »

From John `
Carrier battle - 1 ac lost. Your 'superior' range almost won you the
day. Hm, didn't know
you had ac with a range of a whopping 2 hexes :p)
`
Yup i moved langly north to find that AD and came 2 hexes away from 4 nip cv's that were looking to find me!! Yikes. And an assortment of other heavy ships. I guess my intel showing his main fleet in Johnston was inaccurate. Weell no dice my boys came up close but no cigar. 1 AC lost.

I'm pulling back to palmyra at flank speed. I know he has his eyes on taking it so i can hopefully get back to palmyra and refuel and bug out towards rabaul until the situation blows over. I have my doubts about the path from Palmyra to PH being clear enough to sail through. This is the only CV i get for the better part of a year. And i didn't know all his AC only had 1 hex range until he told me. Thats a big advantage i can use for scouting. I don't want to lose it. I know hes coming in for HILO/KONA/LAHANIA at least. Because there is no reason to bring AO's out unless you want to party.

If he comes at kona we can have a BB screen jump in and wallop him and then jump out again.

It sucks how retirement is auto night fight. It should be that you can set it retire/day retire/night. I would like to have a day attack and then disengage without having to give up my day fighting ability. If i do no retire i'll be picked to pieces.

He took baker it looks like he will take all US islands for me to have to retake. A sound strategy.

That first fleet is his 4 Cvs with some BB's
The 2nd fleet is alot of CA's & BB's and TK"s :) he has some BB's guarding them too. So this time my fleets you see are 1 fleet of 2 BC and then 2 fleets of 4 BB's 1 fleet is 16 inchers 1 is 14 inchers. We're going for a night intercept in the current hex of the CV's. Hopefully we can hit something at the night and then retire to PH at flank speed.

Jhohn lost 5 BB/BC
5 CA
and 6-7 DD's

He was not happy i will post our conversation later.
I think he did what i did in my other game. He fought the allies on their terms. When i started to switch to gurilla attacks i was able to sink his battleships. I have 5 bb's with over 50+ damage. But i lost 2 DD's the whole battle :).

You're right...I was sailing towards PH to engage you in a decisive battle.
I had no intentions about invading PH - defeating the Pacific Fleet
would be hard enough.

Seems like you were keen on engaging my fleet as well cause we clashed
big time today : )
Our fleet were very evenly matched, both in numbers and force composition.
Great I thought, perfect - nothing better than a series of exciting and
decisive battles!

Unfortunately the night battles were extremely one sided and unbalanced.
I lost score of ships including
5 of my best battleships/cruisers!! I merely managed to damage a couple
of your bb's. I didn't even
care to watch the battles as my ships didn't hit anything...( If the
game got an Allied bias in surface
battles and Japan can't beat an evenly matched US fleet now they never
will...

This is a bit unfortunate since it means the end of Jap expansion: I
will sail back and fortify every
single island between the PI and PH. So no invasion of China or war with
Britain. I'm a bit afraid
that there may be many quiet turns to come.

I will of course continue but I'm a bit dissappointed in how the game
simulated todays battles - and
that will most likely not increase my enthusiasm for WPO : - \

send the turn :)
Yea i have found that night battles are teh real way to hurt someone. If we battled in day combat then we would have both been hurt badly. I learned the night attack tricks when billy was hitting me hard at night.

Its all about the leaders though i think aggression does crap. I go for commanders with HIGH naval skill becuase that seems to carry the day for me.

Night attacks really can go either way. If you had been the one to jump on me and caught me offguard it would have been slaughter on the high seas for me.

No worries my friend. In my game vs general billy i've lost 90% of my fleet down to 7 CA/CL and 5BB 2BC. I learned ALOT. I think there are some good naval fights to be had but you really have to understand the dynamics of ship to ship combat since its all ships and no planes. I was hoping my sub screen would tear you up too but i probably engaged you a few hexes outside the subs :).

I was jumping at the hex for your CV's did i hit them? I didnt see them moving i wanted to hit and run your CV fleet and retreate i did not want to engage your BB's because they are dangerous.

Though in night battles defense it is not always 1 side smacks the other. But it seems that getting in close in a night battle is the only way to really have a decisive battle in 1 fight. If you only lost 5 BB/CA then you are lucky ;) you still have a potent fleet you just have to wait for the right time. seriously i'll send you teh list of shit i lost with general billy. I was down to just 2 BB's and i started to fight smarter with night hits and i finally started to sink some of his ships.

I really wish there was a retire/day retire/night though. Sometimes i want a day fight but i want to retire afterwards instead of standing up and getting spanked. You only have so many shells :)

Oops forgot to attach the file!

You didn't engage my carriers - they were one hex away.
The night battles were fought on neutral turf and I had my best naval
commanders - surprised your fleets several times to no avail.
Didn't hit anything!

So I must admit that if I were to repeat the procedure I wouldn't know
what to do different....

In every night round you didnt get any good shots in? I've seen that as the US where japan got me the first round and just fucked my guys up and i did 3 other rounds and i just didnt get anythign right. It seems like the commanders get all shaken up from that first round and for the rest of that day they really suck at everything.

For best commanders though i always ignore aggression and make sure i have Good naval skill. Tanaka is a good commander because he is very aggressive with high naval skill but the other high leadership japs leaders are so so. in my experience anyway.

As far as I'm concerned you got your opponents by the ears if you
surprise them..if your ships then fail to score hits then there's something
else that's not optimal. Tanaka and Yamamoto are both good leaders,
can't remember the others but they all had decent naval skills. My
fleets had
more escorts than you did - but that shouldn't be a disadvantage.
Perhaps the game was made that way, but that doesn't make much sense either?

Something's just not feeling right about this! Possible that I've not
played enough WPO but the results were just too weird. If only one of my
fleets
had managed to defeat one of yours - but they didn't. 2 battlecruisers
and 2 destroyers against my best battleships and battlecruisers - they
should have
been shot to pieces.

ahh that fleet had 2 bc each with 35K speed so they are uber manuverable. also they had high skill low aggression guys.
I"m about to watch combat now. i'm guessing the BC came in fired for a few minutes and then bailed out instead of stinking around for the kill blow. Thats how i like my commanders to be. Aggressive guys stay around too long and wind up using all your ammon and gett killed

Tanker put up a topic on the forum about fleet comp.

4 BB 4 DD in a BB fleet
4 CA 4 DD in a CA fleet

so i try to follow that anymore then 8 ships he says you dont get the same bang for your buck.

I dont know how you laid your fleets out but i would try that. Dont give up this game is really great and i know you will rebound :)
you're probably just sending this to get me thinking i have you and then you'll spring a trap on me...i wont fall for it :P

Also i noticed ship calibur i only sent in my 16 inch ships ALL of them were 16 inch but a couple that were 14 inch.

Your bb's Hugua are 35CM which is 14inchs. YOu should use all your 41 (16inch) cm ships when you can.

It doesnt really matter in a night fight but it does count for damage the blows you got were just glancing. my 16inchers really tore through you though.

From JOhn

I've heard about the 8 ship rule and I don't very much like 'absolutes'.
Why should night combat be so different from WitP? They've not even
cared to come up with new leaders - they're using the same.

I actually hit and damaged one of your bc's - slowed it down - but 95%
of the shots missed.
Afraid I'm not going to return anytime soon with 9 operational modern
battleships. So until you gather enough divisions for a decivise counter
attack
there will only be minor skirmishes.
