RE: The Cautionaries: 8/19/22

Post by jwilkerson »

Our CA/DD group got no action this turn, the enemy tanker group went right through us ( a feature of the system - this happens a little too often - but that is the way it works ) we will try again next time - it is possible to get intercepts, I've done it many times in WITP ...

We have a CL/DD group topping off which will join the CA/DD group east of Eniwetok .. at this point with their dreadnoughts at Eniwetok that spot is not a good place for our small surface groups so we will continue hunting the supply ships.

Our dreadnought BB group ( 5 ) is still steaming east to rendevous with the AO group.

Our BC group ( with 60% ammo ) is still steaming north to the same spot.

What is that shifted-meatball--jap-flag mod you are using? [:)]

Nice AAR, btw. Think you spent less time on actual turns... [:)]

Diffferent flag is for other ( hypothetical ) scenario I'm working on - I guess I need to go ahead and create separate install for development ( like I did for WITP ) to prevent this from interferring with on going games.... will do so .. thanks !

Sorry for bad play - I'll try to do better ! [&o][&o]

Well, your score ratio is 10:1. I can't call it bad. [;)] After taking all Luzon I have just 3:1 in stock scen8...

I think I should try your mod as well [:)]

Scores between stock#7 and Cautionaries scenario cannot be compared .. the VP values of the PI hexes have been increased 5-fold for US in Cautionaries. The reason is in Cautionaries we wanted to place more emphasis on the importance of US retaking the PI ... once the US starts retaking PI hexes large amounts of VP will both come off the Japanese total AND be added to the US total .. so the relative scores will change quickly ( as they did when I captured Luzon ) ...

But I must capture Bataan pretty soon or it will be embarrasing !!

For today we will be withdrawing with the CA/DD group that engaged last night .. and sending in the CL/DD group that just topped off from the Repl group ... all nine of our dreadnoughts ( the 5 BB and the 4 BC ) will rendevous with the repl group .. and OBB group is proceeding to the rendevous from the West ...

The sub and mine support ships have withdrawn from Kwaj to Truk so we will position a couple of milch cows SW of Eniwetok to top off the subs as they move in on station ...

Does it has any historical background in that "highly historical" game?

Not really ... obviously we will be using historical equipment, circa 1900 .. but the background will be hypothetical .. I'll be playing this one with Scholl. But I do plan to create another "pseudo" historical scenario which will probably be called "The Thrusters" after another group of US Navy planners who tried to plan for the US BtlFlt to storm across the Pacific to rescue Manilla ASAP ( departing Pearl within 14 days of the opening of hostilities !!! ) that one should be interesting but I'd like to let the Cautionary scenarios run a little longer before we publish "The Thrusters" so we can levereage any corrections for both.

Also note that the "Cautionaires" that CAPT and I am playing is version 1.0 where the Japanese only had 15,000 PP at start ... whereas the v1.1 Cautionaries that Rysyonok and I are playing gives the Japanese 20,000 PP to start. There were about a dozen other small changes / corrections as well for version 1.2 which is the published version.

Well it's not a dreadnought - but hitting an AO in this scenario is pretty darn important ... so we're not complaining !

Small Victory !

This is probably the first turn in this game, that I would call a clear victory for the Japanese. We finally sank a dreadnought !!

I have been attempting to employ the historical Japanese plan which was to use the Marshalls as an opportunity to deploy their submarines, cruisers and destroyers, to wear down the enemy fleet as it marched across the Pacific, in preparation for the "decisive" battle closer to the homeland. And while thus far we have only gotten one torpedo hit by subs on a dreadnought ... this turn we got 1 torpedo hit by a DD ( from our CL/DD group ) which sank the Texas ( a New York Class dreadnought completed in 1914 ) ... and we also got a second torpedo hit from the same CL/DD group on the Idaho. So we have accomplished our mission in the Marshalls of sinking at least one dreadnought ( and we have gotten hopefully about 30-35 sys damage on 2 other dreadnoughts thus taking them out of the fight for 2-3 months ).
Our dreadnought report is that Ise is now at 5 sys damange and thus deployable - and Tosa has joined the fleet and is currently at Saipan. So we now have 11 deployables versus the enemy having 11 total less one sunk and 2 damaged, net 8 deployable. This is the circumstance we desire.
We lost 39 points ( 1 CL and 3 DD ) and in exchange sank a 164 point BB so roughly 1 for 4 .. we call this a victory !

Today is rough day IRL .. so no screen shots until tonight ...

We did another attack on Bataan with improving results - I feel like we can now predict that Bataan will fall before the USN arrives.

In the Marshalls we hit another dreadnought with a submarine torpedo ( the second such occurence in the game ) and this is the forth one knocked out in the Marshalls campaign ( Texas sunk 3 others hit by torpedoes ).

BATTLE OF ENIWETOK

Big day at Eniwetok ... we went in with 9 of our dreadnoughts and 4 pre-dreadnoughts ... and sank two US dreadnoughts and some smaller ships. At least one of our pre-dreadnoughts may not survive but this will not be clear for a day or so as the damaged ships try to make port.

Meanwhile the Allies invade Wotje ... taking their second base in the Marshalls.

And the SUNK report. Our fleet is now withdrawing having accomplished their design in the Marshalls. It remains to be seen what the price tag will be but thus far we have traded 3 CLs and several DDs for considerably more material including 3 dreadnoughts sunk and 3 damaged by torpedoes. But our price tag will probably go up in a few days ... at least 1-3 of those damaged BBs may not make it ... updates to follow ...

RE: The Cautionaries: 8/25/22

Post by jwilkerson »

Hi, well after discussions with the playtesters .. we have halted both of the Cautionaries games for scenario adjustments and restart.

The US Dreadnought BB reinforcement track will be accelerated to be aligned with more immediate sailing of the Atlantic fleet for the Pacific than is reflected in stock S7 .. thus all Atlantic Fleet dreadnoughts will arrive by the end of the year of 1922.

The PI defenses ( which were beefed up in Cautionaries ) will be reduced to historical levels ( which is actually a bit lower than stock s7 ).

But I enjoyed the 3 months of play that CAPT and I did complete on Cautionaries - it was a cliff hanger for me up to the very end. And for the Rysyonok game, the same - I actually felt better about the Bataan attack - in the Rysyonok game than in the CAPT game - but in the event the Arty balance was 4:1 towards the US even though the IJA had brought the entire inventory - this was most likely due to my beefing up the Coast defense guns too far ( as designer ) so they will be reduced back down.

Version 1.3 of Cautionaries will be up shortly. And then re-starts will happen.

Thanks for watching !

RE: The Cautionaries: 5/31/22 Restart !

Post by jwilkerson »

Ok, corrections have been made, to version 1.3 of Cautionaries, and games have restarted ... I am again pitted against CAPT(as USA) and with myself as the Japanese and I have started my troops a loading ... we will begin regular postings again shortly.
Also, CAPT has started a game versus RYSYONOK with CAPT as Japanese and RYSYONOK as USA.
