Fabertong vs Speedy: The view from the Pole

Post by fabertong »

Speedy and I have been playing 42a for some 7 months game time....It's 12 December 1942.......and after a fairly polite opening...things are getting Hot.........so Steven and I decided to share the next few months.....hope you enjoy.

The main reason for sharing (other than we are caring souls)...is we are about to recreate the Solomans campaign in the Aleutians......more on that later.......I'll post maps tonight when not at work.....

THE SITUATION:

Let's go round the map:
CHINA......I hold all of China except Chengtu,Chungking,Kunming,Kwiyang and Yunan.......Speedy is holding the line at Chunking 50 units....me prepping to cross the river.....and at Kwiyang....60 units being persued by 40 of my own.......sadly in taking the rest of the country I was unable to trap any of his units, so alot o fighting still to do....I'm bombing his supply.....China is all about supply........and feel I can take China from him in the next 6 months....we shall see.....

BURMA....locked in a stalemate at Myitkyina......about 2000 aps on my part he has slightly less....I own the base, but he is also dug in......He has air supremecy....d*mn those lightnings...though when he stands them down, if I'm carefull my Tony's and Tojo's take a bite out of p-40s....last turn I shot down 50 of his aircraft over Burma, to only 7 of mine.....but then I'm pulling back before his Bombers can destroy me on the ground....I can't fly when Lightnings around.....

MALAYA.....Backwater
DEI...........Backwater
Phils..........Backwater

South Pac....I took all of NG and the Sols with little loss.....Speedy withdrew for the most part.......now very quiet except Speedy has closed PM, gilli gilli, buna, lea....airfields by mass Heavy raids in rotation......Lunga airfield is open.....

CEN PAC......as historical

Which brings us to the Aleutians.......

SEE NEXT POST.....

SPEEDYS' ALEUT. OP.

I could see Speedy building up Attu.....so I invaded Attu and Kiska, and set up home....mostly snlf stuff.....+ base forces with about 90 Air support on both Islands.....

I could see cruisers moving in and out of DH...so I sent a strong carrier force with Junyo, Hiyo, and four CVLs to investigate....The result (well documented on these forums) was that I surprised Speedy while he was building an invasion force for ATTU....or to be more correct he surprised me.......6 US fleet carriers.....I lost Junyo,Zuiho,Shoho...and Ryujo...in return one bomb hit Enterprise......

8 days later I tried to hit his force while unloading at Attu.... Akagi, Kaga,Hiryu and Soryu fresh from a refit....attacked from the south.......the result I lose 3/4 of my airgroups to his 100+ wildcat CAP....he is also attacked by Attu and Kiska airgroups.....also decimated......another bomb hit or two on US carriers but no bad damage....and two BBs take torps.....again no serious damage.....

We are now locked in a struggle for Attu....He has landed a Div. + 2xReg.Com Team + Eng.
I have 3SNLFs 1 Coastal gun and " base force 7th and an IJNAF
I'm well fortified.....but lack supply so am flying it in from Pushmajiro (or whatever)

He raids with his carrier force 6 Fleet carriers often to stop supply runs.......but I caught Yorktown with I-36 three fish later and Speedy says she will sink...let's hope so.......

I'm rushing some more SNLF for quick support...there in 7 days......

Also the Imp. G. Div is moving to Northern Japan to join the 7th Div. in three weeks I'll have Musashi......and then will counter attack.....if only Attu can hold on..........

HOPE THIS IS NOT TOO WORDY....stay tuned.

AP Kogyo Maru looks like she might be having a spot of trouble. i've found that one hit from a 16" shell can ruin your whole day![8|]

Well, I fear Attu is lost........Speedy hit the island with a huge air and sea bombardment.....destroying what little supply I had.......he also landed 2 new Canadian Bgds.

I fear I'm too late.....I'm flying in supply and a SNLF is also being flown in........major reinforcements....both paras and the Imp. G. Brgd. still 7 days away........also approaching from the south is KB......her depleted airgroups reinforced, but not the force she once was.......he has 5 carriers operational.....I'll have 6......Surface TF under Tanaka...with Yamato, Mutsu and escorts three days away.....

If Attu falls then I'll have to suppress the airfield and build up Kiska.......Speedy is in the drivers seat on this one......the only mistake I can see so far is he hasn't as of yet landed any avaition support on Attu, so won't be up and running right away.

Troops on Attu......

If Guderian had been Japanese, I think the quote would have been more like this:

"Does anyone in Japan or the whole world for that matter, really care if we own Attu?"

Sing to the tune of "Man on the Flying Trapeze"
..Oh! We fly o'er the treetops with inches to spare,
There's smoke in the cockpit and gray in my hair.
The tracers look fine as a strafin' we go.
But, brother, we're TOO God damn low...

Rob, I've been pondering that myself.........but a bit like R.E.Lee at Gettysburg......."the enemy is there, and I'm going to stike him"(terrible mis-quote)...but you get the idea........and we all know how that turned out......

Speedy I think was drawn to the Northern route from early on.....Attu can bomb the Jap.mainland......and is supported by Kiska........although because of weather the airfields are only open about 40% of the time.......at first I thought this might be a diversion...But Speedy has commited far too many troops......so I think he means it......

BTW...Rob, you must be a either a night owl or a real early riser.....I make it about 4:30 am Chicagoland time

Another turn another mass sea and air bombardment.....supplies crushed....down to fort level 3 on Attu outnumbered 3-1.....I fear the end is nigh, and Guderian was right.......Now how best to keep Kiska........
