Campaign resumed

Post by Arstavidios »

Scout1 has stepped into the Mikado's shoes and the game is going on again.

Sorry Scout1 this is off limit for you.
Any evil yellow little Japanese spy found lurking in this thread will be eaten without warning by the Papuan security guards.

The Game is now nearing end October.

The Japanese have put their airforce to rest and are bracing themselves for the coming offensive.

The second half of the month has been devoded to the bombing of the Japanese forward bases.

Gilli Gilli is used to retrain my fighters in PM. It is under constant bombing from PM an Australia based B17.

In Midway 2 groups of B24s are bombing Wake.

In Darwin a group of US medium bombers is attacking the nearest Japanese bases.

In India I'm trying some runs on Akyab.

In China my spitfires are running out of targets 3 squadrons of sptifires have shot down over 300 Japanese aircraft losing less than ten aircraft to all causes.

My fleet is undergoing general upgrade so all operations are stopped.

Baker island has recieved its garrison and is buiding up its airfield.

In PH the AI is Hijacking my subs and sending them out as fast as they get out of the Yards.

The last troops from the West Coast wil reach PH in a couple of days and will head towards the South Pacific. In PH I've loaded a lot of engineers and base forces on transports. They are about to sail South. In need those troops for my offensives.

The assault troops are in their position and are preparing for their objectives. The ships are slowly starting to move to their assembly points. I have to concentrate the transports and the covering fleet. I need some more political points for some Australian units but everything is moving along smoothly.

My airforce is recovering from its heavy campaign over PM. The various P40 units are slowy recovering and some have started advanced combat training over Gilli Gilli.

P38 are arriving. One Fighter group has already been upgraded and is ready for operations.

I'm still short of fighters but the situation is improving. I need a good reserve to be abe to support the oncoming offensive.

I get about 300 front line fighters a month at the moment. I only have a reserve pool of F4F4s hurricane and Spitfires. P40 units are now a little over half strength.

I recieved two canadian squadrons of Hurricanes. I'll move them to PM and combine the with the Australian squadron of Spitfire and the quadron of Hurricanes. These are good planes for base defense and I have reasonable reserves of them.

Tokyo Rose annouces major IJN operations for the emperor's birthday

Post by Arstavidios »

The Japanese have just announced some major fleet operation would take place for the emperor's birthday.
Could be bluff, could something serious.

Humm, if something occurs I think it we be either an operation against PM or an attack on Midway or Baker island and my shipping.
The IJNAF broke its teeth on PM with entire zero and Betty daitais swallowed by my CAP in one gulp. I've been conducting intensive and unopposed livetarget practice there and the experience of my groups has increased. I have about 100 well trained Beauforts with experience in the 70s for all groups. My first P38 group is ready but low on experience. So I think I'm safe there.

Baker island and Midway are more at risk. He can take them if he wants them, but he will need to bring some troops.
PH is strong so an air raid would likely cost him more that what he would gain. I'm gonna reroute a couple of convoys to avoid all risk.

In China some Japanese reinforcements seem to be approching Wuchow. 5 new units have been spotted coming out of Canton.
Some zeros have appeared in Canton and massive air raids have started on my flanking force.

Hopefully I have massive reinforcements at hand there.

In New Guinea I've at least launched White. Naval reinforcement of PM. I will bring some anti aircraft units and a construction unit there.
the operation waspostponed due to KB raids on PM. This operation will allow me to test the Japanese reaction. I think my CAP cover is now strong enough in the area so that I can risk ships.

20000 Japanese machine gunned in Wuchow

Post by Arstavidios »

11/6/1942

The Japanese launched a shock attack against Wuchow and were blasted into pieces by the Chinese defenses. They suffered 20,000 casualties to only 2000 chinese soldiers.
SW of Wuchow chinese reinforcements are moving. I'm going to try to repulse the Japanese flanking force to cut the Wuchow army once more. Troops are moving. In the air my spits and Mohawks keep on killing Japanese aircraft in large numbers.

In India troops are getting organized properly into army corps.
There are corps in Calcutta, Dacca and Assansol. The Burma corp made of brigades is defending the border. A chinese corp defends Ledo.

The Chindits are in reserve in Karachi and a few units defend key bases.

In Australia, the First Australian corp is prepping for Gilli Gilli. The 2nd Australian division has not been released from Australia command yet. Transport are moving to Brisbane.

Troops are embarking for "White". 2 Australian AA regiments and an EAB will be sent to PM.

A raid on PM by a zero and a Betty Daitais was slaughtered. Only 3 aircraft survived. No losses on my side. I'm training my fighters on Gilli Gilli with good results. Their experience is rising regularly. I now have 100 P38s deployed. The P40 units are recovering.

My fleet is still in the shipyards after the October upgrades. I've recieved my first batch of auxiliary ships. They will soon reach PH.

Japanese ships have been spotted moving towards Midway. I've evacuated my ships and aircraft from there.

My subs are moving to their stations everywhere.

I think it will take several weeks before my fleet is operational again due to the upgrades. Repairs are proceeding regularly but most of my combat ships have upgraded. There are still many units moving to their positions anyway.

The first attack will brobably be launched in two or three weeks. Maybe less if things go well.

IJN Strikes Midway

Post by Arstavidios »

11/7/1942

The Japanese fleet struck Midway in force today. It had been evavuated the previous day when the first eneny TF was spotted. Two damaged APD that did not run fast enough were caught and sunk though.

I'm launching a raid against Buna airfield to kill his CAP here. My fighter strength is growing regularly both in strength and experience. My aircraft are geting experience through real action while the Japanese air force does not have any realaction training program. So Japanese aircraft get slaughtered each time they meet my airforce. I'mquitesure they have a significant reserve of trained navy aircraft but the recent raids were launched by untrained groups that have already been destroyed several times.

In India Chandpur is being built up to serve as an offensive base against Akyab.

RE: Things getting in motion 11/11/1942

Post by Arstavidios »

Things are starting to move.
India, Chandpur is turned into abase againt Akyab. One corp of 3 british divisions with assorted support units is moving there.
Alltheavaivable bombers are moved to Chandpur as well as some construction engineers and aviation units. I will base the British BBs there to make some bombardment runs.

In China I'ma bout to attack the force guarding The Japanese Eastern flank of the Wuchow offensive. Several fresh corps and HQs have arrived.

Australia. "White" is ready to sail. This small operation will bring a few reinforcement units to PM. An EAB and ac ouple Flak regiments. The EAB is needed in PM to finish the airfield.

Forces are gathering for "purple". The USN ships are coming out of the shipyards fresly upgraded. Transports are converging.
The assault forcewillbemade of the 1st australian corps. I won't have the PPs to release the 3rd division of the corps but that's not very important. Second echelon forces are currently moving towards their starting point.

Everything will be in place in about 6 weeks but I won't wait that long to launch "Purple" as the forces already gathered should be sufficient.

My submarines are spreading accros the Japanese shipping lines, I hope they'll manage to hit something.

The USN is starting its concentration in Darwin. Ships leave the shipyards regularly. A carrier TF has just left PH as well as a convoy including auxiliary ships and some aircraft. Convoysare being reorganised asthe DDs aresent to shipyards for upgrade and replaced by other types.

An other raid against PM on the 11th was gobbled up by my CAP. About 10 survivors out of about 55 aircraft only two kittyhawks lost on my side. My missions against Gilli Gilli continue,my pilots are getting some experience while the base is pounded to a pulp.

My subs are drawing a blockade line around the home island. Only one contact so far.

In China an assault to try to cut off the enemy forces failed. Losses were low on both sides. 741 Japs against 2662.My forces will recover in a few days. China is a stalemate so far. Some Japanese forces are moving near the border with Indochina.

"White" has been delayed two days as loading operations FUBARed. Things are now sorted out. The convoy will be escorted by Kittyhawks from Australia then by P38s from PM. The EAB will help building the airfield to its full size. From PM I will be able to hit Rabaul with 4Es.

The coming offensive will be directed against PNG and New Britain. Land forces will consist of 2 Australian and 2 American corps of 3 divisions each grouped in two armies. The Australian 1st army will deal with PNG, the US (8th or 6th don't know yet) army will seize bases in the admiralties and then in New Britain.

The navy will be organized in 3 carrier divisions of 2 CVs each and a BB force for surface combat and shore bombardment. There will also be ASW MSW and replenishment TFs.

Base forces and construction engineers are on their way. I have about 800 LBA in the area. An other 1000 should arrive in the coming weeks.

The first invasion should start as soon as the shipping is assembled. I do not have many APs but the first targets should not be heavily defended.

I'm short of HQs but I will recieve what I need as reinforcements in the next two months.

This is for SWPAC.

SOPAC, CENTPAC and NORPAC have one corp assigned to each for offensive operations.

In Australia I have the Australian 3rd corp and the Cavalry corp. I'm also preparing a composite force in Darwin made of Australian brigades supporded by the rangers and marine paras batallions.

In India the UK corp is starting to prepare for an assault against Akyab.

In a few months I'll move a large batch of US planes to India. C47, P40 and some bombers.

"White" has reached PM unmolested with supplies two Australian Flak regiments and most importantly an EAB, which will allow me to finish the airfield quickly.

Preparations are going on for "Purple". The fleet is assembling in Australia as the upgrades are finishing. A carrier division is underway. In PH an the West coast I have about 3BBs and around 20DDs left in the repair yards.

The rest of the fleet is either in Australia or underway.

My subs are reaching their patrol areas.

4 patrol Zones.
Japan
Wake
Baker islands
Midway

Two Large convoys are bringing reinforments to Australia.
Engineers and base forces, aircraft, auxiliary ships for the shipyards AR,AS,AD), escorts and minesweepers.

Around 130000 troops and 500 aircraft.

An other large convoy is bound for the West coast with empty ships.

The Japanese can muster 1000 lba in the Rabau New Guinea area. The KB can add an other 700 aircraft.

I'm planning to launch a major offensive against his land based air as the opening stage of "Purple".

My figthers in PM are gaining a lot of experience against Gilli Gilli.

My main problem so far is that I only have PM within range of the Japanese airfields.

I have more aircraft than I need but only one airfield to use them.

The P40 squadrons have been almost recompleted and I now have a good pool of F4F4 to support the operations. 100 P38 are available and I should soon have an other 2 groups ready.

In China the Japanese have evacuated Wuchow. The situaion is quiet.
I'm moving a few corps from the Wuchow area back in reserve. Some units have been worn off but they are recovering.

In India a bombardment TF made of British battleships and cruisers sails for akyab under cover of the 2 P40 groups.
The in Chandpur airfield is building up. I will launch the bombers in a few days. For the moment the weather is bad about everywhere.

I have no shipping available for an amphibious assault on Akyab yet. I expext to be ready around Mid 43. I will soften the Japanese defenses and prepare my troops in the meantime.

In the Pacific, my two convoys are slowly moving accros the Pacific. Still a few weeks before they reach their destination. Those forces are needed for "purple". I need the transports and the Aviation units and seabees. There are also some aircraft coming.

In PM "White" is still unloading supplies. I've ordered a sweep against Lae. This is the first move of the preliminary air campaign before "purple" is launched. The aim is to close the main Japanese airfields in the area: Buna, Lae and Rabaul. I'm sending a P38 group and 3 Marine F4F4 VMFs. The marines have been bombing Gilli Gilli for some time and have experience in the 70s.

The 4E from Australia have been ordered to join the fun too. I'm keeping the Beauforts in reserve. I don't want to waste them against land targets. Some groups have now their experiece over 80. I'm saving them for the Japanese fleet. Should it come within range it could be a nasty surprise. For the moment they keep pounding Gilli Gilli.

I will build up the other Two allied base in New Guinea SW of PM. One already has part of an australian base force. The other one will recieve a base force from Port Moresby. Those bases will be developped to their full capacity to support my offensive operations. The airfields can be built up to level 4 sothey can recieve 200 aircraft each.

The US navy is finishing it supgrades. For "purple" I will have
6 CV
10 BB
20 CA CL CLAA
50 DD
12 DMS

I have 3 BB and 20 DD in PH and the West Coast and a number of cruisers and destroyers in various TFs.

All Flushdeck destroyers have been assigned to escort duty

In China everything seems quiet.
In the South the Japanese have withdrawn to Canton. I'm sending a few units North just in case. In the air, my spitfires keep killing Nates Oscars and Sonias. Though I'm happy with the overall result I feel there is something wrong here with a 3 Sptifire CAP downing a dozen planes on a regular basis. This is far too bloody.

In India the Royal navy makes some bombarbment runs on Akyab under the cover of thunderstorms. The Japanese attempt a couple of strikes on Chandpur that are destroyed by my CAP.

Two large convoys have reached Noumea bringing in the long awaited aviation support units and construction engineers. There were also several HQs many aircraft and some auxiliary ships. The third carrier division which escorted those convoys has reached a shipyard and is undergoing some refits. In Noumea the units are being dispatched to their destinations.

In New Guinea the Japanese airfieldshavebeen closed. PM is now ready to recieve B17s. The next target will be Rabaul. The bombers will be ready in a few days and several more fighter squadrons have recieved P38s. With Rabaul airfield closed I will be able to launch my first invasions.

In New Guinea I'm getting the two small bases Thursday island and ??? operational. Aviation regiments and construction units are heading there.

In theCentral Pacific a Japanese light cruiser bombarded Baker Island. There might be an invasion coming. I don't know where the Japanese fleet is and it is currently at its peak. I still have only 6 US CV's while several Japanese carriers have come out of the shipyards.

RE: Situation 12/12/1942

My subs are deployed in 4 lines.
Main line is around Japan, Then outside Wake, outside Baker Island and between Rabaul and New Guinea. Many contacts outsideJapan but no success so far. Only a couple of Japanese ships damaged in a couple of months. On the other hand I don't lose subs either.

The Japanese sub fleet seems to have formed a picket line to give advanced warning of any invasion. At least one sub is operating off the Western coast of India. I have an ASW TF chasing them with no success.

I have an invasion corp loaded on transports. They are waiting for the end of the air preparation phase. That should take between ten days and two weeks to complete. In New Caledonia a US corp is getting ready for the follow up operations.

I've moved the SWPAC HQ to Sydney and have some ARs and and ADs heading there. This should a good repair facility for the fleet.

I will send some B24s P40Es and some C47 to India. I need those planes to support an offensive.

My fighter strength has recovered. Kittyhawk squdrons have been completed and Ihave more and more P38s available. I now have 2 groups and 2 squadrons converted. I will eventually have 4 groups and a squadron that is over 300 planes.

My air offensive is slowly wearing down the Japanese garrisons in New Guinea. They have no time to recover and they are in a Malaria zone. I have seen nothing bigger than a naval guard so far. My bombing raids are causing about 500 casualties a day. After 6 weeks, enemy units should be significantly reduced. Meanwhile my air units are getting valuable experience.

The main threat is the Japanese fleet which can carry about 800 aircraft. It can be supported by about 1000 LBA about half of them will be untrained.

However my airforce is closing Japanese bases near the front which means that the LBA threat will be reduced while I do have a strong Land based Airforce. Once my new bases are completed in New Guinea I will be able to field 800 aircraft there. Moreover the Japanese airforce has been badly shaken over the last few months and pilot quality has dropped significantly.

Preparations have advanced smoothly over the next few days.
The last units are toward their destinations. The invasion force has recieved 3 seabees and is now comlete. Two carriers and a few carriers coming from shipyards will join the fleet in two days.
A air HQ is is moving to PM and various construction units base forces and garrison troops are moving to forward bases.

I'm moving some PBY squadrons around to improve my coverage. P38 groups are repairing in Noumea. Once they are deployed at their base in about ten days, I will launch my offensive.

Japanese propaganda is talking a lot about an iminent operation. So far I have no clue about what it can be. There has been no Japanese air activity for several days now. I think an operation in the Central Pacific against Midway or Baker Island is a strong Poosibility. An opeartion towards Ndini is also possible and would be more annoying. Maybe this whole thing is just a hoax.....[8|]

I have no clue about the recent whereabouts of the IJN and this is annoying.

If the Japanese forces are commited in the CentPac, I will face little opposition in SWPAC so this could be a good thing for me.

I've just recieved 3 CVE in San Francisco. Another convoy is assembling there to bring the reinforcements to the front. My subs still don't do anything. Mid Ocean intercept of convoys does not seem to be a good strategy. I'm gonna move them to a position 2 hexes off the Japanese ports and see if it works better.

Christmas 1942 parties

Post by Arstavidios »

The main event was a great USAAF B17 party over Rabaul.
A little over 200 B17 took off from PM to pay a visit to Rabaul.
Around 200 P38 were supposed to escort them but they did not fly. The operation was a success. Enemy CAP was small and 138 enemy planes were destroyed, mainly on the, ground for the loss of less than a dozen bombers.

Meanwhile the naval phase of "purple" has started. 4 US task forces with almost the whole US navy have sailed from Sydney. 3 carrier and a BB TF. They will join the invasion force off Brisbane.

Meanwhile enemy forces are spoted on the kokoda trail advancing on PM while Buna seems to be empty. Two para marine battalions are put on alert in case this is confirmed.

In China a japanese force outside canton was attacked by a massive Chinese army and was forced to retreat. In Canton 75 enemy units are spotted.

Rabaul was pounded an other couple of days.
All in all about 300 aircraft were destroyed on the ground.
Purple sailed two days ago.The invasion force is made of two Australian divisions with armour and artilery. Seabees and base forces are also included. The transports are packed. the invasion fleet is escorted by about 2/3 of the USN. Target will be hit in about 5 days.

Two american and an Australian corp are available for the next moves.

Other theatres are quiet. The Japanes air force is only conducting a few training missions on minor targets. The japanese fleet has gone completely AWOL for several weeks,so I need to be careful.

So far my subs have merely been providing targets to the Japanese ASW forces.

In China I'm happy to stay on my positions. I'm moving a few corps North. Airfields are building slowly. The supply situation is good. The Chinese troops need some rest to recover.

If Purple does not end up in disaster I will be in a good position for 1943. I now have about 250 P38s and corsairs will arrive in a month.
the situation of the other fighter models is quite good. I'm only short of P40s.

Australia and PH are well stocked with oil and supplies. Merauke and Thusday island are building up regularly and will soon be operational.
The 4th Australian division is moving back to Darwin. I'm going to start building up the place. I have no spare HQ for there though. I might bring in a few troops and HQs from Australian and create a Combined Australian-British army.......

IT'S 1943

Post by Arstavidios »

1943 has been hit[&o]
Purple will be on target in one or two days. Rabaul was torched again by B17. Those werethen withdrawn to Australia and replaced by some beauforts and some fighters.

Tactical air bombardment from PM and carriers will start tomorrow. The BB TF shouldalso bombard tomorrow. Invasion force is now 5 hexes from target.

Still now news form my subs. USS Screwy, USS Rusty, USS Leaky, USS Cranky and all their friends are happy touring the Japanese coast, taking photos of mount fuji under the snow to bring back home.............[8|]

Japanese ASW forces don't even bother to hunt them down any more.

Purple hits target

Post by Arstavidios »

The invasion fleet reached its target and unloaded troops after an efficient naval bombardment.
45000 troops ashore 15000 still on transports. The Japanese garrison is small and in poor condition. It should be repulsed without trouble. A deliberate assault has been ordered.

Carriers head back home. PM is enough  to provide aircover and I don't want risk an encounter with the KB for the moment.
In a month I will be able to convert 3 kiwi squadrons to corsairs:)

I have a lot of P38 in PM but experience is low and they suffer horendous op losses. I need to train them.

RE: Gilli Gilli falls

Post by Arstavidios »

With the fall of Gilli Gilli purple comes to an end.
The next operation Crimson will see the Australian 1st army advancing on the North Coast of New Guinea towards Lae while an American army will advance towards Rabaul. Those campaigns will be supported by LBA and won't need the carriers. I will recieve my first X-Wings err Corsairs soon and in about 1 month I will have 3 corsair equipped Kiwi squadrons.

I will send the British corp and the 6th Aussie div from India to Darwin and create a 6 div CW army there. India is in good  shape and I'm not planning any offensive there before late '43. I will leave 2 Indian corps, the Burma corp, a Chinese corps and a combined reserve corp. In case of danger I can fly several additional chinese divisions into India.

In The Pacific the build up will resume. No change in the forces there.
Marine corp on the West coast, 1 corp in PH, 1 corp worth of RCTs quarding the Islands and One corp in the North Pacific.

I will build bases in the Aleutians to support my subs. Maybe they will hit something one day......

I'm planning to send some extraaircraft to India. P40E, B24 and C47. All in all about 500 aircraft.

Shipping is scarce at the moment. I have one corp size invasion fleet, and the nucleus of a second one. I also have a bunch of
AKs in India. I have about 250 ships moving troops and supplies around.

KB shows off Darwin

Post by Arstavidios »

While the Australians are finishing the occupation of Gilli Gilli a massive  Japanese fleet appears off Darwin. Looks like pretty much everything is present. Darwin was bombarded from sea and air. Transport fleets have been spotted.

In Darwin I have the local garrison of 1 infantry brigade and a CD unit, the 5th AUS division. The 4th is about 4 days from Darwin. Forts are level 8. I lost about 40 aircraft against a dozen.

This is a great opportunity for me. With Rabaul closed and the fleet away there's nothing to oppose me. I'm rushing the transports to Noumea to load all what I can. Ihave two divisions 90% ready for Gasmata. New Britain seems to be undended except for Rabaul. I'm gonna grab  all wahat I can before the KB returns. I have two para bns ready in PM. Gilli Gilli airfield is level 3 and fully operational. 100 aircraft are already based there.

Now is time to hurry.
