Hard to get any perspective, but it looks about the size of an msw, maybe a DD. My guess would be a PG from the PI.

The commander of "Crijnssen"used extensive natural camouflage and stayed as close to shore as
possible , only moving at night and managed to escape to aus.
2 other msw who left same day without this prep where sunk by jap planes next day.

Think you're right. USS Minneapolis, IIRC, was not as heavily damaged as N'Awlins, but enough so they had to camoflague here until she could sail home.

It does look like USS New Orleans. I think the bow is blown off in this pic.

I was going to say that the superstructure was too low to be the N.O. But, it's hard to tell with it being camoflaged. I'm starting to see some masts and stuff.

My guess is USS New Orleans.

Think its an IJN CVL or CVE hiding from hungry US dive bombers.

I have run across the picture and name recently, but too busy to find it. Will leave it for someone else.

And with all the stuff (Unless the photo caption is falacious...)

Image

BTW, the caption reads something like "Minesweeper Abraham Crijnssen escaped from the Indian archipelago to Australia disguised as an island". I am not sure what the Dutch call the Indian archipelago, but i am guessing it is the DEI.

I have a great fondness for the Dutch language. I had the good fortune to spend a considerable time working in Antwerpen (now my favorite city), where Flemish (a dialect of Dutch) is spoken. I was working on a project with colleagues from Belgium and Germany. One day we were analyzing the income statement of the Belgian company, and one of the largest items of expense was for "Huren", which is Flemish for "Rent". The German guys were very interested in this item, and wanted to know more about it.

"What did you pay so much money for?" the Germans wondered, snickering.

"It was for rent."

"And tell us, what were you renting?"

"We were renting space," the Belgian guys explained.

The German guys snickered some more. "And could you describe for us precisely where this space was located?"

"Huren" is German for "Prostitutes".

The funny thing is that german/dutch/flamish are mutch alike.
only writing/pronounceation and or meaning of letters and words differs.
The main part has a commen origin.
I can give some more examples of words that are commen in one country but
have a sexual meaning in the other but i think this thread will be taken offline then.
