Rice WAS in the SWC, and was where i went to undergrad school
ORIGINAL: dtravel

If Rice really wanted to make some money off their sports program, they could just disband the football team and rent out the stadium.

Well, athletics had a positive cash flow at Rice forty years ago anyway. For some reason, both Texas A&M and UT played Rice in Houston every year, and the statium was always sold out for both games. Kind of depressing for the home team however.

On the other hand, it was kind of like playing the Allies in the first year: One year in the 60's we actually beat A&M (the only victory that year as I remember) and everyone felt good for at least a couple of years.

Actually they do (or they did). They used to rent it out to high school football teams on Friday nights. It was truly amazing to me that a high school game could fill a good part of the stadium.

They also used it for one of the Superbowls.
My ex-brother-in-law was a big time highschool star football player. They used to routinely fill a stadium of 30,000. But football is HUGE in Texas. One time, his team even sprung a player from jail so he could play for the team in an important game.

Well, i don't know that they ever filled all 73000 seats at Rice Stadium, but i think they got crowds in the mid-high 40000 range most of the time (iirc).

How can you not be addicted to pancakes?!?! [X(][X(]
Don't you know that they are the holiest of foods? Strict followers of the Thread eat pancakes every Saturday!

Sorry, I'm not of the American persuasion... (he said, not really meaning that he's sorry)...
Yet surely you have pancakes in Denmark [X(]

Of course, but they're not three inches thick and covered in whatever goo it is you people put on them. And we don't eat them for breakfast.

Now this is strange - Pompack (who has been wiping the map with me in my PBEM) just informed me (in email) that he was at Rice just a few years before me![X(]

Very small world!!!

It's not the size of the list that counts, it's what you do with it.
