Adding Mega Campaigns?

Post by mamnich24 »

Dear Guys,
If I have SPWAW patched to 8.4 and I install the General's Edition, will it overwrite and take me back to an earlier version, and I'll have to repatch? If so, what do I need to back up to not lose current games in progress, etc.?
Thanks,
Mike

Hey Mike.

To answer your question...it depends. [:D]

If you only have a few games in progress and you haven't deviated much from the original install, i.e. haven't downloaded and installed additional campaigns or scenarios, you can back up your save file directory to a directory outside your matrix games directory structure (C:\temp?) and then copy those files back into your save file directory after you install General's Edition. If you have installed additional scenarios and campaigns, you might also want to copy those directories to another directory. Otherwise, you can just install General's Edition over the top of your current install--or delete the previous directory structure and install if you want a clean start. But if you aren't having any problems currently, I see no reason to blow everything away.

General's Edition comes with an earlier version of 8.x so you'll want to keep and reinstall the 8.4 patch after you install the software. I personally only upgraded to 8.3 because of some of the frustrations I've heard about 8.4, but regardless, you're going to have to install one patch or another.

Hope this helps.

Hi. A similar question. With the wife out of town I decided to clean up the computer, so I just upgraded to the 8.4v SPWAW. I was able to install my old version of the Watchtower mega-campaign but my copy of Desert Fox will only install in conjunction with SPWAW 5.0. There doesn't seem to be a seperate folder on the disk. Suggestion? Thanks.

Welcome back!

Install Watchtower and 5.0 to a different subdirectory. Then you should be able to copy the files out of the 5.0 MegaCam folder into the 8.4 MegaCam folder. I don't believe the Megacampaigns look for anything else other than files in the Megacampaigns directory. I could be wrong--maybe one of the folks on the design teams could weigh in?

Make sure you have the appropriate patches. Even if you have them installed, there will still be some OOB incompatibilities, i.e. some tanks may look like infantry and vice versa, but for the most part it should work. Enjoy!

IBTyrone...
Thanks so much for the help. When I installed Watchtower, it installed into its own megacampaign folder. I had to delete the megacampaign folder under SPWAW and replace it with the megacampaign folder under Watchtower. I then was able to add DesertFox to the megacampaign folder. Everything works!
For some reason, taking the data files from Watchtower and moving them to the original megacampaign folder in SPWAW didn't work. The program would only see DesertFox.

Thanks again.

No problem. Glad I could be of help.

Matrix probably changed how they handled MegaCampaigns between the release of WatchTower and DesertFox. I'm glad you were able to get both to work. Let us know if you have any other questions.
