You might like this one. PBEMAIL.

Six American BBs and one BC on the bottom. Man I love this game. I lost heavily in DDs and CLs but all capital ships but one old BB will make it to port.

Ok, since you all asked....[;)]......Here is the skinny. Let the above AAR serve as a testimony to Tankerace's sound advice. He made a solid case for smaller more numerous TF versus large capital ship heavy TF. My opponent had three or four very large TF in this battle with about 10 to 14 ships in each. I had about eight TF with not more than eight ships per TF and usually not more than three capital ships in any force. I was still outnumbered in capital ship by almost three to two but had a marked superiorty of smaller ships. DDs and Cls.

Now go down the AAR carefully and look at the results. Initially, the large American BB TFs came out farily well. However, as they began to accumlate damage, the smaller lightly armed TFs began to gain an edge. The greatest edge is the noticable advantages I was able to gain in surprise attack and attacks that gave me a tactical advantage. ie; crossing the T or very close engagement ranges where the capital ships were vulnerable to torpedoes. By the later rounds where the American capital ships were all damaged and many burning, they were coming into contact with fresh smaller TF and there was a noticeable shift in hit frequency and, even more important, Japanese torpedoes began to slam home in a big way.

Final results had the Japanese lost heavily in DDs -perhaps 10-15 dds and Cls sunk but every Japanese capital ship made it home-quite a few with no damage. No American capital ship escaped severe damage and a lot of them went to the bottom.

We were playing the American vs Japan two month scenario and there is a lot of action in this one. Both of us are new to WPO but he is my favorite and most experienced UV and Witp opponent. The game starts out with both sides having large invasion forces loaded and poised to land. Because the Japanese fleet is very much inferior to the Americans in capital ships, I choose to pull back my invasions and wait for results. My oppent went directly for Takao in Formosa and pulled of a very neat landing and knocked me out of there very quickly.

I was quickly behind in points and had little chance of dislodging his army from Takao. And the Japanese battleline could have no hope of defeating the massive American fleet. I had no choice but to try to attrition him. In spite of his success, my opponent was faced with a very tough chore. He had 90000 troops in Formosa but had to support them and supply them before he had engaged and defeated the Japanese fleet. I had a large airbase one hex away and excellent torpedo bombers. My goal then was to avoid a general action and force him to expose his ships to attrition with my torpedo planes and numberous subs as he had no choice but the keep large numbers of ships in the vicinity of Takao to protect his invasion force and resupply efforts.

The game was really won by my fine torpedo bombers and submarine commanders. By the time of our climatic battle, I had about 30 subs damaged or sunk ( I no longer think sub warfare and ASW is porked) and my airforce was decimated, but had they whittled down his fleet-especially the all important destroyers and was able to go into the final battle with numerical superority. I was still out numbered in capital ships but had a 2-1 advantage in DDs and Cls.

In the end, with the destruction of his fleet my opponent resigned as I had gained a large point advantage and did not even need to defeat the now doomed garrison at Takao.

So there are two lessons learned by both of us. One is that it is tactically a mistake to use large surface TFs. The are at a distinct disadvantage in a battle. This is not new. This was true even back in the days of UV. The second, is that any invasion-even if sucessful, is inviting disaster if you have not defeated or significantly reduced the fighting ability of the enemy fleet.

Hope this helps.

True, with the caveat that single large surface TF's can be effective if the enemy only has one or two TF's against yours.
