Advice needed for upgrade

I am currently playing (3) PBEM WaW games using 1.040 and would like to upgrade. The other players have all agreed we need to upgrade to fix bugs and adjust the victory conditions for future games. The games we have right now we would like to complete as is.

The question is which version should we all upgrade to? On the offical WaW web page is a download for Ver 1.040 which I already have BUT as far as I have seen versions 1.070 and 1.087? are still in beta test. I don't want a version that most people don't have yet so I've avoided Beta test upgrades. I've also never Beta tested before so I'm not sure if that's for me.

I was waiting for the "offical" WaW update for 1.070 but it still appears to be in Beta test. Now I even see on the forum talk about a newer 1.087 update.

Will the 1.070 update be posted to the offical WaW web page soon? Is the beta test complete and all the bugs worked out? Should I skip ahdead and download the 1.087 version and skip the 1.070 assuming I will be doing that in the nesr future anyway? How will the upgrade affest the games I have playing now? Should we wait to conplete the existing games and all upgrade on the same day then start new games?

I'm also having 2 problems saving games for PBEM.
1) sometime when I type a file name when saving all I get is 11111. In other words "XYZ" becomes 111 about 20% of the time. If I type over them enough times I eventually get the correct file name I want.

2) Sometimes my files end up as .bin instead of .psv What is causing that? I don't appear to have any control over the file type and once saved as a bin how do I convert it to the .psv?

Finally, a question. In some of the post I've seen comments about UN super infrantry. Do they mean Western Allies super infrantry? Wouldn't that be WA not UN? I agree that it is too easy to get them up to 9/9 or better.

By the way, I really enjoy the game and hope to play some advanced players soon. I've been doing very well against "intermediate" players winning most of my games as either side.

I would update to 1.087 now.

Alternatively you can wait till there is another official patch - which will probably be called 1.200 (or 1.100). v1.070 is fully replaced by 1.087 - both beta patches.

I do not know the answer to either of your questions - I have never seen that happen or heard about it before.

UN should have been WA, yes. Getting INF above 8 in tech is much harder from v1.087.

Just use rename file and change the ending from .bin to .psv That should work. But I have no idea why this is happening to you. Perhaps problem 1 and 2 are related. You should delete and reload the game then patch it, but save your save files to put back into the right folder. If that does not fix it then something installed on your computer could be causing this. Maybe a virus or maulware?

Thanks, can someone post the link or address so I can get the patch then? Also, what will happen to games I am currently playing? I never have all my games end at the same time so will this cause a problem? If all my opponents update on the same day will be able to continue the game(s) we are playing?

Once one player updates their game and saves their turn off using the new update, all other players after that point must be using updated versions as well. So whoever updates first must notify the others that they must update to load in the latest PBEM save they are sending out to the next player.

What many of us find most convenient is to copy the World at War folder into another folder on your hard drive. Rename the copied folder to something like GGWaW1.040 so you can keep it straight from your up to date copy. Than update your original GGWaW to 1.087. Now you are in a position where you can use either version of the game depending on which exe you run (the original folder which would now be 1.087 or the one you copied to the new GGWaW1.040 folder). Don't be fooled by the fact that they both say 1.087 on the main menu once you have upgraded one of them (it always lists the most uptodate version you have anywhere on your system).

If for some reason this is not possible, than, yes, if you and all your opponents agree to update on the same day before continuing with any PBEM games, you'll all be ok.

To download 1.087 you must download it through the Matrix Members' Club (click the MEMBERS link in the top nav bar to log in or sign up).

You will need to be registered there with your GGWaW serial number in order to access the Private or Registered Downloads, which include the beta patch. This will only be available for registered legal owners of GGWaW. Click on the "MEMBERS" link in our top navigation bar to register if you haven't done so already.

For those going to the members area to download the patch, be sure to register your World at War in the members area using the Register Your Game option and then use the Registered Downloads option to download the file.


So far only a few minor problems have been found with 1.087 so we feel it is much improved from 1.040. We are awaiting some localization files before we make the patch official. We'll also fix up any issues that are found between now and then, so the more beta testing we get on this version the cleaner it will be when it becomes the official patch. We encourage you to migrate to 1.087, espeically for any new games you start.

As Joel said copying the game folder is the quick and easy way to make multiple installs. But if your game folder has errors in it, then using this technique will only carry the error over to the other game folder. In his case, since he seems to be having rather odd things happenning its best in his case to start from a clean slate. That's why I suggested to delete, then reinstall.
