Upgrades how the heck does it realy work?

Post by Stardog »

How does the UpGrade system work? I get up grades once or (Very rare > twice after I have been playing for 2 years (24 months)or longer.? How may barrcks do you need?
I understand about the predetermined (Picked For You)UpGrades aspect of the game but should you not from the start have some choice as to Direction you want your Armed Forces to go?Maybe be able to pick 1 or 2 Upgrades from the start of the game?
Also where's the Signal Corps (A.K.A Signal Flags -before- Teleagraph/Radio)Signal/Flag Communications were used heavly in this era.It could give the Commander more control over the Battle Field but it may not be applicable to the game but it's a thought....
Any way thanks again for CoG!
P.S. This is not a bitch just some ?'s and thoughts....

I'm guessing here unless otherwise stated.

The game developer's perception/prejudice of a country's armed forces is probably reflected in the game start training status. Picking your own would be a nice option for the people that financially support the project, although arguably not historical.

Assuming battlefield signals were already in common use, maybe they are already factored in for each army employing them, just like some people get big honkin' ships of the line and some other people get galleys.

I have read elsewhere in the forum (I think from jimwinsor) that there is a 33% chance that any training you don't already have in your "pick one" menu will be added each time this option comes up (modified, I guess, factors such as your barracks, etc.). What would probably be historically correct is to reward powers building lots of barracks by letting them choose more than one (I think one time I did get to pick two, but I don't remember clearly anymore at my age ).

Somewhere I thought I saw in the rules that training options were modified by both barracks level and culture, although I don't recall seeing what the raw numbers were.

In playing France in both 1792 (for 3 years so far) and 1805 (likewise 3 years) I built a few barracks and no culture and always got to select a training every three months.

You say you're not getting many chances to choose? What country are you playing, Lesser Wallachia?
Sorry, couldn't resist. Not trying to start a flame war.

Here's a helpful thread:
tm.asp?m=906724

Since the the table in that thread suggests that the number of updates you're allowed is dependent on the squares of your culture and barracks levels, it explains why you don't see many upgrades early on.
