DARK SIDE OF THE FORCE: Spruance(J) vs Vietnam Vet(A)

This will be my 1st attempt as Japan in a campaign game as Ive always tried to stay away from the production side of the game. We will be playing Scenario 15 on the standard map with very few house rules. The settings are:

This will be a fairly historic game on my part....no invasion of USSR or India in early 1942. First turn Japanese invasions will be limited to only the historic locations(but the force compositions will be different).

Since I normally play the Allies, my approach in this game wil be to play Japan in a way to defeat typical Allied strategies. JOB ONE will be to take Manila/Clark and Singapore ASAP. The Allies will be given NO time to build up their fortifications or augment their supply situation.

Ive seen too many Japanese players dilute their opening thrusts by attacking Luzon, Malaya and Burma simultaneously. Burma will be a sideshow for me until Singapore is captured.

The Japanese opening offensive will stress speed and mass and will be heavily dependent upon amphibious transport. Instead of conducting 30 simultaneous invasions on Dec. 7th there will be just a few concentrated assaults.

The 1st Phase of the Japanese offensive will be to secure their defensive perimeter...
Wake, Guam, Gilberts, Solomons, New Guinea and adjacent islands, SRA, PI, Malaya, Burma and the entire China railine and is expected to be completed by April 1942.

The 2nd Phase will be a thrust into the South Pacific to sever the lines of communication between the US and Australia. It is during this Phase that the IJN hopes to engage and annihilate the USN CVs.

3rd Phase objectives have yet to be determined.

As far as production is concerned, I just followed Oznoyng's strategy at Spooky's web site and it actually didnt seem too bad....basically just converted a lot of engine production over to Nakajima and doubled A6M2 production. I dont understand all the HI stuff but I will post all my economic numbers at the end of each month.

EMPEROR'S REPORT: 12-7-41

Hostilities commenced with the bombing of Pearl Harbor just after 7AM. Several ships were heavily damaged but not ONE Allied ship was sunk on the 1st day of the war.

Later that day, concentrated airstrikes were made on enemy airfields at Clark, Manila and Singapore. A total of 262 Allied AC(224 on the ground) were destroyed vs Japanese losses of 43 AC. IJN plane losses were high at Pearl Harbor.....6 A6M2(55th Fighter Group put on an amazing performance), 12 Vals and 13 Kates.

KB sails to the east of Molokai to be in position to intercept USN fleet elements that may attempt to withdraw towards the US west coast.

Japanese amphibious assaults go ashore in all the usual places.....Guam, Wake, Batan, Vigan, Aparri, Legaspi and Khota Bharu.

Japanese shock attacks liberate Nanchang, Batan and Wake.

EMPEROR'S REPORT: 12-8-41


CHINA:

Hong Kong is captured in a massive shock attack. This frees up a division for immediate transfer to the Philippines.

IJA forces begin massing for an attack on Changsha.


DEI:

Japanese invasions go ashore at Kuching and Amboina.


SOUTH PACIFIC:

IJN naval troops assault Rabaul and the Admiralty Islands.


CENTRAL PACIFIC:

Poor weather grounds the naval air of KB. The USN Pacific Fleet appears to have stayed in port so another port attack will be ordered for tomorrow.


PI:

Japanese bombers flying out of Formosa continue to destroy the USAAF on the ground at both Clark and Manila. Both airfields will be bombed every day until captured to both destroy AC and prevent the defenders from entrenching.

14th Army conducted the assaults on the north coast of Luzon with 65th Brigade capturing Vigan and the 48th Division capturing Aparri. Construction engineers and aviation personel are immediately offloaded at Aparri as this will be used as the major Japanese airfield in northern Luzon.

The 14th Army attack on northern Luzon is primarily a diversion. The main assault was made by 16th Army to capture Legaspi. 2nd, 4th, 6th, 16th, 21st and 56th Divisions will debark here in the main thrust to take Manila from the south. Legaspi will be used as the major airfield in southern Luzon.

The invasion of Mindanao commenced today with an assault on Davao. Hordes of supplies and fuel are on the move now towards Davao which due to its excellent centralized location in the southernPI/northen SRA region will be used as the primary refuel/resupply port until Singapore is captured.

MALAYA:

5th and 18th Divisions continue to unload at Khota Bharu and are ordered to conduct an all out shock attack tomorrow. Khota Bharu will be used as the primary airfield in Malaya to neutralize Singapore and provide air cover for future amphibious landings on the Malay peninsula.

Japanese bombers flying out of Indochina find BB PoW and BC Repulse still in port. The A6M2s blow through the Buffaloes on CAP and the Nells work over the capital ships:

This time 3 BBs are sunk...BB Maryland, BB Oklahoma and BB Pennsylvania. The IJN loses another 23 of its valuable naval planes in the attack. The US loses 4 B-17s and 4 P-40Bs on the ground today.

KB heads west toward Wake Island in case the US CVs are in the area.


SOUTH PACIFIC:

IJN naval troops liberate Admiralty Island today and continue to offload troops at Rabaul.


MALAYA:

Khota Bharu is captured in a shock attack....the SEAC defenders are last seen retreating towards Kuantan where they will be safely out of action while Singapore is taken. Construction engineers and aviation personel are offloaded to get Khota Bharu up and running as a major Japanese airbase, while the 18th and 5th Divisions are simultaneously re-embarked for their next amphibious operation.

DEI:

Japanese capture Amboina and Kuching. Both bases will flying A6M2s and Nells within the next 2 days.


PI:

On Luzon, Japan overruns Lamon Bay. Massive numbers of troops and equipment continue to unload at Legaspi, and the first combat formations are sent down the road to Naga. On the north shore of Luzon, the 48th Division, 65th Brigade and the 24th Tank Regiment begin moving south.

PI:

The forward elements of the massive Legaspi invasion force reach Naga and push 2 Philippine divisions out of their defensive fortifications....the road to Manila is open.

Jolo, Lingayen and Laoag are also captured.


DEI:

Kendari is captured. The Allied escape routes for shipping in the PI/northern SRA are virtually closed.


CHINA:

Changsha surprisingly falls in a 2:1 assault and the center of defenses in China threatens to break open.


MALAYA:

3 separate Task Groups put to sea for a linkup off Singapore and an eventual amphibious landing at Johore Bharu:

PI:

65,000 Allied troops surrender at Bataan and another 7000 are pocketed 60 miles east of Lingayen. The final bastion of Allied resistance in Luzon is soon to be liquidated at San Marcelino.

Davao has been built up into the main resupply/staging base in the PI/ northern SRA.

Japanese land based bombers at Kuching suppress Batavia airfield while CV Akagi and CV Kaga suppress Banjarmasin airfield. A shock attack is ordered at Samarinda today.
