A New Campaign is on the Way

Post by Wild Bill »

After nearly two months of hard work from a very excellent Wild Team, a new campaign will be avilable soon, probably by the end of the month. its about time we had a new campaign in this fine game and you know how I love the Pacific Theater!

It is the true story of Lt. Col. Brute Krulak and his 2 Marine Parachute Regiment. In November 1943 they were sent on a diversionary attack on Choiseul Island to divert Japanese defenses from Bougainville.

The raid was a success but it involved some tough fighting and some dangerous moments.

This has been captured in the campaign.

When you begin, you'll have two choices, to fight with Col. Krulak to the south, or accompany Major Bigger to the north.

So actually its two campaigns in one. You can play it through twice without ever repeating a battle.

It is called "A Deadly Diversion."

My thanks to the Wild Team for their work. The participants are as follows:

A DEADLY DIVERSION
October 28-November 3rd, 1943
Choiseul Island, Solomons

Campaign-Coordinator: Wild Bill Wilder
Krulak Campaign Design: Wild Bill Wilder
Bigger Campaign Design: Bruce "Recon" Hodgman
Map Design: Ken "Orzel Bialy" Baran

Testing Team: Bruce "Recon" Hodgman, Joe "Joss" Osborne, Roland Rahn, Ken "Orzel" Baran, Jack Withrow, Sherman "Trip" Triplett, Massimo "Mad Italian" Rocca, Mark "Warlord" Ezra

My special thanks to these fine men for the generous use of their talents and tenacity

Well thank you sir!

The group is listed in the above post, Warrior. There are really two campaigns in one. I did one of them and Bruce Hodgman did the other one.

These are some rather unique battles, no armor, but a lot of interesting infantry fights. Loosely based on the historical events of that week, it will give you what I feel is a better insight into what it was like fighting the Japanese in World War II.

Gunny Erwin is going to drool all over this module![:D]
While interviewing an anonymous US SF soldier, a Reuters News agent asked the soldier what he felt when sniping members of Al Quaeda in Afghanistan.
The soldier shrugged and replied, "Recoil."

Wild Bill:

I suppose as a campaign, this cannot be played as a two player, or from the other side. I know most prefer to play USMC (and avoid Japan like the plague), but I like the unique challenge of playing the IJA (and am willing to be thoroughly trounced at the pleasure of our playerbase).

Either way, I will be playing this hot off the presses. [:D]

A quick OT question KG: Does the Marine Corps still train and field any parachute formation? Do marines get any jump training? Or did they scrap that concept of troop delivery completely when helicopters became all the rage?

The Marines have only trained small units in Airborne Ops until recently. Fleet Liaison Units (formerly ANGLICO), Force Recon Companies, and the Deep Platoon of Recon Battalions have Airborne Marines. With the formation of the new Marine Special Operations Unit, it should have most of its members airborne qualified also. If you include the new Spec Ops unit, I would guess around 2-2500 Marines are going to be airborne qualified. Unless it has been changed MOS 9962 was a Parachute Marine. The Wings I use as my avatar are Marine/Navy Jump Wings which I received in 1978.

Yes, yes, YES. I've played enough Wild Bill scenarios to know he is a genius. Although Pacific Theater isn't really my thing, you know I'll still eat this stuff up.

Well, I suppose we could offer them as separate scenarios in addition to the campaign but that would take some more work. I did do that with the Munda Campaign, either the campaign or the separate scenarios as a series. The same is true with the Hurtgen Forest Campaign and Scenario series.

There are quite a few Japanese vs whoever in the game now. Have you tried any ot them Afrika Korps? It does give you a different prespective on the fighting, that is for sure.

Gentlemen, both the team and I thank you for your encouragement. Right now things are looking very good. A very talented team has worked long and hard on this one. They are playing it through over and over and still seem to be enjoying themselves. That is also a good sign.

We hope to have it out for you before the end of February. I'll keep you posted...WB

Wild Bill! Yes I have played them... [:D]

And don't make more work than you need to, I will gladly play them from the USMC side. Perhaps sometime I speak with you about converting some campaigns to the other POV...when/if I ever get that kind of skill. [;)]

Bill, any plans to taclke some scenarios, or (dare I hope it?) a campaign about the aborted invasion of Britain? I´d love to see an entire alternate history campaign, and there must be tons of historical data about what strategies the Germans had drawn up as possible methods of attack.....

[:@] Arrrgh!! While utterly enraptured in the Chosin Few campaign, my friend I'm playing along with says he needs a 2 week break for his exams so I figured I would take a break as well and get some things done before starting the 3rd battle when he is ready. Then Wild Bill launches his trademark sneak attack with a new, badly needed Pacific War campaign to tie me down meanwhile. Real life goals and plans evaporate like eastern front frost on the barrel of a freshly fired MG 42. Yup, I downloaded it. [:o] And yup, going to start playing it tomorrow. [:(]

I may write up a description of my battles for this one cause I kinduv regret not describing the mayhem of my previous battles in the Chosin campaign. Hopefully we can buy US cavalry in this campaign cause I was astonished that we could only buy them in the first couple of battles in the Long, long victory campaign. Do you know? Maybe the best thing to do is buy them for my core to ensure they are there everytime.

I'm not sure if you can or not, Tensai. Of course it is a Marine campaign so ideally you would buy yourself a platoon+ of Marines. My choice was an E Platoon since it comes with a machine gun.

Some chose Raiders, others Marine paratroopers. This is the platoon you'll lead through some fierce battles.

Only one of the scenarios goes over 15 turns. Most of the battles are 10-12 turns in length. You should be able to fight at least one battle a night.

A step by step commentary on the fighting would be very nice. I would enjoy reading it.

You should do it.
