Mystery Ship #16

Post by Feinder »

And like when you first meet that "hot chick" from the internet service,

"She's a lot bigger than I thought she'd be..."

[;)]

Oh, and she's -NOT- Japanese. My previous post indicated that the next would be Japanese. But I like this one, and it's my game, so phhhhttt.

I think the foto is one of the KPM liners at the Amsterdam Northsea Canal.
Have to search for the name.
stack rings/color are also a indication

*** Crap. Just noticed the copywrite symbol next to the pic. Am pulling down the image file on the original post. Esp since you have a pic anyway Fokkov. That's odd. They usually put the copywrite notice -ON- the pic. Oh well, I will respect that which is to be respected! ***

Fokkov, I'm going to ban you from aswering the RDN ones!

[:D]

This was supposed to take them hours! They were naming US ships for Pete's sake! This was a liner, and a Dutch one to boot, it was supposed to be HARD!

[:-]

Congrats. She is indeed the Colombia.

A little ship's history from DutchSubmarines.Com:

Boat Colombia
Chronology - Former passenger ship of the KNSM that was changed into a submarine depot ship.
- 8 Nov 1940: Requisitioned by the Navy.
- 1 May 1941 - 18 Aug 1941: Converted into depot ship at Dundee.
- 5 Jan 1942: Departure Dundee. Sails in convoy WS 15 to the far east.
- 4 Mar 1942: Arrival Colombo.
- 8 Mar 1942 - 13 May 1942: Based at Colombo. Relieved in Colombo in 1942 by the ship Plancius.
- June 1942 - Aug 1942: Based at Bombay.
- Via Mombasa to East London.
- Aug 1942 - 27 Feb 1943: Based at East London (arrival on 24 Aug at 08:35 hrs GMT) to serve as depot ship for maintenance and support of Dutch submarines on passage to and from the Far East.
- Torpedoed, while on its way (for dry-docking) to Simon's Town SA , by the German U-boat U-516 on 27 Feb 1943 at 11:42 hrs. 'Only' 8 of the 320 people on board are lost. Click here for a list of the lost crew members.
Fate The Colombia (Ktz. J.L.K. Hoeke) is escorted by HMS Genista and several aircraft of the RAF.
At 11h4 the German U-516 fires a spread of three torpedoes from a distance of 1500 meters and hits the Colombia just before the bridge in hold no. 2. The ship is abandoned immediately with the loss of eight men and sinks after 10 minutes at 33°36'S-27°29'E, about 45 miles South-East of East London.
About 60 survivors in one whaleboat are picked up by an air-sea-rescue launch of the RAF. The remaining survivors are picked up by the Genista, after she has accomplished a counterattack.
In the afternoon +/- 317 survivors arrive in East London.
Visit Uboat.net for more info on U-516.
