Question about German Mountain troops

Post by JeF »

HI,

Questions about mountain troops in CotA, for those in the known.
I'm not an history buff. But, for once, I began some reading about Operation Marita and Merkur, to wet my appetite on CotA.

I noticed that German Mountain divisions often use their specific training to move accross what seems impassable mountains to flank the Greeks or the British. Will this be reflected in game ? Will mountain troops be more mobile in montaneous terrains ?

Same thing for airlandings, would Airborne Troops suffer less casualties and loose less cohesion (for ex.) after landing, while other troops would suffer a bit more. I read some poorly trained mountain troops landed in Crete, with rather poor success.

Not that I find these details essentials, but it would add a bit more chrome.

Thanks,

JeF.
PS: I re-read my message but what happens to me ? I know talk like a grog, requesting more chrome in an otherwise fine game ! [X(] Arjuna, I blame your games ! I wouldn't have read those things without them.

Then you might be intested in "La guerre dans les Balkans - Opération Marita" by François de Lannoy - excellent overview of the operations (and in French)

Not directly I think, but given their high moral, cohesion, training and other factors they do tend to "survive" the mountain roads better, so you'll use them in their historical role : in difficult terrain.

Actually - the Fallschirmjaeger had substandard jumping equipment and operational methods (jumping without their weapons which came in separate containers, from a very low altitude resulting in more casualties etc.). Couple this with too few Junkers planes to carry them all in one wave and the whole Crete affair becomes a first class FUBAR for them. They were too spread-out as well and their gung-ho moral tended to result in serious casualties as well. Short : Crete was a close-run thing, much more than people then or now realized and this is reflected in the game.

Tempting. Must resist. Don't have time. Trying to spare some money to get a new computer and buy some games.

Good to know. Thanks.

You're right. The little I read about the operation noted that as well. I just forgot about it before posting.

Take care,

JeF.
