London reported today that stage 1 for the re-conquest of Burma has been completed with the conquest of the critical base at Akyab. The Japanese did not even contest the move by 14th army troops which entered the town without loss.

Lae bombed back to stone age again, Admiral Hara (a shipless commander until Shokaku is repaired) asked Yamamoto to send the Zeros from Shokaku and Zuikaku to defend Lae but his request was denied, levels of avgas in Lae are at very low levels and another Tokyo express run would be very dangerous. Meanwhile, new targets, eerrrr....Hurricanes, were detected over Akyab. LB-30´s were moved to China and attacked Nanning with minimal damage being inflicted to Japanese troops.

-Tensions between the Navy and the Army achieved new heights when Tojo managed to persuade Yamamoto to cede 2 Zero Daitais for another air offensive against Burma and Kunming. The ill planned offensive resulted in disaster as recently upgraded Ki-43´s still kept the maximum ranges of Ki-27´s. As a result, Oscars didn´t escort the planned raids, resulting in Zeroes being forced to fight the enemy at significant numerical disadvantage. No less than 22 Zeroes lost in two days, the total number of aircraft lost was 38, against 26 allied planes destroyed. Two Zero Daitais are now out of action. The Navy HQ retreated all Zeros to Singapore and vowed to stop any cooperation with the Army in Burma and China.

RE: Lae starving
-Japanese officials denied the rumors that the attempt to reinforce Lae resulted in the loss of all 4 transports and one Patrol craft, claiming that the reinforcement operation was succesfull and losses acceptable. In Nanning, the arrival of heavy AA guns boosted the local defenses, resulted in two Il-4 shot down and more than 10 LB-30´s heavily damaged.

RE: Lae starving
Allied bomber crews returning from Nanning confirmed that a substantial increase in flak was observed. While losses were light overall, many of the returning planes displayed signifigant damage and mechanics were working overtime patching them up. Morale among the bomber crews took a sharp drop. A decision will have to be made on whether to up the altitude and accept less hits or maintain the tenancity of the air assault and accept the battering that the bomber groups are taking.
Allied forces situated around the Akyab area continue to dig in should any Imperial ground forces attempt to extract them from their recently won gains.

PM hit
IJN heavy surface units were able to bombard PM inflicting heavy losses to the enemy. Intel estimated that 30-40 enemy planes were destroyed in the ground, rendering PM unfit to offensive operations in the next 4 days. Follow up attacks with LBA from Rabaul found little resistance, but also inflicted small damage. Overall losses in South Pacific were about 45 aircraft for the allies and 10 for IJN. However, the IJN High command was deeply disappointed with the poor performance of Zeros at extreme range. In another worrying development, enemy land troop numbers in Nanning seem to have increased by 100% in only two days. Some offcials in the Army are suggesting a retreat to Hanoi.

RE: Nanning assault starts....
Chang Ki-nik announced today the opening of a major Chinese offensive to liberate the city of Nanning, signifigant progress having been made over the last two days. While casualties were heavy Japanese forces are slowly being driven from one denfensive line to the next, their overall position compressing into the inner suburbs of the city itself. Allied bomber craft continue support operations in this endevor.
In other news....Pearl Harbor based DD's commence operation "Clean sweep". Like a broom, enemy I-boots are being swept up and put in the trash bin.
Douglas MacArthur was interviewed today and was reported to say that he expects to be in Rabaul by the end of the year.....provided the US navy doesn't screw up again and lose all of it's major ships.

RE: Nanning assault fails
-Chinese troops suffered another crushing defeat, while Japanese soldiers were able to advance to a forward defensive line and rebuild some fortifications. The shock suffered by the enemy was such that offensive operations seem to have been postponed. On the other side, another submarine was lost close to Pearl Harbour, this time evidence points to an attack by enemy destroyers. These bad news were, to some extent, mitigated by confirmation of sinking of US submarine Tuna, which was reportedly hit by depth charges a few days ago.
