To make a long story short...we have the bridge. I manage to send a few teams around to some of the other VLs on the map to improve my position a little. The Germans are almost out of men and request a truce. I decide to give them the opportunity to collect their wounded and I collect mine. Another victory but my BG is going to be very badly depleted next turn.

True, but so will the Germans - and they don't have any points to replenish the "oval" battle groups as they're just local troops guarding the bridges. So next time you could be facing just a couple of under strength squads - which in many ways makes things hard as you need to try and find them!

One thing I have noticed in this game is that lots of battle groups are quite under strength. You really need to stack them in order to get close to the 15 squads that we've become used to in the past. So, playing as the German, I really have found that it's tough as I have many of my groups consisting of about 6 to 8 squads of really crappy quality troops - many with either no or basic training only, and low morale. And when I look at them on the map, I see "Weak Squad", "Fragile Squad", or even "Useless Squad". Which I guess accurately reflects the fact that the Germans scraped together whatever they could and threw it at the flanks of the Allied advance. And that's certainly evidenced by the number of squads that just break and run with the slightest provocation.

So no more driving around on the British Airborne landing fields in a Panzer IVH as I fondly recollect doing back in CC2, but I guess it's more realistic.

Always enjoying your AARs. Have to see if there is one I can do of my own which would in any way be interesting.

I'm not really worried about the static German BGs on turn 2. I'm just worried about the mobile BGs that will counterattack. With my BGs so depleted by the bridge assaults I'm afraid it may take many turns of light casualties at best to restock my BGs. I don't know, though. I haven't gotten to turn # 2 yet so I haven't seen what the replacement situation is going to look like.

Grafwegen: A Change of Pace

Post by GaryChildress »

OK. Next battle, Grafwegen, is also in the 82nd Airborne area of operation. This battle is going to be a little different in that there's no bridge to rush. I know there is going to be a German flak 38 in the opposing BG. So I've stocked my BG with two 60mm Mortars.

My deployment area seems to be right smack in the middle of an open field. There are several 2 story buildings in the area which, if occupied by the Germans could give me some headaches with their field of fire. There isn't a whole lot of cover to hide behind.

I've set up a Rifle team, Rifle (MG) team and Platoon HQ team to capture a two story house on the left side of the map. The Rifle team will advance to the house covered by the Rifle (MG) team and Platoon HQ.

[One thing I don't understand is why a Rifle Team costs more purchase points in a battle group than a Rifle (MG) Team does. It looks to me like the MG rifle team would be more valuable than just a rifle team. Maybe I'm missing something.]

The second major objective for the battle will be the other 2 story house next to the VL in the center of the map. Keep your eye on this area. It will be the main focus of most of the coming battle. [;)]

I thought I was placing my mortars and Platoon HQ out of harm's way by putting them behind the hedges in the middle of my deployment area.

I hit "BEGIN" and BANG!! The action starts immediately. The Flak 38 is on the right side of the screen pounding away at the HQ team behind my mortar teams. I scramble my 2 mortars immediately to start laying a barrage on the enemy flak.

My mortars are engaging the Flak but their shots are falling all over the place except for near the flak. My command team is almost completely wiped out.

A minute and a half into the battle: Finally the flak is out of action and no longer poses a threat. But I've been neglecting the rest of my troops sneaking up to their objectives all this time.

I turn my attention to the middle of the map just in time to catch the Germans trying to occupy the 2 story house there. I've been sneaking my men to it in hopes of getting a good field of fire toward the VL in the middle of the map.

It's a battle for the house at the crossroads now. I want that house and so do the Germans. It's my crack Paratroopers versus a rag tag group of ersatz troops. I wonder who will win? [8D]

Now it's close quarters combat time. Rule # 1: don't mess with US Paratroopers from the 82nd "All American" Division!

The house is mine! Time to check up on some of the other teams on the map next.

No sooner do I check my other teams but the Germans are back trying to take the house at the crossroads again. The Rifle Team inside has a good field of fire and the Germans are committing suicide.

You probably learned this already based on sending your sniper to the NW VL but snipers can not capture VL's....
