The battle of Rabaul as it develops.

It would seem that Tojo is gettin a bit overconfident. He launched the Rabaul attack without having enough airpower at Truk to support him. The flights out of Truk so far have consisted of 2-5 Nells, who have scored a lucky hit on two Aussie Cruisers up at Admirality Island.

I have no doubt that he is rushing the KB into action here, but it should be a few days out, which leaves me with plenty of time to disrupt his invasions.

I have been having computer problems, so a day or 2 may have gotten skipped.

Panzer's surface forces are running amok around Rabaul. But somebody has arrived to crash the party.[:D] I made an error in not waiting an extra day or 2. I pulled baby KB away from Tarawa 2 days ago and where does that snake hit.[:@]

But my revenge is coming soon if he does not tuck tail and run. He has also paid Kendari a visit, but it cost him. He tagged a few AK's there.

Battle of Rabaul

Post by 2ndACR »

Lots of warships of both sides got banged up today. The fighting was ferocious.
I lost 1 DD sunk, but have several CA's banged up pretty bad. At least 1 of them will not make port for safety.

Best news is the West Virginia was sunk. Panzer will not be sailing her into Tokyo Harbor.
Now to see if I can close the trap and bag a few more. I am a little leary of Panzers carriers, I have not spotted them yet.

Panzer has been bombarding my outer defenses in the Gilbert and Marshall islands. Sooner or later he will oops and I will have him.

Weather had been keeping my air force at Bangkok on the ground, but today the weather lifted and Panzer lost 3 AK's at Rangoon.

I have made a few mistakes to date.

1. Moved a little too fast at Rabaul, instead of waiting another 2 days for everything to get in place.
2. Mersing has been a drain so far. Will take a few months to rebuild the brigade there.
3. Not moving more engineers forward faster to build up or repair captured bases.
4. Should have sent another CV group to Rabaul, they would greatly help to close the trap.
5. Deployed too many subs farther out than I should have, should have set up a trip wire defense around the Gilberts and Marshall area.
6. Moved air groups to Tavoy way too soon. I have taken a pounding on my air units there.

Things I have done right.

1. Killed lots of his subs right out the gate.[:D]

Boy that was a short list.

Post by Hortlund »

Looks like Bismarck archipelago will be a costly affair for both of us.

On the flipside, I have 8 battleships that I can throw into the fray. The downside is that I have only three carriers, and they are all tasked with wartime priority # 1 duties (protect US-OZ shipplinglanes). That means they will hopefully never have to be used. Right now Im not sure whether it is worth it to send them into the Solomons, I could bag lots of Jap shipping and put a huge dent in his plans, but on the other hand, I will be risking my only source of airpower in the entire south pacific.

It is comforting to know that your ship losses hurt you alot more than mine. My Battleships should already be gone, so it is not critical if I lose them here.
The era of procrastination, of half-measures, of soothing and baffling expedients, of delays, is coming to a close.
In its place we are entering a period of consequences..

ANY ship loss hurts the IJN !!!!!! Getting a couple of CA's heavily banged up sucks. I expected your BB's to be around Buna heading south at high speed. Instead the popped up at Lae.

Well Panzer is now trying to give me a heart attack for real. He sailed a surface combat TF right into my CV TF near Rabaul.[X(][:-] Luckily my brave DD's managed to inflict heavy damage on the CA he sent and heavily damage one of the DD's. He continues fleeing the fighting near Rabaul while my CV TF's pick off the fleeing remnants.

Ground combat was almost non existant today, with only widespread prep bombardments taking place at Manila, Mersing, Aloe Star, Yenan.

Air attacks were also very light for both sides, except for the fighting around Rabaul.

A good way to stop the bombardments of Tavoy would be to station a few I-Boats along the approach route. Given the vulnerability of DDs vs coastal guns on bombardment missions, many players leave them out of the TF.

Alright, things are moving again. Nothing decisive at Rabaul yet, it seems like the japanese fleets are turning back towards Truk...

Yeah, it pissed me off mightly too. Now I got to pray she gets to port and controls the flooding.[:@]

Been here before as the IJN when a CV takes a hit. Watched Akagi go down from 2 whole bomb hits in one game. Did 15 flt damage and she sank 3 turns later.

Some BS results vs PT's that's for sure. My as well keep the IJN in port rather than expose them to the super PT boats, immune to all attacks. I am amazed that the Allied fleets are causing you such problems, I'd love to have an opponent expose his BB's without aircover. They should all be sunk, where is the Japanese air power??? Sorry for the rant, seems pretty crazy from this view. The PT's do need to be fixed NOW, not later.

Like I said in the other thread, I dont see anything wrong with the PT results per se. If you venture too close to enemy shores with your carriers, you are bound to take some risks. PT boats have a range of what...2-3 hexes. There is a very easy way to keep your CVs safe from PTs. And in real life, killing PTs is not that easy at all.

And I have not exposed my BBs to his airpower, at least not to my knowledge. What happened at Rabaul was that he started his invasion without any carriers present, his only aircover was Nells from Truk. Judging by the numbers of Nells in the attacks he only had 10-15 Nells. At that point I decided to send in a battleship squadron to disrupt his landings. I think it worked pretty well, although I didnt sink too many japanese ships, I did manage to turn away several of his transport taskforces. Then he brought in his Carriers, and they did manage to trap one battleship because they came from the "wrong" direction. I was expecting them to come from North or Northwest, instead they came directly from the east. He got one or two attacks on my fleet units in the area and sunk one BB and one or two CAs. I sunk some APs, some AKs, some DDs and a CA. I was very very close to get a carrier strike on one of his CVE or CVLs, but he lucked out and my units didnt launch any airstrikes that day. I had brought a carrier force into a perfect ambush position and I was waiting for him to pursue my fleeing surface ships, and I was very very close to bagging that damn CVE.

Anyway, right now he is stalled in the Rabaul area.

You leave my babys alone. They have racked up quite a kill sheet so far.

Brisd,

At the time of my Rabaul attacks, Panzer has been bombarding around Tarawa with hit and run attacks. I had 1 CV TF over there waiting to pounce on him, The other was a day or 2 away from Rabaul. I forgot to put my transports on a patrol setting on a empty hex to await the CV's. Once I realized it, they were entering the battle area a full day and a half ahead of my CV support. My bad.

Actually, my BB Tf was already at sea at the same time as my transports, but they WERE on the patrol orders. In the hex I had picked as my rendevous point.
