my carrier group is attacked again on the way North towards Java and the damned I-183 manages to achieve three hits on the undamaged CA Chicago that sinks immediately... quite an achievement on an undamaged heavy cruiser during daylight... a tragedy but only the second heavy cruiser that is lost in the war... the sub is reported sunk in return but that´s only a small consolation prize... the carriers again weren´t spotted but I guess Rainer is aware of my fleet coming towards him as several Nells on nav search were shot down over my carriers...

Large oil slick appears over area of attack!
Escort abandons search for sub

hurrey, hurrey! And the new super E sink the next sub, hit by four Type 2 depth charges... sorry guys, but this is ridicoulos... I was wondering if it is still worth it to keep my subs in the frontlines hunting enemy ressource/oil/fuel convoys when these new E types weren´t around so it becomes more and more clear now that I should withdraw all my subs as more and more of these ASW 14 super vessels show up... my subs all got patrol zones set so they are not static nor do they get spotted by air search all the time so detection level isn´t a real issue here... the 12 DC mount is the killer... [:(] it was yet again enouth that only ONE of these ships actually engaged the sub...

we land a force at the empty Wattambone... got some inf units and base forces to seize and hold the place, the enemy only got low value troops at this side of the coast and I doubt he will try to attack... LCT convoys will start to move in engineering units from Kendari to build up the place, potential level 9 airfield...

the super ego must have never really played this game, otherwise he wouldn´t stubbornly insist on how much realism is built in... built in stupidity and borked by design... it´s not the borked way it works that is pissing me off, it´s the stupidity of ppl that keep on telling how great it is when no AAR shows anything different from what is shown here... but hey, if your ego is big enough, you probably believe your own propaganda... oh wait, just searching the net about 3 fighters of each squadron lost on the way to target... this is how it must have been in real life... it´s so obvious and so consitent that this must have come up since day one of testing so everyone is/was aware of it so telling everything would be near perfect is just silly... not the faulty routine is the problem, denying the fault it is...

ordered a full strike on Samarinda today, with lots of fighters on sweep and escort, followed by the full strenght B-24 force at Manada... Samarinda recon showed some 40 fighters there (so I expected one daitai) with Balikpapan one hex West having twice the number of fighters and therefore I´ve ordered the first strike to attack Samarinda to knock out the airfield there and to kill some leaking fighters from Balikpapan... well, it seems there were either a hell a lot more fighters at Samarinda today or nearly all were coming over from Balikpapan... the Corsairs did well at start, taking down more than a dozen enemies but when the Corsairs ran out of the dive, they were all either shot down or sent home damaged, causing the loss of one third of this squadron with 6 pilots KIA/MIA (including two aces)...

must be Jackpot time this turn, don´t know if I have ever seen a 7 squadron sweep showing up over the target, after the initial single squadron sweep took out the majority of the enemy Cap, this mega sweep had no problem taking out the rest... don´t know what all has gone wrong in this turn, it must have been a mega screw up, otherwise the routine wouldn´t have sent 7 squadrons in at the same time I guess... I´m not asking for all squadrons in one sweep, but there should be at least some sense behind how the strikes look like, it wasn´t a 99% screw up in real life...

then the bombers show up, without a single escort... ok, means the sweeps went in first and the squadrons set to escort failed and also went in first... and no, having the fighters at the same altitude has never made any difference for me... only spreading out the squadrons over a dozen airfields gives me better "coordination", something that is totally odd... the airfield is trashed and with very few enemy troops (therefore very few engineers) at the base it will take forever to repair the damage... next target is going to be Balikpapan (the enemy has abandoned it after today´s massacre) and as soon as the airfields are knocked out, there is not going to be a single tanker convoy picking up fuel or oil from Balikpapan, Samarinda or Tarakan again... the loss of Manado actually meant the loss of all the oil/fuel in Southern Borneo for the Japanese...

not a single escort was actually escorting the bombers, guess three or four of the eight Corsair squadrons were set to escort, all showed up sweeping before the bombers... while this may work well in terms of losses in the end, it nevertheless again was a total screw up... all four squadrons failing to escort the bombers?

Sangi is the small island North East of Manado that is being built up by our sea bee units... to cover the LCT convoys going there we have place a single Thunderbolt squadron there, set to 30 Cap... two base forces and a USMC def. btn are providing air support and radar... the enemy has massed fighter units at Davao today and probably due to being pissed off by the too big (for my taste) success of my sweeps against Samarinda yesterday, he has ordered his first line units to sweep Sangi to take out the 30-40 fighters he had intel and ends up facing the Thud squadron at Sangi plus Thuds from Manado plus Corsairs from 7 squadrons leaking from Manado, leaving us with 63 vs. 49 fighters at the start of the engagement... raid was detected by radar... what then followed must have been as awful to watch for my opponent as it was for me... his fighters were set to 6000ft (an altitude the enemy had great success BEFORE radar was working again) and all our squadrons were diving, shooting, diving, shooting, diving, shooting, diving, shooting, diving, shooting, diving, shooting right from the start until the end of the battle... the result was... omg... around 40 Tojos shot down for 1 Thunderbolt destroyed... 49 fighters on sweep meeting 63 fighters on Cap resulting in 40:1 aircraft lost?

I bet the moment the Tojos were shot down in droves Rainer hoped his Franks would fail to fly... well, they flew... 30 Franks incoming against still 52 fighters on Cap... the Franks at 6000ft, the Cap alerted by radar... guess how that turned out... dive, shoot, dive, shoot, dive, shoot, dive, shoot, dive, shoot, dive, shoot, dive, shoot, dive, shoot, dive, shoot until all Franks were shot down or damaged for not a single US fighter destroyed during the replay... at this moment we were at 60+:1 kill rate... the enemy has sent 79 fighters at this point, so actually outnumbered us 79:63 in total at this point...

and here´s the rest of the Frank sweep... 6 more are coming in to be massacred... makes it a 85:63 in total fighter numbers with total losses over Sangi being something like 70:3... would I post this result in the main forum, I sure would hear something like "your opponent has sent in totally green pilots and you were fielding elite pilots" or "the Mars was in wrong position to the Sun" or "your opponent forgot to sacrifice a lamb" or something else... well, Rainer told me he has sent in his normal frontline pilots that got 70 air skill with 50+ def skill, which is nothing different from what I´m using in my squadrons (while I´m in the slow process of replacing my pilots with 70 air 70 def skill pilots, but on average, both sides´ pilots were like clones)... in total, the enemy outnumbered us but this doesn´t matter as the strike routine takes care of any numerical advantages (and in this case, it didn´t even look that bad in terms of how the strikes looked like if you leave aside the 6 Franks that were lost on the way to the target)... we had radar and this enabled all available Thuds at Sangi to scramble, so setting a high Cap % isn´t necessary anymore (this is also true for the enemy as he routinely gets all his ac into the air now)...

so the pilots being equal, the enemy getting the "sweep bonus", "outnumbering" us, having not all that bad ac with the Tojo still doing very well usually and the Frank being quite a match for our fighters and the end result is a 70:3 loop... yeah, pure realism... real life kill rates went up to 10:1 at times, later in the war, having well trained Allied pilots flying excellent aircraft vs green Japanese pilots flying outdated aircraft like Oscars, Zekes or unreliable more modern types (the unreliability thing isn´t factored in in A2A of the game but only in the service rating so let´s leave this beside)... kill rates higher than 5:1 for the Allied were already great so what should I think about a 70:3 kill rate against Japanese pilots that are as good as the Allied flying aircraft that are far superior in A2A than the average Japanese fighter of real life? Radar has spotted the incoming raids, the Thuds were reinforced by 40 fighters from Manado and the enemy was at 6000ft which seems to be the main problem (wouldn´t matter if he would be at 30000ft though as radar would send our fighters just further up)... this alltogether then ends up in a never ending dive session that tears the enemy apart no matter how many fighters he would send in... with the 40+ Allied fighters still remaining at the end of this engagement we would have been able to take down another 150 enemy fighters! I don´t know if these never ending dive silliness is a poor attempt to simulate zoom and boom tactics but no matter if diving or not, these kill rates are nothing but a plain stupid thing... recently I bitched about 75 Lightnings flown by elite pilots (far better than my pilots in this case) losing 22:1 vs 30 Zekes/Georges on Cap that had the never ending dive, today I see the same stupidity just the other way around... I really don´t care which side is suffering, when I look at what is facing each other and I look at the results in the end then either I think it is ok (booh, or even realistic) or I think it is total stupidity. Both the recently instance with my P-38 as well as this turn´s happenings over Sangi is something I would call a totally borked routine. It´s not only the hardcoded screw up of every mission flown when it´s only about luck if you have something you would call a realistic strike (go and play BoB bombing the Reich to get some tips) this all then is made worse by a totally out of whack air to air routine that is absolutely ignoring physics or how things actually turned out 66 years ago.

Sorry people, I may be bitching a lot, I may be annoying, I may be going a step too far at times but I´m so annoyed about the stubborn ignorance that keeps on telling oh how realistic everything is. Or going the other way, blaming the players for exploiting something. Well, the strato sweep was the best exploit you could do as long as land based radar worked (never worked against nav based radar) and I´ve said it 50 times, everything is going to become worse when land based radar actually works again. Not because the strato sweep would be neutralized (now you most often see everything diving on your ac even though the enemy can´t even reach you - same as in WITP, explained with an argument like "your fighters have to come down to the enemy" - and then they get dived by the enemy when the come down or what?) but because radar is godmode now, just like it was in WITP. Do I think it is the same as in WITP? No, sorry, it is worse! Why? Because in WITP you had the bounce, bounce, bounce, bounce, bounce... this is now called dive... the difference is that in WITP when you had equally experienced pilots in first line aircraft you still could do "ok" while still suffering horrendous losses. Now you get loops like this one here. This is just off, sorry, it´s ridicoulos.

You know, the silliness trumps in the latest comment of the super ego posting:

Another interesting thing you'll see is players stating "when I fly my Sweeps at 45k' They rule the skies and take advantage of the sweep bonus...something isn't right about that. When they are told that they can see more historical results by flying more normal altitudes the totally ignore the obvious and continue to fly high altitude sweeps while complaining that the system is "broken"....

You can lead a horse to water....

this is when I laugh my a$$ off because it yet again proves that the main responsible for all this is still not playing the game or still fails to actually realize that most of his comments about the game are plain wrong (something he seems to have been told by the betas already). Well, as you can see in the above example (and in most examples in this AAR since radar has been working again), the aircraft are NOT set to their ceiling, neither the Japanese, nor the Allied, in the case at Sangi, not a single ac was flying even near it´s ceiling. But hey, there sure is another silly explanation for a result like this, probably one like "your opponent has done it wrong"... I´ve bitched about the strato sweep during the full year land based radar was broken, while me and my opponent both using the strato sweep, at the same time I´ve said it probably is going to become worse when land based radar is going to work again and that´s exactly how it is. Leaves me with the question if land based radar has never worked during development or if the results back then already were like they are now, or if the testing never made it out of Dec. 41 just like most of the brown nosers´ games seem to never make it further than 5/42. The funny thing is that you then hear more and more people complaining about the same things as they reach later stages of the game with more and more loops.

Again, it´s not the game that is pissing me off, it´s the fact that some ppl still insist on how realistic it is, not admiting that there is a problem. I stopped bitching about the strato sweeps the day when it was officially admitted it would be an "exploit". But 10 months long it was said everything is working 100% realistic. It can´t, it is a game, but then don´t come up with those fantasy explanations why this or that happened please. In WITP everyone accepted the weaknesses because there was no chance to get them solved. Since AE has been out, there are people that suddenly think everything is near perfect or even realistic because there are halve a dozen more messages during air combat. AE has not only done one step forward, it has done lots of steps forward, it is a fully enhanced WITP and overal the far better GAME. But this won´t ever keep me from saying that these kind of results are nothing but stupid. Many things (if not all) are different from real life and many things can be done that couldn´t be done in real life, it´s a game and this is good for the game. If the Japanese can do more than in real life, then this is what really makes the game interesting. But if you then show up telling someone that this is realistic, then this is causing me

It´s great to have an opponent like Rainer who´s not only a realiable and sneaky opponent but who´s also thinking the same about all this shortcomings of the game like I do, even though he isn´t by far not as vocal as I may be. So many things in this game can´t be matched by any other game, the support is awesome, so many things were improved or it simply was said it wasn´t possible, but nearly with everything related to the air war (one of the most important aspects) I again go with what a beta tester told me over a year ago:

The longer you play, the more you will find out how borked the airroutines really are. Whise words...

at the moment I´ve got some issues with these E ship classes available in 44/45 but that´s more going into the direction of what I´ve written above in what is good for the game (boosting the morale and ASW ability of the Japanese player), but this is by far not as annoying as the airroutines which are just off the line.

RE: AE = Alpine Edition <-> Rainer79 vs. ranting castor troy

Post by crsutton »

I will say that I find the tojo to be mostly outclassed by any second generation fighter. Surprisingly the hellcat seems to eat them up even though it is not faster. Thunderbolts, corsairs and lightnings have little problem in my game. Basically speed kills. It had its day but without armor and only middling speed the tojo is becoming obsolete. My oppoent has decided to build jacks and tonys as well and they seem to be much better fighters vs the heavy bombers. The tony really does shoot down a few liberators. But they are not very good vs my fighters because they are much slower, and the tony has a pretty poor climb rate as well which I believe is a big factor in beating the dive. I really don't worry about the Frank or George so much. I know that I will face them in the next few months but with a service rating of three, I expect to kill a lot of them on the ground.

Still the never ending dive rules and now that I have better planes it only works all that better. We have a ceiling cap of 29,000 feet so a lot of our combat takes place at 29k. The results are a little more balanced but the better Allied fighters still own the tojo.

ok, you probably are going to ask why... why? because the 74 P-38J that are flown by the best pilots available to the USAAF are shot to pieces by 23 enemy fighters as they lose no less than 22 P-38... the P-38 are set to escort, well, they show up with the bombers but the game treats them as sweep (would that be an advantage then??? [8|]), probably the usual coordination silliness (yes, I don´t care about altitude as it just doesn´t matter as coordination is something I call "screwed by design")... what happens then? Do I even have to say the enemy had the never ending dive? The strike was picked up by radar, resulting in 16 min pre warning for the Japanese fighters which are set to 6000ft... the George unit shows up with "Time for all group planes to reach interception is 23 minutes"... and then I can watch the replay with the Japanese fighters diving and diving and diving and diving and diving until the point I thought, heck, this GAME is so silly, why not using a board game where all aircraft are the same and the higher dice wins... Lightning after Lightning was sent home burning and nearly two dozen crashed... the Lightnings were able to take down one Zero and damage two Georges... yeah, air to air routines are a masterpiece of computer programming for sure... the flying circus of Lightnings outnumbered the enemy 3.5:1, they had the better aircraft, they had a tactical advantage (height anyone?) and the had overall better pilots as my flying circus didn´t meet two enemy expert units... but hey, why should that mean the game could come up with at least a somewhat reasonable result? It can´t because it´s borked... unfortunately... means the enemy achieves a 22:1 kill rate here...

I´m not going as far as saying that this is a usual result, but one thing is for sure, with all the weaknesses of WITP air combat, you still get LESS totally unreasonable results like these totally silly loops in AE very often... in WITP you could get reasonable, realistic kill rates and this depended on numbers, ac type and pilot exp... when looking at your force and the enemy´s before an engagement, you usually could expect an outcome good or bad for you... in AE, I have no clue what reasonable factors you should look at because there just isn´t anything reasonable as soon as you leave the early war stages of 2 Zero daitais engaging one P-40 squadron it seems...

as a side note, I´m sure there are people around thinking this was a perfectly realistic example of the airwar in the Pacific... to me, with the given factors, it was a totally silly result...

Ok, Castor...I promised myself I'd stay away, but to be honest, out of morbid curiosity I look in on my little friend from time to time. Normally I chuckle and walk away. This time I am going to try and help you with a teachable moment...first let me throw out some numbers and let you chew on them. Feel free to PM me with your analysis of their meaning in this instance.

Rainer has opted for the George instead of the Jack it seems (there were some Jacks around earlier). The Tojo still does well in my game and as you can see, while the Frank has overall excellent stats (better than the Hellcat) it was shot out of the sky at a rate of 30:0 today. If this isn´t ass odd as today´s overall kill rate then I don´t know what. Achieving a three times better kill rate than in real life when the Allied faced crappy aircraft with crappy pilots when we face better aircraft and as good pilots as the Allied have?

You are going to be surprised that you won´t take out lots of Franks (or any other fighter) on the ground because radar works now. As you can see in this AAR already (game still three weeks ahead), the enemy is usually having all his fighters scramble with a low Cap setting (just as we do), which means his fighters don´t suffer from a high service rating and you hardly ever kill them on the ground, except you have damaged them the days before but I can asure you that you are also going to suffer for this (see cap&gown´s AAR for example when the Allied drained his airforce over Truk). In my case, I wouldn´t accept such losses and already would stop after one day as I can not afford it, so there wouldn´t be much destroyed on the ground on the fifth or sixth day of fighting because by then I would have already stopped.

Ian, I have promised not to start any of "these threads" on the main forum anymore because it is neither good for sales nor is it going to help the mood on the forum so I usually keep my disliked comments within this AAR now where ppl who don´t want to read don´t have to enter anyway and a potential customer probably won´t end up when skimming the forum for a couple of minutes. I´m amazed tbh that you do enter from time to time as you sure are aware my comments here wouldn´t look any different (or even worse) than my comments earlier on the main forum. Nevertheless you are of course very welcome. If you read a couple of turns further, you will get to March 11, which shows 70 Japanese fighters with excellent pilots mostly on a sweep shot down for the loss of 3 Allied fighters. These are the things that I feel that aren´t right as it just stretches the "what could be possible" too far IMO. You won´t believe it, many thoughts and things that went into the new system were great IMO with the biggest step forward being the fact that Cap isn´t 100% bullet prove anymore. The biggest drawback IMO are these loops that happen every couple of turns when you end up with kill rates around 20:1, means 2, 3, or 4+ times higher than in real life but with having well trained pilots and better aircraft for the Japanese (same aircraft and slightly better pilots for the Allied). I bet you won´t see me complain about a 3:1, 1:1, 5:1, 2:3, etc when it comes down to kill raes. Well, complaining about the performance of my strike not being great perhaps but not saying something is broken.

But hey, let´s see what we can get out of this. I would like to post my answer here instead of sending you a pm, so other ppl could benefit from the posts here or at least get amused by us two getting into a quarrel again. [;)]

let´s take your numbers (I´m at work and I don´t have the game available, so I can only go by memory if we are talking about aircraft stats for example).

29, (guess) man rating of the Tojo or George below 10k?

13, (guess) man rating of the Lightning below 10k?

6000, altitude the Cap is set

16, time the incoming strike still needs to reach the target

27, no idea

3:1, no idea, 3:1 numerical superiority for the Lightnings? Probably not, as this was one of my arguments why I found it odd that you lose 22:1 with a 3:1 numerical superiority

3000, altitude the raid was detected

47, distance the raid was detected

without the ranting comments above, let me summarize what I see here (feel free to tell me if there is something wrong with what I notice). The bombers are coming in with 74 Lightnings, they are listed as sweeping so this should even be an advantage for them in the game, they meet a maximum of 23 enemy fighters on Cap (not all according to the combat report as it takes some of them longer to reach the incoming strike than it takes the incoming strike to reach the target), the Lightnings are having an altitude advantage over the Cap (I´ve always thought such an alt difference wouldn´t be much of an advantage, you as a pilot told the forum it is because it´s not a problem to spot the enemy from the higher position - note that this is a strato sweep, but most of sweeps have been flown at various other altitudes since working radar has made this tactic pretty much obsolete - referring to March 10 turn) and the Lightnings are flown by my best pilots, air skill 70+, def between 60 and 70+ with many aces. None of the Cap fighters made it to the bombers but halve of the Lightning formation was shot up, resulting in 22 of them being shot down in the end. The 74 Lightnings manage to down one enemy fighter. The altitude this fight is happening may be better for the Japanese fighters than if it would happen at 30000ft (at least for the Zekes) but the altitude isn´t far from where it happened in real life in the end and with 3.5 times more Lightnings coming down to pass on the enemy fighters I wouldn´t expect it to turn out into a turning combat anyway which again leads me to the comment that I don´t think a 22:1 in losses that favours the Japanese is plausible. Neither this, nor the March 10 turn´s kill rates seem to be plausible to me as they are just too "good". Even if you aren´t really interested on the Pacific War, many people have heard the term Great Mariana´s turkey shoot and even there, the total ac loss ratio didn´t exceed 5:1 IIRC, with the A2A being probably at least twice as high but this with all the bombers shot down, in this turn and in the March 10 turn, we are talking about fighter vs. fighter kill rates. Doesn´t mean there weren´t insane kill rates (at least reported by the pilots) against enemy fighters, I think it were Bellau Wood´s Hellcats that claimed more than 30 enemy fighters shot down over Guam. Adding in all the bombers shot down and aircraft destroyed by flak I don´t know how this then fits in in the tally though and the question remains just how often and at what conditions it happened. If I post the total aircraft lost A2A in the game then one can see that the totals seem to look just fine with a 2:1 at best at this date, but that´s more due to having loops on both sides happening, so I´m not saying it´s side related. But to me, they happen just too often and aren´t just claims by pilots but the actual losses.

Perhaps (no, for sure) I should keep my usual comments more civilized, without anything that is seen as a personal attack or that is the constant rant about my petpeeves as it sure would be a more constructive way. It would for sure help coming along better but I´m not sure it would change the situation and usually it does just boom at my place when my PBEM runs turns like this one above or (even worse) the March 10 turn. Lots of unexpected things happened in real life, the question just is how often and how "unexpected".

interesting turn as it shows the bug with escorts showing up over the target several times in one turn, in this case the Lightnings (they are also not shown as sweeping)... have set the Corsairs to sweep and the Lightnings to escort the bombers and set Cagayan as the target... what happens? The Lightnings are showing up in every engagement and are also actually FIGHTING... 90% of this engagement was fought by the Lightnings that shouldn´t show up at all... otherwise it was surprising that three Corsair squadrons flew together...

tried to engage some more enemy fighters here but none showed up anymore... as Mindanao is very high up on the target list we have to neutralize all airfields and have to scare away the enemy airforce... as Rainer sure is aware of Mindanao being a priority target he won´t let me take the place without a fight this time... 80 enemy units on the island, several big airfields and the Imperial fleet within two day striking range I guess... I also expect him to use KB as soon as we attempt to land on the island, which means we can expect the next carrier clash, hopefully we will then see our carriers actually strike at the enemy and not sitting idle because they ended up 8 hexes away from the enemy and despite being ordered to react they did just nothing...

a unit was spotted moving out of the clear hex of Udon Thani so we´ve ordered our bombers at Hanoi to fly a strike to find out it´s 1st tank div that is moving out... only six P-47 escorted the first wave, glad there´s no enemy fighter in the air...

amazingly enough, the Beaufighters that then showed up were coming from RANGOON, which is the opposite direction the bombers were coming from... this is when I think the "coordination routine" is strange... no?[&:]

all in all, only 5% of the fighters at Hanoi that were set to escort actually showed up, with one strike being "escorted" from Bangkok... doesn´t "escort" mean to fly WITH the bombers for the most part of the trip? Wonder how that works when they were coming from Rangoon... what the other fighters at Hanoi were doing is beyond me...

all in all only minor losses today... it would take a week more and daily attacks to have the tank div really feel our attacks but it probably gets railed out of range in no time...

bad news for the Corsairs as they come in one by one as most times, this time really suffering from the never ending dive for the enemy... glad there were mostly Zekes as these don´t carry enough punch to knock down the Corsairs immediately and many of them make it home damaged to be write offs in the end... this squadron was really hit hard though...

here comes the third squadron, same with the never ending dive but this squadron at least managed to get away with acceptable losses... in the end the enemy managed to suffer far fewer losses than expected, we couldn´t bring our numerical superiority to the fight and lose 16 Corsairs together with 50% of the pilots for not much in return... as long as we can´t bring a couple of squadrons to fly together we will have to focus more and more to attack leaking Cap, otherwise the enemy will keep outnumbering us over the target... trading 16 Corsairs for a dozen enemies today...

at times I just wonder what makes the game sending escorts and how many... in this case we see a hundred fighters escorting (or sweeping when they fail to escort) some bombers to an airfield without any reported enemy resistance over a damaged airfield...

the Lightnings and other Corsairs on escort should have flown with the heavies to Mindanao as that´s the place where we could expect heavy resistance... well, I could set them a target, but then we have the bug again that the fighters show up with every wave as this seems to only happen when you set a target...

we only spotted Yamato and Musashi earlier today but then Steelhead sights a fleet carrier and fires a salvo of six torps at the ship... absolutely amazing, three of them hit the carrier and the ship sinks immediately... [&o] after sinking Amagi near Mindanao in two succesful attacks we now sink the next Unryu... well done...

I have already put a lot of thoughts in what to do with my subs as they are now most often only targets for enemy ASW forces and their losses steadily increasing without much gain in return... an event like this is a morale boost of course and seems to make it worth it to keep my subs within enemy controlled space... guess Rainer thought we wouldn´t have subs in position North of Formosa but in fact, most of those that are around Formosa are patrolling North of it and this paid off today... being close to some bigger ports I´ve first thought the carrier could make it and we would only damage the ship but then torp two and torp three hit home which made me think the ship would be in severe trouble... hearing the sound for a ship sunk right after this attack I was sure the carrier was down...

what first looked like to be a not so great turn for us turned out to be an excellent day in war as we sink the next Japanese carrier... the enemy lost three fleet carriers (one bombed, the other two sunk by subs), the Allied lost one (bombed) with another halve dozen CVE (bombed) though...

Actually, I read your results and think you were lucky to have such low losses. If you need to know why, read up on the Eastern Front air battles. Once you understand why the P-39 and Me109 were dominate and the FW190 was a lousy fighter there and why the FW190 was a great fighter on the Western Front, you will understand your losses above. I have to say I am amazed at the depth in the air combat model. I did not expect it (obviously by your results above) so many things.

I get your point, which seems to be about the low altitude, well, how do you explain the March 10 turn which was also fought at 6000ft? I´m glad there were two examples that had both sides suffering the same fate (insane losses without inflicting any damage) and if 6000 ft was such an advantage for the Japanese against the 3.5:1 outnumbering Lightnings, it would have also been for the Japanese on their sweep, where the losses were even worse, while they even had better fighters.

The Corsair losses today were severe but I´m sure CV Katsuragi is sunk. The carrier went down with a daitai of A6M5c which is quite a step forward for IJN carrier based fighters as it carries a punch compared to the A6M5, the c isn´t produced yet though. I can only hope that the 93 aircraft sunk with the carrier are partially FOW because this would be quite a lot of aircraft on such a carrier. Isn´t the normal loadout something around 67?

the enemy fleet did a full speed run South, probably to get away from my subs around Formosa... well, Musashi ended up in front of the torp tubes of a sub patrolling off the Northern Philipines and is hit by a single MK-14... while not reported on fire or heavily damaged, I still think the hit wasn´t FOW and the BB should be damaged as Rainer´s comment about it wasn´t that bright... a carrier sunk yesterday and one of the beast sisters hit today is the morale boost the silent service needs... it makes me again think on the use though, perhaps I should concentrate all my subs closer to the land front as this would keep enemy ASW forces away from them and the subs would only operate against the enemy fleet if it intervenes... it would also mean though that we would stop any attacks on the enemy merchant fleet... with more and more modern E flooding the Seas we have to make a decision soon...

Butuan is 100% damaged for sure... we also sweep Hue from Hanoi to engage leaking Cap from the base South of it and are amazed by three P-38 squadron actually joining up in this attack... the result wasn´t so amazing as the enemy was diving on the incoming squadrons for quite some time which is quite interesting with a pre warning time of 8 minutes and the majority of the Cap being set to 6000ft... despite the fact that the enemy can´t even reach the Lightnings but that´s the old question about it anyway... it was a pretty even fight in the end with a big number of Lightnings damaged as usual...
