RE: When Animals Attack - Threadwar 3x3: Humans Strike Back
Here is the Intel Screen from the prior turn... combing through the data, we found that 4 Catalinas had been shot down, apparently intercepted when trying to get some wounded troops out of Manila. Otherwise, the point shift upwards in our score appears to be from better supply.

The Animals make their initial ground assault on Port Moresby. Although they haven’t brought many guns, they apparently hope to make up for that by naval bombardment and having the KB smack the defenders. Another bloody mess at Singapore - two more Animal units charge across the causeway and undergo a gauntlet of fire. The two new units (21st Mixed Brigade and 9th NLF) have the snot pounded of them, with the 21st losing ½ of its unadjusted AV, and the 9th NLF being reduced to 0 unadjusted AV:

RE: When Animals Attack - Threadwar 3x3: Humans Strike Back
Hi all,
Report from CIC US Armed Forces - 4th January 1942
----------------------------------------
Hi all,
Not a lot to report from the US CIC.
Several convoys are still sailing unmolested to Suva, the initial meeting point, carrying tonnes of vital supplies and fuel.
CV1 and CV2 are approaching the Aleutians but unfortunately towards the end of daylight hours a Japanese Mavis patol plane spotted CV1 (Lexington/Saratoga) nearing the Aleutians. My CAP did not manage to shoot down the bird before she escaped. Curses. It is highly probable the Japanese will now move all shipping away from the Aleutians area. As such we are modifying the plan a little bit. CV2 (Yorktown/Enterprise) will now head WNW towards the Kuriles in an attempt to cut off any escape route for Japanese shipping in the Aleutians. CV1 will proceed as planned heading towards Kiska area.

Here's the Intel Screen from the last turn - once again, points for bases fluctuate wildly due to supply considerations... and no points are scored for the LCP(L)s sunk...

RE: When Animals Attack - Threadwar 3x3: Humans Strike Back
AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 01/05/42
The Animals are trying surge tactics, and here comes a surge! They are pushing troop transports with escorts on what appears to be a coordinated effort in three major points: Sumatra (apparently Palembang), Timor, and the Aleutians - while the assault at Port Moresby continues. Meanwhile, they appear to be stalled for a while in Singapore and Manilla.
This diffuse effort may not work as well as they hoped... there was widespread bombing of their invasion forces today, and some of the bombs and torpedoes actually hit some ships!
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Round one: the continued assault on Pt. Moresby. Light on ground forces and attacking primarily with Naval Landing Forces which have infantry but little artillery, the IJN tries to help out its troops by shelling the bejezus out of the defenders, and later bombing them:

Guns lost 1
Vehicles lost 1
Airbase hits 1
Runway hits 11
Port hits 5
Port supply hits 13
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This was a bit of a surprise, but the IJN is surprised in turn. They unexpectedly decide to extend their foothold in the Aleutians, but they are ignored and/or missed warnings that the USN CVs were coming:
TF 136 troops unloading over beach at Kiska Island, 93,37

Numerous convoys are spotted heading towards Sumatra, the closest a mere 60 miles from Palembang. This first attack goes in after IJN heavy warships, and gets what one might expect:
Day Air attack on TF at 22,58

Aircraft Attacking:
6 x B-17D Fortress bombing at 10000 feet

Of course, the Allied defenders preferentially decide to attack the hex being protected by carrier fighters:
Day Air attack on TF at 24,54 - clear
Japanese aircraft
A5M4 Claude x 6 - F1/Sasebo Daitai
A6M2 Zero x 9 - CII-I Daitai

Martin 139: 3 damaged
Japanese Ships
CA Mogami
CA Kumano
Aircraft Attacking:
5 x Martin 139 bombing at 6000 feet
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Deciding the challenge of bombing a TF that is only 60 miles away is insufficient, the defending bombers wing across the waters to bomb a less defended target 300 miles away - and miss:
Day Air attack on TF at 25,54 - cloudy
Allied aircraft
Martin 139 x 2
No Allied losses
Japanese Ships
AK Tacoma Maru
Aircraft Attacking:
2 x Martin 139 bombing at 6000 feet
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Once again, the defenders fling themselves at carrier air, and once again come up short:
Day Air attack on TF at 24,54 - clear

Another IJN TF is spotted heading apparently towards Timor, and more attacks start out piecemeal:
Day Air attack on TF, near Labao at 30,75 - overcast
Allied aircraft
OS2U-3 Kingfisher x 9
Martin 139 x 3
Allied aircraft losses
OS2U-3 Kingfisher: 1 destroyed

Aircraft Attacking:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Another attack against the TF 300 miles away...

Allied aircraft
Martin 139 x 3
No Allied losses
Japanese Ships
PC Shonan Maru #6
Aircraft Attacking:
3 x Martin 139 bombing at 6000 feet
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Finally, some Martins go after the IJN TF only 60 miles from Palembang at Muntok - and finally score a hit on an occupied troopship!
Day Air attack on TF, near Muntok at 21,55 - cloudy
Allied aircraft
Martin 139 x 3
No Allied losses
Japanese Ships
AP Fuso Maru, Bomb hits 1, on fire
Japanese ground losses:
39 casualties reported
Aircraft Attacking:
3 x Martin 139 bombing at 6000 feet
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Deciding their prior attack was far too easy, the bombers switch back to attacking the heavily defended targets:
Day Air attack on TF at 24,54 - clear
Japanese aircraft
A5M4 Claude x 6 - F1/Sasebo Daitai
A6M2 Zero x 9 - CII-I Daitai

Martin 139: 4 damaged
Japanese Ships
MSW Toshi Maru #8
Aircraft Attacking:
4 x Martin 139 bombing at 6000 feet
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A large attack once again decides to go after targets they probably can’t hurt:
Day Air attack on TF at 22,58 - very cloudy - this is about 60 miles SW of Toboali:

Japanese Ships
BB Haruna
BB Kongo
Aircraft Attacking:
11 x Martin 139 bombing at 6000 feet
3 x B-17E Fortress bombing at 10000 feet
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
And yet more piecemeal attacks on the carrier-defended hex. The only thing good I can think about this is that the fighters do seem to be doing a good job in protecting the bombers:
Day Air attack on TF at 24,54
Japanese aircraft
A5M4 Claude x 4
A6M2 Zero x 9
Allied aircraft
Brewster 339D x 3
Martin 139 x 3

This will be my last report on this game. The pace has continued to slow on this game until it is now about 1 turn (day) game time for every 10 days real time... this will make the game around 50 years long. I don’t think I will live long enough to finish this as I will be over 100 years old. Given this, I have resigned my position in this game.

This was a bit of a surprise, but the IJN is surprised in turn. They unexpectedly decide to extend their foothold in the Aleutians, but they are ignored and/or missed warnings that the USN CVs were coming:

Numerous convoys are spotted heading towards Sumatra, the closest a mere 60 miles from Palembang. This first attack goes in after IJN heavy warships, and gets what one might expect:

Deciding the challenge of bombing a TF that is only 60 miles away is insufficient, the defending bombers wing across the waters to bomb a less defended target 300 miles away - and miss:

And yet more piecemeal attacks on the carrier-defended hex. The only thing good I can think about this is that the fighters do seem to be doing a good job in protecting the bombers:

RE: When Animals Attack - Threadwar 3x3: Humans Strike Back
Hi all,
A quick snapshot of the Aleutians theatre. As you can see CV 1 (Lexington/Saratoga) will move ENE tomorrow to attempt to attack enemy shipping. There are enemy AK's at Adak Island and enemy DD's currently at Umrak Island.
CV 2 (Enterprise/Yorktown) is just off view to the south and heading WNW towards the Lower Kuriles area to interdict any fleeing/reinforcing ships.
With KB near PM and with no developed airfields in the Aleutians it's a free reign for my CV's.

RE: When Animals Attack - Threadwar 3x3: Humans Strike Back
Against all odds, the game has continued after some shouts, screams, armtwisting, etc.
i did not sure that it would, and i am not sure the game will "go the distance", but i thought i might dust off this AAR and give an update...
We are rapidly approaching 1 year in real time, and have gotten not quite 2 months in game time... some real time in the interminable discussions of house rules, etc.
However, i hope to post an update soon as to the Allied side plans and dispositions... i think (hope) some exciting things will be happening soon.

RE: When Animals Attack - Threadwar 3x3: Humans Strike Back
'Twas the night before Christmas, and all through the Threadwar
The Animals had just gone past the Good Guys’ last game score ;
The ammo was stacked by the mortars with care,
In hopes that Animals would not soon be there;
The troops were all nestled snug in their forts,
While commanders had dozed off over combat reports;
And me in my helmet, and a good stiff nightcap,
Had just settled down to plan an attack,
When out on the ocean there arose such a clatter,
I sprang from my PC to see what was the matter.
Out of the window I saw only fogs,
I feared an assault from intelligent dogs.
The flares soon lit up the scene down below
Attempting to show any possible foe,
When, what to my wondering eyes should appear,
But hundreds of penguins mostly drunken on beer,
With a commander clad in cape and sarong
I knew in a moment it must be fabertong!!
And then thousands of squirrels led by Field Marshall Mike Solli,
They came through our defenses like something unholy;
And carrying small fir trees mostly pine and some spruce
Were myriads of dogs - dear Thread, it was Bruce!!
To the top of the barbed wire! to the top of the wall!
Now fire away! Fire away! Fire away all!"
Encouraged by the ravings of Nik of the Log,
When they met with an obstacle right down they did bog,
We were pelted by hundreds of posting of SPAM!!
And occasional jokes... not a great battle plan.
Their offensive had gone up in smoke and a “poof”
They had to retreat since they’d made a big goof.
As I drew out my keyboard, and was turning around,
When down the crashed the game with nary a sound.
I hit the reset key and did finally reboot,
After kicking my hard drive with the side of my foot.
The Animals had regrouped after using Bruce’s Wayback,
And his curs were now swarming in a big doggish pack.
I got on the phone to try and call Speedy...
To get reinforcements - I was feeling quite needy!
And maybe friend Niceguy could help smite the foe,
He distracted the Penguin with a draught of Merlot;
The squirrels were decoyed with plenty of nuts,
But the dogs were still moving - they were some crazy muts;
As they jumped over barbed wire, or crawled on their belly,
We knew they were coming - they were kinda smelly.
They were chubby and plump, and wore hornrimmed glasses,
But still I was worried they would kick all our @sses.
The penguins had been bought off with crates of old salmon,
Since their supplies were quite lacking - they’d been having a famine;
The squirrels had run off to chase cannon-fired pecan,
We hoped they would go back all the way to Japan,
We whacked Bruce’s pups and them hotly oppose,
With rolled up newspaper on the end of the nose;
They were finally defeated by a silent dog whistle,
And away they all flew like the down of a thistle.
But I heard them exclaim, before driven out of sight,
"Happy Threadmas to all, and to all a good-night."
The Animals had just gone past the Good Guys’ last game score ;
The ammo was stacked by the mortars with care,
In hopes that Animals would not soon be there;
The troops were all nestled snug in their forts,
While commanders had dozed off over combat reports;

RE: When Animals Attack - Threadwar 3x3: Humans Strike Back
After not posting anything for a month and a half (game time), I’m dusting this off to bring this up to date.
First, the Animals have managed to take Palembang and Southern Sumatra. North Sumatra is still holding, and is the main route for troops evacuating from Singapore.
There was a brief attempt to slow down the Animals attacking Singapore, which worked a little bit, but not nearly as well as I had hoped... British fast transport DDs landed troops at Kuala Lumpur and Johore Bahru (elements of the 18th Division), and a sub commando raid was landed at Ban Don up near Victoria Point. The Animals reacted very vigorously, apparently transferring aircraft like mad to Kota Bharu and Kuantan, and flying troops into Ban Don. Neither Johore Bahru nor Ban Don fell, but Kuala Lumpur did, and this damaged the resource centers (and supplies). Unfortunately, the troops did not hold out as long as I had hoped for, but this did slow the attacks on Singapore for a while. This also cost 2 of the DDs - one when the TF (ordered full speed to go to Port Blair with plenty of fuel) unexpectedly stopped and decided to be targets for numerous Nells, Betty, Lilys.
Meanwhile, most of Borneo has also fallen - only Sampit remains. Java has been invaded and the Allies have been pushed back into Soerabaja, which has been building forts as fast as possible. One Animal TF was supposed to dash in and take out an Allied TF, but the TF commander got confused and conducted a bombardment attack instead, which provided some spectacular fireworks in the harbor. CL Kitakami and
CA Kinugasa each took 16 hits , CA Aoba took 11 shell hits, and all three were set ablaze. Kinugasa sank about 10 days later (at Balikpapan)... I’m still hoping Kitakami and Aoba will join her.
After a brisk defense of Bali (in which some British and Dutch CLs and a single DD conducted several overmatched battles, but managed to intercept a large lightly escorted TF much to the Animals detriment), Bali finally fell. However, Niceguy’s aircraft were very active and managed to fatally wound CS Mizuho, which is the biggest VP ship to sink so far in the game.
In China, there was some action between Sinyang and Honan, as the main bulk of freed up IJA troops moved along the road, pushing back the Chinese to 50,32 - the hex between Kafieng and Honan. I had expected to be able to hold the ravening Animals there, but in a surprise move, several divisions (over 80000 “men”) crossed the river from Sinyang, initiating a shock attack! This worked well for the Japanese forces, and the Chinese were pushed back into Honan where they started building forts as fast as possible.
Near Yangku, after several small battles the Chinese finally drove the IJA back into the city. Field Marshall Solli managed to rush several more units into Yangku, and by the time the Chinese crawled into Yangku, they faced the equivalent of 3.5 divisions, and were quickly pushed back out again.
The move towards Honan allowed an opportunity that the snail-like Chinese were not able to take advantage of... several corps faced 4 units in Sinyang, and started to move to attack. Unfortunately, strange things happened with the orders 3 days in a row, and the Chinese failed to move. Finally, they did make the move, but by that time Field Marshall Solli had rushed 3 more units into the city, and they repulsed the Chinese after a “good” die roll - the attack worked but cost the Animals 2148 casualties (to around 600 Chinese).
However, at the same time, the Chinese FINALLY have managed to march into Ichang, and this time there was NOT a good roll for the Japanese – they attacked the arriving troops (at least 7 corps and an HQ) and were hurt badly with almost 3000 casualties to less than 70 for the Chinese.
Meanwhile, numerous Chinese forces are also marching on Nanchang.
In New Guinea, the Animals have secured Port Moresby and every base except Merauke in the South. Lunga, Tulagi, Buin and Shortlands have also fallen.
In the Aleutians, Admiral Speedy’s carriers sank a number of ships including 4 DDs before retreating before an expected onslaught of the KB. Several more islands have fallen by “autocapture”.
The big sore point for the Animals, however, remain Manila and Singapore. In Manila, house to house fighting has taken many thousand animal troops to the Pet Cemetery, and although continually assaulted by land and air, the Allied troops continue to hold out.
Singapore also continues to hold. After losing a fort at the beginning of the battle, it was rebuilt and none have fallen since. Numerous troops have been evacuated by submarine and other means.

RE: When Animals Attack - Threadwar 3x3: Humans Strike Back
AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 02/15/42 - COMPRESSED
I am going to abridge these reports a bit to leave out the less interesting (to the reader, at least) parts, including the attacks where there were few or no casualties or damage (i.e. minesweeping actions, ineffective bombing, sub actions without results). This turn was a bit strange... several sub actions (not shown) where no one fired a shot on either side. I’ll have to see if the subs in question on the “sub attack” side were out of torps or something.
Otherwise - the Animals (under Field Marshall Bruce) are attacking Soerabaja with lots of troops including at least 2 Engineer units, and while they are inflicting casualties, they are not taking down the forts.
In other big news, Ichang FINALLY falls!

Once again, I’ll try to leave out the most boring parts. As a summary - the sieges of Singapore, Soerabaja and Manila continue with no end dates in sight... the Animals land at Milne bay, determined to consolidate their hold on New Guinea... the Animals advance to Honan while the Chinese are about to hit Nanchang with the bulk of their army apparently unbeknownst to Field Marshall Solli... desultory sub actions continue with the usual USN torpedo failures.
