Aviation Units:
5 x 270 aviation: 25,000 AP

Engineer:
IA 10th: 1,000 AP ( 18 Eng)
IA 15th: 2,000 AP ( 54 Eng)

811th USAAF: 2,000 AP (130 Eng)
810th USAAF: 2,000 AP (130 Eng)

HQs:
Air: 7 (14,000 AP)
Land: 2 (8000 AP)
Naval: 1 (3000 AP)

India will also contain 14 partial Brigades refitting which are envisioned as providing basic garrison requirements for northern and western Indian cities and two US Divisions which will arrive as reinforcements soon. These are US 32nd Div due in 21 days ( 300 AV ), US 37th Div due in 53 days (300 AV).

Divisional Strength:
Non-Chinese divisional strength is:
7 Divisions, 2,010 AV requiring 89,000 AP sealift.

Chinese units: 5 ROC Divisions, 6 ROC Field Armies comprising 2,330 AV requiring 64,000 AP sealift.

Chinese units will respawn in Chungking in 30 days if they are destroyed so including them means that I'm not actually risking the loss of major forces for a year and a half. So, my first choice is to include all the Chinese units in the invasion. This gives the invasion 2,330 AV and leaves 80,000 AP ( I always include a 10% fudge factor for loading issues ).

Regiments & Brigades ( full-strength only )
Indian: 15 Bdes comprising 1670 AV and requiring 46,000 AP sealift.
Oz: 4 Bdes comprising 410 AV and requiring 12,000 AP sealift.
Nz: 2 Bdes comprising 140 AV and requiring 8,000 AP sealift.
US: 3 Regt comprising 270 AV and requiring 12,000 AP sealift.

I will commit all 3 US Regiments and 8 of the Indian Regiments for a total of 1,160 AV and a sealift requirement of 40,000 AP. This leaves 40,000 AP and 450,000 AK.

Armour: [/]
10 armoured units comprising 710 AV requiring 69,000 AK sealift.

So, commit all armoured units for a total of 710 AV and a requirement of 80,000 AK sealift. So, we're left with 40,000 AP and 370,000 AK.

AAA, Engineer and Aviation units
All 11 AAA units, 3 of the Aviation Regiments and all 4 Engineer Units will be committed. This will require 25,000 AP and 50,000 AK leaving me with 15,000 AP and 400,000 AK.

HQs
It is essential to bring 3 Air HQs. It would also be useful to bring two Land HQs and a naval HQ to boost repair in Batavia once it is captured. This will require 19,000 AP or 75,000 AK.

So, there is 15,000 AP left uncommitted and 325,000 AK. So, that will allow me to bring IA 19th Division in the APs and the Oz 7th division in the uncommitted AKs. I will also wait for the US 32nd Division and bring that along as well as 2nd USMC Division and 2nd USMC Parachute Bn. I don't need additional sealift for these US units as they are coming in their own ships.

So, after all of that I have no AP sealift left but about 175,000 AK sealift left. That should be sufficient to bring in 100,000 tons of supplies plus a few Base Forces to thicken up the AV support and provide some basing at subsidiary bases.

So, now that it's all settled what am I going to bring to the invasion of Java?

6 ROC Field Armies,
5 ROC Divisions,
1 IA Division,
1 US Army Division,
2nd USMC Division,
3 US Regiments,
8 Indian Regiments,
10 Armoured Regiments/Bns,
2nd USMC Parachute Bn,
11 AAA Regiments,
3 Aviation Regiments,
4 Engineer Units,
3 Air HQs,
2 Land HQs,
1 Naval HQ.

In total that should comprise roughly 5,200 AV. I am planning to have small sub-borne commando units scope out Tjilitjap, Djokjakarta and Malang to see which are less heavily defended ( I am mostly scoping out Malang to force the enemy to move forces toward it so that I can land at Tjilitjap and Djokjakarta). I also hold Teloekbetoeng and so it is eminently possible that I will simply unload into a friendly port and march south through Java if the defences at Tjilitjap, Djokjakarta etc are too strong.

If the capture of Java goes well my current concept of operations is to try to exploit through southern Borneo along the Bandjermasin, Balikpapan, Tarakan line before taking Jolo and moving to relieve Mindanao ---- I still hold Davao ( Level 4 port, Level 3 airfield ), Cebu ( Level 2 port and airfield ) and Manilla ( 70,000 supplies, Level 9 port and Level 3 airfield ). This would be a thrust the Japanese simply could NOT afford to ignore and should take the pressure off a lot of other fronts. It will also necessitate the committment of much of the Imperial Japanese Navy to the theatre under extremely unfavourable conditions which should allow me to inflict significant losses.

In addition a thrust along this line will prevent the flow of troops and reinforcements into Australia and should lessen the likelihood of a significant invasion of Australia. Note, also, the lack of Australian divisions in the invasion force. I want Jagdfluger to think that Oz contains its full compliment of divisions.

Well, that's that settled then.

Ouch, KB comes out to play and torches 30 of my planes on the ground. I have lots of replacements for the planes they've torched so it isn't too bad. Still, this might mean the abandonment of my CAP over Kodiak which would, in short order, spell the end of that base.

I lost a fair few fighters here BUT I scored quite a few hits on the enemy merchant fleet here. All in all the trade is worth it, especially as P-40Bs are obsolescent and I might as well use them up now while they can achieve a little.

Japanese paratroops attempt to take Kunchang. I happen to think they'll succeed next turn. It is a pity BUT not that much of one since:
a) I have always been planning to abandon eastern China entirely and
b) by taking it with paras he ensures he won't have the AV available to garrison it enough to prevent serious attrition of resources.

Disbanding ships in range of enemy bombers is just asking for it, IMO.

*chuckle* Well, I think everyone's allowed a mistake or two, particularly in a subsidiary theatre while he is busy invading CONUSA [8D]. To be fair to Jagdfluger I had spent the last 3 months of the game flying any units which arrived in China out into India ASAP and haven't launched a single bombing mission except while B-17 units transited on their way to India. So I think that while he had 100 ships in Canton ( preparatory to an amphibious invasion of Wuchow ) and he had a fighter unit there he got complacement and just didn't expect me to be prepared to lose the fighters, bombers and supply that a strike would entail.

In other news it seems like the strength of my reaction has caused him to call off the invasion of Wuchow... although I expect him to advance toward it overland from Canton.

I have a question: If jagdfluger breaches the 132 hex line in CONUSA and activates US reinforcements will that include US Western Command? I am asking since US Western Command is committed to the Indian theatre and thus if its troops are accelerated ( giving me an additional 3 or 4 divisions at Aden instantly ) I may well begin the invasion of Java even earlier than previously anticipated --- especially as I'll need to do something to take the pressure off CONUSA --- even with advanced reinforcements I'll only get an additional 2 divisions and my total LCU AV in CONUSA will amount to only a little over 2,000 AV. I have forts and terrain on my side but even so 2,000 AV doesn't go very far at all.

Overall I have to say that his pilot losses must be pretty severe for him not to be resisting my air force deployment into China more strenuously. I am considering going into Java a little early. Even if I begin moving now I won't be able to invade prior to the end of April 1942 and even then I won't have the Chinese forces I want. It'll take until close to the end of May for me to be ready to go with the Chinese forces but I definitely want to begin pushing my forces harder and consider loading my Chinese forces directly from Calcutta instead of waiting for them to march to Cochin for safer and unnoticeable loading there. I am going to have a count of my 15 knot + ( ideally 20 knot+ ) APs and will consider just loading the Chinese Field Armies as a 2nd wave using my fastest transports to get them to Java as shortly after the first wave as possible. If I do this then, honestly, I could go by the end of April substituting a couple of the newly arrived US divisions for the Chinese formations.

If I go with less I'll have to attack more aggressively though - meaning I have to hit southern Borneo with less recon, less preparation and as soon after hitting Java as I can manage. Why is this? Well if I have little force and he counter-attacks into Java he might retake it whereas if I have the same small force but can take some bases east of Java then when he counter-attacks he will reduce those little satellite bases first buying me the time I need to bring my Chinese Field Armies into play and making Java too strong to retake.

Well, that's that settled then.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 03/20/42

Today was a major day for this war. Coal Harbour fell and the P-40B showed itself to be nothing but a target. On the positive front I have converted 2 Canadian bomber units to Beauforts with a view to getting some torpedo strikes on all this Japanese shiping at Coal Harbour.

Very heavy fighter losses to no avail. I have a response to this. Tomorrow my B-18s are ordered to mount airfield attacks. If I can close the airfield once then my chances of keeping it closed are actually pretty good. Keeping it closed will allow me to attrit his fighters through forcing them to fly LRCAP and will also allow me to bomb his supplies, forcing him to bring in AKs to resupply the base --- AKs my bombers can then destroy.

Overall the situation is that Alaska is clearly lost and CONUSA is under serious threat, China is looking pretty stable at the moment and my delaying tactics around Australia have worked extremely well. India is looking very strong indeed and in terms of invading Java my only question is whether I wait until the Chinese are in place or if I just leave ultra-fast transports behind to bring them to Java as part of the 2nd wave of forces.

Given how the sitution around CONUSA is going I think that it is more important to go early than it is to go fully prepared. Comments and objections etc welcome. It is a big decision. If the invasion of Java goes poorly I'm sure he'll exploit the situation in CONUSA and try to capture it. If he succeeds ( which he should ) I'll have to sue for peace.

Regarding your analysis of strategic bombing: very interesting! Just to nitpick: a resource center produces 1,25 resource points and 1 supply point per day, so you have to multiply every hit by 1,25 to calculate it's effect on Japanese HI. Furthermore, manpower also needs resources, but I guess this effect can be neglected, since there are enough resource centers under Jap. control to feed HI and manpower.

Other than that, I can only echo what others have already said: the few oil producing cities within Allied range can be more easily defended by Japan than the dispersed resource production. Starting to hit oil production early makes your next moves rather predictable, which should always be avoided.

I have a question: If jagdfluger breaches the 132 hex line in CONUSA and activates US reinforcements will that include US Western Command?
All troops/air groups arriving at West Coast bases are accelerated by 6 months. So I guess Western Command units won't be accelerated, assuming that they are displayed to arrive in India in your reinforcement queue. OTOH, something unpredictable might happen - I don't think a situation like this was ever tested... [;)]

CONUSA: You really think he can take San Francisco in case your Java invasion fails?! What does your reinforcement schedule say about West Coast arrivals?

Note how quickly he has managed to beef up the CAP at Canton. There are over 100 fighters on CAP there now. Unfortunately for Jagdfluger I'm a believer in checking out the technical/tactical characteristics of my forces and I noted that the B-17 Es ceiling is slightly higher than that of the Me-109E-4. It is less than that of the Ki-43 I and Ki-44 III but the Ki-44 III won't be in service until January 1943 and if Jagdfluger wants to tangle with my B-17 Es in Ki-43 Is then he is welcome to do so. Losses should favour me by a significant margin in such a match-up.

27 Allied fighters lead the way for 62 P-29 strafers, 89 level bombers and 7 Dauntlesses. They are opposed by 33 Zeroes and Rufes and things actually don't go too badly --- I am VERY pleased by how my changes to the A2A model (based on RHS but with a few significant tweaks) work. Bombers don't fight through Zero swarms as easily as they do in some of the mods which have tweaked the A2A model but neither do they get cut down en masse.

Mutsu was actually hit by 3 consecutive 1000lb bombs dropped by my Dauntlesses but not a single bomb penetrated the deck armour [:(] so all of this effort was wasted. In contrast the 250lb bombs dropped by the B-18s actually did some good work knocking out at least 2 AAA weapons and a DP 5 inch turret on the 2 BBs. The P-39s also managed to achieve some useful hits on DDs with their cannons and Arashi ate a 250lb bomb. All in all nothing decisive is happening yet but I'm wearing down the enemy AAA defences a little and preparing the way for my torpedo-bombers. Tomorrow however I will concentrate on hitting the airfield at Coal Harbour. I want that airfield out of action ASAP or my losses will become unsustainable.

And below you can see visually what my B-17s flying from Calcutta were facing. In anticipation of this I've been building up Rangoon and Rangoon is now a Level 5 airfield. With a bit of time I'll build it to a full Level 9 airfield, base a cruiser TF there to discourage bombardment runs and be able to mount B-17E raids all over Malaysia, Thailand and western China. I'll hit any docked ships I can find which should nicely complicate the Japanese plan to exploit their holdings --- and, importantly, the farther east the Japanese must base their CAs, CLs, DDs and APs the longer it will take them to reach Java once my invasion convoy is spotted. As always the groundwork for success 2 months from now is laid by decisions taken 2 months ago. That's what makes playing WiTP so much fun.

VSWG: I only have two divisions arriving at West Coast bases over the next 6 months. It won't be enough if he really commits --- which is one reason I'm going to begin upgrading the fighters in CONUSA to P-40Es from P-36s, P-40Bs and P-43s and changing the B-18s and Blenheims to B-26 Marauders and Beauforts. The next CONUSA target he hits after Coal Harbour is going to run into a completely different generation of fighters and far more lethal bombers.

Right now though I have to fight with what I have ( although I'm upgrading 2 B-18 groups to B-25s and A-20s and my two Blenheim groups to Beauforts ) which means that, at best, I can damage DDs, CLs and, possibly, a CA or two but really won't be able to sink much of the surface combat TF covering this invasion. Still, if all you can do is damage then that's what you'd better do. As you can see I belong to the school of thought which says that bombs rarely sink major combat vessels, for that you want torpedoes.

Below you can see the losses for the day. I have over 100 P-39s in reserve so I can absorb those losses and while I have no B-18s in reserve I am upgrading squadrons as possible once I have enough B-26s, B-25s or A-20s available so I am keeping my squadrons somewhat up to strength. Zero losses now hover around 450 so far so he should have quite a large pool of these available to him as he is building about 250 per month at this stage.

I'm almost reaching the end of my reserves for the defence of CONUSA. I estimate I can mount another 3 days of attacks like today and then the strength of my attacks will begin to wane. Hopefully I can cause sufficient loss in those 3 days to convince the IJN to back off.

Hi Nemo,

I was looking at the Transport planes in this mod - can they lift para units w/o leaving behind small chunks of the unit? If a Para unit has the following values AP 2000, AK 3500, LST 2250 and I have a transport with a load of 2000 (lbs I think?) how do I caluclate how many transport planes I need to move a unit?

So far so good on the updates you sent me for your mod. Why did you take out the invasion of Hawaii on the 1st turn? Just curious... I'll be opening up the game with strikes @ Russia which will be new territory for me. Looks fun tho.

The resource managment looks daunting tho. I understand the logic behind it - it's just gunna force me to count beans much tighter than in CHS or standard.

Have you been scamming the new EOS version discussions - keeping allied production on the board? I like that idea - if I gotta count beans then the allies should have to also <grin>.
TTFN,

Mike

1EyedJacks,

Umm, to be honest I don't know, I always concentrate my transports and thus just use as many of them ( and as large ones) as possible for any given mission. I have often managed to move an entire unit in one go when using Tabbys or G5N2s.

Why no invasion of Hawaii? Well that was added into RHS:EOS after I diverged from them so I didn't take it out. I didn't add it in though as I wanted players to be as free as possible in their choices. My mod is ALL about maximising player choice. The Soviet Union is active not because it should always be involved from 7th December but just because it gives BOTH players the option to start a war or just to play around with border skirmishes etc.

Aye resource management is a major issue in this mod... One other thing you may want to look at is the plane upgrades using the WitpEditor... I have removed most of the auto-upgrades such that you will have to invest in your mid and late-war fighters if you want to produce large numbers of them. E.g. If you build 300 Me-109 factories then they will NOT auto-upgrade to any new IJA fighters at all --- except to take part in the 1st January 1945 mass auto-upgrade of obsolete factories to produce the Ki-115 suicide plane. Conversely if you want 300 Ki-44 IIIs to be produced monthly by 1st January 1943 then you had better invest 300,000 tons of supply into repairing all of those factories. My intention with this was to create a more reasonable production model in the mid and late-war years. Sure Japan can still produce hundreds of top-range fighters in 1943 and 1944 but it will have to sacrifice elsewhere to do so. It won't just get that production for free like it does in stock etc.

As to on-map Allied production. I'm not convinced. Production really wasn't an issue for the Allies and I think the current model works to show that.

Well, it seems clear that the Coal Harbour airfield is now fully closed. I am going to withdraw my bombers ( which have been suffering massive losses ) and concentrate on keeping it closed using a gaggle of about 120 P-43As and P-36s. Why these obsolete planes? Simple, their operational ceiling is above that of the Zeroes and Rufes they will face so they can fly in over the target above the Zeroes, tip over and then scream down on the target before racing away again as quickly as possible. I am betting that while the damage inflicted by each squadron will be low the cumulative effect of 120 strikes per day will keep the airfield closed. This will also enable me to increase pilot experience dramatically and once these squadrons' experience is above 70 I will switch them into P-40Es and try to defeat the Zero menace once again.

Japanese forces CAPTURE Lanchow [Cent China] base !!!

As part of my planned withdrawal from eastern China I have abandoned some bases hoping he will parachute in and take them. When he parachutes in he will find his troops don't meet the garrison requirements and much of the resources and oil he was hoping to capture will end up damaged.

In other news it seems that a Japanese cruiser TF has moved from Victoria Point to Tavoy. I am interpreting this as an attempt to bombard Rangoon and, in response, I'm moving a couple of hundred fighters, my Pe-2s and as many B-26s and Beauforts as I can muster into the base next to Rangoon. I'm gambling that if he is planning a risky bombardment then he will be aiming for Rangoon ( where I've station over 200 planes for most of the last month as opposed to the little airfield to the south-east where I've stationed precisely 18 planes ( all patrol and recon ) for the past fortnight.

I've also put my A-20Bs and B-25s on naval attack at Calcutta. With any luck they should be able to pick off cripples and transports if the Japanese actually move on Rangoon.

It was a Guerilla Regiment which had to Shock Attack as it crossed a river. It had functional squads ( about 20 ) the turn before it crossed the river but I think that during the fire phase ( which precedes the Shock Attack phase ) all of the squads it began with were disabled [:D]. So, there's a lesson here guys. Do NOT expect your single Chinese guerilla regiment to be able to Shock Attack across a river into the depths of 15 Japanese divisions [8D]

It looks like you correctly predicted that the IJA will be able to overrun Alaska. A modest suggestion for game balance and historical accuracy in this scenario: some Canadian Home Guard units. (Perhaps Mounties hastily equipped with rifles.)
Civil war? What does that mean? Is there any foreign war? Isn't every war fought between men, between brothers?

Harlock,

Yes, I think I might add some large but inexperienced Brigade-sized forts in Alaska and a few more inexperienced infantry squads in USA forts to simulate Home Guard units taking to the field. They couldn't be redeployed but if the Japs invade they would quickly gain experience and hold out. I could even link the size of the fort to the size of the urban connurbation.

rtrapasso,
You do that [:D].

Allied forces CAPTURE Naga/Pili/Daet [PH] base !!!

And my tank battalion continues to advance in southern Luzon. It won't make it to Manilla and Japanese seaborne landings will land behind it cutting it off BUT it can create a second pocket and there's distraction value in that.
