Stopping an Invidious Empire.

Post by Nemo121 »

Well I thought I'd kick off an AAR for my turn-around game with Jagdfluger in which he is playing as the Japanese and I'm playing as the Allies. We are playing this game to check out the balance in this mod and with that in mind I want to test what will happen if the Allies are ueber-aggressive as I feel that if they are ueber-aggressive then the Japanese could falter. I would be happy to find this isn't so but I fear that the early balance is less in favour of the Japanese than it should be.There are a couple of key issues which will determine Allied strategy and it is as well to discuss them now to set the parameters for future decisions.

1. Can China survive by itself in-game?
Absolutely not. Concentrated resource bombing will reduce China to impotence by mid-42. It is therefore essential that China gain significant additional resources as quickly as possible. There are three possible means for doing so:

a) offensive action by Chinese forces within China to gain additional resource centres. A temporary solution which is still eminently vulnerable to a resource bombing campaign and which also has the added disadvantage of having to occur in the teeth of major Japanese forces.

b) offensive action into Manchukuo combined with a Soviet offensive to link Chinese mass with Soviet supply sources and force the committment of significant ground forces to this theatre. This could be a very useful solution if it worked but the trick is getting the initial Soviet breach. Japanese forces in Manchuria are actually quite strong and their defensive positions are excellent. However if this worked it would be the longest-lasting and most disruptive option.

c) offensive action aimed at Thailand/Burma/Malaysia. Rather than taking the defensive measure of reinforcing Burma a little why not just use the forces in southern and western China to push through Thailand and disrupt the Japanese offensive against Malaysia? It secures supply centres, diverts Japanese follow-on troops and, when the inevitable Japanese counter-attack routs my forces they should be able to withdraw, in good order, into Burma.

2. Soviet Union.
The majority of the border crossings into Manchukuo are wooded or mountainous or very heavily fortified. Any offensive here will have to be very finely judged to ahieve any success. With that said though there are 1 or 2 areas which may be open to exploitation. Again the trick isn't to achieve major victories but just to die down lots and lots of Japanese troops so that the Japanese waste time and manpower which could be better spent elsewhere.

The Soviet air force cannot survive in close contact with the IJAAF or IJNAF and so, apart from a couple of bastions for Allied heavy bombers, the Soviet air force will move to Thailand etc with a view to supporting Chinese operations in that area.

3.DEI.

Well I think that the key here will be to just flood in as many reinforcements as possible from India and Australia in order to delay the Japanese for as long as possible. With the very large number of torpedo-bombers available to Allied forces it should be possible to stage into and out of DEI bases quite randomly and continue to take quite a toll of any Japanese assault shipping so long as the Allies hold more than 2 or 3 substantial bases.

4. Pacific:
Well, I will fight to hold the Northern Route to Japan via the Aleutians but short of that I don't plan to do anything but sit tight and dig in. If I can reinforce Midway early on then I'll do that. If I can't then so be it.

In the south I'll try to hold at Noumea but will happily let everything else fall.

Naval forces: I plan to expend my naval forces in quite extensive fights for my forward positions. Every enemy ship damaged or sunk in such fighting will be one less enemy ship available for the invasion of 2nd and 3rd phase targets and just might be what saves India and Oz from full-scale invasion.

Aerial forces: I plan expend my obsolescent machinegun-armed fighters on 100 foot strafing runs against airfields and enemy shipping whilst saving my obsolescent cannon-armed fighters for protection of my bomber bastions ( bases I will set up beyond the range of enemy Zeros to allow reinforcement and rest of my long-range bomber squadrons). In the meantime my best fighters will be concentrated at one or two bases in order to provide some level of protection while bombers base out of those bases.

The main questions still left undecided are:
1. Do I use PP to transfer US divisions from the West Coast to Aden in order to reinforce India against a presumed Japanese attack?

2. To which theatre do I commit the Allied carriers? Should I commit them to raiding in the Pacific, covering convoys to the Aleutians, the DEI or just providing defence for India? ... 4 US CVs + 3 or so UK CVs would make one hell of a force for opposing landings in India but they would be unable to face up to the full might of the IJN. On the other hand they would draw the IJN away from the Pacific and that might give me some increased freedom of action in that theatre. Choices, choices.
John Dillworth: "I had GreyJoy check my spelling and he said it was fine."
Well, that's that settled then.

Well after a long lead-in period during which Jagdfluger was plotting his turn and had a few real life issues to get around this game is on. We are using pretty much the same rules as were in force for the game between myself and AndyMac although, to be fair, I've loosened some of the restrictions on first turn landings.

In the first run-through of the turn Jagdfluger launched naval bombardments of Batavia, Palembang, landed at Singkawang, Bandjermasin and Koepang. The landings were in error while the naval bombardments of Batavia and Palembang were just taking advantage of the difference between invasion and bombardment. Unfortunately since it wiped out most of my fleet and since the logic in keeping ships east of a point about 180 miles east of Singapore on December 7th applied equally to warships and merchant ships we agreed to cancel the bombardments and those landings. We also agreed troops wouldn't land at Kendari or Amboina on Turn 1. In the end they did land there on turn 1 in the do-over but we agreed they wouldn't attack until December 10th which was mutually agreeable.

So, all in all we agreed the terms and after 1 redo have settled into the game.

The only other thing of note was that Saratoga was sunk in port in San Diego on turn 1 following a strike by multiple Japanese CVs. I agreed that this wasn't outruled by the rules and so it was allowed to be ordered again in the do-over. Unfortunately the AAA proved much more effective the 2nd time around and while damaged the Saratoga survived.

Apart from the above there are pretty much no house rules. Based on pre-game discussions I expect china or the Soviet Union to be his primary targets and for Jagdfluger to then use the troops freed up by the destruction of the Soviet Union/or China to overwhelm Australia and India.

I, in turn, have decided to abandon Malaysia and the Phillipines with a view to putting up a really stiff fight in Java and Sumatra. My initial goal is just to hold Kendari. After that I'll do whatever seems feasible.

All in all in the first day the Japanese managed to sink 92 ships, including 56 submarines, have declared war on Britain, America, DEI and the Soviet Union. On the plus side while I have lost just under 400 planes I have also managed to destroy just over 250 enemy planes including over 20 Zeroes. All in all this is going to be interesting and seeing as the Soviet Union was struck with no opportunity to redeploy forces it looks like it will fall quickly. I don't even have a single infantry division starting in Vladivostok so this should prove easy pickings for the Japanese if they are serious and Jagdfluger is not going to attack unless he is in deadly earnest.

qgaliana,

We are playing my Empires Ablaze mod which features enhanced Allies and Japan ( Japan more enhanced than the Allies). We played one previous game under this mod which we called a halt to in April 42 in which I played Japan. I was concerned about the game balance so Jagdfluger and I decided to swap sides and have a fairly free-form game with me playing as Allies.

Tomorrow the entire might of the ABDA navy and Boise is going to hit the Kendari landings. My basic concept is that the Allies do NOT have the power to hurt well-protected Japanese invasions but DO have the power to hurt secondary invasion forces. Hurt enough secondary invasions and you force the enemy to limit the tempo of his operations significantly. Well, that's the concept behind my operations.

Rabaul is definitely about to fall. Fortunately it has held long enough for me to fly most of the PBYs in the Pacific into it and onto the DEI - where they will be used to air transport troops out of the Phillipines when Manilla is invested. At the very least I plan to air transport out significant cadres of the US forces in the Phillipines.

Well, the expected Japanese strike on Pearl Harbour comes in and does very little damage actually. 2 BBs are entirely unscathed while only 2 are heavily damaged and none are in danger of sinking. Most of my CAs and CLs and almost all of my DDs are capable of striking out against incoming invasion convoys over the coming days. Tomorrow they will strike.

Over the course of the day I have sunk 7 Japanese ships and inflicted 111 aerial losses in return for 138 of my own. At this stage of the war I think this is an eminently credible showing. Tomorrow the Kendari invasion force gets obliterated and the day after that we should have our first carrier battle as my two USN CVs steam toward Hawaii in order to complicate the IJN's operational problem.

Well, this thing hasn't been updated in a while. Fighting has been extremely vicious over the past month and we have now reached January 15th 1942, a suitable time for a recap.

2801 Allied and 1661 Japanese planes have been lost. I have concentrated, where possible, on the naval aviation aspect of the Japanese force and over 750 of the Japanese planes lost have been Zeroes ( almost 250 lost ), Vals or Kates. My reason for this is that when the Japanese come for India I want to be able to attrit their carrier-based squadrons in the first phase and ensure Jagdfluger doesn't have a sufficient reserve to just fly new carrier-capable squadrons in to replace his losses. For the last fortnight Allied and Japanese losses have been roughly equal which bodes well.

106 Japanese ships have been sunk to 412 Allied ships ( the Day 1 bombings of the Phillipino, Hawaiian and Soviet harbours netted about 200 ships by the time all the cripples were polished off so there was very little opportunity to save much of anything from these areas. What was salvageable has been saved). 1 Japanese BB, 4 CLs and about 16 DDs have been sunk but the real toll lies in the number of damaged ships. At present just 4 Japanese BBs appear to be available for offensive action, half of the CAs have been badly damaged by mines, torpedo strikes or surface action and at least 30 DDs have either hit mines or been damaged by bombs. Enemy surface combat TFs have been extremely rare and quite light in the past fortnight - e.g. when the invasion of Hawaii began it was supported by 4 BBs, 6 CAs, 4 CLs and roughly 2 dozen DDs. At present this surface combat force has been reduced to a combat-capable force of 1 BB, 1 CA, 1 CL and 6 DDs. I have thrown my shipping into the fray with abandon to achieve this reduction in force whilst keeping a core of surface combat ships available in India as my whole focus is in pulling the rug out from under any Indian invasion. My plan for this game is to plough through Burma, Thailand and Java/Sumatra from India. I won't fight back much along the usual island-hopping route but will, instead, seek to disembowel the Japanese Empire using India as a base - thus losing PH is painful but not fatal but losing India will result in the loss of the game... and so to avoid that the US Pacific fleet has engaged in unfavourable attrition with local Japanese forces.

2 US CVs were sunk off Pearl Harbour within a couple of days of the war starting as the Japanese trap thereabouts sprang shut. Hawaii, except for Pearl Harbour is now under siege with 100 bombers, 100 fighters ( Mikes and Zeroes ) surging over Hawaii daily. I count at least a doen carriers enforcing a blockade in the seas around PH but am managing to mount raids with light surface forces and dive-bombers from time to time. My submarine mining campaign is in full swing and while Japan will, eventually, take PH their losses in light surface forces, medium bombers and APs/AKs have been very heavy.

The central Phillipines, Baguio Pass, Clarke, Manilla, Lingayen etc are still in Allied hands as is northern Java to Batavia. 3 separate amphibious invasions of northern and southern Java were repulsed ( costing the Japanese the BB Hiei, severe damage to 3 further BBs, including 5 torpedoes into the Fuso and severe damage to a half-dozen heavy cruisers ) before the 4th invasion last week made land near Kragen. Soerabaja is surrounded but its garrison is buying time for Palembang, Batavia and, ultimately, India.

I hold PM and have managed to hold off the Japanese landing force there. Occasional Japanese supply runs and bombardment runs occur, costing the Japanese an average of a ship per run.

I hold Noumea although the Japanese hold pretty much everything else except Fiji in the central Pacific ( I have not contested these landings as I wrote this area off at game start). No Japanese landings have occurred in Australia but it will be just a matter of time.

India and Burma... The Japanese have not taken Burma and large Chinese forces are retreating from the southern and easternmost portions of China with a view to being evacuated to India via Burma. In India I can much more easily resupply them and use them to bolster my defence.

India is the fortress I have sacrificed much to build. I have just under 3,000 AV in place to defend India with another 1,000 AV ( mostly chinese ) due in the next month, with another 1,000 due the month after. In addition I have gathered some 1,800 fighters and bombers ( including LaGG-3s, MiG-3s, Yaks, a solid core of over 100 Hurricanes, B-25s, B-26s, A-20s, P-40Es, I-16s etc). Overall each airframe is overmatched by the Zero but taken together I hope that numbers will allow me to both attrit and exhaust the Japanese fleet if it comes calling. If it doesn't then I will just fly aviation support into Rangoon, followed by fighters and bombers and engage in an attritional aerial campaign from there.

The real key to India is, as I see it, to prevent Jagdfluger getting a base from which he can base Mikes - thus bringing another 50% of his fighter production to bear. So long as he is limited to just using Zeroes to fight over the landing beaches etc I can knock down enough planes that he will run out before I do. Once Mikes enter the fray I will not be able to attrit his force appropriately. So, I must stop him before he gets that first, important landing zone and, if he does land, I won't wait penny-packeted out in little defensive bunkers, I am creating a strong central reserve ( something on the order of 1,500 AV ) and will simply ram that down his throat once he lands.

With Java and the Phillipines still in play and it already being mid-January I can't see Jagdfluger landing until the beginning of March and if he waits until then I should have roughly 2,500 planes on hand, Level 9 forts and a central reserve of over 2,000 AV.

What about Australia I hear you ask? Well, I will fight for it a little but, really, if he wants it he can have it. I am quite prepared to fight a delaying action through Noumea, New Zealand and eastern Australia before evacuating out of Western Australia toward either India or CONUSA and rebuilding. In the long run so long as I hold onto CONUSA and India I will be able to pick the time and place of my counter-offensive and he can't be strong everywhere.

In reading the picture below the key point is that he has lost over 1600 planes in a manner which makes pilot casualties likely ( I have probably lost fewer pilots than him in total although more airframes for sure ). He began the game with about 700 trained pilot reserves and will have added 366 in the month. So, overall, in the first 2 months of war he had the potential to replace 1400 pilots. He is already over that number and in the past week, for the first time since the opening days, I have seen Ki-32s being pressed into service as bombers as his twin-engined bomber fleet is busy elsewhere. So, I am confident that when it comes time for the battle for India his reserves of carrier-capable planes and pilots ready to fly them will be significantly lower than he might wish.

Now that the situation has stabilised the first major reinforcement convoys will begin leaving CONUSA bound for India. The first convoy will concentrate on bringing USMC fighter squadrons ( so that I can get full usage from the 96 F4F4s I receive per month ), US dive-bomber units ( so I get full use of the A-26 and SBD-3s and my single Avenger squadron), a US Marine division and a US Parachute Bn to India. This should help increase the ability of my defence to absorb significant losses over time.

Well, isn't this interesting. It would appear that CVA Yamato is lurking around Australia/Caledonia. Unfortunately for Jagdfluger I've just finishe shipping 2 divisions of troops to Noumea but a Base Force is still eminently vulnerable.

The most important thing here though is that now I know Yamato is operating as a free agent in lesser theatres. I can, surely, use this to my advantage. In another unfortunate thing 76 level bombers which were in range of Yamato refused to fly *sigh*

Today Japan lost 29 planes to my 19 and unveiled the one CV TF I had completely lost contact with ( all of the others seem to be around Hawaii enforcing an iron blockade ). I think that things are looking pretty good for Java, the Phillipines and Hawaii to fall completely only by the end of February which really should mean that India will be safe from serious invasion.

In response to the imminent fall of the Phillipines I have begun flying out HQ elements from the two US HQs there ( the US Army Regiment has already been evacuated as have a number of key Phillipino units. )

Yakface, I use RHS 6.7 ( roughly ) as a basis. All the files and art are available for download from the ahistorical scenario database.

I've noted almost 200 Ki-32s being pressed into service on the front lines in DEI/Malaysia. With 200 Sallies in action over PH and the dive-bombers and Lillys in action over the Phillipines it looks to me like the Japanese bomber force is being stretched pretty thinly. Obviously though since they have suffered roughly 500 planes lost in the first month this should come as no surprise.

Damn, just short of the 2:1 I need to push them back. Jagdfluger used some screwy movement rules to get a regiment of troops "around" Manilla and in behind my troops holding at Clarke Field. It is totally within the rules of our game though --- which can pretty much be summed up as "fight hard, fight often and don't exploit a clearly broken rule but feel free to use anything else to your advantage."

Japanese aerial losses again outstrip Allied losses which has got to be putting one hell of a strain on his pilot pools. Below you can see the situation around Manilla. I have gathered a small counter-offensive force at Baguio with a view to pushing the Japanese Replacement Regiment out of Baguio and then seeing if I can isolate the 4 units which are currently besieging Manilla. This should force him to attack in the north more quickly than he would otherwise wish and might allow me to repel the first attack. When push comes to shove though my plan is just to withdraw into Manilla and wait out a siege. The siege will not be nearly as long as one might expect as I only have Level 1 forts in Manilla - why? Simple, I evacuated almost all the engineers to help with India [:D]... hence my forward defence far from Manilla.

I have 60 ships trapped in PH, including 5 BBs. Most BBs can only make 11 or 12 knots. Here's my question, if I leave them there they will definitely be sunk. However if I sortie them all and run for San Francisco at least a little might survive. I'm inclined to give them orders to sortie and take my chances. It is a 20 day journey to San Fran and I think that's just too much for my ships to survive in the face of concentrated strikes from KB but leaving the be is a definite recipe for their loss... So, what think you all?

If your BB's can go at Full Speed, that means 4 or 5 hexes per turn. I would wait until there is bad weather and sortie them in different directions. If you don't have a HR on TF size (in my PBEM we have to have 2 ships per TF due to the naval attack routine often ignoring single ships), then go separately. If possible place subs in likely hexes that KB may launch attacks from. You may get lucky. [:D]

You will need the floating heavy artillery later in the game. [;)]

ny59, No the BBs can make, at best, 12 knots ( so 2 hexes per 12 turns ). I think what I might just do is try to decimate his Ki-21 stocks with a major bombardment mission and only then try to run for it. I doubt it'll do much but at least I'll get a few licks in before running for it and losing those 60 ships [:D]... and, very importantly, 50 Ki-21s destroyed now will be 50 Ki-21s fewer he can throw at India when the time comes.

You do know you can also pick up forces from another base with those PBY's right?

So they don't have to be based in Manila.

String, aye but they have to go somewhere and all the bases they can base from to transport troops out of Manilla are within range of Japanese bombers so my strategy is just to put a few PBYs in a few different bases and just try to minimise the losses necessary to get the job done.

Well, another good day for the Allies. Japanese losses in the air are over double Allied losses and 3 Japanese DDs and a CL are added to the list of crippled ships at Lahaina ;). He certainly has enough CVs to keep going but he's going to be pretty short on light and medium surface units. Tomorrow I sortie my BBs etc. I am sortieing them for two reasons:

1. In no time at all Jagdfluger is going to start bombing my port facilities in PH and when he does all the ships there are going to be seriously damaged to no avail.
2. If they reach the enemy airfields I can get some serious bombardments in and kill a lot of Ki-21s.

If they don't reach the airfields then I will lose the entire fleet to no gain. Well, sometimes you don't have a choice about dying, your only choice is whether you are going to be of some use in the dying. This is one of those occasions --- or Sun Bin might have put it "In death ground, fight."

Gees, I manage a night intercept on an unescorted transport convoy and what happens? I don't get a single hit. Of note though, no escorts.... That's very interesting as Jagdfluger isn't the sort to send unescorted convoys around unless he doesn't have any other option. Interesting, he has obviously converted a Chutai of Me-264 Angels ( Japan's four-engined, long-range heavy bomber. It requires massive runways and eats supplies like you wouldn't believe BUT it also carries 48 x 100Kg bombs and that means that 4 of them do as much damage as an entire sentai of Lillys. The Me-264 is a real pilot-saver but expensive in many other ways.

Well on the day my ships sortie from port the enemy begin their port attacks. Looks like I timed it just right - not in terms of saving the ships as I think they are all going to be lost but in terms of actually managing to achieve something for the losses I suffer. In addition the sortieing of the ships is going to give cover to two operations I am running:
1. Shuttling in of 8,000 tons of supply on my fastest freighter.
2. Evacuation of USMC fighter squadrons from PH.

So, overall, about 20 ships went down today but about 40 are still running for it. I believe that between 4 and 8 will actually survive the run which is better than none. Plus I took down 39 naval pilots today and should be able to kill another 20 or so a day for the next two days which will cost him half a month to replace.

Well, that's that settled then.
