Download Map Maker 0.9x
RE: Download Map Maker 0.9x
Thanks guys that has given me a clue.
Rick, can I get you to try and replicate the problem again but this time instead of clearing the processing string type
"0,0,0,16"
This just basically tells MM to color reduce to 16 colors (but do no further processing). Then see if you can replicate the problem.
If you can't then try
"0,0,0,18" and then try again (and then repeat with 20,22,etc)
I suspect at some number (like 26 ?) then it may replicate the issue. In that case MM may not like to process 32 colors. I can fix that easily if I know that is the exact problem.
I think I can even remember where in the code where it is crapping out, but as I am at work right now I can't check directly. If you can do this little experiment for me and essentially confim my suspicion it will be greatly helpful.
Not like you haven't already done enough to help further the MM cause (everyone, Rick is doing the MM documentation and is doing a great job [&o])
Regards
S.

In my map directory, I get up to map_tmp26.png before that line
Yep I think that is because on your terrain map as shown in your screen shot you have 28 colors! So for you it seems to clap out at 27! Try removing a few colors and see it it goes away. I can fix this no probs and will do next build.
RE: Download Map Maker 0.9x
I should say that in reality you would never really want to work with that many colors (32) in any sort of realistic sense. It is just way too many. Practically you probably wouldn't use any more than about 12-14 max.
Each terrain color is meant to represent either a specific autogen area or texture area. Remember it is the job of the color mapper function at the bottom of the UI to map your terrain colors into legal PCK colors. Also the new object autocolor system would naturally add of lot of these AI colors as well (so you wouldn't need to include them in a template for example - eg you don't need obstruction red or ruins yellow or water blue or... a whole bunch of these colors can essentially go now).
Check out Ben's latest creation. In only uses 8 colors and is amazing!

Agreed!! Ben's 8 color is working just fine [:)] .... however, it's best to have MM capable of using the number of colors equal to the PcK terrain palette because someday someone will evently want to put all the terrain type's in.
Anyway, regarding the HM being flat ... yeah, it's definately a problem with v4 data not cooperating ... I went back to the eastern front, just southeast of kharkov, at a railroad crossing I worked on months ago. Viola!! Height data.
In the SS below it's showing an 8 color duplicate of the area. Note that I had to flatten the river and I couldn't use a water level because the river was higher than the northern part of the terrain so I used my water texture to detail the river. As you can see the water texture gives it more detail around the edges (albeit a blue texture and not a good river color) ... and, you can see that in some areas the shades cause by the trees/terrain made it color those areas the same as the river.
But, for the most part, it really created a nice photo image of the area with really good height smoothing .. Congrats Stridor!! MM is a really nice piece of work!
Rob
Off topic ... Note ... The area that srtm tiles gave a flat terrain is called " srtm_38_3 " .

Rob nice work
I have found and fixed the 32 colors bug. To be clear you can still have an AI map with all the colors, just that you couldn't have a terrain input map with that many (except of course now you can with the new build although why you would ever want to is beyond me!)
There was much work done to fix up rivers, water levels and heightmap level spectrum in the next build as well.
Thanks guys for finding all these bugs. Really starting to nail this thing down.

Rob judging by that photo and how the river is spread all over that whole area looks like an enormous flood basin/marsh. The prob with the SRTM data is that in such a case if the data is out by 0.5m it will put water where it shouldn't in the photo. The next build will fix a lot of these issues. You could also do this. Take the sculpt tool and raise up the flooded parts (which shouldn't be flooded).
The processing systems can only help, they can't read your mind and perfectly categorize the sat images. Sorry.
Thanks for your words of encouragement.

ran through the tests,
looks like it works on 0.0.0.24 but fails on 0.0.0,25.

Thanks Rick, with your help I have found and fixed the bug. Will get out 0.9z soon. Want to add a little mini surprise before I post it.

Oh yes ... we all know that maps that contain water require extra work! [:)] ... not a problem at all ... thanks for making it less of a PITA [;)].
But John ... lets prentend that we didn't know the map was actually a marsh/bog area. You can see that you are this > < close at creating a random map generator. It's so automated right now all I had to do was assign textures and the atuogen stuff ...
We all know, that given time, you can automate terrain assignments (even randomize it) and plop autogen stuff on it own.
Frankly, whose to know that my map was actually a river map ... with a random sead that river could have been a city with concrete terrain and hundreds of buildings autogen'd . If you can randomly select an area within the srtm zip you can slap any terrain map on top and call it good ... IMO. You can turn a real world city into a full blown forest ... whose to know?
Anyway, I know the random map will come later after you've ironed it all out.
Thanks again for your work!
Rob

I don't know. There is a *lot* of work required to get a really good random map system working *well*. Also like programing a good game AI it is not always clear "how to get there from here".
My time on MM (& PCK) will soon be really limited as I am moving into private practice shortly. That is why I am racing to tidy up the last loose ends before my free time becomes effectively zero. I was hoping I had time to implement at least a system whereby the MM could make a RBG template for the map during the build process so you could play RB on it without making a (human) template, but that appears unlikely now.

S

No private practice for you! Now we will need to squeeze your "mind grapes" for all the map juice we can distill.
What is the procedure for adding models to the MM (so I don't have to keep buggin' ya to do it for me)? I have a few more city type buildings in the pipeline that I'm finally finishing.

Hey Stridor, don't forget to update your resume with MapMaker! I'm sure that something like this would be noticed in the IT industry!

That map does look good.. but the elevations seem a little abrupt, is there a setting to smooth that out in the editor?

Bil,
The MM has a full HM editing (sculpting suite). You can locally smooth or globally smooth and by varianing amounts and degrees. You can also mask off areas to smooth or not smooth. In other words yes there are lots of smoothing options. The SRTM data is 90m res which is why it appears blocky. A couple of global smoothes would fix it nicely. Not sure why Rob didn't do that for this SS.
There is also extensive noise ops as well, so you can add HM "texture" back in if you want.

RE: Download Map Maker 0.9x
Kind of stupid question, but I don't think the textures I'm picking are being used by MM:
I'm using tiled_forest03.bmp as a brush base ground texture:
Yet I get this texture in the game.

Bil, hopefully I will have version 0.9z out by then (which fixes some water, heightmap and misc bug issues)
If you can read my tutorial on how the MM works. You can find this in the mods section (it is stickied). It is old now (doesn't cover any of the newer features), but still should serve as a good base.
