AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 02/17/42 – COMPRESSED AND ABRIDGED
Once again, I’m leaving out (most of) the boring bits. Here’s the summary - the sieges of Singapore, Soerabaja and Manila enter another day... sub actions continue, and Field Marshall Solli opens his attack on Honan. The Chinese advance on Nanchang continues with no detectable countermoves by the Animals.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Admiral Speedy is pleased with his S-boats in general, I think:
Sub attack at 38,60

AK Nasusan Maru, Torpedo hits 2, on fire, heavy damage
AK Sanko Maru
MSW Wa 19
Allied Ships
SS S-39 – fired 4 torps

Admiral Speedy is probably even more pleased with a fleet boat having a torpedo work!! Both this and the prior attack may have come from the same convoy east of Tarakan.
Sub attack at 37,60
Japanese Ships – 180 miles E of Tarakan
AK Nagisan Maru, Torpedo hits 1, heavy damage
MSW Wa 19
Allied Ships
SS Shark – fired 4 torps

The opening shots of the Honan attack... this is worrisome as it seems Field Marshall Mike has put the bulk of his free units into this thrust, and they outnumber the defenders. However, Honan has 5 forts (almost 6) and several of the defenders are 100% prepped, and an intact supply line. In addition, the main Chinese HQ is 100% prepped for Honan and within command range, and there is limited air support available (soon to be more). The forces that took Ichang a couple of days ago are resupplying and will move down the road, threatening the supply line to Solli’s troops, and a major offensive will hit Nanchang in a few days (I hope) which should give the Animals pause as there appear to be relatively few units defending the coastal cities should Nanchang fall.

Generalismo Bruce tried a knockout blow at Singapore with about every bomber in range, but it appears more than half of his bombers were shot up (or shot down!) I expect the toll to climb when more details become available.

An unpleasant surprise: while reviewing the dispositions of the Chinese, I discovered that China Command only has a range of 5 and thus despite that it is 100% prepped, it does no good. The mystery is: why was it being prepped for Honan at the beginning of the game if it can’t do any good? Unfortunately, China Command is a static unit and it can not move. This makes defense of the city much more problematic.

Meanwhile, the sieges at Singapore, Manila and Soerabaja continues, and a landing took place at Bankha in Sumatra. Admiral Speedy’s subs are picking up the pace again, and Truant torpedoes two ships, sinking one outright.

Part of this is due to supply, but that might account for a modest reduction, not 75% . Perhaps just due to a bad roll. RE: When Animals Attack - Threadwar 3x3: Humans Strike Back
Intel Update - 20 February 1942
Now is the winter of our discontent - and the Animals are doing their best to keep it that way...
i hadn't done an update for intel for a while now, so here is one from 20 February comparing it to the previous intel screen i had captured on 12 Jan 1942... i don't recall offhand if i posted that one or not, but anyway here is the data.
The Animals have boosted their score by over 2000 points in about 1.25 months, more than half of this due to destruction of cut off Allied units... this trend should continue until Soerabaja, Manila and Singapore fall (assuming that they do fall - although i am NOT sanguine about the long term Allied prospects for them holding out.)
However, there ARE some bright spots - the Allies are destroying more Animal aircraft than they are destroying Allied ones, and while we are sinking approximately the same number of ships, the ones the Animals are losing are more valuable. In a war of attrition favoring the Allies - this is good for us, and bad for them, especially this early in the war.
Also, it seems that Animal troop losses are running pretty high as well - i don't have a LOT of PBEM experience, but it seems to me 300+ Army losses is pretty high for Feb 1942. i hope we will be inflicting many more Army casualties on the Animals in the near future.

In addition, we are pinning down 1 division at Moulmein and 2 division equivalents in Honan... however, eventually the ones in the DEI, Singapore and Manilla are going to become free and horribly interesting things will start to happen...

RE: When Animals Attack - Threadwar 3x3: Humans Strike Back
It seems like you guys should take Nanchang pretty quickly, unless Mike is able to rush in some reinforcements.
What's the plan for Nanchang, once you take it? Are you just trying to draw off resources and reinforcements from Mike's march on Honan?
In case you can't tell, I'm fishing for CHS Chinese advice. [:D]

RE: When Animals Attack - Threadwar 3x3: Humans Strike Back
i'm HOPING to take Nanchang soon - Mike IS rushing reinforcements it seems (keeping careful track of his movements)... What happens if/when Nanchang falls depends a bit on where his units retreat to... i am pretty sure they will retreat to the North, in which case i will sweep to the East and cut up his supply lines... i MIGHT go into Shanghai if things go well - i don't expect that i could ever take it, but if i can get in there in strength, it will be the devil for him to get me out (since it is urban) and it will stop all his supplies from resources there.ORIGINAL: USS America

Bob, how well do you think your supplies will hold up in the region? Do you think you can sustain operations on this scale for very long?

So far, so good... the Burma road is still open and i've been flying in supplies as well. i've also made sure i haven't been building up my troops willy-nilly, but rather been building forts only (not airfields, ports). So, the supplies in this area are NOT overabundant, but i think they should suffice for now.

RE: When Animals Attack - Threadwar 3x3: Humans Strike Back
Well, now that Speedy v Fabertong has ended, I have arrived here. I noticed that HR were referred to as being located in BOB, but where exactly in the 163 pages of that thread are they? Or would it be possible to give a hint here of the more important ones.
BTW, what is Lt Miller doing nowadays?

RE: When Animals Attack - Threadwar 3x3: Humans Strike Back
The BOB thread is mainly a coordination tool - we spent many weeks discussing and voting on the house rules, and since then we've used it to coordinate the 3x3, which is many times more complicated than the usual 1 on 1 PBEM.
BOB has been particularly useful to straighten out REPLAY bugs (two of them now) - interestingly, we've been able to do this both times without having to resort to the POMPACK PATENTED PROCEDURE (which would be extremely taxing with 6 players). Both times the REPLAY/SYNC bug was resolved by Japan redownloading the turn, then rebooting and rerunning the turn.
As for Lt. Miller, i've been a bit stuck on him since he is on the REPULSE, and the REPULSE is not doing a whole lot these days... perhaps he needs to be transferred to a more active ship. [:D]
So far, my navies (and the Allied navies in general) have been mainly doing boring but necessary work: hauling supplies and troops, and there have been precious few naval battles.
i will recap THREADWAR this weekend i think - most of the action has been on land... although things are about to heat up considerably in the next few days. [8D]
EDIT: The houserules discussion started on page 1 - i think the final version is around page 16, but i'll check on this.
REEDIT: It is on page 12:

RE: When Animals Attack - Threadwar 3x3: Humans Strike Back
AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 02/28/42 – COMPRESSED AND ABRIDGED
The day after the fall of Manila and Soerabaja... now that two major distractions are out of the way, can Singapore be far behind? Where will the next blows fall? I am betting on Southern PI, New Caledonia/New Hebrides and Burma, but the Animals have many options... once again, today’s report shows only the more interesting parts, and I am leaving out the unsuccessful sub attacks, unsuccessful ASW attacks and the more or less routine bombings of various units... all in all, today was pretty uneventful.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Take THAT, Mr. Yamashiro!!
Sub attack at 23,61 – approximately 240 miles east of Batavia
Japanese Ships
BB Yamashiro, Torpedo hits 1
DD Kari
DD Harusame
Allied Ships
SS Truant a desultory depth charge attack did little more than rattle the sub...
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
An assault at Honan knocks down another fort level...
Ground combat at Honan
Japanese Deliberate attack
Attacking force 137873 troops, 563 guns, 68 vehicles, Assault Value = 2638 – 3rd Division, 40th Division, 6th Division, 13th Tank Regiment, 2nd Engineer Regiment, 15th Field Artillery Regiment, 1st Mortar Battalion, Hankow SNLF, 3rd Construction Battalion, 110th Division, 36th Division, 41st Division, 26th Division
Defending force 74401 troops, 210 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 2097
Japanese max assault: 2538 - adjusted assault: 1346
Allied max defense: 2023 - adjusted defense: 940
Japanese assault odds: 1 to 1 (fort level 4)
Japanese Assault reduces fortifications to 3
Japanese ground losses:
2049 casualties reported
Guns lost 36
Allied ground losses:
1999 casualties reported
Guns lost 48
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
There was also the usual bombardment attack at Singapore...
And below is the Intel Screen for 28 Feb 1942, showing the radical score shift with an almost 2000 point differential for destruction of the Philippine and Dutch Armies... this alone gives some weight to the “Sir Robin” Defense... btw, in my recent readings, I found that there was some historical “Sir Robin”-ism... apparently, the entire US Asiatic fleet was leaving Philippine waters by the evening of the first day of the war (shooting a hole in our house rule that it was “ahistorical” to form TFs the first day of the war... also, most of the merchant fleet was hot on the heals of the warships in getting out of dodge on day one:
