Herb:

Whats your date and point lead?

Do you feel that you HAVE to go for the Auto Vic now?
Sing to the tune of "Man on the Flying Trapeze"
..Oh! We fly o'er the treetops with inches to spare,
There's smoke in the cockpit and gray in my hair.
The tracers look fine as a strafin' we go.
But, brother, we're TOO God damn low...

going for it

Post by herbieh »

Its not so much the auto victory , its his CVs Ive got to kill, and quick now, if he thinks this is it, out he must come
date, 9/8/42, lead about 4300 i think, not enough.....

bad turn, the fast transports were still in port at daylight, efate LBA hit
1 Ca torped, 23 system damage
1apd sunk
CL isuzu badly hurt, as well as a dd
To cover them bushido spirit orders the cl isuzu and the dd to attack efate, they should draw attention so that the 2 CAs and rest get away with about a third regiment.
next try, smaller and faster ships.

not impressed at all.
reconning everywhere, and still sniping...

Post by herbieh »

the cl and dd sweep into efate, and are sunk by 17 dds and ca canberra, do get some small licks in
his LBA concentrated on them as hoped, so my evac ships got away, dinted but now safe
trying again soon
lba hits lunganville
pm convoy arrives safe, more cd there and supplies build
And his CVs are spotted at last, at rockingham[:'(]

operation octopus mk2

Post by herbieh »

with his cvs spotted I must admit to some doubts about this operation, do not want a midway....
Should I proceed, or try to force an issue....
operation octopus will be cancelled, troops to rabual as a reserve
but the fleet will sail into the coral sea, and try for a clash, as many ships as I can get.
Mushia and yamato sail south. still recon a sub will get at least one of them.
trying another smaller evac and resupply to lunganville this turn.

yep , Im a coward......[8|]

operation octopus mk2

Post by herbieh »

Well the troops are headed to rabual, a strategic reserve.
operation octopus Mk2, is now greatly modified, I have come to the sorrowful conclusion that as an offensive player I suck.
(based on the fact that lately even the AI is beating me in one game, and in another PBEM I had my midway moment -well done rich.

So.
Octopie is now a turtle.
Boring
But as someone detirmined to still be fighting mid 43, this is the way to go.

Costly

Post by herbieh »

Supplying lunganville is getting expensive, that turn 4 dds managed to sneak in and pick up a few more troops, the 4 APDs that followed weren't so lucky, intercepted by 8 pt boats
wasnt pretty[:(]
1 pt boat sunk, 1 apd sunk, and no supplies landed.
the 3, yes 3 crippled apds are told to ditch supplies at a hex 1hex north of lunganville, the planned retreat hex.
thats it for supply, evac runs for about 4 days, no fuel remaining.
Operation octopie will have to be built about lunganville, that is now obvious.
Auto victory is now a lost cause, so its the long hard slog to tokyo for wobbly, has he the staying power?
Fortunately he is a PBEM opponent willing to go the distance, rare indeed[&o][&o][&o]

Operation octopie Mk3

Post by herbieh »

3 dds get in and out of lunganville, bringing out more soldiers
The damaged apds get away too
Operation Octopie MK3 launched
Keeping it Simple stupid!
KB sails into middle of coral sea looking for trouble
BBs to go into lunganville, pick up troops, and also bombard efate to dust

Thats the plan
Fuel to allow this to happen arrives lunga day after this

Wobbly took back another hex in Aussie today, as my subs take away more troops.

Mk 3 now?

Hm, I've heard no plan survives contact with the enemy, but 2 major revisions?

At least you aren't doing software versioning.

"Operation Octopus, version 4.6.5.1 Alpha"

[:D]

And is it really Operation Octopus now? Or more like operation Tentacle? Jellyfish? Bass? Carp?

I know! Operation Guppy!

[:D]

Okay, I'll go away now. [:)]

Just love the sarcasm, yes you can go away now......
here I am trying to give an incite into my thinking and I get that.....(just because it shows I dont have a clue doesnt mean anything[:'(])

Well operation octopie is in motion, several small fast transport groups make their way towards nevea in preparation for the operation
5 BBs are passing through Shortlands, headed south as well,
Fuel is unloading at lunga for the operation

At the reef of GG lots of mines being laid( Lost a ML last night to a sub grrrrr)
and a veritable swarm of Barges are headed towards townsville, mixed in with 2 APs - my "invasion fleet"
several barges last night were sunk near Cairns, alerting wobbly forces, I want him to come out
And behind this wave of targets and contacts KB is moving, 3 hexes a turn, stealth mode, only 1 objective in mind, go to the very middle of the coral sea half way between brisbane and noumea, and wait ...............

Operation Octopie grinds on, the ships still moving south.
The BBs were spotted of Russell island, which I don't mind. 5 BBs in magnificent formation[:D]
2nd ML torpedoed by a sub near GG in 2 days.

Poo

Wobbly reckons it is all a bluff.....

Most important op is trying to get a tanker to Nevea

Its very hard to conduct fast transport operations when the troops have to row....[8|]

operation octopie continues

Post by herbieh »

Major fleet units, the BBs stop at lunga, and refuel
Between nevea, around nevea and near nevea are 3 fast transport groups, a convoy , and most vital of all, a tanker on its way
Once the tanker arrives, we can commence our runs south towards lunganville and efate

KB crawls south, its screen of barges and APs refuelling as we go just ahead of it, we are about level with Cairns now. can KB get to ambush position unsighted? . Im betting it can, then the fun will begin over near efate.
This turn I will recon everywhere, time to let wobbly know something is up, but where?

His LBA killed a few more aussie tourists that turn, and 1 poor barge, which Id prefer, as Im getting a good feel for his LBA strength now.

spotted

Post by herbieh »

My CVs are spotted , well a CV is spotted in the coral sea, hopefully wobbly will think it a false report.
tanker at nevea, Im refuelling lots of ships, and 3 BBs lurk on react to its north

24 B17s bomb lunganville
And I feel a rise in tension[:'(]

Operation octopie continues

Post by herbieh »

herbiesan CVs continue to creep south of Townsville , but way , way out.
Wobbly has sighted them, and by E mail considers them the threat. he also knows that Octopie must mean that other stuff is up.

The other stuff begins, at least 4 fast transport groups are ordered to lunganville, while 2 BB groups lurk on react to its North. The mission is simple, get the troops out.
In 4 days time 20th division will arrive on map, they will go in after this op.
Another major , and this is major , objective of operation octopie starts, the unloading of vast amounts of fuel and supplies at lunga and irau.

the longer I can keep wobbly on the back foot , the better.
Woodlark will soon get some base forces, continuing the wall building.

Currently all is going to plan
Lets see how he reacts.

My CVs will after about 4 days more of slow advance, sweep over to lunga, and set up shop.[:'(]

Pincer

Post by herbieh »

The great japanese pincer begins.
Cvs in the coral sea, well pinned by recon, while yamato has been spotted as well.
The 1st fast transport runs were sucessful!, lots of troops unloading at nevea now
3 days until 20th division arrives.
Most interesting a lot of wobbly CAs spotted between efate and noumea, not sure where they are going....

The only problem is that his CVs have disappeared....[:(]

Still, operation Octopie is going well.[:)]
can herbie bluff wobbly another month.

near miss

Post by herbieh »

The night begins with a nice bomb hit on a sub by emilies. Come WITP they will be my secret weapon!!!
TF 213 reacts to my CVs!..........and nothing happened[8|][8|][8|]
So we creep south one more day, everything has been spotted. If wobbly wants a fight, now or never!

Over near lunganville, more troops out, only need one more day and mission complete, then its skiddale.
Will probably even evac nevea next, and make irau the 1st real defence point.
With these "missions I continue to buy very valuable time

20th division on its way to shortland, that will be 3 full divisions in reserve, then 1 at lunga, 2 regiments at irau, a division at moresby, and regiments at buna, lea.
defence in depth, with counter attack capability.

So, one more day, just one, and then I go quiet again .
Up to you Wobbly!

driving wobbly crazy

Post by herbieh »

[:D][:D]Today a ML hit 2 mines, in its own field, and sank[:(]
Lunganville gets its daily raid, and more troops get away on the express services running, oh its all going so well!
Intercepted wobbly message....I still cant fathom the depths of your plan. The fact you are coming is obvious but you are doing very well at keeping target hidde....

Of course there is no target[:D][:D][:D][:D]
Some ships getting very high system damage though....

Next day
My CVs are spotted moving fast east, across the top of new caledonia, the invasion force shows APs ect. Keep guessing kiwi , keep guessing
Wobbly sent in 12 pt boats to intercept the express at lunganville, and ran into yammato and mushia, and then the survivors ran into 3 kongo class bbs
only 1 got away[:D]
Kirishima took a torp, 20 sytsem damage

Big ships and CVs begin to retire, only 1 more evac run needed I think.

That was operation octopie, as far as I am concerned , 100% successful.

System damge, up to the 20s on several capital ships is a real concern, so I must now retire to truk the CVs, even send some home.
Defence in depth set up.
Next stage, convince wobbly KB is as strong as ever.So CVL SHoho and co will have a lot of steaming yet.
If you havent guessed I have had a ball messing with wobblies mind....evil cackle....

Post by herbieh »

A real bummer, the last evac convoy of 3 dds is intercepted by a huge fleet of 2 CAs and a screen full of DDs
# dds sunk, for one of his, but I lost 1470 troops drowned.
Bummer
His LBA began to hit nevea as well, so began the retreat to irau there.
Not a good day

Next day, another APD sunk at lunganville as wobbly hangs about.
Im moving KB slowly over there, and the BBs are going to go to lunga, not sure yet, but I feel another decoy mission coming on[:'(]
got nocked of the motorcycle testerday, almost a very abrupt ending to this game[8|]

last throw of the dice

Post by herbieh »

Wobbly troops began to land at cooktown, a CA and DD hit mines, they will find the place empty[:'(]

LBA missed CS Nissin at nevea as I evac that place.
Not mant troops at lunganville left, but that also means will only need 1 supply run to get it healthy.
Thunderstorms
And my CVs were not spotted
So, big breathe, I have ordered a full CV strike on Efate, it has at least 2 BBs there, and many ships
Cap set at 50%
So, here goes nothing.....[8|]
