RE: Sept Intell Summary

Post by Mike Carroll »

These are ship losss that the US knows about. Helpless told me that there is an additional BC lost that is not showing up. There may be some transports and destroyers as well.

October Special Report

Post by Mike Carroll »

Dateline San Francisco:

This is a special report to review the current situation in the war against the barbaric Japanese. To date the US has lost in excess of 120 ships, including 8 Battleships at the second battle of Dutch Harbor. A battle that is looking more and more like a defeat of the US Navy. The Japanese reportedly lost 3 Battlehships and 2 Battlecruisers. The US lost 8 Battleships with a 9th in danger of sinking (has been fighting floatation for 10 days). Losses in destroyers have been extremely high and it is beginning to look like we will be fighting this out with Commerce Raiders and Qships.

Summary of War to date:

1. Japan invades and captures the Philippines and Guam. Asiatic fleet holds it's own for several months. However two battles, one near Tay-Tay and one near Taan results in the loss of the several cruisers and the heavy damage of several others. The Asiatic fleet is greatly reduced as a major threat but still capable of commerce raiding and maybe something more later.

2. The Chinese fleet had some initial success in attacking transports but was basically destroyed in the Yellow Sea. Only limited ships remain.

3. Japanese forces capture Wake Island and Guam with little problems. A US raid on Wake by battlecruisers results in the sinking of a cruiser and several destroyers. A carrier raid later is ineffective.

4. Japanese forces move on Baker Island and Canton Island. Baker Island falls but a US surface force at Canton forces the Japanese to withdraw. Their ground forces are not yet strong enough to take Canton. The attack on Palmyra is aborted. The Japanese capture Kiska Island in the Aleutians.

5. A Japanese raid on Midway causes considerable damage to ships unloading supplies. The US battlefeet sorties to Midway to cover the resupply and build-up of the base. Two Japanese carrier raids on the Battlefleet at Midway results in 5 torpedo hits on US Battleships. One US battleship (USS Oregon) is heavily damaged but makes port.

6. In simultaneous attacks the Japanese launch attacks on Amchikita Island, Dutch Harbor and Canton Island. A naval battle between Jap cruisers and 3 US pre-dreadnaughts at Amchikita Island is a draw. Two main Jap Battle forces attack at Dutch Harbor and Canton island. The result is the loss of 3 cruisers and 10 destroyers to the US. Canton Island falls, but Dutch Harbor is able to hold out as the Japanese unload a division and 2 independent brigades. The Jap transports are heavily damaged by the minefield (at least 10 mine hits)

7. The US battlefleet sorties from Pearl Harbor with the intention of attacking the Japanese fleet at Dutch Harbor. In the major battle the US loses 8 Battleships to 5 Jap Battleships and Battlecruisers. But the Jap fleet withdraws and the US is able to land major land reinforcements. The land battle is still stalemated.

8. The southern Jap Battlefleet recently raided Palmyra and destroyed 3 Destroyers.

Dateline Pearl Harbor:

A dramatic surface battle occured between the transport Ohioan and a Japanese submarine. The Ohioan returning from a supply mission to Midway was accosted by a Jap submarine. The captain refused to surrender and opened fire on the sub scoring several hits. The sub responded with cannon fire and put 4 torpedoes into the transport. Before leaving the area the sub machine-gunned the surviving crew. Seven crew members survived the sinking. The valiant captain was not among them.

Dateline Pearl Harbor:

The likelyhood of an attack at Palmyra grows more likely. Japanese battleships bombarded the island again and destroyed a Minesweeper and destroyer that did not receive the orders to steer clear of Palmyra. In addition seaplanes from the battleships flew several recon flights in an attempt to determine the size of the garrison on the Atoll.

Good news was received from the USS Colorado which appears to be gaining the upper hand in controlling it's flooding. The Battleship has been fighting a battle for its very existance for the past 2 weeks. But for the 3rd day in a row, the flooding has gone down. US Navy officials are hopeful that the ship will win this battle.

Dateline Pearl Harbor:

The southern Japanese Fleet continues to bombard Palmyra. Apparently they are trying to obliterate it from the face of the earth.

Reinforcements continue to land on Dutch Harbor. US forces are carefully planning an attack to force the large Japanese force to surrender. Unfortunately it will take some time to wear down the Japanese force which still looks to be well supplied. Additionally it is thought that Jap subs may be running supplies to their forces.

Dateline Dutch Harbor:

There are indications that US forces may soon attempt a major attack on the entrenched Japanese defenders. Subs indicate a large concentration of Japanese ships at Ogliuga Island. It is apparent that the Japanese are moving in force to reinforce this island as a forward defense base.

There are also quite a few indications that a large cruiser force may have left Japan recently for the Aleutian Islands.

Dateline Dutch Harbor:

The US Navy announced today that the USS Colorado was sunk by what appears to be some sort of explosive device delivered by a small boat. It is theorized that Japanese troops currently engaged with US forces dispatched a small boat on a suicide mission. For 3 weeks now the USS Colorado had been struggling to repair damage from the major battle at Dutch Harbor. This brings to 9 the number of US Battleships and Pre-Dreadnaughts lost during the battle. The biggest defeat in US Navy History.

I would assume that the Air Combat TF was attempting to avoid surface combat. So they were just as happy to run away.

This one came too close I would rather not face the Kii and boys with the Langley[:D]
