The before mentioned reinforcement of two divisions in China have arrived. Despite having 22.000 arm points in the pool both divisions arrived at 24/24 strenght! [8|][:(][:(][:(]

So the assumptions on the forum, that 10.000 arm points are enough to equip a whole division can´t be true... Would be good to know how many I really need to equip one, even though I couldn´t have get more at this point of the game... [:(]

70th Division alone needs 15,925 armament points and 15,925 manpower points available in the pool to fully equip.

Thanks for the info! How do I get the exact number of arm points needed?

So if both divisions arrvie on the same day (what a pity) noone will be fully equipped but both don´t use any arm points and both arrive at 24/24...

loooong time no bigger reinforcements, so the next divisions should arrive fully equipped. The two mentioned divisions will take a year to fill up at least...[:(]

looks like I have found the reason why none of the divisions was full equipped! The manpower was the limiting factor as only around 2000 are in the pool... [:(] and I was wrong in saying no major reinforcements will arrive soon. In 7 days there will arrive a big division in Korea, without manpower also only at a fourth of it´s full strength... [:(]

3000 troops on bombardment attack... two units (30.000 troops+) have left Homan to the West on the rail, where two IJA tank regiments are sitting now. 3 tank regiments will follow next turn. They will be most certainly be driven out of the hex (I have ordered 150 Sallies on ground attack). Looks like ALL non static LCUs in Homan are set on march and are ABLE to march out again, even though I have cut off their way. Again they can move, even though there is no valid supply path!! If they move then at least they should have to move North, but not West into the hex where my troops have cut the supply line!

It´s really hard to play a game when the rules you follow are ignored by some kind of flaws or bugs all the time! I will see if ALL LCUs can march out of Homan... would mean EVERYTHING related to ground movement, ZOC, supply lines is completely NOT working as designed...

A single ship TF! [8|] An AK is hit one hex east of Naga, carrying troops [X(][X(]! The number of LCUs was misleading as there are a dozen guerilla units also and some base forces. Nevertheless, the Chinese can field 5500+ assault points! [X(] I would guess this is never enough though, Wuhan is an urban hex and has level 9 forts and more than twice as many guns! [:D]

Here´s the feared attack by the two units West of Homan on my tank units. The air attacks were succesful as the 15th division had a very low assault value. This attack didn´t hurt us. At the moment there are not more LCUs that moved out of Homan. Most of my units South of Homan have marched 30 miles in open terrain so another 6 days until the majority will arrive. 9 Chinese units are spotted on the road two hexes South West of Sian, so probably they will arrive late. At the moment it looks good, though this can change within a days time!

Would be cool to completely surround those 42 LCUs in Homan and destroy them in half a year! Then the Chinese have suffered a REAL loss in troops and even though they return in Chungking at a third strength it will take a long time until they are completely rebuilt. We will see... [8D]

this time the escort at least tried to fight and shot down a P40 and a Mohawk, but it resulted also in 5 Zeroes destroyed... The AVG must have a kill/death ratio somewhere between 3:1 and 4:1... and this made my eyes laugh again! Forts are already at 2 and 1100 eng are building them up further! This means the Chinese have no chance to drive me out! . When I will bring my troops in position West of Homan then everything will look REALLY good...

At Homan the HQ in the lead is hit hard... it´s at 18/94 now as well as a dozen artillery units that are in a very bad condition... Don´t know why those units are stacked in the lead and why the ground combat is so "bad" designed that makes those "support units" get hit the most, if those are the units in real life that would not be standing at the front as the first soldiers to be killed... Sorry for the "" but it´s just a real silly design as it is...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
and it did get exciting again...

Ground combat at Wuhan

Allied Deliberate attack

Attacking force 192463 troops, 603 guns, 91 vehicles, Assault Value = 5543

Defending force 100220 troops, 1252 guns, 7 vehicles, Assault Value = 1973

Allied max assault: 5861 - adjusted assault: 2180

Japanese max defense: 2162 - adjusted defense: 12197 [X(][X(][X(][X(]

Allied assault odds: 0 to 1 (fort level 9)

Japanese ground losses:
144 casualties reported[X(][X(]
Guns lost 27

Allied ground losses:
10115 casualties reported[X(][X(][X(][X(][X(]
Guns lost 243
Vehicles lost 13

Oh my god... what a result... hmmmm.... urban hex and level 9 forts, high prep and a lot of supplies... nothing to achieve here for Helpless. The Allied lost around 100 points in ground losses this turn. There is no HQ and the first support unit in the LCU stack is at the 8th position! And therefore I suffer only the laughable 144 casualties (too low IMO). Would I have had three HQs here and the next 5 or 6 units "support units" also, then I would have lost around 3000 like I did in Homan where the inf divisions really look good but the HQs and arti units at the lead are nearly completely disabled - which means further attacks would cause heavy REAL losses when disablements go over 50%... Have lost the combat report for 4/9/42 but there didn´t happen anything special anyway!

CV Hiyo arrived today. Though she isn´t operational because her airgroups arrived understrenght and when filled up with rookies the exp. of Hiyo´s daitais is around 45... [:(]

[X(][X(][X(] unbelievable! On Andaman island there are 18 Dinah IIs flying naval search 100%, range 8 at 6000 ft. but they didn´t spot anything. Pretty bad performance as they didn´t spot them coming in, nor did they spot the BBs this turn going out again... second time Helpless came in with a bombardment TF in that region that wasn´t spotted. At Tavoy there´s an additional Emily unit and 100 Betties/Nells on 10% search...

this TF at Norfolk island wasn´t spotted by my search planes... though I placed a sub in the hex that triggered the attack... a pity only 18 Betties launch but again two of the precious DMS are hit. Wonder if Helpless is aware that those are not "throw aways" like Allied DDs as he won´t get that many of them... I bet he spotted my sub there and thought it´s placing mines. [:D]

Defending force 130010 troops, 1498 guns, 14 vehicles, Assault Value = 2485

Japanese ground losses:
32 casualties reported

Helpless learnt about NOT moving ALL his troops into the base (like at Homan) and has 4 units sitting outside the base covering his supply line... [:D] Hopefully he won´t try to surround my base. I´m not really worried about it because it´s urban, forts 9 and the Chinese don´t have an airforce able to destroy my supplies... If necessary I can move out 1000 assault points from Homan as the Chinese already became weaker due to the two disastrous attacks! [8D]

this is an afternoon strike already! Last turn "overcast" was reported on the forecast. In the morning Rangoon had a thunderstorm cloud... Why do I have all my PBEM games with "advanced weather effects"??? [8|][8|]. Advanced must mean... not working as the whole map is 90% thunderstorms all the time... an old story already[:'(]

Ordered were those two daitais on sweep and 81 Zeroes escort and 200 Sallies on airfield attack Imphal but the airfield strike was cancelled due to bad weather in the morning... [8|] don´t know why the sweep goes in then... Even if I achieved an acceptable result, the sweep without a following bombing strike is not doing me any good as I´m only losing precious pilots... the KB (consisting of various CVs, CVLs and even a CVE - total of 410 planes), a BB surface group, an ASW TF, tankers and a big transport TF have left Truk today heading for Noumea. A regiment of the division there will attack Norfolk island. The F4 recons there are a pain as they spot every TF of mine in the area and are doing recon over New Caledonia.

I think the Allied should already have received the CV Wasp?? If so, then we could probably face 4 US CVs again if they decide to fight (which I doubt when they spot KB). Perhaps also a British carrier so this would bring the planes on both side in a 1:1 ratio (max of around 450 planes anyway due to our house rule). Though we are in the better position I think as we field more fighters (due to the CVLs and the CVE which is also loaded with a fighter daitai) and a lot more torpedoe bombers. Not to forget the more than 100 Betties at Noumea that PERHAPS would launch a strike.

-- U.S. NAVY SHIPS --
USS Grampus (SS-207), 1941-1943
USS Grampus, a 2370-ton Tambor class submarine built at Groton, Connecticut, was commissioned in May 1941. She operated in the western Atlantic and Caribbean for the next several months and transferred to the Pacific in December 1941, a few weeks after the United States formally entered World War II. Grampus made her first war patrol, into the central Pacific, in February-April 1942. One large merchant ship was sunk on that patrol, which also included reconnaissance missions to Kwajalein and Wotje Atolls. Her next patrol took her into the Marshall and Caroline Islands, concluding in Australia, where she was based thereafter.

During the rest of 1942 and into January 1943, Grampus completed three more war patrols, which took her to the Philippines and into the Solomon Islands. She left Brisbane, Australia, in mid-February 1943 to begin her sixth patrol, also in the Solomons. Grampus did not return from this mission and was subsequently declared lost with all hands. It is possible that she was sunk by the Japanese destroyers Minegumo and Murasame [:D][:D][:D] in a battle fought in the Blackett Strait, near Kolombangara Island, on 5 March 1943, shortly before those enemy ships were sunk in a night action with U.S. cruisers and destroyers

In the Wuhan area there are now a couple of LCUs trying to surround the base. 40 are sitting in Wuhan while I think 5 or 6 are trying to spread out. This is not a good idea I think as half a dozen spread out won´t be enough to keep the base surrounded. Don´t understand why Helpless isn´t using at least 20 of the units sitting in Wuhan. The rest would easily be enough to hold the position in the hex as it´s urban and that works for the invader also... but it serves me good. One division will leave Ichang (north of Wuhan) and one big brigade leaves Wuhan to counter the attempt of surrounding Wuhan. 1000 assault points are moving on the rail from Nanchang (South of Wuhan) West to take out the three units coming from Changsha.

Very good news is the air reinforcement. During the next two weeks we receive 3 A6M2 and 2 A6M3 daitais. These daitais are needed desperately as my Zero daitais in Burma need three months of training at least.

big strike coming from Dacca. I waited for this attack to come and had 135 Zeroes on 70 % CAP... there were 36 in the air... [8|][8|][8|]70% would be 95 planes... while I understand that not all planes on CAP should be in the air, 36 out of 95 is a bit low... how the hell should I defend something if the planes don´t even launch. It´s hard enough as Japanese, why never planes launch for cap I don´t know... On the other side the MAGIC allied radar nearly doubles the abilities of Allied planes up to a range of 5 or 6 hexes... date is 15 April 1942...
When I put 350 Zeroes here on 90% Cap then I would have perhaps 70 intercetping the bombers...
I lose 22 planes on the ground at Rangoon, with 7 pilots lost (4 Zero pilots...[8|])

Now that was interesting also. High alt raid, Zeroes not able to intercept. Also no flak fire although a dozen of 105mm AA guns (ceiling 36.000) were at the base. Thought flak is a all or nothing thing? Not a single flak burst. The B-17s come in shoot down 5 Oscars today and lose the incredible number of 1 plane today... [8|][8|][8|] If I ever start my Australia adventure, then I won´t do that before I have 200 Tojos and Tonies available. I´m far behind my timetable anyway and it will take another 6 weeks to take Burma and Java. Then Manila, if I will ever be able to take it...

big strike coming from Dacca.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This is only opinion but from limited pbem experience it seemed like cap at Rangoon was less effective than lrcap from the city 2-hexes south (Moulmein?). At least it is until it's blown off the map.

Keep up the fight. [:)]

two Chinese divisions were forced to retreat... no wonder why Helpless and me too are completely frustrated with the ground combat system in this game (if it can be called system). 157 casualties and 2 guns...[8|][8|] Could achieve the same result with a bombardment... ground combat just sucks IMO...

Since this turn Guam is empty!! [X(] The several subs that have been spotted there for weeks have transported out the troops from Guam! Looks like the base will soon auto switch to my side. While I lose the training ground near Truk I also have avoided an invasion. The constant bombings have paid off also.

Looks like the same goes on in Port Moresby. The base has long been closed and there were always three units spotted. Now there´s only one unit left (2000 spotted troops). C-47 losses are reported so I bet the troops are airlifted out! Wonder how this is possible when the airfield is at 100%, as well as the base and the port? [&:] Airtransport probably possible even if there´s no operational airfield? Only an assumption but it looks like exactly this is happening. Oversight? Glitch? Flaw? How should I call it? [:D]

using some float planes to disrupt Allied shipping South of the Fidjis. No biggy but the 3 60 kg bombs cause a heavy damage on AK Panaman. Won´t sink though... The ships will return to Noumea, perhaps Allied CVs will go looking for them. Would be cool as in a week my carriers arrive at Noumea.

[:D] How bad must have those IJN planes been when they crash the moment they take off? Hudsons and B-17 fly 11 hexes, are making a bombing run facing light AA fire and return 11 hexes for no op loss.

This represents the 8 units at Cagayan! Assault value isn´t as high as I had expected it. Though it´s a wooden hex and probably a lot of forts already (hopefully not higher than 5 or 6). While we have a 3:1 ratio of assault points I will wait for the additional brigade to join the fight, it should arrive within the next couple of days. I´m so far behind my timetable that it doesn´t matter anyway if I take that base next week or in two weeks. Then the 1300 assault points will be brought to Java to join the troops there. Hopefully nearly 3000 assault points will then be enough to force the Dutch in Soerabaja to surrender!

Here´s an overview of my damaged warships! When you are doing so many turns a day like Helpless and I are doing then it doesn´t take half a year in real life to repair 40 sys damage on a BB! Though it still takes more than half a year in game time! [:D]

I have expanded all major repair shipyards which has soon proved to be useless or better say it has been a fault. No sense in having more than 100 repair shipyard at a base as the repair points are only used perhaps once in 10 days. So my bases have repair points up to 600 which are decreased every 10 days by around 110. A starting value of 90 is easily enough to have always as many stored as you need and I don´t have more than one or two capital ships at one repair yard anyway.

Did cost me A LOT of supplies for no return... Helpless will just have bigger targets when he will bomb the home islands to dust in a couple of years!

I lose 22 planes on the ground at Rangoon, with 7 pilots lost (4 Zero pilots...[8|])
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This is only opinion but from limited pbem experience it seemed like cap at Rangoon was less effective than lrcap from the city 2-hexes south (Moulmein?). At least it is until it's blown off the map.

Keep up the fight. [:)]

Don´t know what went wrong (hopefully Cap won´t be SO LOW again at Rangoon). A bad die roll?
[8|] I have 81 Zeroes at Kendari set to 90% CAP and there are usually 50+ in the air when a recon comes for visit! Still only 60% but far better than the lousy 36 planes like at Rangoon. It´s a pity when you set a very high % on Cap, your planes don´t fly and then the planes which should defend the base are destroyed on the ground (including the pilots which is far worse).

As said before, I know that not all planes should be in the air (in fact there are always too many planes in the air - for both sides) but when I see 100% of the Allied fighters scramble because of early WWII radar and only 30% of Japanese planes scramble because of those sound detectors then I think the ratio is not really good!

hopefully I can take Homan before Manila! [:D] Wonder why Helpless continues the siege of Wuhan in the South instead of sending those 45 LCUs first towards Chungking and on the road further to Sian. I don´t think I could stop those 5000 assault points trying to break the cettle of Homan. Serves me good! In fact the attack on Wuhan was the worst Helpless could do! [8D]

Soerabaja will fall! And it will fall before Manila. When Mindanao is cleared it will take two weeks to get my troops to Soerabaja for the next assault!

Intel reported 5 Allied op losses today. 2 are Dakotas and 1 is a Beaufort V (a lot of Beauforts lost due to ops in the last days. Don´t know if he transferres them or is training them using supply runs). Those Beauforts scare me as there will be hundreds of them already when I decide to go for Australia. B-17s and Beaufort Vs will be the biggest threat to an invasion.

here comes the hammer! This time they came in at a height the Zeroes could reach and ALL kills during the replay went to the cannon armed Zeroes. The Oscars damaged A LOT bombers but were also a good target for the gunners. Bomber morale has been very high again as only 2x3 bombers were turned back. They manage to hit two of the three ships in port. Not bad for bombing at 30.000 feet. [X(][X(] Unfortunately they hit a precious AD... [:(] When I think about switching from Oscars to Tojos or Tonies (both have gun value of 12 in Brian´s mod) then in this case at least twice the number of bombers would have been shot down. Then unescorted raids will be a little more costly.

It´s a pity Helpless isn´t one of the Allied players who thinks Port Moresby is worth defending... [8|] Actually I hoped to see A LOT of reinforcements...

First day when the Allied assault value decreased. Already low on supply? Can´t be so fast, can it? 260.000 troops should eat a lot of supplies and they deliberate attacked twice after being cut off. But the Chinese are still bombarding so it doesn´t seem they are low on supply...

VERY INTENSE ROUND!

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 04/22/42

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Allied forces surprised by a new land based Zero model! The A6M3 proved to be a deadly weapon in the hands of experienced pilots! First fighter daitai equipped with the A6M3 claims 12 kills this turn for no own loss! BANZAI! [&o]

Day Air attack on Imphal , at 33,26

Japanese aircraft
A6M2 Zero x 108
A6M3 Zero x 27
Ki-21 Sally x 138
Ki-46-II Dinah x 5

Allied aircraft
Buffalo I x 6
Kittyhawk IA x 12
P-40E-1-CU Warhawk x 8
Hurricane IIb x 25

Japanese aircraft losses
A6M2 Zero: 10 destroyed
Ki-21 Sally: 5 damaged

Allied aircraft losses
Buffalo I: 5 destroyed
Kittyhawk IA: 11 destroyed
P-40E-1-CU Warhawk: 8 destroyed
Hurricane IIb: 24 destroyed

Allied ground losses:
104 casualties reported

Airbase hits 8
Airbase supply hits 1
Runway hits 25

Aircraft Attacking:
24 x Ki-21 Sally bombing at 11000 feet
9 x Ki-21 Sally bombing at 11000 feet

While this result overall looks good it´s still not satisfying for me as several things didn´t work as planned (that´s war I think... [;)]). First, I set 3 daitais of Zeroes on sweep, but they joint the strike on the airfield and acted as escorts. I thought sweeps go in first always (as should surface TF go in before a bombardment TF). [&:][&:][&:]

Then just look at the few hits on the airfield![X(] 138 Sallies achieve only 25 hits on the airfield when bombing at 11.000 ft (light AA fire, the fighters didn´t attack the bombers). The B-17 last turn hit two out of three small ships from 30.000 ft... [:D] Unfortunately the airfield was empty as the Allied bombers flew an attack. But this turn also proves that the Allied are getting nearly ALL fighters in the air. 2 were destroyed on the ground today. While the Japanese CAP always has 30-50% of the planes grounded, that get torched by the bombers, perhaps this turn 90%+ of the remaining Allied fighters scrambled.[8|] So in fact if there are only fighters at an airfield it´s better to send in only a sweep because the bombers will find the airfield empty anyway when all the Cap fighters scramble...

But as said, it´s an overall GOOD attack. Outnumbering the defenders surely helped. One Zero daitai was hit hard and is not really operational anymore... The Hurricanes will soon run out of replacements... Surprisingly the Kittihawks are performing very bad!! [X(][X(] I thought those will be a problem. Good when I kill Australian Kitties in India, so the squadrons in Australia won´t have that many planes if I decide to attack...
