Helpless you are wrong here! [:D]









As an opponent has recently quit on me I now have time to do an AAR of this campaign as I feel this will probably going for more then a couple of months and Helpless has been a reliable opponent that sent turn after turn! [:D]

We´re using BigB´s 1.3 with stock map (while AB map and others are excellent work I´m just too used to the stock map and therefore I wanted to go with stock) and after already having a game under BigB´s 1.2 I can say I really like that mod! Thanks Brian for all the hard work! [&o]

This is a Jpn AAR only but we will have another AAR where we will post our thoughts on a monthly basis or after major happenings.

We just entered February 42 so I will start my AAR in late Jannuary with a summary of what happened before.

Helpless mostly plays CHS so he didn´t feel very comfortable the first two weeks but so far he put up a very good fight!

Let´s see who gets his head chopped...

Game settings:

1 day turns

house rules:

1. max. aircraft on airfield max. 50*airfield size (+about 10%) eg size 4 = max around 220 planes (around means perhaps 223 but not 238!! )

2. max. aircraft in sea hex = "around 450" (= 5 Essex carriers or the equivalent size 9 airfield). I know it´s no problem to stack more than 5 carriers in a hex that is 3600 square miles big, this rule is not because realism it´s because of the game engine. And this rule has worked better for me than a set max percentage of CAP. You still can place 1000s of planes around an island but it reduces the effects of the CAP shields for both sides. When you can place max 500 planes on the biggest airfield on the board why shoudl you place 1500 in a sea hex?

3. Japanese are not allowed to do strategic bombing in China! Far too easy to destroy all the ressources, HI and OIL. Japanese may bomb everything else of Allied territory.

4. Allied are not allowed to do strategic bombing of JAPANESE OCCUPIED ALLIED territory. This should prevent the Allied player to do suicide attacks e.g. with carriers to destroy some oil facilities (which I´ve seen enough) and for the reasons mentioned under 3. And I don´t think it would have been possible (politically) to burn down all those Japanese held Allied cities like Singapore or others. Allied may bomb everything in Japan, Korea, eastern China, Thailand = everything Japan held at 1941/12/7. If you want to starve Japan, take the bases or sink the ships!

5. no major air or land offensives conducted by the Allied out of China until 6/44. I´ve tested Brians changes of the Chinese theatre twice against a friend of mine and with the dozens of LCUs more and a LOT of supplies I was both time able to defeat the Japanese Army, driving once to Shanghai and the other time through the whole NE China. While it´s good that China is no more a walkthrough for the Japanese neither should it be for the Chinese (perhaps Brian should have made more LCUs static). No problem to retake lost territory or limited air offensives (limited means not the whole British airforce and 3 US 4E bomber squadrons in China ).

6. B29 aren´t allowed on naval attack, other 4E bombers min alt. for naval attack 10.000

7. B29 only on level 6 or 7+ airfields, this should limit them to places that were big enough in real life.

8. ASW TF max 6 ships

9. PT boats max 6 at a base (1x6 PT TF or 2x3 PT TF. Not 6 TFs with single PTs!)

10. First turn: no overly abusing of the Japanese first turn warp movement (means no landings thousands of miles far from the next friendly base e.g. New Zealand, Pearl, South East Pacific...) Allied may not form new TFs at Manila, Pearl or Singapore).

My initial landings were made at Mersing which soon proved to be a not so good tactic. I was in perfectly range of Singapore´s bombers that damaged a lot of my ships (they magically 95% of the time went after transports instead of the many warships around - once or twice they attacked my surface TFs and promptly damaged a CA with two 500 lb bombs, the CA made it to port and is now in the repair yard).

The worst thing was the situation I faced in the air. I had an airstrike on Sings airfield on the first turn but then for over a week.... NOTHING. I took Mersing on the third day IIRC and had 200 - 300 bombers in the area (Mersing, Saigon, Songhkla) but nothing happened. Either due to weather or unknown reasons the bombers didn´t launch. The weather was the factor that made me laugh the most. Saigon, Bangkok, the whole Malayan peninsula clouded..... BUT SINGAPORE HAD WONDERFULL WEATHER... and the Allied bombers launched day after day after day.... I think I had around 4 or 5 attacks on Singapore in the first three weeks despite having my bombers on airfield attack all the time.

The landing at Mersing wasn´t really succesful because Helpless immediately retreated all possible troops to Singapore. Only those troops that started out in Khota Baru were cut off and are causing me headache now behind my lines... [8|]

To top the situation there: While my bombers refused to fly, I put my Nells and Betties on nav attack / airfield attack (Sing). Helpless showed up with Force Z after a couple of days to disrupt my follow on landings that were covered by two BBs of mine. A British CL was sunk and a Japanese DD with BBs damaged on both sides. Helpless´ BB with a small escort ended up two hexes south of Singapore and I already saw it torped by my Betties. IT WAS NOT LIKE THIS! Instead of going after the damaged BB this turn my torpedoe bombers decided to launch against Singapores airfield. LESSON LEARNT: never trust the game... don´t assign nav attack / airfield attack!![8|]

Kuching was invaded on turn one, base taken on the third day.

landing on the first day at Appari, Helpless retreated all his troops to the Battaan, Clark field, Manila triangle with most of his troops sitting at Clark and Manila, Battaan only has it´s BF left I think.

Jolo was invaded on the first turn and torpedoe bombers were soon stationed there that didn´t hit much. Boise and the CA in the area escaped without doing anything. I caught some AS and an AR and some cargoes.

Legaspi and Naga were taken in the third week with minor forces to occupy the ressource centers there.

Lingayen airfield was soon built up to level 4 and since then Clark and Manila have been bombed by 150+ bombers on a daily basis. Supply levels should be in a critical state by now. Attacks will go in when Singapore falls and reinforcements from there will arrive.

No landings at Java so far, Kendari was taken early, Balikpapan in mid Jannuary with Miri. Brunei and Tarakan will follow soon. Java will be attacked after the fall of Singapore. Koepang on Timor was also taken but is bombed by 20 B17 and 40 Hudsons round the clock out of Darwin, so the base is closed (only some float planes on nav search there).

Lae was captured under LBA attacks from PM, lots or cargoes damaged. Built up to level 4 and then PM was closed soon. Only one attempt of Helpless to bring some supplies but the two small AKs were sunk. No reinforcements so far. Rabaul was taken with a brigade after two heavy BB bombardments. I thought the troops would surrender because I had taken the two bases to the west before Rabaul, but they retreated, the game telling me they had a supply line to the base on the west edge of the island. The Solomons were mopped up with no opposition, Lunga was soon built up to a lvl 4 airbase and has long range torpedoe bombers and Zeroes now.

Not much happened in China, mostly preparing and mopping up those annoying guerrilla brigades in Brian´s mod. Pilot training against the base in the south next to Foochow.

I don´t know if I ever will go on the offensive as in two tests against a friend of mine I was able (as the Alied) to drive through to Shanghai and once through the whole North of China with the Japanese not having much of a chance. So at the moment my troops are preparing and maxing out their TOE and forts are built everywhere.

almost forgot to mention my first turn attack! [8|] Per house rule one port attack was allowed. I decided to go the conservative way and attacked Pearl which soon showed it wasn´t the best idea - once again! [:D]

The first attack went off and to my surprise: NO TORPEDOES USED!!!!

Several BBs were hit but none in danger of sinking, so I also didn´t hit the 1% chance of a mag explosion. My Vals went after the airfield, the Zeroes were on sweep and escort doing both well.

Losses to flak were light so I decided to go for another round the next day. Unfortunately I had the same problem like at the other side of the map... THE WEATHER! My carriers were clouded on the 8th. They were also clouded on the 9th ... while I was moving my carriers round the Hawaian islands the weather stayed... well... clouded.

Already angry and ready to retreat I got in another strike this time having a couple of torp hits but again, nothing that could bring any BB in real danger. The high dud rate (30%) of Type 18 torps in this mod was another problem I faced. The next day I wanted to do a third round (after over a week IIRC) and had my planes on nav/port/airfield attack when a nav attack popped up in the morning.

I´m pretty sure Helpless tried to engage me at night with a surface TF. While bold it´s a nearly impossible attempt to first guess where my CV TF would be (I moved it every turn so I wonder why he even tried it) and secondly he must know that KB is heavily escorted. Not to think about the fact that the Japanese rule the night battles so early on.

So BB Tennesse was the main target of the airstrikes and was of course sunk by the first wave.

One thing I should mention is the sub war that´s going on. While my subs are mostly useless due to missing targets so far (the times they had targets it was mostly an ASW TF which promptly sank or heavily damaged my subs) Helpless´ subs are very dangerous. So an attack on Singapore to take out Force Z or Manila to go for all those subs would perhaps have been the better choice if you get such a poor PH attack. If Helpless would´nt have tried to engage me with his surface TF I wouldn´t have sunk a single BB.

To my biggest surprise, the MK14 torps are working perfectly good! [X(][X(] Never seen so many MK14 exploding so the dice rolls are on Helpless´ side me thinks. I don´t know (think) that Brian changed something with the dud rates.

Everytime I meet 4E bombers with Zeroes the results in A2A are 1:1 with normaly more Zeroes damaged then bombers. Added to this the losses on the ground then the bombers are leading at least 2:1.

This TF was spotted last turn in the morning when it positioned for the night bombardment run. While no attack was flown (150+ bombers and 81 escorts) both in the morning and afternoon I thought Helpless would retreat because he was sighted - and lucky not to get attacked. He didn´t and had a good result. Accepting that I now thought of sinking those terrorists with my Nells, Betties and Sallies out of Tavoy at a range of 6!!! Morning the TF was spotted - clear weather - no attack..... [8|] afternoon - TF spotted - thunderstorsm - no attack ...[:@]

very interesting again that Helpless´ bombers aren´t going after my CV or surface TF but after my cargoes (just like in the beginning around Singapore). I bet my bombers will kill themselves 99% of the time against the CVs later on instead of attacking easy cargoe TF targets [8|]

Now this one is one of the highlights so far in this game. My two subs West of New Caledonia were spotted by US floatplanes so I knew something was coming from the West while KB was off the East of the Island. In a full speed move they raced West. The cargoes and warships still at Koumac left not to come in danger of any damage as I thought they would be the target. Guessed right, a big mixed US Australian cruiser TF was spotted three hexes south west of KB:

while it IMO was an overall good attack for me one thing was really disturbing: the hit and dud rate of my aerial launched torps. The first two waves only scored 6!!!! torp hits (several were duds). 90 high experienced Kates scored 6 hits... [X(] Wouldn´t there have been the third wave in the afternoon on the then mostly by Vals damaged cruisers it would not be a satisfying result at all for me!

CA Pensacola was confirmed sunk! I expect more cruisers to be sunk already and am now trying to engage them with my surface TF (two BBs and escorts) as well as subs and of course KB to kill of more ships.

USS Pensacola (CA-24, originally CL-24), 1930-1948
USS Pensacola, name ship of a class of two 9100-ton light cruisers, was built by the New York Navy Yard. Commissioned in February 1930, she made a shakedown cruise to Peru and Chile then began regular operations in the western Atlantic, Caribbean and Pacific. In July 1931, her classification was changed to heavy cruiser and her hull number became CA-24. Pensacola shifted home port from Norfolk, Virginia, to San Diego, California, in January 1935 and thereafter mainly served in the Pacific.

When the Pacific War began on 7 December 1941 with Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor, Pensacola was at sea escorting a convoy that was subsequently diverted to Australia. Following patrols in the vicinity of Samoa, the cruiser screened the carriers Lexington and Yorktown during their operations in the southern Pacific from February into April 1942. In the early June Battle of Midway Pensacola escorted both USS Enterprise and USS Yorktown. From August to December 1942, she operated in support of the Guadalcanal campaign, mainly serving with aircraft carriers, and was present during the Battle of the Santa Cruz Islands in late October and the Naval Battle of Guadalcanal in mid-November. At the end of November, Pensacola was badly damaged by a torpedo in the Battle of Tassafaronga, with the loss of over 120 of her crewmen.

Pensacola was under repair until well into 1943, but returned to service in time to participate in the Tarawa invasion in November. In 1944 she took part in the conquest of the Marshall Islands and operated with carrier striking forces during raids in the central Pacific. From May into August, she patrolled in the north Pacific and bombarded Japanese positions in the Kurile Islands. Moving south, Pensacola shelled Wake Island in September and Marcus in early October, then joined the Third Fleet's carrier forces to participate in attacks on Formosa and in the Battle of Leyte Gulf.

During the rest of the year and into 1945, Pensacola regularly conducted bombardments in the Bonin and Volcano Islands. While off Iwo Jima on 17 February 1945, she was hit several times by Japanese coastal guns, but was soon able to resume shelling the island. She provided more gunfire support during the campaign to seize Okinawa in March and April. When the fighting ended in mid-August, she was serving in the North Pacific. Pensacola's final months of active service were spent supporting the occupation of northern Japan and transporting Pacific War veterans home as part of Operation "Magic Carpet". In 1946 the now-elderly cruiser was assigned to target duty in connection with the atomic bomb tests at Bikini Atoll. Badly damaged by the two explosions on 1 July and 25 July, she was formally decommissioned in August. More than two years later, on 10 November 1948, USS Pensacola was sunk as a target in fleet exercises off the coast of Washington State.
