The Arena?

Combat Report
Central Pacific
CV Trap

CRAP! My ambush/trap works FLAWLESSLY. The Americans sortie out of PH hoping to catch the Johnston Isle Invasion Force. The TF appears to contain two CVs.

Morning Phase
Bad weather--apparently--covers the Americans in the morning so a strike is launched at the Pensacola. A group of 43 Zero and 25 Vals smother the CA and DD as detailed in the previous Post.

Afternoon Phase
Bad weather closes down EVERYTHING! Nothing flies. Figures...

Planning
CV Rhujo is coming up from refueling and replenishing in the Marshalls. Order her to FULL SPEED to rendezvous with CARDIV1. If there are truly two American CVs then I will hazard a battle. My aircraft strength is 143 Zero, 62 Val, and 58 Kates. These numbers are strong enough to counter a pair of Americans. Three of my CVs still have Torps so we have a punch available.

Nice thing also computes to being fairly close to bases if I take damage. Palmyra isn't too far away. Have all sorts of Support Ships coming into the area with 2 AR, 3 AS, 3 AKE, and some AG so some of that will help with any damage taken as well.

If the Americans stick around-----WE SHALL FIGHT! Sharpen your knives fellas!

I launched that strike at Pensacola...so YES! Though it was just the 43 Zeros and 25 Vals. He might think it is a 2 vs. 2 fight....

He may know carriers are about, but does he have a DL on your flat tops? You may still be invisible.......it is quite possible he is clueless to your location, have you done a mouse over on your CVTF?

Spotted. I find the DL one of the Devs more mystic creations. You are on their map. I didn't realize that launching a strike gives you an auto 2DL. I just reread it. I always thought it was necessary for a spot by ac etc. CW etc. to be placed on the enemy map. I doubt he has any more info, #, composition, etc.. My mistake sir.

ps I also forgot the DL will go to 0 at the beginning of every day-night phase with the proviso the enemy can anticipate it's future position.

Just got back from watching 47 Ronin. Have to admit I enjoyed the story.

Jim wrote that intends to give battle so it is obvious--if this is not bluster--that action is to be joined. Here is what he said:

replay not surprising - I had my doubts about P'cola making it back alive...

Are you REALLY going to bring your CV's that close to my Death Star? Winner take all in round one... Batters UP!!!

Death Star? In January 1942? Don't know if I should laugh or be terrified... Interesting. OK. I will run the turn once the house goes to bed and we'll see what happens.

Will Post as soon as I get it in the books.

I watch 47 Ronin in Monday. Story was nice. Damn it is one of the greatest Samurai stories in history. But i would be far from calling that move great. I will say it is OK, properly made movie. I spend nice time with it but it is not movie i will see again.

I am probably more critic because i saw "Chushingura" and "Ako-Jo danzetsu" that are far far better from Keanu version

"One touch on an Armored Sleeve!"

Post by John 3rd »

Combat Report
January 8, 1942

It has been a near sleepless night for Rr-Adm Kaku of CARDIV1. The evening before he committed his motley assortment of carriers to potential battle. Throughout the night he second-guessed his decision. SHOULD he commit CVs Akagi and Kaga who were down to the last of their ordinance? COULD he depend on the wallowing CVE's Hosho and Taiyo. Not exactly the Front-line of Japan's carrier aviation. Little CVL Zuiho had an experienced group of pilots, however, he longed for the large decks of Shokaku or Zuikaku. His major hope rested on the enhanced fighter complement on board his carriers and the iron determination of his pilots. Still...a sleepless night...

0410 CV Ryujo finishes a high speed run that brings into the Task Force just prior to dawn. Add another 42 planes (24 Zero and 18 Kate) to the strength of the carrier air groups.

0425--0435 Search aircraft begin taking off from the Chitose, BCs Hiei & Kirishima, as well as CAs Tone and Chikuma. All floatplanes are set for an arc of 110* from 330-080. Everything the Japanese have for Strike Aircraft begins to be arrayed on the decks of the carriers.

0520-0548 Despite heavy storm clouds, contact is made with a variety of American TF. DMS are spotted at Johnston, a pair of CLs just NE of the atoll, still another TF about 125 miles NNE of Johnston, and, finally, the PRIZE. Tone Scout-3 spots the USS Enterprise with at least 4 CA, and DDs steaming west.

0600-0617 Kaku wastes no time. All six carriers turn into the wind and the TF heads directly towards the enemy. Are there other carriers present? No one knows, There is one CERTAIN target and the Rr-Adm launches 67 Zero, 37 Val, and 44 Kate to destroy it.

CAP begins to lift off the decks immediately after the strike leaves the Task Force. Within minutes the CARDIV1's CAP begins to encounter and shot down SBDs searching for their ships. Two get off contact reports before being shot down.

0712 CDR Hamano commands the Japanese strike. He looks to the elite Daitai of Akagi Vals he oversees. The wakes of the American Task Force are spotted and Hamano spends several minutes searching for additional carriers. There are none. He orders the entire strike to concentrate on Enterprise 14,000 Ft underneath him.

0717-0738 The Japanese strike sweeps aside 18 of the American Wildcats with contemptible ease. The Sea Eagles protect the incoming bombers flawlessly. Not a single Val or Kate is shot down by enemy fighters.

The tone of the fight is immediately set when the first group of 4 Vals to drop their bombs at Enterprise hits her twice. A classic Hammer-and-Anvil attack occurs with the Kates simultaneously. Enterprise's speed begins to fall as a 3rd and then 4th bomb hits her. This substantially helps the 18 Kate carrying torpedoes. Two fish slam into the burning carriers side and she goes dead in the water.

Hamano has held back Akagi's Vals to this point and now he orders them to hit other enemy ships. Very quickly CA Chester takes pair of bombs as well as a Torp that missed Enterprise, CAs Northampton and Salt Lake City take hits as well. A fast moving DD (Ellet) gets smacked by a bomb as well.

Having lost only a single Zero, Val, and Kate, the Japanese planes head for home.

Many pilots did notice that Enterprise's decks were clear of all attack aircraft. Her strike must have already been launched.

0758-0819 Having been adding to the CARDIV1's CAP all morning nearly 70 Zeros are staged at altitudes of 13,000---23,000 Ft. The American strike comes in as 16 F4Fs, 13 SBD, and 8 TBD. It is swarmed over by the Zeros. Despite staggering losses, 6 SBD and 2 TBD manage to make their drops on Japanese targets. CVE Taiyo dodges several bombs while BB's Hiei and Kirishima receive all of the attention from the remaining aircraft. For their great bravery, the Americans manage a solitary hit on BC Hiei. No real damage. For their temerity, the Zeros wait until the surviving Americans get through the AA and pounce back upon them. NONE survive the attack.

Amid worsening weather, CDR Hamano's planes return to their carriers.

0848-0919 All aircraft manage to land as it begins to rain.

While what little ordinance left is placed onto strike planes, the full force of the storm front hits the Japanese Fleet. It quickly becomes apparent that this is the end of the first ever CV vs. CV clash in history.

Decisions:
1. During the afternoon Kaku finds out that Akagi has NO sorties left while Kaga is down to less then 80. He reluctantly decides to withdraw by moving due west. If there is shipping at Johnston tomorrow then he will still be in range to hit it.

2. While this is being done, Kaku makes the decision to unleash his Battlecruisers in an attempt to smash more American Warships. Hiei, Kirishima, CA Furutaka, and 4 DDs are detached and ordered to advance 240 miles NE looking for the enemy. If they find nothing then they are to retire to Palmyra.

3. Nearly a dozen I-Boats are on patrol in the area and they are all vectored in to, hopefully, add to the victory already achieved this day.

I thought it was quite good. Very entertaining and nicely directed. Couldn't help but notice a lot of the actors from The Last Samurai were in this film as well. Seeing the DONGER (Gedde Watanabe) was a blast! How long has it been since 16 Candles?!!

How about that gang??!!

Think we certainly have the opportunity to write CV Enterprise OFF the lists! My guess is she is still afloat but a crippled mess. Perhaps she'll be gotten by my BCs or an I-Boat!

I really second-guessed my choice to seek battle. Jim's DEATH STAR email didn't help much either. Looks like the trap worked to near perfection. Damned weather is the only thing I have to complain about.

Here is the current screenshot with the CARDIV movement west and the BCs swinging NE then south for Palmyra. All the I-Boats on the screen plus four more just off the north edge of the board are ordered to patrol between PH and Johnston.

I enjoy it but comparing to Japanese versions of story it was only OK.
2013 version have to much "Hollywood" for me. Also knowing real story and after watching Japanese movies You will notice how 2013 is far from original(not only magic). But still it is good entertainment.

Congrats about Big E

KUDOS!!

I'm beginning to question the wisdom of your opponents and their seemingly disregard for losses over the first month. [&:] Maybe I'm more conservative that other Allied players, but at this point they have 4 American CVs to use. I would have each in a separate TF (CV, 2 or 3 CA/CL, 6 to 8 DDs), but have at least two working together. Of course I would add in a Marine fighter group to each CV to give me 45 fighters per CV. Even if they are the old Buffalo, they can hope some survive to get to your Vals and Kates.

Looks like your quick push to the Eastern Pacific - Midway, Johnson, Line Island group, has been very successful. This should allow your plans to go forward.

OT - Besides having to work out of Knoxville office tomorrow (4a to 4p), I'm off until 5pm Wednesday (rubs salt in wounds). [8D]

I can't even read your opponent's AAR anymore. Why they continue to throw themselves into the wood chipper is beyond me.

Battle of Johnston Isle: Day 2

Post by John 3rd »

Combat Report
January 9, 1942

It was a mistake to pull the CVs away from the fight on the 9th. With sorties so low I allowed myself to think caution was the better answer then swinging for the fence in January 1942. That decision is reversed for next turn. The Carriers move back in to finish off cripples. This will occur NEXT TURN. Let us go through things for THIS day.

North Pacific
My Reinforcement TF of 4 CL and 4 DD run into those two DDs that got away from the Philippines. Pope and Pillsbury engage but no damage is done to either side in a short fight.

Central Pacific
Midway
A Bombardment TF of CA Louisville, CL Phoenix, and 6 DD hit the atoll. Since the base is over-stacked presently, casualties are HIGH. We take 703 and have 34 Guns disabled by the two cruisers. CD is quite active though and scores multiple hits on Louisville and Phoenix so they do get a little something back for the effort.

A large convoy arrives just after the Americans depart and SS Grudgeon manages to sink DD Shiokaze with a functional Torp. SAD!

Johnston
CARDIV1
While trying to disengage the carriers, I run smack dab into a SURFACE FIGHT! The CVs have to fend off 8 American DDs. Though frightening to watch--yet AGAIN--the fight goes in Japan's favor with 3 US DDs taking heavy damage and three more burning when the action ends six rounds later. CVE Hosho takes a single hit and is not in bad shape due to that. Everything A OK.

In the afternoon a small strike is launched. The force of 23 Zero and 11 Val hits DDs Porter, Kilty, and Bagley each take a single bomb. Are WORST they are heavily damaged...perhaps sunk.

I re-organize the Air Groups. Three Zeros groups move to Akagi. She has no sorties left but can serve as a CAP carrier. Shift her Val Daitai over to Ryujo and we're good to go. Rr-Adm Kaku orders the Fleet to turn and go back into the flight.

BC TF
The fast BC's Hiei and Kirishima find the American TF's. They are full of fight!

1st Battle
The first battle clash sees the TF fight Enterprise's Escorts: CA Northampton and Salt Lake City and 7 DDs. The BCs severely damaged both CAs and 2 DDs. Unfortunately CA Furutaka is hit by 5 8" shells. She stays with the TF but is significantly damaged. DD Arare is sunk due to 2 8" shells and 5 5" shells.

2nd Battle
Just as the BCs knock out the CAs, into the fight come modern CLs Honolulu and Helena as well as CL Concord and 4 DDs. I know Allied players LOVE these modern CLs and Japanese players HATE them! That position is bourne out as the two fast-firing American CLs finish off Furutaka and DD Tanikaze. The BCs transform CL Helena into a wreck with 3 14" shells. Honolulu is hit as well and DD Craven is--possibly--sunk. One US DD is sunk due to colliding with Concord. The Japanese are now low on ammo and decide to disengage.

3rd battle
As they disengage, the Japanese run into the American CAs again. This time CA Salt Lake City is SUNK. Northampton is hit again and heavily damaged. Two US DDs are hurt as well. The Japanese head for Palmyra.

Day's Results
Japan
SUNK: CA Furutaka and 3 DD. Moderate damage to 2 DDs and light damage to CVE Hosho.

America
SUNK: CA Salt Lake City & Chester and 4 DDs. Heavy Damage to CA Northampton, CL Helena and 6 DDs. Moderate/Light Damage to CL PHoenix and 5 DDs.

ORDERS:
1. These two TF effectively screen what I assume to be CV Enterprise. They had moved only 3 hexes from where Enterprise had been hit on the 8th. This is the reason why we order the CVs back into the fight.

2. Order the Ise-Hyuga TF to bombard Canton. They will do this and cover the landing there.

3. The Yellow box below is the SS KILL BOX. We are seriously hunting for cripples.

Have to go to work so will finish when I get back...
