The situation is as follows:
- March 27th 1942, near the end of amphibious advantage
- My main focus had been in taking over the SW Pacific islands (Suva, Noumea are taken, Pago Pago will be the last American stand).
- Burma and India had been secondary on my conquest list. Main objective here is only to push the Allies out of range of Magwe oil, to put the fighting focus up north to gain as much oil as I can before the inevitable heavy bombing campaign
- I have command of the sea; this after heavily fought battles in which, at the cost of 2 heavy cruisers and 3 destroyers lost, I sank 3 battleships and several cruisers& destroyers, wiped out Hermes air squadron and left 2 additional battleships in heavy damage, inneed of long repair.
The specific question is; what should I do with Chittagong? try capturing, bypass or leave?
as you can see, he brought pretty much everything available to guard this base.
I am debating if the benefits will out weight the costs of capturing it
some key benefits:
- Chittagong is "clear terrain"
- His LCUs are numerous, but poor quality until much later on
- Good chance to destroy scarce British devices, even more considering low rate of replacements
- Coastal hex is subject to battleship bombardment
- British air forces cannot maintain the kind of attrition losses we are both suffering over Chittagong skies; once he is depleted, I can easily start a bombing campaign
disadvantages:
- as mentioned already, lots and lots of troops
- he is on a rail junction, he can easily bring reinforcements
- he is on a rail junction, his supply flow is much better than mine,
- monsoon coming
- I will need to bring a lot more LCUs to this theater
- Lots of AA will deplete my bombers fleet
