The Cautionaries 1.2: Capt (J) vs Rysyonok (A), Game 1

I am beginning to hate with much passion forced combat during disembarkment onto enemy hexes. 3rd Hawaiian is now down to 1 (one) functional rifle squad. Joy!

Tomorrow is the day. 4th Marines are set and ready; Hawaiians repaired a couple more guns, so they have a total of 22 already on the sand. Will Maloelap fall? I know that engineers are way too fast and powerful in this game of who fortifies first, but is it going to be a gamebreaker?

Frustration, Incorporated. How many regiments at 100% strength and planning do I need to throw on this bunch of engineers without a single gun to back them up? And why does the game allow such magnificent fortifications to be built over a short period of time? No wonder map is covered with maxed out ports and forts within 6 months. And maybe *one* forced shock attack is enough? I have 31 support squad left to unload - are both of my regiments going to have to do a full-out assault just because of them? B.S.

Actually you're not doing that badly ... the relative losses mean more than the odds. It is a strange aspect of this system that the odds are important when they are 2:1 (plus one for each fort level) but otherwise are rather meaningless. If you can either run him out of supply (by bombardment) or acheive sufficient combat power to inflict more casualties than you are suffering (by adding a few more troops) and toss in a few more engineers to reduce his fortification level, then this stuggle will be over shortly.

But that does not help when my battleships are a week away.

Still, don't you think engineers are overpowered? 18 guns to none - the battle would have been over in a matter of minutes in real life.

Maloelap falls - finally.
The axis of advance is planned as Iwo Jima (100VP) --> Tuguegarao (last American-held hex in Luzon) + Naha (375VP and a chance to cut off Singapore convoys).

There is a method to my madness.
My subs are harassing Home islands for a reason: if IJN requested conversions on day one, those ships will be sent to Tokyo to battle my subs, no doubt about that. And I will know not to send out my destroyers unescorted from now on. So far, no conversions have been seen. No aircraft either - IJA must have it all on PI. Good to know

AP Izumo Maru capsizes at night - empty, sadly.
IJN ASW group at Ponape is getting deadly - two subs have been maimed in two days. No worry; BBs will be there in a week to add up to Japanese destroyer losses.
Cleanup at Maloelap proceeds as planned, as those pesky Japanese just won't come out of the jungle.
