The DE conversion get Radar. I believe the APD conversion does not. Does this make any significant difference ?

Do you want either your DEs or APDs shooting it out? RADAR will help hunting subs making the DE a little more effective in that regard. The DE pretty much just chases subs (and frankly subs seem to kill more ASW ships than the other way around). The APD is more versatile being able to fill a number of roles.

Just one thought on this. I do not believe that APD crews will train past 45 without surface combat. DEs will train to 55 by just sailing about.

Ok this is a very interesting observation. Are you sure about that?
I always thought that an APD is a standard military vessel so should train up to 55 as the other conversions.

It does seem that APDs are able to train to 55. Also, they do have RADAR also.

From looking at the upgrade paths, it did not seem that the APDs had radar.  Is there a subsequent ugrade to the APD not listed on the DD conversions that gets it the radar?

It's possible that IJN and USN APD's are being confused with each other.....
