First scenario: Valley of Tears! Here's the protagonists. IDF with quite the odds to beat, with more than 1:3 odds against men and at 1:2+ against armor.

Into the battle... The victory conditions have to do with Arab forces controlling the whole of the two hills (#3 and #4) and the grove in front of them. The IDF forces are deployed to hit the Syrians hard the second they roll into their gun sights...

That October War session picture is from a couple of weeks ago. Sure enough, with Alan's full Arab-Israeli Wars scenario pack now available, it was time to dust off the venerable game from the shelf, and deploy a quick solo scenario for play.

Situation B-2: Rafid, January 1973, Golan Heights.

Thank you for your support! I am afraid you'll need to wait for the VN screenshots a tad longer. We're busy building the foundations, not that much visuals to show for it just yet. [:)]

Had a great wargaming thursday yet again, playing Lock n Load's World at War'85 game Blood and Bridges.

Image

Scenario played today was Hold The Line, with elements of a Soviet Guards Tank Regt advancing a rag tag group of UK forces somewhere in Germany.

I played the Soviets, and as always brought my strong mech formation into board high in hope this time the decadent west will pay the price.

My command; 72nd Guards Tank:

1 HQ + 7 T-80 platoons + 3 BMP-2 + 3 Mech Inf + SA-13 Gopher, plus a MANPAD and ATGM system.

See the rag and tag British forces there? In turn 3 they get two Lynx flights, so I better get moving. I opted to swing via north, in a hope I can bring my force into open as one go. overwhelming the few enemy troops there.

The World at War system is based on activation chits, which activates the whole format. I have only one activation chit for my Guards Tank unit, while Brits have two chits per formation, and they have two formations. 3rd Queens Rifle and Royal Lancers. There's two end turn chits in the cup as well, with both of them drawn ending the turn. It therefore is always a bit of a mystery how many goes you have per turn.

What else. Only HQs spot for artillery, and Recon units have enemy immediately spotted. I have no recon, so I need to roll into open first.

And so it starts. Wreck marker marks the two T80 platoon who strayed into Brit Milan teams view. Which infantry has which support weapon needs not to be predetermined, so atleast I now know where they are. Once I spot them with my HQ I have two artillery strikes for the game, so will target them as a priority

Otherwise I was doing OK, I had my force outside their LOS, ready to enter the open and get into firing positions. The road network forces me to cross the rivers in selected locations only with bridges available. They get to be quite the kill zones. Blood and Bridges indeed!

Brits have two MRLS missions, hitting a hex and the six surrounding hexes. It can't kill any hard targets but certainly can disrupt them And so it does. I need to rally to get moving again.

Why was I in a such tight formation then? Soviet HQ only has a range of 3 hexes, out of it and I need to roll if my troops go Out of Command, in which case they can't fire (but can Op Fire). Quite a task to spread out but stay together at the same time!

Carnage continues! Brits basically have one Milan team and one Striker ATGM platoon, but since they activate at best twice per turn I get bogged down badly. Worse yet, I keep having my HQ out of play so I can't plot artillery. That would get rid of the Brit Milan team under no time. At the same time, I have now the Brit Striker in my gunsights, but just can't get enough tanks into play to have a go at it. Finally, I manage a step loss at it.

Still, this is not looking good. And the Lynx are about to enter the fray!

There's no Combat Results Table as such, each unit has its Hard and Soft attack range and effect modeled as die rolls, and one for defence as well. Milan for instance has four dice where a roll of four or higher results in a hit. I then get to roll defence rolls, in case of T-80 three dice where five or higher results in a deflection per hit.

Enemy roll here in the above picture. Three hits. Ouch!

I finally got a round where I had my HQ in play, and I called my both artillery strikes at the same turn at enemy Milan team. Rotten die rolls, so I ended up with infantry only taking a step loss, so they remain effective. My BMP-2s with Saggers were also quite unlucky with their rolls, but at the end of the day Soviet propaganda will make a big deal out of the forced recon (nevermind I was supposed to take that town), wiping out enemy Striker platoon, an infantry platoon and a half, and a Lynx flight!

I called it a day at turn six.

Image

A fun system, plays really fast, so we were able to play the scenario in about two and a half hours. Always nice, when you have like three hours per evening, so a scenario per Thursday!

To be continued!

Yes, Crossroads I do remember now you sending me the link. My problem, cats will wreck any game I have out. However, I have a solution. I have a jigsaw puzzle case that I can close for a 1500 puzzle. Maybe this will work.

I'll have to see about the games. Do you need a account with boardgame?

Cheers, I believe you do need an accout at BGG for any purchase there. I've bought several games from there, a few bargains even. Having said that I am very careful when looking at a seller, I only buy from someone who's got like a dozen sell transactions there with good reviews.

Here's my current game collection, not everything from BGG at all, but it is a nice place to keep a list of things [:)]

My game collection at BGG

The latest addition was the Warfighter Tactical Spec Ops game I hope my kids would get interested on as well, got it like three weeks ago but haven't had the time to set it up yet.

I have never promoted my war games hobby to my boys, except to talk about it. They have never shown any interest (except in first person shooters, which I am not interested in at all).

I will post some pictures when the game arrives. I really like the way the CS Vietnam game will be coming along. I have a few board games but they just collect dust. I still have Air Assault on Crete from Avalon Hill and my first game was Tobruk, lent it to someone, I think and never seen it again. Still mad about that one. Especially, when I save everything. I sold my Pattons Best game about ten years ago.

The Groghead site has a good forum on board games, I think you're over there as well?

Yes, I am indeed there as well, my favourite Boardgame forum [:)]

Same callsign, but World at War counters as avatars, instead of the Arab-Israeli War ones here.

Duh, the picture link did not work. How's this then
