About a thousand different theories here which just goes to say that nobody really knows.

Here are my own pet rules.

When searching I layer units and altitudes usually between 6k and 12k.

When doing ASW I set altitudes between 1k to 5k. Can't really say which is better so I mix them up. You don't need to be at 100 feet.
I never use aircraft that don't have ship to surface radar for ASW. The Allies just get too many not to. Different for Japan.
I don't worry about skill to much. If I have ASW skills in the 50 range with radar I am pretty happy and I seem to sink plenty of Japanese subs.

Lowpe is correct, night search is important and I am lazy as all hell about this. But if you don't have enough assets then focus on day search first.

And Allied float planes and all Army bombers don't have radar. Why would you use them on ASW? I only do so early in the war or emergencies. There plenty of better planes with radar, Avengers, Barracudas, Navy medium and heavies, SBD-5, all navy multi-engine sea planes and so on.

I am the Holy Roman Emperor and am above grammar.

That comment applies to so many aspects of this game...and in my view is one of the things that makes the game so great.
