No - RSR was a Tom Clancy book about the USSR attacking Europe and in the Atlantic. Red Dawn was the one about Russian Paratroops taking a town in the USA.

I'm pretty sure that Clancy's Red Storm Rising is the book where A-10 come to be known as the Devil's Cross.

At any rate, they're great ground attack planes.

It is so. Red Storm Rising is a great book, and that nickname for the Warthog is spot on. Usually, it’s the first thing coming to my mind every time I see footage of an A-10.

Red Dawn is not a book, but a Hollywood movie with a stupidly improbable premise.

When you Amis are all done with your A-10s, you've beaten them up and flown them to their last legs, and their fatigue ratings is "99", just sell them to Canada. We are world renown for buying the clapped out, surplus gear from other nations' inventories. Then we spend years and millions/billions repairing them. After that, we put out a tender for new stuff. We then accept the best equipment bid. The opposition says we should have chosen the less expensive stuff and swear that's what they would've done if they were the party in office. Then we have an election and the opposition take office. They then pay expensive cancellation fees and order the less expensive, less capable equipment. There are cost over-runs and delays. When the second rate gear arrives, it ends up being more expensive than the first rate gear, but arrives late and costs more than if we had stuck with the first contract.

Sounds stupid, but that is Canada. Nothing is too bad for our guys and gals in green or blue.

You got some good FA-18's from OZ, only a million flying hours, only driven to church on Sunday's.

There's an air freight outfit not far from me in the Toronto region that uses DC-3s. Old does not mean obsolete. A bullet from any functional firearm of any age is still lethal. The 1911 is over a century old, the human body is much older than that and has not changed much at all.

Buffs are not obsolete and will outlive B-1s and B-2s, because they are cost efficient and can leverage stand-off weapons. The Air Force has been trying to get rid of the A-10 forever, with the F-35 being claimed as the plane that do everything, but does nothing terribly well, and costs a fortune. And a drone cannot lift that cannon that the A-10 can. And the troops on the ground seem to appreciate the A-10. They do they heavy lifting so that should count for something.

And F-4s came without guns initially. That changed PDQ when missiles were not the be all end all.

And I would fly a DC3/C47 anytime.

Or a 747 (a lot of Buff tech in that plane).

On a side note.....my copy of Sieg Heil came from a co-worker when I was still working. Seems it came from her father in law who was a rear-admiral in the USN, passed away, and left a bunch of books to her. Didn't write down his name but hope to find it when I start reading the collection she gifted me.
