RE: OT: A-10's in Korea!
Loved that plane. When I was a grunt, if my a** was in a bind, that's the A/C I wanted looking over my shoulder. A-10, as in attack, pure ground support.[8D]

I think in the book "Red Dawn" something, I forgot the full name, The A-10 was nicknamed "The Devils Cross". It is the definition of Heavy-duty....GP

Maybe "Red Storm Rising" is the book?

RE: OT: A-10's in Korea!
A-10 are still in use today? Thought they were phased out?
RE: OT: A-10's in Korea!
They are looking for a replacement as far as I know. But I believe they are still in use....GP

The Air Forces wants flashy fighter aircraft, the US Congress wants effective aircraft . . .
Not to mention the US Army which would probably be willing to field A-10s if the US Air Force does not want them.
Could you imagine A-10s strafing and bombing lightly armoured modern Naval vessels![:'(]

Army would love them as Airforce wants to shoot down planes not support ground units. But alas army is not allowed fixed wing aircraft so has to rely on helicopters for most close ground support.
Unfortunately for Airforce, good for ground forces, they keep trying to get rid of them then once again they prove there worth and Airforce gets stuck with them for awhile longer.

No - RSR was a Tom Clancy book about the USSR attacking Europe and in the Atlantic. Red Dawn was the one about Russian Paratroops taking a town in the USA.ORIGINAL: btd64

RE: OT: A-10's in Korea!
I watched a recent "Warbirds" doc on the Apache Helicopter. They more or less said the Army prefers it to the A-10 because they have more direct control of the missions it flies and it can get closer with the weapons fire (because it can hover and pinpoint the enemy more easily).ORIGINAL: RhinoDad

They both have their uses. The A-10 can be easier to relocate around the globe and is faster.
Put a tail hook on the A-10 and give it to the US Marines . . . [X(]

Would not they love that. Maybe when no one else wants it they will get it.
The army keeps asking for one or something like it.

I saw them flying (between, not above, the mountains) in central New Hampshire last summer. I assumed they were an air national guard unit.ORIGINAL: castor troy

I'm pretty sure that Clancy's Red Storm Rising is the book where A-10 come to be known as the Devil's Cross.
At any rate, they're great ground attack planes.

As far as I'm concerned the Airforce merely pays lip to ground support. They look at it as something they need to recognize, but to them its a 'burden'.
Finally the A-10 comes along and they have to accept it, or take a chance on losing that roll to the Army, and the budget to go with it. Then almost from the beginning their MO is to 'lose' this plane.
Keep in mind here I talking about the 'Brass', not the pilot in the cockpit. Kinda like the 'Bomber Mafia' back in the day.
These geniuses even armed these A/C with an air-to-air missiles for Gulf War I. A/C not set up for that. Pilot tried to get a lock on a helo, but couldn't. Got frustrated. Gave the helo a burst from the 30mm, confetti.[:D]

Maybe they are also given infantry training as well so they know what it is like on the ground.
There is nothing wrong with the Cobra and the Marine version has two engines.
