Sub Action:
SS I-164, sitting off the southern coast from Soerabaja put a torpedo in xAK Si Kiang. I was hoping for a kill, but the large xAK survived. Well it survived until the afternoon phase when the I-164 put another torpedo into her sending her to the bottom.

I-162, sitting of the coast from Soerabaja attacked DD Edsall and hit the crippled destroyed with a torpedo sinking her.

Luzon:
Zeros flying from Tuguegarao swept the skies over Manila today finding nearly 30 fighters in the air. The zeros swept into them blasting 11 of them out of the sky with no losses.

Hong Kong:
Air attacks here actually did a little damage to the ground forces while my men rested. The artillery conducted an attack and inflicted a few losses. After a day of rest my men are attacking again tomorrow.

China:
A handful (3) Hudsons tried to bomb Wuchang city during the night. They hit nothing. Nates from nearby airfields have been ordered to expand their CAP to cover the city during the day.

Borneo:
A score of B-17s bombed the oil fields at Miri today damaging them a little bit. I have moved a sentai of Zeros to Miri - although there is no AV support there yet to provide CAP while the engineers and aviation support are still 2-3 days out.

Malaya:
IJA Troops captured Alor Star without a fight as it was undefended. Looks like all troops in Malaya are fleeing to Singapore and I have no way to stop them.

SRA:
Both Hollandia and Manus are captured without a fight today. The troops at Hollandia will work their way down the coast while the ones at Manus will begin expanding the airfield.

My Combat TF roaming the South China Sea found another allied TF and sunk an xAKL during the night. I am spotting these TFs and directing the combat TF to them with react set to 6 so all I need to do is get close.

Hong Kong:
More air attacks on Hong Kong inflict minor losses on the troops there. I am also targeting the airfield to prevent the building of forts.

My attack here is repulsed again but losses on both sides are pretty even except I am disabling squads and the allies are suffering them destroyed.

Mindanao:
Troops land at Davao without incident.

Malaya:
In the jungle SW of Kota Bharu I catch up to the fleeing allies and attack. No losses on my side and approximately 300 on the allies side (all squads destroyed) and I force one of the two units to retreat further down the rail line.

Luzon:
At Batangas, the allied troops attack my paratroopers wiping them out.
Nearby at Lucena, more paratroopers secure the base as my reinforcements are coming up the rail from Naga.

Malaya:
Allied bombers attack the airfield at Kota Bharu during the night inflicting pointless damage. My followup attack in the jungles SW of Kota Bharu destroy the allied Base Force holding the line.

Borneo:
Troops come ashore at Brunei.

Mindanao:
More troops and supplies come ashore at Davao as they rally for an attack. They troops there attack and take Davao causing the Battalion there to retreat to the SW.

Luzon:
B-17s attack my combat TF at Vigan but miss both DDs. My Nates on CAP damaged a few B-17s. More B-17s then attack another combat TF at San Fernando missing the CL as well.

My troops attacked at San Fernando but were repulsed. The forts were brought to level 0 and the troops are ready to continue the attack.

North of Waigeo, more B-17s attack the small CV TF operating in the area. They targetted the CVE Taiyo but missed with all bombs, while Claudes damaged several and 1 was shot down by flak.

Sub Warfare:

I-164 attacked another damaged allied DD south of Soerabaja but missed with all 4 torpedoes. I was a bit disheartened until the next combat came. Same sub, better target - CL Marblehead. Four more torpedoes were launched, but this time they bracketed the target better and reported three of the four torpedoes hit !!! The Cruiser did not sink, but I heard sinking noises several times during the turn and believe the Marblehead was one of them.

A few moments later I-164 was located by enemy DDs and attacked. Only a single hit, but time to move. When I checked her after the turn she had moderate damage, so back to Saigon for repairs.

The rest of the day was a few air attacks on troops and Hong Kong - not much to report. My attack at Hong Kong was repulsed again but enemy losses are increasing...

Hong Kong:
Ground combat at Hong Kong (77,61)

Japanese Shock attack

Attacking force 15907 troops, 277 guns, 202 vehicles, Assault Value = 452

Defending force 6026 troops, 126 guns, 75 vehicles, Assault Value = 117

Japanese adjusted assault: 141

Allied adjusted defense: 149

Japanese assault odds: 1 to 2 (fort level 0)

Allied ground losses:
147 casualties reported
Squads: 44 destroyed, 2 disabled
Non Combat: 11 destroyed, 12 disabled
Engineers: 0 destroyed, 0 disabled
Guns lost 10 (9 destroyed, 1 disabled)
Vehicles lost 12 (7 destroyed, 5 disabled)

Assaulting units:
66th Infantry Regiment
19th Ind. Engineer Regiment
38th Division
20th Ind. Engineer Regiment
2nd RF Gun Battalion
1st Hvy.Artillery Regiment
3rd Ind.Hvy.Art. Battalion
5th RF Gun Battalion

2nd Ind.Hvy.Art. Battalion
20th Ind. Mtn Gun Battalion

Defending units:

Luzon:
At San Fernando my troops attacked reducing their forts to level 0 and achieving 1:1 odds. The base should fall tomorrow.

SRA:
Troops at Vanimo capture the base without issue. They will load back up and keep moving down the coast.

Borneo:
My troops at Brunei attack but fail to capture the base. Enemy forts are now at 0, so next turn it should fall.

Ship Names:
Since no one has come forth with any suggestions to name my Destroyers, I have named the first two after fellow Japanese players who have helped me in the past - PaxMondo and Mike Solli. Hopefully their namesakes will be as much help to the IJN as they have been to me.

Sub Warefare:
I-123, off the coast of Balikpapan, scores another victory by landing two torpedoes into the side of AO Trinity sending her to the bottom.

Bunch of air attacks at Hong Kong, Burma and China resulting in many disabled enemy squads.

Luzon:
My attack at San Fernando went as planned and the addition of the Kanno Det tipped the scales and I captured the base. Over 1300 enemy troops killed as the PA Inf Div retreats.

SRA:
My troops attacked at Sorong and captured the base as the allies there surrendered.

Borneo:
My men at Brunei also captured the base, but the enemy troops retreated. As expected the oil is half damaged - 10/20. Not a big deal, but we will repair the oil here too.

One of my issues last game was I didn't repair the oil early enough as I had plenty to keep a positive oil flow - that was until Magwe was bombed flat (easy target) and then I started losing oil each day and was not able to regain the positive flow. So I will repair most - if not all - oil in the SRA. I plan on repairing Miri back to 300 and will repair Brunei back up to 20.

My surface hunters in the South China Sea found another allied xAKL trying to escape and sunk her.

I attacked Hong Kong with everything I have within range and still they repulsed my attack. I don't think I had this much trouble last game taking Hong Kong - and at this rate everything will probably be destroyed.

Malaya:
My troops took control of the empty base at Taiping opening the rail line for my troops to zoom in. I have tanks ordered to head south to open the next rail head. I need some paratroopers over here.

A slow turn overall. My Supply total is decreasing by 20-30 thousand every day despite making a bunch of supplies. My factories are all repairing and its eating through my supplies. But, this is what I bought extra supplies for. My Armament and Vehicle expansion is almost done while Aircraft and Engine expansion continues. Not a whole lot is being consumed by R&D repairs, but that will come over time.

Sub Warfare:
I-21 sitting east of Pearl found a 7-pack of US destroyers and for an unknown reason attacked them. The two torpedoes launched of course missed - but even more intriguing is that the ASW attacks by the US failed to damage my sub !!!

Hong Kong:
My air attacks are actually starting to disable combat squads - usually its just Non-combat ones that I get. So maybe he is running out of those :D My ground assault is one more stopped, but at least this time 1 enemy unit was destroyed. My guess is that it was the Base Force there as Non-Combat and Vehicles were destroyed.

China:
My air attacks here are inflicting some damage on enemy troops in the open, but nothing of any huge value. I am planning today to put several hours into the China theater and get the ball rolling here - between sorting out the garrisons and starting my push. China is a huge time sink and I usually avoid it in the first week or two of the game.

Luzon:
Not seeing any allied planes left in Luzon - so either he bought them out and moved them - or withdrew/disbanded them for the aircraft.

My bombardment attack at Bayombong inflicted some damage but more importantly gave me the intel I wanted. The defender is a single Battalion and from the combat report they have little to no combat strength -- an attack has been ordered here.

Borneo:
With Miri and Brunei in my hands, its time to start working my way around the sides. The landing at Kuching went quite well, with the defensive guns there only landing a single hit on an IJN DD. All of my troops unloaded in one day, but I will need to continue unloading as they are low on supplies and have been ordered to attack this turn.

I have started cleaning up the Home Islands - all ships are being moved to one of a handful of ports that I operate out of. They are easy to determine - Nagasaki and Tokyo for troop deployments. Fukuoka and Ominato for convoys. Plus a couple other places. I have 5 resource convoys setup and as the game goes on I will be adding to them. Tracker reports I only have 82 days of resources in Japan - and that is with me buying a bunch. The convoys I have will not affect that much, but its a start and as my ships get organized I will be setting up more.

Supplies are still be used at a crazy rate - but factories are repairing all over Japan increasing my war capabilities. Armaments and Vehicles will be finished repairing first, then active aircraft, then finally Engines.

My Naval Shipyard points are also being spent at a unsustainable rate - I am losing 1010 points a turn - almost as much as I make. But thanks to the Million points I started with I can sustain this rate for nearly 3 years. I have all 19 Shokaku CVs accelerated... And I just noticed - my extra CVLs for 1944 are not there... Houston we have a problem.

I have started the first round of ship conversions - mostly worthless xAKLs converting to either PBs or ACMs.

Restart Required

Post by Xargun »

Well we need to restart  We tried to manipulate the DB to make the CVLs show up but they do not - I think it loads the ship data only on the first turn so we are hosed.... Nomad checked and it seems he had the wrong nationality on my CVLs. This allows us to fix a few minor items we discovered as well -- I was getting too many PPs, and he added his extra pilots in wrong - so he only got them once instead of monthly.

I am a bit sad as I have been having a good start - and now he will save Force Z.. If it was only 1 or 2 CVLs I would be temped to say so what, but its 25 and a HUGE chunk of points (25 points). Oh well - better we do it now than in another month or two of game.

Nomad is making the final changes to the DB and once I get them I will begin working on Turn 1 again. There are a few changes I will make but turn one is pretty much set in stone. Just hope I don't forget anything. And I will probably have a horrible turn one against his ports now.

Dec 7th, 1941 (take 2) !!

Post by Xargun »

So since I thought I had a good Turn 1 last time I was all set to watch a miserable turn, but I don't think it was. I will let you guys judge as well.

Big Event (Attack on Pearl Harbor):
A single Mini-sub penetrated the torpedo netting and put a torpedo into the Maryland (again !!).

Midget Sub attack inside harbor of Pearl Harbor!!!

DD Dale, Torpedo hits 1, on fire, heavy damage
BB Maryland, and is sunk

Airbase hits 14
Airbase supply hits 1
Runway hits 28
Port hits 5

I am not sure why it reported the Maryland as sunk unless that Magazine explosion was a super crit and destroyed the ship. It might be true since I didn't even attack the Maryland in the attack. We will wait and see. This time around I scored 23 torpedo hits vs 20 on the previous run. So overall I got better strikes, but its hard to say what the damage will actually be. Nomad has taken a screenshot for me so at some point later he will share it.

Secondary Event (Attack on Manila Harbor):

So I split KB as before with 3 CVs in each group. Car Div 2 is attacking Pearl and Car Div 1 is attacking Manila. So the Manila strike comes in and there goes my Zeros bombing the port at Bataan ???? Not sure what happened there as that was not their orders - and my strike went against Manila without any fighter coverage

Morning Air attack on Manila , at 79,77

Weather in hex: Clear sky

Raid detected at 84 NM, estimated altitude 16,000 feet.
Estimated time to target is 31 minutes

Allied ground losses:
8 casualties reported
Squads: 0 destroyed, 0 disabled
Non Combat: 0 destroyed, 3 disabled
Engineers: 0 destroyed, 0 disabled

Port hits 10
Port fuel hits 3

For some reason my bombers seemed to like his PT boats. I only managed to sink 5 subs this time and damage 12 of them, as well as other aircraft. I seriously thought about a day two strike here, but I would need to escort it heavily and that would leave my CVs woefully under protected against any sort of air attack. So I put fighters on all CAP and am withdrawing and heading into the SRA to kill fleeing ships. I will try to get some more port attacks with my LR Bombers in Formosa in a day or two.

Sub Warfare:
The Dutch get the first confirmed kill of the war in a dastardly sub attack on my troop convoy. Worst part is the poor loading of troops on turn 1 put an entire unit in one xAK... can you guess which ship got hit and sunk?? So I had to buy back the sub-unit and now I have to wait for it to reform.

Submarine attack near Kompong Trach at 55,73

Japanese Ships
xAK Johore Maru, Torpedo hits 2, heavy fires, heavy damage

Allied Ships
SS KXVII

Japanese ground losses:
29 casualties reported
Squads: 0 destroyed, 1 disabled
Non Combat: 1 destroyed, 0 disabled
Engineers: 0 destroyed, 0 disabled
Guns lost 1 (1 destroyed, 0 disabled)

Luzon:
My air attacks here went pretty well - not many planes destroyed but a lot damaged... if you can believe the reports.

I performed paratrooper assault on vigan, Aparri and Laoag again and captured all three bases.

So we did turn 1 a second time to fix the Carriers and a couple minor things - we also thought we fixed the issue of a workaround for the Motorized Support replacement rates I originally wanted. Well we did not, we added the convoys to deliver the items, but they were not marked correctly to actually drop the items off into the pool. So after some discussion of continuing on, restarting or giving up we decided on another restart. So here we are now...

Pearl Harbor (Main Event 1):
As I expected with the 1st do-over my Pearl attack was not very spectactular. It was an odd combination of torpedoes and 800 kg bombs - only Kates were ordered to attack the harbor again while the Vals hit the airfields.

Morning Air attack on Pearl Harbor , at 180,107

Weather in hex: Clear sky

Manila Harbor (Main Event 2):
The main Morning attack was not very promising, but the game engine decided to be nice and gave me an afternoon strike as well which helped.

Overall my attacks this time around were less effective than the other two starts, except against the airfields in Luzon -- seems I plastered them pretty good this time.

As previous I took Vigan, Laoag and Aparri via airborne assault.

Sub Warfare:
SS I-10, east of Moala, out a torpedo into an allied xAK sinking her.
I-154, moving south, encountered 3 fleeing ships from Singapore and elected not to attack. 2 xAKLs and an xAP got away.

Luzon:
My bombers from Formosa struck already damaged airfields and Manila Port today. Airfields were defended by some CAP and losses were accrued on both sides. My strike on Manila port heavily damaged 1 xAP, 1 AV and sunk an already damaged sub and destroyer.

Tarawa:
Troops storm ashore and capture the base.

Malaya:
My troops capture Kota Bharu pushing all three enemy units into the jungle to the southwest.

Not much more happened other than a lot of ships moving and heavy bombing of enemy troops at Kota Bharu.

Are you seeing any evidence that he’s evacuating his Manila port? It’s so critical for the Allied player to get those subs out of port ASAP and into interdiction mode. How many subs do you think you’ve sunk there on day 1?

Thinking I sunk around 5 on day 1 along with crippling 6 and damaging 2 more. Then on turn 2 I sunk one of the damaged / crippled ones. I think there probably are 6 or so subs sitting in Manila port too damaged to move - or they will probably sink. His closest repair yard is Soerabaja that is even remotely safe, and if I find out the subs are hiding there, my CVs will pay a visit. So I am guessing half the subs there are sunk / crippled. Not a great showing but not bad.

Sub Warfare:
Day starts off with a Dutch sub sinking an APD carrying troops off the coast near Soc Trang.
Then three separate attacks against the AVP Poolster involving two different subs and six torpedoes. Luckily the third attack strikes with one sinking the ship.
Later in the afternoon another Dutch sub hits PB Eiko Maru with a torpedo sinking her near Miri.

Hong Kong:
Hong Kong air strikes mostly target the troops in anticipation of my attack, but a few go after the merchies in port, hitting seven and setting them on fire.

My attack at Hong Kong was repulsed, but I inflicted nearly as many losses on the defenders as I took.

Luzon:
Quiet day here as more troops and supplies are offloaded at Vigan. Paratroopers from the Yokosuka 3rd SNLF land and capture Bayombong.

Malaya:
More troops come ashore all along the coast as my men between the march into the jungle that will ultimately end at Singapore. I tried to hit Singapore Airfield and Port at night, but all of the planes went astray :x

I have expanded my Armaments and Vehicles some to accommodate for the 30+ Brigades I purchased. I have also done work on my Aircraft, Aircraft R&D and Engine factories. I have also halted/stopped all of the worthless ships, as well as all subs for now, while I gauge my shipyard costs. I have accelerated several of the Shokakus due to arrive in 1945 and will gauge that affect next turn before accelerating more carriers. My plan is to get up to around 1500-2000 negative in Naval Points per turn before thinking about stopping - at -2000 pts per turn my Naval Shipyard Pool will last 500 days. That might be long enough for many of the CVs to arrive.

I have also stopped the Yamato and Musashi as I converted two other BBs to fill that role.

I am now - but these turns are sometimes a day behind real life :) And I try to capture what I was doing / thinking at that point.

Sub Warfare:
Lots of sub action this turn, but mostly ASW efforts by the IJN against subs around Vigan. DMS W-16 spent all its ASW ammo, but managed to damage S-38 a bit.

Off the coast of Soc Trang another damn Dutch sub sinks an xAK carrying troops to Malaya. I do hate the initial loads for the invasions as they have every ship that can, carrying fuel - thats just a mistake. One good hit and the ship is lost. But it takes too long to unload and load correctly.

After dropping off a load of mines off in Balikpapan harbor, I-123 sinks two allied xAKLs coming into port.

Landings:
Troops come ashore at Miri, Ocean Island, Nauru Island and Sorong. The Shock attacks at Ocean and Nauru were successful taking the bases and destroying the enemy units there.

Hong Kong:
Most of the air attacks today concentrated on troops at Hong Kong, trying to support my own troops there to take the base.
Unfortunately they did not succeed, but we are inflicting even losses on the enemy - with ours being wounded and theirs being killed. Forts are also knocked down to level

Sub Warfare:
A Dutch sub opens the action by missing a nice fat troop-laden IJN xAP with a pair of torpedoes.

Then I-156 locates the CL Danae and hits with a single torpedo out of six. Would have liked more, but that might be enough to send her to port for a month or more.

Then I-165 sinks an allied xAKL near Toboali.

Landings:
Troops come ashore at Hollandia, Manus and Guam.

Hong Kong:
Another failed attack brings the defenses down to 0 and inflicts more losses on the defenders than we suffered.

Malaya:
Troops at Victoria Point take the base, chasing the survivors into the jungle to the north.

New Guinea:
Troops capture Sorong and engineers begin working on the airfield there.

Borneo:
Miri is captured but the damage to the oil/refineries is over the expected 50%. Not by much, but that means more supply will need to be spent.

CV-based Kates struck and sunk several enemy merchant ships trying to flee the PI area heading east. There are a bunch of them here, looks like his main avenue of escape at the moment.
