More Variants - The End of Western Imperialism - No Nomad please (Feb 1944)
Well we have spent our points (all 400 of them !!), came up with a couple Specials and Nomad spent many hours editing the database and I helped check it. I started turn 1 last evening and just sent it off to him now. Turn one is normally a long drawn out process, but I did all the prep work while working on spending my points so it wasn't that hard. Plus I don't do anything odd on turn one - like go for Mersing or Kendari, etc...
So 400 pts..... At first it was a bit hard to spend - so many choices - some very powerful, others less so. I studied Deaniks spending of his 395 in detail to determine why I think he spent it that way and I think I understood most of it. I copied some of his expenditures as they made a lot of sense and I wanted more land power earlier in the game to avoid leaving the SRA wide open so the 65th Bde got modified and cloned.... alot.
I spent 86.5 points on my Economy -- much higher than I originally thought I would spend, but as other sections got filled out the economy needed a boost too.
I spent 18 points on modifying bases. It was a lot, but I hope it helps either my economy or my defensive capabilities.
I spent 36.5 on air - which was a lot lower than I thought I would, but the choices just aren't that great in that section.
I spent 151.5 on my Navy - more than I thought. But once I understood the power of several of the choices points flowed like water.
I spent 101.5 on my army and land forces. A bit less than I thought, but I am happy with my choices.
And finally I spent 5 points in Other. A lot of the choices in this section are nice, but not really worth it in my mind. Perhaps I am completely wrong and totally missed the boat, but oh well it has sailed.
I will list all my choices in each section in another post, probably 1 per section - especially for the larger ones.

Re: The End of Western Imperialism - No Nomads
Spending Points... For those not familiar with Andy's Variant Point System there are several AARs and posts about it. Basically both sides agree on a number of points to spend on various things they want according to Andy's Cost chart. Now if both sides agree this chart can be modified to allow a lot more to happen. I have attached the spreadsheet we used for choices and point cost - it has a few errors on it but Nomad and I worked out what we wanted and moved on.
I will cover the easy sections first: Bases and Other.
Other:
The Other category allows modification of PPs, leaders, pilots, etc... As Japan my pilots start out strong so I didn't bother with most of this category. I thought about buying a few good ASW commanders, but it was a low priority and there wasn't enough points for it.
I did buy PPs and as many as allowed.
O 1 Add 25 PPs per turn: I bought the max here of 2.
O 2 Add 500 PPs at start: I bought 1 of these
Bases:
This was one of the sections I was excited about. You could add several things to your bases that are nice. Nomad allowed me to purchase things for bases that were not mine at start which really was what I wanted.
B 1 Add 1 to Port or Airfield potential: I bought 18 of these
Truk AF increased to 6 (Now I can build it into a level 9 AF - it will command the waters around it)
Babeldaob AF increased to 6 (Can build to level 9 - commanding the seas around it as well)
Babeldaob PT increased to 4 (Can now build it up to level 7 which will allow rearming of all sorts of weapons, including BB main guns, torpedoes and mines.)
Chichi-Jima AF increased to 1 (I can now build this island into a bomber base to help support islands to the south)
Tinian AF increased to 5 (Can build to level 8 and get the double AV Support bonus)
Saipan AF increased to 5 (Can build to level 8 and get the double AV Support bonus)
Iwo-Jima AF increased to 3 (Can build to level 6 now offering support for the Marianas)
Palembang PT increased to 4 (This will add 3 levels to the base port here, allowing me to haul more oil/fuel out of here. When Nomad took it last time there was over 1 million fuel sitting here as I couldn't haul it away fast enough.)
Miri PT increase to 1 (This will make building the PT up to 4 cheaper and allow me to run larger convoys)
Balikapapan PT increased to 2 (Larger port means faster fuel/oil loading)

Re: The End of Western Imperialism - No Nomads
All the bases are nice but feel having saipain and iwajima higher lever airbase sure will help but once the allies take it they can now support heavy bombers from Iowa jima and can support more from saipain
Re: The End of Western Imperialism - No Nomads
Now the section that is dear to my heart - the Economy !! The ability to manipulate the Japanese Economy is what brought me to this game and is why I play Japan and will never change.
This section contains the ability to buy extra Factories of all sorts - including aircraft R&D ones - a new source of Oil, as well as adding starting resources to your pools - oil, fuel, supplies, etc... I basically bought it all - a kid in the Harry Potter candy store.
E 1 Add size-30 Aircraft Factory: Where to begin. The best selection here and I bought 10 of them - 2 each for Sams, Frank R, Shindens, Randy, and Karyu. With the game able to go to end of 46 I wanted jets as well as normal top of the line fighters.
E 2 Add size-30 Engine Factory: To support my new fighters I picked 3 factories: Ha-43, Ha-45 and NE Turbojet. I want to get the engine bonus on the R&D as soon as possible.
E 3 Add 50 Industry (any type): I made a few mistakes on other purchases and ended up with some extra points so I bought 30 HI and 20 Vehicle Factories in Fusan. I am hoping this will pull resources there so I can make the short haul with them to Japan.
E 4 Add a size 50 Oil source: A no brainer for Japan. I bought it and shoved it in Hirosaki.
E 5 Add a new size-30 Repair Yard: Last game I bought this and split it between Truk and Babeldaob, but I was not allowed to enlarge it, which means I could not repair CVs. So this time I just put the whole thing in Truk - to support my new emphasis on the Solomons for this game.
E 6 Add 100k Supply: Bought this to spread around Japan to help offset the cost of expanding/changing factories.
E 7 Add 100k Fuel: Bought 1 of these to split between Babeldaob and Truk.
E 8 Add 250k Oil: Bought the max and put it all in Japan.
E 9 Add 250k Resources: Bought 5 (out of 6 permitted) and put it all in Japan. I am usually slow setting up convoys so I like the extra time this buys me.
E 10: Accelerate Engine Availability by 6 months: Looking at my R&D plans I realized I would get the Shinden before the engines, so I moved the Engine forward 6 months to 7/45.
E 12 Add 250k Naval or Merchant Shipyard Points: I bought 500k (max allowed) Naval Shipyard Points to support all my new ships.

Re: The End of Western Imperialism - No Nomads
Air Purchases
Not a whole lot here to spend on as many of them are limited.
A 1 Accelerate Aircraft by 1 month (max 6 months/10 pts each): I accelerated the Sam from 9-45 to 3-45. Accelerated the Frank R from 9-45 to 3-45.
A 4 Add 100 Pilot replacements per month for a year: I bought 100 pilots to arrive in 1942 (80 Navy/20 Army). I also bought 100 pilots to arrive in 1943 (70 Navy/30 Army).
A 10 Add a size-25 air unit in late 1942: I bought the max here - 3 units of Tojo IIc fighters.
A 11 Add a size-75 air unit in late 1942: I bought the max here - 2 units of Tojo IIc fighters.
A17 Accelerate Air Device by 6 months: Not sure on this one here, but I accelerated the H-6 Radar from 6-44 to 6-43. This should enable my naval bombers (Nells and others) to find targets and attack them easier.
A 20 Add Training Air groups (2 max): We modified this a bit to make it a single size-48 air unit, or 2 size-24s or 3 size-16s. I bought a size-48 IJN fighter unit, and 3 IJN size-16 bomber units (2 units of Vals, 1 of Kates). I chose these to help increase my trained navy pilots - both fighters and bombers.

Naval Purchases
This section has tons of options and most of them are very nice. A good place to spend extra points if you are not sure where to put them...
For new ships I bought the following:
5 new Shokaku CVs arriving in 1945
36 new Akitsuki DDs arriving in 1945
25 new Ryujo CVLs arriving in 1944
10 new Mogami CAs arriving in 1943
Next big area was N 7 Change a ship to a different class - this is really nice and lets both sides get rid of useless models and replace them with much better ones.
Change all CVs (14 total) to Shokaku class
Change BBs Hiei and Kirishima to Yamato class
Change all CVLs (4) to Ryujo class
Change all CVEs (3) to Taiyo class
Change all DD Minekaze (x17), all DD Kamikaze (x9) and another 13 various DDs to Akitsuki class.
Change 24 CHa-1 class SCs to Ansyu-C xAKs
Change all (68) Daigen class xAKLs to LSDs
Change 4 Miyati class xAKLs to Lima class AKEs
I bought increased Mine availability for both type 93 and type 88
I also added 100 Troop/900 Cargo capacity to all (189) Aden class xAKs

Land Purchases
After studying deaniks purchases I liked them and modified them to fit what I wanted / needed.
L 1 Increase Land Replacement Rate by 25: I tried to buy this for both Type 3 Medium Tanks and Motorized Support. But due to the way the database works I was unable to get the Motorized Support. But I will be getting 50 Type 3 Tanks per month for free once they come into production.
L 2 Accelerate Land Device by 6 months: I accelerated the Type 3 Medium Tank from 6/44 to 12/42
L 3 Add a new unrestricted Division in 1942 (Bde/Rgts cost 1/3): I bought 15 new Infantry Bde based off the new TOE of the 65th Bde (see L 15 below)
L 4 Add a new unrestricted Division in 1943: I bought 17 more Infantry Bde and 6 Tank Bde
L 7 Add HQ or Engineering Unit: I bought 2 new Engineering Construction Bns
L 8 Change perm restricted HQ to temp restricted: I bought 6 of these and applied them to Air HQs
L 11 Add 50 AV Support to any Base Force on map: I bought 8 of these for various Base Forces
L12 Add 50 ENG units to any Base Force on map: I bought 3 of these for some Independant Eng Units. I also bought 7 of these for some Naval Construction Bns
L 13 Change upgrade path for a land device: Change 70mm gun upgrade to 15cm gun. I also changed the upgrade on my light tanks to upgrade to type 3 Medium Tanks. I also bought upgrade from 8cm gun to 12.7cm guns.
L 15 Change single line of TOE of a single unit: I modified 3 lines on the 65th Bde - infantry will now upgrade; Engineers instead of HMG squads; 7.7mm AA guns are modified to 25mm guns.

Re: The End of Western Imperialism - No Nomads
Very true, but by then he is bombing Japan either way. It will be more costly for him to invade my islands as I will have greater air power there. He was hesitate to attack my island bases in our previous game (Truk, Marshalls, Marianas) and this will make the hesitency higher if I can easily base 400 aircraft at each base.deaniks wrote: Wed May 04, 2022 2:01 pm All the bases are nice but feel having saipain and iwajima higher lever airbase sure will help but once the allies take it they can now support heavy bombers from Iowa jima and can support more from saipain

So turn 1...
For once I had some midget subs not only penetrate into Pearl, but land some torpedoes. I was very surprised by this - I never ever count on the midgets doing anything useful.

I ordered CA Chokai and her lone DD escort into the seas south of Hong Kong to intercept the fleeing DDs from Hong Kong and they ran right into them. After a few rounds of exchanging gunfire and torpedoes my ships landed some good hits on all three enemy ship. DD Thanet and Thracian are both left on fire, with Thracian heavily damaged.
My Pearl Harbor attack was quite successful despite only sending 3 CVs to attack. I concentrated all Vals on the airfield and all Kates on the port and was happy with the results - I even got an afternoon attack in. A lot of planes were damaged but not too many destroyed, but it works. Torpedoes were concentrated on BBs except for 1 CL and a poor PT boat - I think pieces of that PT boat might have landed on the west coast.

My air attacks over Luzon did decent damage - shooting down some fighters and destroying a few planes on the ground. Bombers hit both airfields and ground troops in Luzon paving the way for my landings over the next couple days. I dropped airborne troops at Aparri, Vigan and Laoag capturing them all. I like to do this as it greatly reduces the number of troops lost when unloading on a hostile beach.
Then my air strike on Manila Harbor came in from the other 3 CVs right off the coast. With the lack of capital ships in the harbor I sent 1 Sentai of Vals after the airfield and everything else after the port, knowing that even a 250kg bomb would leave a good dent in whatever they hit. I was very happy with the damage they inflicted. My main target was enemy subs and if the report is correct I hit 19 of them and sunk 7.

Planes from Canton struck Hong Kong harbor damaging 7 xAKs and 2 xAKLs. All but one ship was left burning. Next my planes will begin bombing the troops to soften them up for my invasion in 2 days.
Betties struck at Rangoon port as well sinking 1 HDML and setting 2 xAKs and 2 xAKLs on fire.
My Kates struck at Davao port and landed bombs on 2 xAKL and and AVD - I believe these were 800kg bombs so all three of them should be sunk.
After a few futile air attacks by british planes from Malaya I spotted Nomad's first mistake of the war. He did not order Force Z south and it came north. Luckily I left my Nells and Betties in Thailand on Naval Attack and Force Z was caught with minimal fighter coverage.
It has been many games since I caught Force Z with my naval bombers - usually only happens on a Historic Start. But I am glad - thats two less powerful ships in the SRA to worry about. I lost 1 Betty to flak but landed 5 torpedoes in BC Repulse and 5 into BB Prince of Wales - which was reported sunk.
As soon as the air attack was over and the Repulse was limping back to Singapore she ran into I-154 who put two more torpedoes into her side. The force Z escorts sunk the I-154 but the sinking sounds of Repulse joined her on their way to the bottom.

The flood of escaping allied ships fills the SRA. In ones, twos and multiples, various TFs are fleeing south and west away from the Japanese onslaught.
Malaya:
More troops come ashore at Kota Bharu increasing supplies and troops here. I-155 (off the coast of Malaya) finds the remnants of Force Z and attacks putting a torpedo into DD Express. The remaining DDs converged and heavily damaged the sub who is limping back to Saigon for repairs. I heard sinking noises after the combat giving me the impression that DD Express sank.
Bombers from Thailand concentrate on the defenders at Kota Bharu to soften them up for my planned attack.
My troops at Kota Bharu attack driving the defenders out of the base and capturing it. I can now move in troops and supplies much easier.
Luzon:
After laying mines at Bataan the I-124 stayed there and sunk a fleeing xAKL. Nothing big, but every kill helps.
Allied MTBs showed up at Laoag (No surprise) and my combat TF was waiting. In two individual combats the MTBs did not even fire a single shot, but I sank 4 out of the 8 ships. Cruiser shells really obliterate these small ships.
Zero Sweeps at Manila claim a dozen P-40s with minimal losses on our side.
LBA hits more ground targets - currently concentrating on Tuguegarao - nice open land.
I air dropped some paratroopers at Batan Island capturing the base.
Hong Kong:
I thought I reset my bombers here to go for land targets, but I did not and they hit the port again. They only caught 1 xAK there, but set her aflame with 2 bomb hits.
In a surprise to me most of my Hong Kong invasion forces moved into Hong Kong this turn without triggering an attack. In fact every unit except the Inf Division moved in. I was quite surprised - they were all in Move mode and that could have been bad. The Division is set to arrive next turn and I have scheduled and attack to correspond with its arrival - this time supported by bombers from Canton.
Burma:
LR attacks on Rangoon port sunk another HDML and damaged another 4 merchies.
Near Jolo I-123 locates a lone xAKL and engages it on the surface hitting with 8 main gun shells. No sinking noises, but my guess that ship is toast. The sub saves it torpedoes for better targets.
My CVs in the PI (moving south from Luzon) found and attacked several TFs moving around the various islands. The bombers (Vals and Kates) did a great job basically sinking everything they attack. In all - 1 TK, 2 xAKs, 5 xAKLs were sunk.
In return B-17s from Mindanao (probably Cagayan) attempted a strike on my carriers but were driven off by CAP.

As before, I will be on this AAR frequently. I appreciate that you do it.
The same is true for Nomad's, so no tips either way. Not that either one of you need my advice!

You are very welcome and advice is always appreciated. I do not pretend to have the experience of many on these forums as my last game against Nomad showed with me leaving the SRA completely wide open. Any advice or questions are always welcome.T Rav wrote: Thu May 05, 2022 6:11 pm As before, I will be on this AAR frequently. I appreciate that you do it.

South Pacific:
Invasion TFs arrive at Nauru Island, Ocean Island and Tarawa and unload their troops. In the combat phase all three islands were taken over. The problem is I have spotted a US CV TF about 250 miles east of Kwajalein Island. It probably just 1 US CV but I have nothing in the area to confront it. I have set my bombers to naval attack and am evacuation all ships from the area.
Luzon:
A 2 DD combat TF ran into the 4 allied MTBs near San Fernando and surprised them. In the first round of combat my ships landed 4 shells - one on each enemy ship sinking them !!
B-17s attacked my ships unloading at Vigan and landed a single 500 lb bomb on an xAK setting it on fire. Luckily the ship managed to unload the rest of its troops and I have placed it in port to attempt to put the fires out and save the ship.
More paratroopers landed at Cabanatuan capturing the base and cutting off the retreating unit from Tuguegarao. They also found and destroyed a single B-10B bomber on the airfield.
Malaya:
Not much happening here as more men and supplies are unloaded along the east coast and troops are given orders to begin the long march to Singapore. Additional troops are enroute and more are being loaded at various ports.
Hong Kong:
My troops here attacked lowering the fort, but we repulsed. The Division did not partake in the fight but will this turn. I'm hoping I can take it soon and be able to move those troops elsewhere.
I am preparing a full division and Bde for the invasion of the Rabaul area and moving them to disembarkation points in Japan. I would like to be invading Rabaul in January 1941 and then the solomons - perhaps even Port Moresby. But that will require CVs for protection.

Burma:
Nothing is going on here - it takes forever to march troops here from Bangkok and points farther south and you cannot even think about shipping them in until Singapore (and surrounding area) is pacified.
Borneo:
Troops land at Miri today. They should be enough to take the base this next turn, then either march to Brunei or let another unit ship in to take that base.
Java:
The DD remnants of Force Z approach Batavia where I-165 awaits. She fires 4 torpedoes at DD Electra but misses and gets damaged in return. She will begin the long trek back to Saigon for repairs.
Luzon:
The surviving DDs from Hong Kong are sitting near Iba for some reason. But my naval bombers from Formosa located them and attacked multiple times. Finally on the third or fourth attack a Nell hit DD Scout with a torpedo and reported her sunk.
Troops have come ashore at Naga and should take the base next turn. I paradropped troops in Atimonan and Mauban so troops coming up from the south can close on Manila faster - they won't have to stop and capture these empty bases.
Hong Kong:
The deliberate attack failed to take Hong Kong - the air attacks leading up to the attack did very little damage to the troops here. Once I look at the fatigue/moral of the troops I will decide whether to attack again or rest a day.
Celebes Sea:
MY CVs are moving into here to cut off any retreat and located a small merchant TF fleeing towards Balikpapan. 13 Zeros escorted 22 bombers against the fleet which ended up consisting of 2 xAKs - but were hit with multiple bombs and sunk.
Other than the above not a whole lot took place other than some air attacks in China. In China it looks like a lot of Chinese troops are pulling back - at least the troops in the open terrain. I am trying to organize my units in Manchukuo first and then will send a ton of them into China to begin the long push. I do not want to push to hard / to soon like last time before I can take Lashio and cut off any means of escape unlike last time where most of the Chinese army escaped into Burma and India where they sat for a year growing fat on supplies and reinforcements there.
I do have 24 DDs coming online in 1942 (2 per month) that will need names. I already named like 40+ ships before game start and we just set these to be able to be renamed in game so offer up some names and I'll start naming them. I have 24 DDs in 42 that will need names and then 36 more later in the game.

Day starts out with some naval action in the South China Sea. My Combat TF finds a TF of merchies (xAKLs) fleeing south - most likely from Hong Kong - and hits them all, sinking 2.
Near Soerabaja I-162 misses the AS Holland with a spread of torpedoes - that would have been a nice kill. She makes up for it later in the turn hitting the AVP Heron with a single torpedo - there were sinking noises after the battle.
In the Southern Celebes Sea my carriers find a plethora of targets but due to poor weather in the morning, they only attack during the afternoon phase. Three separate sorties strike at Allied merchants and - to my surprise - a combat TF with 3 CLs and 5 DDs. I think he was moving this up to disrupt invasions of mine in the area, but there are none in the area yet - just my CVs. In total I sunk CL Tromp, DD Evertsen, as well as hitting CL De Ruyter with several bombs and a torpedo. CL Java is hit with only 1 bomb. Another DD (Piet Hein) took two bomb hits.
My other sorties sink 3 xAKLs.
Guam:
My landing force wades ashore under minimal enemy fire.
Hong Kong:
My Shock attack fails to take the base, but does knock the forts down to level 0 and achieve 1 to 1 odds.
Borneo:
My Battalion at Miri captures the base with its customary 50% damage. The refineries will be left alone, and I will begin repairing the Oil in a few days once I bring in engineers to enlarge the port and more supplies.
Victoria Point falls to my Battalion there with a bonus of 3 Blenheim Is.

Very interesting. I follow the AAR with variants and here is a well-described selection. Maybe I'll try it sometimes (when I destroy the deaniks)

Mariannas Islands:
More troops come ashore on Guam beefing up my forces there. I also instructed my warships there to bombard the island in an attempt to disrupt the defenders. The bombardments - and yes I got two - did minor damage to the enemy troops but it was enough as when my men attacked Guam fell to them !!
Makassar Straight:
I am trying to be more aggressive this game since I have extra naval and land reinforcements coming. So I moved Car Div 1 into the Makassar Straight along the eastern edge and right into an allied surface TF. Not only was that bad, but it was the damn Houston
So of course the Houston opens the fight and lands two shells into the Shokaku setting her aflame while my DDs and BBs sat there and watched for a bit. Finally my ships seemed to wake up and return fire. My BBs exchanged fire with the Houston, but all of her shots bounced off my armor, while most of mine penetrated. A few DDs on both sides took some hits as well. Lots of torpedoes were launched, but none hit.

As my CV TF disengaged and moved further south to its targetted hex it ran over an allied sub. Not only was this bad, but it was a Dutch sub with working torpedoes which I discovered as a torpedo slammed into the side of Shokaku
My escorts did not even attack the enemy sub in return.
I was expecting Shokaku to be crippled but she is not that bad off - and should survive as long as we don't run into another sub.
Right after the Dutch sub attacked, I-123 found the CL Boise and put a torpedo into her. Not quite even, but it made the exchange a little better.
As dawn came over the waters aircraft flew from Car Div 1 at the nearby allied TFs. First up was 27 Kates and 16 Vals attacking Balikpapan.. At first I was like "more merchies" but nope, they attack the CL Marblehead and her escorts. Two DDs were hit with a single bomb, while Marblehead was hit by 4 bombs and burning brightly. None of the Kates were carrying torpedoes as one of my CVs is out already.
Next up was 13 Zeros escorting 25 Vals atatcking the Boise TF. Most of the Vals targetted the DD and missed, but one bomb did hit the Boise.
In the afternoon more planes flew and we attacked the Boise TF again, this time with 13 Zeros and 38 Vals. Once more they liked DD Edsall more than the Boise, but we did land 1 bomb on the Edsall and 3 more on the Boise sinking her !!
Then 27 Kates attacked another TF near Bandjermasin sinking all 3 xAKLs there.
Then another strike of 23 Kates attacked the Houston TF near Ternate as it fled. Unfortunately the Houston and her escorts proved quite nimble and only a single bomb hit was scored - luckily it was against the Houston.
Luzon:
With a plethora of escorts in the area and the bulk of the enemy PTs forces already sunk I ordered a bombardment of San Fernando. The barrage was fine, but I think they forgot to target the enemy troops as none were hit.
Allied troops counterattacked at Cabanatuan taking the base back from my paratroopers.
Burma:
My Betties from Bangkok finally attacked one of the fleeing TFs from Singapore heading to India. I have spotted several over the last few days, but the weather has been preventing a lot of air attacks lately. 9 Betties flew and landed two bomb hits on the 3 ships; both the HDML and xAKL were reported sunk.
Hong Kong:
My attack was repulsed at Hong Kong despite the air attacks. My men have a high disruption so I am giving them a day off to recover and will resume the attacks afterwards. The defenders are holding on by a string.
