I've been doing some digging on the MAD gear. It was called Jikitanchiki and it required the equipped aircraft to fly at 30-40' in order to detect a submarine. I'll go out on a limb and say I'll bet the aircrews weren't real fond of using this thing at night! From what I could find it was mounted on the Q1W Lorna, B5N2 Kate, E13A1 Jake, and Ki-49 Helen. It was in service in mid-1944.

I suspect the primary detction tool was the radar, then the MAD gear would come in to use after a sub dived when aproaced by the plane, then a marker bouy would be droped apon pasing then Depth charges, or visa versa. The real efectiveness was in that the planes kept the subs down reducing their efectiveness, the instances I recal from the book(s) I have read showed that the US sub's dectited the enemy planes on radar and were able to dive before they got to them, howeaver their (the sub's) radar was somewhat unreliable, more often than not the Crew spoted the planes in time during the day to dive away in time, at night it was a different matter.

Found a nice article about the depth-charging of the Halibut, mid november 1944 by a combination of MAD equipped AC and A/S vessels:

Is the B-32 in the game? What about potential Japanese 4 engine bombers that were designed and had a few models built.
