A6M3 Zero --> J2M Jack(3/43) --> N1K2 George(11/43)
My only thought is if the Zero 2 goes to Zero 3 and your upgrade goes to Jack and not the Zero 5. I know the Jack is carrier capable, but did they use it on carriers?
Not that I am aware of. However this scenario of mine leans toward the Japanese in the A/C production area much like some of the GG 12'o'Clock High: BTR scenarios did. It is a alternate scenario that asks the "what if?" questions.
That being said, it is logical that if a better land-based fighter is available in 43' that those land-based units would upgrade to it. That is not the case with the stock game upgrade paths.
My thought behind these upgrade paths is that it is the only path that gives the IJN the freedom to upgrade a land based Zero unit to the George or the Jack, which they did. As it stands now the George can only be used when the First unit arrives in late 43'/early 44'. This is ridiculous.
The Jap player, and this is something I would do, would need to exercise some judgement and restraint when he decided what groups to upgrade to what A/C. I personally would never upgrade carrier-based units to the Jack. My Georges, will always be land-based, and
My only fear with this linear upgrade path is that production switches automatically to the newest A/C, and some of these A/C become available very close to each other chronologically speaking. I'm afraid that would actually have the reverse effect, in fact limiting a player's flexibility instead of freeing him to make decisions based on production capability and the merits of the individual aircraft at his disposal.
Of course this scenario would be unpopular amongst the die-hard "History was this way, and so shall be ALL my games of WitP" Allied players. That's fine. I just won't play those people, and they don't have to use this scenario. The fact is I am creating this scenario for my own use anyway vs. the AI, but if I ever found an opponent willing to try a different game I wouldn't hesitate to PBEM.
Unfortunately, playtesting this scenario is difficult because the crunch doesn't come unitl the end of the game. What really needs to be done is have the Auto-production change patched to be a toggle. That way scenarios such as this one, Tanaka's, and Lemur's can be fully implemented.
