I made some clarifying remarks on the honor rules in the first post. Also removed the British Empire Activation Trigger for attacking Shanghai. Shanghai is a Chinese base and may be attacked by the Japanese without any problems.
Dateline Pearl Harbor:
DEPTH CHARGE SCANDAL ROCKS NAVY DEPARTMENT!!!!!!!!!!!!!
We have already pointed out the lack of readiness of the Navy to fight a war that was clearly 4 years in the making. But we have just learned that none of the US Navy's destroyers were configured for Anti-Submarine Warfare at the beginning of the War. In fact when the Battlefleet sortied their destroyer escorts had not yet had time to be retrofitted for ASW operations. There is talk of a Senate inquiry into this latest scandal.
The war heated up again today as Submarine R-7 reported a successful attack on a Jap Destroyer near Wake (This is the second successful attack by R-7 in two days).
Davao has come under heavy naval bombardment from cruisers and battleships from the Imperial Navy.
And in a surprise move that Navy planners did not think would come this early in the war. Japanese ground forces have landed on Canton Island. This critical island lies astride the convoy routes to Australia and our possessions in the South Pacific. The issue is still in doubt, but there are only a handful of subs operating in the area.
The Japanese secured the Manchurian town of Changchung as they increase their military dominance of Manchuria.

Dateline Pearl Harbor:
DEPTH CHARGE SCANDAL GROWS!!!!
The brewing controversy over the lack of preparation to escort convoys and fight off the submarine menance grows today. Two Bird class minesweepers, the only vessels currently capable of prosecuting attacks against submarines were sunk today near Midway. Yesterday a third minesweeper was heavily damaged by a sub and in all probability will not make port.
With the effectiveness of the UBoat during the Great War, one wonders why the US Navy has not invested more in developing their anti-submarine technology. Why none of the destroyers in the fleet were equiped with depth charges? These questions will be brought before a full Senate inquiry.
Meanwhile on Mindanao the town of Dadanjas fell and there was heavy fighting at Clark. Initial indications is that our gunnery is much more effective than the Japs and inflicted heavy casaulties on them.
The British Empire made a statement that convoy K-102 has entered into the War zone and is 5 or 6 days out from Hong Kong. They are warning off all combatants. The convoy is carrying reinforcements and supplies to Hong Kong. It is one of two convoys that will reinforce the Crown Colony.

Actually you keep fighting mostly cavalry units. They are soft.
Who knows may be horses are also included in combat report [:D]

Dateline Manila:
The tempo of operations has really slowed down. Admiral Carpender and his TF have been operating from Indo-China but have not been able to engage the enemy for the past several days. Admiral Carpender stated that the utmost priority is to preserve his task force as a deterent in the South China Sea. So he needs to pick his battles carefully. Already he has lost 7 destroyers with 2 cruisers and 2 destroyers heavily damaged and undergoing lengthy repairs.
The bombardments at Davao continue, obviously in preparation for some sort of landing.
US Submarines operating in the Wake Island vicinity report spotting seaplanes patrolling the area. This indicates that some heavy units have moved into the area.
There have been numerous sightings of Japanese subs between Midway to Pearl, obviously an advance screen. They have sunk 3 Minesweepers in the past 3 days. Putting into question the US Navy's prewar ASW doctrine and readiness. Senate inquiries into the scandal are scheduled to begin next week.
The battle for Clark rages on. So far it has been an artillery duel and the US is inflicting far more casualties on the enemy. Apparently the Japanese Heavy infantry has not yet moved up and we are engaging cavalry forces at Clark. If this is so, then where is the heavy infantry and artillery? It also appears that Japanese forces have advanced to the outskirts of Manila.

DEPTH CHARGE SCANDAL GROWS ADMIRAL RESIGNS!!!!!!!!!
The growing scandal reached new heights today as it was announced that the Battleship California was torpedoed by a Jap sub West of Pearl Harbor. Admiral Green, in charge of the Navy's ASW Dept has resigned in disgrace. It was his policy to not keep the Navy's Destroyers equiped with depth charges and other ASW gear during peacetime. This was a "cost-saving" measure which has proven to be a mistake. So far 3 minesweepers have been sunk and the Battleship California heavily damaged.
The quick pace of advance and early fall of Wake Island forced Battlefleet to sortie to protect Pearl Harbor, but without many of the destroyers that would escrort and provide ASW coverage.
Scouting subs have every indication of an enemy buildup occuring at Wake Island. This could be the precursor to a major fleet action at Midway or perhaps at Pearl Harbor itself.
Meanwhile in Manchuria the Japanese Armored Car Squadrons continue their advance. The towns of Arshaan, Mishan, and Harbin fell today. Armed forces from the Republic of China are gathering near Peking to mount an offensive.
In the Philippines Japanese forces bombarded Manila with little effect, while a major attack was launched at Clark Airfield. The Japanese forces were thrown back with heavy casualties.
In other news the British Empire announced today that it would be moving the 23rd Indian Division to Hong Kong to reinforce the garrison there. The convoy will be leaving from India within the week.

MAJOR SEA ACTION WAKE - WAKE ISLAND REVENGED!!!
Navy officials today informed the public that Battlecruiser Division 1 with accompanying cruisers and destroyers made a night sortie into Wake Island. The Division commanded by Capt Hynes of the Saratoga was going to attack the base and determine if major naval units were present. The mission to bombard Wake was aborted when Capt Hynes encountered a light cruiser squadron with 3 light cruisers and 3 destroyers. On the run in, the Cincinnati was torpedoed, but still able to participate in the battle. 2 of the 3 destroyers were sunk and 2 of the 3 light cruisers heavily damaged with numerous gun hits and at least 1 torpedo hit each. The USS Hazelwood was sunk, but otherwise the US forces had minimal damage.
A Jap Battlecruiser Division bombarded Camranh Bay sinking several patrol boats and inflicting damage on the port facilities.
Heavy fighting continued at Clark Field, but US and Philippino forces repulsed the attacks causing significant casualties to the enemy.
The expected landing at Davao took place and the Philippine Division was able to repulse the initial attack. They are heavily outnumbered and not expected to last long.

ANOTHER RESIGNATION AS DEPTH CHARGE SCANDAL GROWS!!!!
There has been another resignation as this scandal grows in proportion. Capt Tankerace[:D], head of the ASW Inspector Dept has submitted his resignation today. Apparently it was his recommendation to keep the Navy's destroyers disarmed during peacetime. It was thought that the Bird class Minesweepers would provide enough ASW coverage until destroyers could be upgraded with their ASW equipment. This premise has proven not to be the case. 4 Bird class Minesweepers have been sunk in as many days and another was torpedoed recently and may not make port.
In other news battles continue to rage in both Manila and Clark, but US and Philippino forces have held their positions throwing back the Jap suicide attacks.
The town of Davao on Mindanao fell yesterday and the Philippino and US forces have withdrawn to the countryside to fight a guerilla campaign.

Dateline Manila:
MAJOR BATTLE CLARK!!!!
The Japs have been heavily reinforcing their attack on Clark. There are now 90,000+ Japanese assaulting the Allied forces in Clark. Today was the most intense day of battles and Japanse combat engineers actually managed to reduce the extensive fortifications at Clark. It is unclear how much longer the Allied forces can hold their positions.
War Plan Orange calls for US forces to fall back into the Bataan Peninsula, however there is considerable discussion about trying to hold Manila.
There continued to be sporadic fighting and artillery exchanges in the city of Manila.
The Cruiser Division of the Asiatic Fleet made a raid on Batan Island again today. They engaged 5 Jap destroyers on ASW duty, sinking 1 destroyer and heavily damaging another. There is considerable discussion on the future base for the Asiatic fleet. The Japanese have been making bombardment attacks on Indo-Chinese ports and their carriers are scouting the coastline. A Jap cruiser squadron caught up to and sank three US minesweepers near Saigon. Things are getting hot for the Asiatic fleet.
The US Army Air Corps launched a heavy air attack on Jap transports in the port of Naga. All three ships were set on fire. One wonders what the results could have been if we had a long range bomber that could carry bombs heavier than 100lbs.
Another Bird class minesweeper sank today, making it the 5th ship in as many days lost to Jap subs while conducting ASW operations. US navy officials have decided to change strategies and pull these vulnerable vessels from dedicated ASW operations and make them escorts only.

Japanese reinforcements continue to move into both Clark and Manila. Furious fighting occured in Clark today and the Allies were again able to throw back the Japs with heavy losses. However, our losses are starting to mount as well. The question comes to down to whether the Army should fall back on Bataan or Manila.
The Japs captured Tsitsihar another Manchurian town today. Some Republic of China forces have massed at Peking and some sort of counter-offensive is promised.
US forces on Canton Island have been in a stand-off with the Japanese forces on the West end of the island. But US subs patrolling in the area put a torpedo into a Jap transport and it appears that Japan is reinforcing their invasion.

Dateline Pearl Harbor:
JAP SUBS IN PEARL HARBOR REEK HAVOC!
The Japanese struck a blow at the very heart of the US Pacific Fleet by entering Pearl Harbor and laying a minefield and torpedoing several warships. The hapless USS McLanahan fresh off their ASW retrofit in Mare Island arrived at Pearl today; promptly struck a mine and then while limping into harbor was struck by 2 torpedoes. The destroyer suffered a magazine exposion and sank with all hands within 30 seconds. The cruiser Missoula was also struck by a torpedo and has had to be put in dry dock.
So far the Japanese sub force has sunk 6 minesweepers, several destroyers, and put torpedoes into 2 cruisers and a battleship. Clearly the navy has been caught flat-footed with their total lack of preparation to counter these threats. There is even talk in some circles of pulling the Battlefleet back to the West Coast until an appropriate solution is found.
Heavy fighting continued at Clark and Manila. At Clark the Japanese continue to be reinforced and continued their relentless attacks. They overwelming the defenders through shear numbers. There was a major attack at Manila as well, but it was repulsed with heavy losses to the Japanese.
Meanwhile at the strategic island of Canton. Cruiser Squadron 34 encountered and destroyed 2 Jap transports apparently trying to reinforce their troops on the island. There are still an estimated 4000 Jap troops on the island. It is hoped that the small Marine contingent can protect the port and airbase until reinforcements can be sent. It is not known when that will happen however.

Dateline Manila:
CLARK FALLS!!!!!
In a massive assault consisting of over 130,000 men the Japanese overran our defenses in Clark and forced the units there to retreat to Bataan. There had been talk about falling back on Manila with the Army and making a final stand there. However, Clark was expected to hold for another couple of days. This puts US forces in the Philippines in a bad situation. Manila and Bataan are cut off from each other. There is a significant stockpile of supplies in both locations but Bataan is better suited for an extended defense. Without the supply route to Bataan, Manila could quickly go through their stockpile of supplies.
Lamon Bay also fell to the Japanese but it was only lightly defended by local police forces.
In Manchuria the Republic of China has gone on the offensive and recaptured the town of Jehol.

This situation in Manila is getting desperate as Jap forces from Clark move down to reinforce the attack.
A Jap cruiser squadron attacks Camrahn Bay sinking several coastal patrol boats.
The 7th Bird Minesweeper falls victim to Jap torpedoes.
The Jap minefield in Pearl continues to pose problems as it heavily damages a destroyer sweeping the field.
The Manchurian town of Heiho falls to the Japs.
Well I am off for 4 days and turns will be very sporadic. Hope all have a very Merry Christmas

Jap subs continue to prowl off the coast of Hawaii and seemingly the US Navy is helpless to oppose their depredations. Another (the 10) Minesweeper is torpedoed at Midway. The Navy has rejected the resignation of Capt TankerAce[:D], the former Inspector General of the ASW Department. They are drawing up charges for a court marshal scheduled to begin within the next month.
Artillery is exchanged at Manila as that seems to be the main target of Japanese forces in the Philippines.

Dateline Shanghai:
CHINESE FLEET WIPED OUT!!!!!!
The small out-gunned fleet of the fledgling Republic of China was all but destroyed today in a major battle near Batan Island. The Chinese Squadron ran into a Jap Surface Combat Group that contained at least 2 Battleships and 2 Cruisers. To date the Chinese squadron had given good account of themselves, however, their old ships were no match for the Jap Squadron.
This is not good news for the Allied cause. The Chinese Squadron was an important supplement for the Asiatic Fleet. Its destruction has all but assured the Japs control of the South China Sea. It complicates Admiral Carpenders job of trying to tie up as many Jap forces as possible protecting the sea routes to the Philippines and Manchuria.
The Republic of China faces numerous obstacles to its security. An exposed coastline and a large Jap buildup in Manchuria as well as the fragmented government structures will probably prevent any meaningful attempt to recapture their Manchurian provinces.
In other news Capt TankerAce was brought up on charges of dereliction of duty for his policies on the Navy's pre-war ASW stance. It is thought that if proven guilty he will loose several ranks and be cashiered.

Dateline Pearl Harbor:
DISASTER AT MIDWAY!!!
The main battlefleet sortied from Pearl Harbor in an attempt to catch the Jap fleet at Wake Island unawares and disrupt their plans. A navigational error caused the main fleet to be some 60 miles from Wake on the 28th. The main fleet was spotted by Jap subs and aircraft. The Jap fleet was able to escape. The fleet commander decided to go ahead and bombard Wake. The main fleet inflicted heavy casaulties at Wake, however, the primary goal of a pre-emptive strike failed and in addition the Battleship Missippi was torpedoed.
But at Midway a Jap cruiser squadron raided the port and inflicted the worst defeat in US Naval history. 4 minesweepers, 2 destroyers, and 2 cargo ships were sunk. 3 tankers were set afire. This could have serious ramifications on the the US's ability to use Midway as a base.
Meanwhile in the South China Sea, 3 surviving cruisers from yesterdays battle were hunted down and sunk by the Jap fleet.

MANILA FALLS!!!!!
In a major battle at Manila the Imperial Army was able to overwhelm the forces defening Manila, causing a general surrender in the city. Now Bataan is the only holdout on Luzon. The last American outpost of freedom.
In other news, Battleships of the Imperial Japanese Navy bombarded Midway inflicting heavy damage and causing significant casualties. This raid occurs one day after a Jap light cruiser squadron raided the port sinking many ships.
There is a general call for a review of the war. Both the Army and the Navy have been found lacking in readiness. TWar Plan Orange has proven to be a paper shell without any teeth. Already one officer has been court marshaled. Capt TankerAce formerly of the ASW Dept has been reduced in rank to LT and retired from the Naval Service. It was his policies and budgetary cuts which left the US Navy's ASW program in disarray at the beginning of the war. More courts marshals may follow. There are many serious questions around the size fo the garrison in the PI, the basing of the Battlefleet and the state of the base at Pearl Harbor.
