Hi Nick what did you do with the UK carriers

Ive tried various things but there is some sort of hard coding about the carriers that keeps putting planes in reserve when you "overload" the carriers ie anything over 36!

it would be nice to see Indominable with hurricanes and martlets in early 42.

Well let me explain before Speedy starts jumping for joy all over my incompetence.

1) China....since it was an AI test game i'm more willing to wing it and take chances just to see what happens. My average turn-time also tends to be much faster too to move the game along. When i saw those 20 units enter Yennen, had it been an PBEM i would have sit tight....since it was the AI i just said "what the heck BANZAI!" lol......well i saw what happened. Update....having taken Inching, my Army group is back but so far no joy despite 0 fort levels.....however i'd say 100,000+ Chinese invested in the city is better than 9 fort levels....my 300,000 Japanese have so far not been able to eject them.

2.) carriers - Playing on hard level...the AI peeks at your forces.....result was every time KB would come out...the AI USN carriers would run away....litterally. well the last time i went home (Truk) and they came back out , AI got real bold this time and got within 400 miles of Rabaul....beat off an attack....this time i opted to send just 3 CV + a CVL at full speed from Truk to see if the AI would stick around...this time it sort of did.....got my carrier battle....against superior odds and got butt whipped.....Shokaku and Shoho sunk, Zuikaku crippled and Hiryu damaged in return for two or three damaged USN carriers.

Here's where i got really cocky.....eager for revenge, i sent off Akagi, Kaga, and Soryu on another full speed chase for revenge hoping to catch damaged carriers....chased the AI all the way down to Nomeau....only to find at least 2 fully intact US carriers...which Midway'd me along with 60 B-26's. I suffered an agrevatingly large number of belt armor hits when my own forces counterattacked....(equiv to near misses when they don't penetrate) and only a couple torp hits....result, no USN carriers sunk...just damaged.....all my carriers sunk. lol.....in one week, KB is shattered......only Junyo and Rhyujo are intact, Hiryu and Zuikaku will be in the shipyards for some time and my offensive has stopped with the taking of Port Morosby. Thorougly the most enjoyable AI experience i've had yet. Next time i'll be a little more careful......uber-CAP? not any longer!

Upgrade - I'm afraid that would require a code change. sorry. I'm trying to make the next version as comprehensive as possible.

Increased their capacity and am working to put their actual squadron and plane types on as close to the starting date for the scenario as possible. Of course there's conflicting data on squadron numbers and exact loadout. Shores differs in places from a good Fleet air arm archive available online in some places. I'm not going to sweat the squadron numbers so much nor whether or not one squadron which has 24 torp planes should in fact be two 12 plane squadrons....i mean i'm all for accuracy but this just wont impact the game and i don't want to have to create too many new squadrons using the limited slots available.

Indomitable has Sea Hurricanes now......The Martlet and Albacore have been added.

No more Sea Gladiators.

Hard coding - I think i figured out a way to get around that.....working so far in tests.

Hi all,

Probably the last update until after Christmas. I'm away from the 22nd until 30th December. Merry Christmas to the readers and your families [8D]

2 days of mixed fortunes.

The positive - Singapore will fall within days. With tactical support from the IJA my men some inrodes into the fortifications over the 2 days and took out a similar number of enemy men as I lost:

Ground combat at Singapore

Japanese Deliberate attack

Attacking force 121532 troops, 1098 guns, 429 vehicles

Defending force 70491 troops, 462 guns, 26 vehicles

Japanese engineers reduce fortifications to 6

Japanese assault odds: 2 to 1 (fort level 6)

Japanese Assault reduces fortifications to 6

Japanese ground losses:
2358 casualties reported
Guns lost 62
Vehicles lost 6

Allied ground losses:
1400 casualties reported
Guns lost 53

AND:

Ground combat at Singapore

Japanese Deliberate attack

Attacking force 118050 troops, 1002 guns, 423 vehicles

Defending force 68165 troops, 388 guns, 25 vehicles

Japanese assault odds: 1 to 1 (fort level 6)

Japanese Assault reduces fortifications to 5

Japanese ground losses:
1485 casualties reported
Guns lost 51
Vehicles lost 7

Allied ground losses:
1762 casualties reported
Guns lost 39
Vehicles lost 2

Also the last enemy bastion on Mindanao fell on the 21st at Cotabato:

Ground combat at Cotabato

Japanese Deliberate attack

Attacking force 2918 troops, 17 guns, 0 vehicles

Defending force 4104 troops, 26 guns, 12 vehicles

Japanese assault odds: 2 to 1 (fort level 0)

Japanese forces CAPTURE Cotabato base !!!

Japanese ground losses:
120 casualties reported
Guns lost 3

Allied ground losses:
4964 casualties reported
Guns lost 31
Vehicles lost 2

The negative. BLOODY AVG. Over the 2 days AVG gits swept over the skies at Pagan. Zero's from Rangoon were CAP'ing the place and got wiped out losing 14 vs 1 P40 over the 2 days! Nerfed Zero's i'm thinking. These boys weren't rookies all ranging from 70-85 EXP. At least they were [;)][:D]

-----------------------

Air losses:

Allied: 3
Japanese: 28 (18 Zero's in total!) [X(]

Just goes to show what happens when yon P-40's aren't flying in a landing pattern or just taking off as they all were along with the Hurricanes and Buffalos during the SRA campaign.

holiday war movie - Battle of the Coral Sea

Post by Nikademus »

well, while we're all waiting for Speedy to get his butt back from Spain....figured i'd post the results of a current 5.0 42a mod AI game (me Allies) just to keep things interesting. May 29 marks the first carrier on carrier clash between the Kido Butai and the USN carrier force.

The battle came as a total suprise to me as previously there'd been little sign of the KB other than one brief appearance by a 3 CV group NE of Buin which quickly retreated after getting bloodied against Port Morosby's air defences. For my own operations, I'd decided to help thwart Japanese ambitions to isolate PM by re-taking Gili Gili....held by a single SNLF force which my B-17's had been making life difficult for.

Two TF's constituting four CV's were escorting the 14th NZ brigade to Gili Gili when a four CV + at least one CVL appeared in the Coral Sea, bombing PM for damage but losing many planes in the process. Given those losses i opted to continue the operation since the odds appeared reletively even. A major series of exchanges resulted. I made a tactical error in devoting most of my fighter resources to fleet defence...which resulted in the KB Zero CAP getting some major licks at my carrier strikes. The SBD's held up well despite being surrounded by mass Zero attacks...the unarmored Devestators suffered more...but despite the losses, we succeeded in badly damaging at least two big Japanese CVs.

Dusk falls.....i've decided not to retreat.....we are within 120 miles of Gili Gili. I hold a tactical advantage due to the proximity of PM....and all my marooned bombers were able to make it there minimizing losses. I have also transfered additional LB assets there and hope to catch the crippled Japanese CV's the next day. The bad news is that Hornet sank immediately and Enterprise is crippled at 91% FLT. I don't expect her to survive as she is also burning furiously. Lexington and Yorktown are intact and ready for tommorrow.

Well.....day 2 turned not quite as I'd hoped. (translation - disaster!)

Unfortunately Rabaul upset the apple cart. The base had recently suffered some good losses and had been quiet which lulled me into thinking it was not particularily strong. I was wrong. [:@]
