IJN TF clearing Ponape minefield is back! But the destroyer line-up is different. There must be 4-6 escorts covering MSWs.
IJN finally decides to show up in Iwo Jima, but rather than a surface TF - and I was so hoping to surprise them with my 5 BBs - it's a sub. Time to retreat in orderly fashion. NOW.

Stalemate @ Iwo Jima. My infantry and engineers are too few to push IJA back into the sea; and IJA with its 3 engineer regiments and a base force provides excellent defensive formation but can't attack to save its life.
Tomorrow will be the swan song of USN battleships as 5 old hulks - Oregon, Connecticut, Georgia and 2 others - charge into sub-infested waters of Iwo Jima, hoping to take at least 10 transports with them.
Heck, maybe even Hosho will show up - it was a hex northwest yesterday but nowhere to be seen today.

Iwo Jima, 12/21/1922
IJN: at least 3 submarines, potentially CV Hosho, at least 10-20 transports, mostly if not all APs - they were able to unload 8,000 men in a single turn. Having lost 45DDs to date, IJN is almost certainly involved in mass-conversions, meaning that there are simply no spare AKs available to carry out an invasion.
USN: 5BB 4PC within striking range; AE a bit behind to rearm BBs; up to 10 subs are approaching but it will take at least a week for them to arrive - the closest one by Tori Shima is S-34 with empty fuel tanks and only 4 torpedoes =(
Banzai!!!

RE: Hail to the blimps
It's funny how WPO allows so many conversions whereas British were truly disappointed with their Q-ships by 1917...
True, the British were disappointed, but I wanted the players to have a choice. Beyond that, if players do too many conversions, then moving troops is going to be an issue later on. Transports are smaller than in WitP, and nowhere near as numerous. If players want to be gamey and build a ton of "10k minefield creators", then they in effect force themselves on the defensive, as they won't have enough shipping to create effective supply convoys and mount sustained heavy offensive invasions. It's all a trade off.

I think he may be refering to the time limit on the game. The scenario is only 1.5 years long.

Manila and Bataan are 2100 each. So if I take them tomorrow I'm up to 6400 but Wayne still has 7000-some VPs. I think the biggest mistake this game was not adjusting the initial VPs for home islands - Tokyo alone is 3600VPs in the Japanese account. Add on top of that VPs for expanded airfields and ports, and we have a problem. In a 4-year scenario Americans would have had the time to take those nice built up facilities and rake up the points... I don't have such luxury.
I think I'm going to have to go for Tokyo, which is a suicide...

I disagree - partially. Even in Cautionaries, a scenario that intentionally ties up a large chunk of Japanese fleet, there is more than enough shipping potential - for Japan. In another game I sent every single eligible AK I had to be converted - and I'm still fine! Once the bulk of IJA is on PI, you don't need those transports anymore...
Of course on the other hand USN can't afford that, and I spent many painful hours deciding what to do... Feeding a bunch of dreadnoughts with 12 tankers is not fun.

RE: Hail to the blimps
Naval attack - for all but Curtises and Blimps.
Of course, what you don't see is horrific ops losses - 21 plane despite appropriate support and airfield coverage - and meek results most of the days. I am lucky if I can achieve what you see below once a month.

Or just Tokyo: +9000 Allied VP, -3600 Japanese VP.
Do you guys think I should just send all I can to Home Islands? As you're about to see, even Kwajalein is impregnable...

December 22, 1922
An absolutely miserable day.
13 MSWs sink without taking a single shot from a Japanese ship or any mine hits. How am I supposed to take fortresses like Kwajalein? Hit'em where they ain't, said MacArthur... I guess I have to.
The Japanese transport armada vanishes from Iwo Jima just before my ships get there - and even when they do, they choose to relax most of the day, not firing a shot. Right as Japanese keep unloading right next to them.
My destroyers seem to be extremely experienced only dealing with submarines. Night combat, 2000 yards, and all I get is *one* torpedo hit? And that's with surprise on my side during the second battle?
IJA seems to be able to unload without being forced to shock attack - ahem, where was that ability when I landed at Jaluit?
Daily losses: IJN: 3DD USN: 4DD with a few more going down imminently, 13 MSW.

December 23, 1922
Still no light at the end of the tunnel.
All IJN surface ships disappeared from Iwo Jima, but subs came back. It's time for my pre-dreadnoughts to run.
A DD is lost and 5 transports; better than yesterday - the total losses were 6 DDs to 3 Japanese ones.
At this pace I will be forced to convert even more AKs to CLs. What does that mean? There is going to be only one Allied push: August-November, straight to Tokyo...

I am not hoping to win this game anymore. But I am determined to make the remaining 11 months very painful for Wayne

Or just Tokyo: +9000 Allied VP, -3600 Japanese VP.
Do you guys think I should just send all I can to Home Islands? As you're about to see, even Kwajalein is impregnable...
[:(] I'm playing as US, and it's sad to hear you (and I) can't win the war no matter what...
Attacking Home Islands is a suicide.. very far from any friendly big port, so every damaged ship will probably sink, good infrastructure means fast troops movement to contrast your landing and infinite supply for him, huge coastal defense guns and...
Go for PI, you will get lot of points if you will be able to make his troops to surrender! And skip Kwajalein, it doesn't worth all the casualties you'll suffer taking it...
Try to blockade it with your mighty submarines... maybe you won't completely shut it down, but your opponent will risk to take 1 or more torpedo hits for every convoy that sails in or out!

RE: Scoreboard 12/15/1922
I really like this scenario. But the timeframe may be to short. Given time the US can win. It just is not going to be a blitzkrieg in the Pacific:-)
Somehow recapturing the Philippines and inflicting significant damage on the Japanese fleet - essentially blockading Japan should equal a US victory.

You have to remember that this scenario is still being tested. Even after several months of work there are still areas that haven't been touched! It's finally to the point (in upcoming 1.7) that military OOBs are perfect - but there are still auxiliaries, ground forces...
Remember, Japan has a tremendous advantage in Cautionaries - they have to fight only 1-front war. In every stock campaign I kibitz IJN is struggling from day one as it has to deal with Chinese and DEI port-based Allied ships. Not here.
And sigh... we'll see. I got 19 days before I have to DECIDE - 1.2 that I'm playing still has that horde of ships coming online 1/15. They've been spread out in 1.6+.

Mm.
Just zero out all those Home Island base values, set current port sizes so that they can't be upgraded (e.g. 4(9) becoming 4(1) etc), and players will have to fight rather than build.
