In regards to the forum eating posts, can't you just go 'Back' in your browser and the post is there? That's what I do when the connection times out or it has that error, and I get all my letters back.

Not for me. [:(] I use Chrome and I just get back to a blank form again without text.

I've done what Lokasenna says a few times in IE. Usually works. Chrome has flaws too.

For my AAR I've trained myself to copy the text to the clipboard before I hit "post." If it crashes I open Notepad, paste it to hold it, close down IE, and start fresh. A pain, but this forum eats messages more than any I've ever used. Gotten a lot worse in the last year too.

I use Notepad++ to write my AAR post as I do the turn. I keep a template so I can just drop in any bases captures or amphibious ops. When ready I spell-check the post, then just cut and paste. if the forum eats it, I just cut and paste it again. I added a small twist, since the forum ate 24 to 48 hours of posts, I keep a few turns worth of psts before I delete them.

I usually copies the text as well. But from time to time I forgot. And that always happens when it crashes. [:(]

witqs, I use a lot of the color stuff and things. So its a bit hard to template. I did write the text separately at a time but it was too fiddly to be worth it as formatting the text can take up to 10-15 minutes sometimes with colors and stuff. So I would still need to copy it! [:D]

But it's easy to template the colors - look at my screen cap above.

What I did was write a post in the forum message editor, then after I had it correct I edited the post and copied the code into my text file. Voila! I then had all the right color codes for my template.

Care to post a how-to, witpqs (edit: on "templating" the colors/formatting, I mean)? Or do you just have a blank skeleton post sitting around? I'd forgotten about Notepad++, as I haven't done any coding for a couple of years.

I use Firefox. It's never lost a post here. I actually hate it when sites go nuclear with security and forms because it prevents the browser from retaining the information after I push 'submit', and if the connection hangs (seemingly common on such sites) I have to do it all over again.

Luckily this was a quiet turn. I have enough of unexpected action!

------------------------
Thailand
------------------------

Erik small parasquad will be killed tomorrow. I hope it gets destroyed and don´t retreat out on the rail. For good measure I ordered a shock attack.

The armored spearhead has recovered nicely. 500 Heavy tanks are ready to go as soon as the AA arrives in a couple of days. They will be covered by one of the brutal 72x 3,7inch guns units. I actually hope Eriks tries again.

------------------------
DEI
------------------------

Makassar is easily secured. The division split up and 2/3rds head north to secure more bases on the Celebes.

------------------------
Luzon
------------------------

Troops will enter Manila tomorrow. I´m guessing 3400 AV. Anything below that will be a bonus. I´m quite interested to see what kind of results I can get by the loads or arty tubes arriving shortly. And the 1000 Shermans too of course. Once I break out of Manila its going to be a slaughter on the retreating troops.

------------------------
CENTPAC
------------------------

Reinforcements leave Wake for the Marianas. This is mostly ships, supply and fuel. About 2,5 million supply and 400.000 fuel. I think this will be the last big convoy I´ll send. The supply chain should be up and running very shortly.

------------------------
VPs
------------------------

I opened up the VP tab and it looks we are heading in the right direction. Since we passed the 1:1 mark things are accelerating.

Sure - no coding required. In fact it saves me time on editing my AAR posts because it always has the same colors and sections I use at the top. The rest of my AAR is just free form (I do use the forum markup for things like quoting combat reports, I think it makes it easier to read the AAR).

Start writing a post (using the forums reply, I mean). Write it the way you want it - colors, making dates bold, or whatever you want it to look like. Once you have it the way you want it, just select everything (control-A will do that), and copy it (control-C). Now open up a new text file on your PC. Paste everything inside it (control-V). Save the file (control-S usually). Now you can delete the part that is meant only for a specific post, leaving only the stuff that you need for the next post (tomorrow's post!).

Skip back up in this thread and look at the pic I posted. That is the skeleton ready to go for my next AAR post. What I do is this:
1) open (using Notepad++, which is pictured) the template for that day;
2) write in the entry as I process the turn, saving periodically;
3) when done, spell check and save;
4) copy everything (control-A then control-C);
5) go to the forum and 'reply' to my AAR thread, paste in everything (control-V), upload the pic to embed (I include a pic with each turn's AAR post) and submit the post;
6) go back to Notepad++ and do a 'save as' (I use the menu) to save as the next turn's date;
7) change the date to reflect the next turn;
8) delete whatever was for the turn just finished, leaving only the skeleton for the next turn;
9) save the file (control-S), and exit.

Obviously I could show this in fewer steps, I just want to be clear. It's very easy, and overall it takes less typing and time than entering all the formatting into the forum post each time.

BTW, I only save the posts temporarily on my hard drive to guard against another forum data loss. I keep a few days back, once in a while deleting any older than that.

Edit to add: You don't need Notepad++, any text editor will do. The default Windows Notepad works just fine. I've simply found Notepad++ to be a better editor. For example, I open up the combat, operations, and events reports in separate tabs. That makes it really easy to cut and paste combats and whatnot into the AAR post.

Extremely quiet turn. Not a single air mission besides recon and naval search.

------------------------
Thailand
------------------------

The shock attack works fine an obliterates the paras.
Ground combat at Ayuthia (56,61)

Allied Shock attack

Attacking force 10662 troops, 202 guns, 109 vehicles, Assault Value = 449

Defending force 359 troops, 1 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 25

Allied adjusted assault: 850

Japanese adjusted defense: 1

Allied assault odds: 850 to 1 (fort level 0)

Allied forces CAPTURE Ayuthia !!!

Combat modifiers
Defender:
Attacker: shock(+), leaders(+)

Japanese ground losses:
520 casualties reported
Squads: 26 destroyed, 0 disabled
Non Combat: 2 destroyed, 0 disabled
Engineers: 0 destroyed, 0 disabled
Guns lost 1 (1 destroyed, 0 disabled)
Units destroyed 1
[&o]

Allied ground losses:
11 casualties reported
Squads: 0 destroyed, 1 disabled
Non Combat: 0 destroyed, 0 disabled
Engineers: 0 destroyed, 1 disabled

Assaulting units:
18th British Division

Defending units:
2nd Raiding Rgt /1

With the troops that headed north arriving back to the superstack the bombardments are really starting to show good results again. But some of the allied troops will continue south to take part on the assault on Indochina.
Ground combat at 55,59 (near Tavoy)

Allied Bombardment attack

Attacking force 5547 troops, 348 guns, 384 vehicles, Assault Value = 3927

Defending force 165074 troops, 1952 guns, 2846 vehicles, Assault Value = 3526

Japanese ground losses:
411 casualties reported
Squads: 2 destroyed, 26 disabled
Non Combat: 0 destroyed, 3 disabled
Engineers: 0 destroyed, 2 disabled
Vehicles lost 5 (2 destroyed, 3 disabled)

------------------------
Luzon
------------------------

The barges containing the fragments of the previously shipped in troops are starting to arrive. Other than that not much happening.

The supply situation has stabilized enough for me to start repairing the oil I have captured. Supply is hovering around 1 million at Cotabato and Iloilo. With another 2,5 million arriving mid January this won´t be an issue anymore. Fuel is still a bit of a concern. But I have enough to sorti the whole fleet on an excursion or two. Another 700.000 fuel is arriving in a few weeks and with local fuel we should be fine. I might start moving the 800.000 fuel at Noumea forward again. Just for the sake of it.

------------------------
Even more toys!
------------------------

Randolph will join Bennington and head for PH when their DD escort arrives in a couple of days. There they will wait for Bunker Hill and Illustrious that should be ready in about 30 days.

This will be a nice addition to the fleet in late January. Another 300 planes will be welcome and add a lot more punch.

CV squadrons resize
______________________________________________________________________________

So, in just 9 days or so I will have serious reorganization of my CV squadron setup. The DBs will resize down from 36 to 15 planes and the TBs from 18 to 15.

This is done to accommodate an additional fighter squadron aboard the CVs of 36 Corsairs. So all my CVs will basically resize and become extremely fighter heavy. The thing is...I´m not so sure I want that?

I still have a decisive naval battle against the KB coming up. I´m not sure I want to lessen my strike capabilities with 50% in favor of a stronger CAP. The newly arriving squadrons also arrive at just 50% strenght and it will take at least 2 months to fill them out as my pools are completely dry of the F4U-1D.

Doing the resize would basically cut my strike planes from 580 DB/TBs to just 290. I´m not sure adding more CAP is going to make such a big difference. I already have a good number of Fighters with roughly 700 fighters or so. Thats already a sizable CAP of some 300 Corsairs.

In light of this. What do you guys think I should do? I´m leaning very strongly towards manually stopping the resizing of the DB/TB squadrons and just pull the newly arrived fighter squadrons off deck when they arrive.

Suggestion/thoughts/ideas are very welcome. [:)]

You can do what you want, of course - how about a mix? Some fighter-heavy carriers to guarantee that he'll impale himself on your CAP & you can follow up with a more balanced strikeforce against this carriers with the rest?

I have to be Cassandra again. Sigh. [:)]

They re-size because historically by this time the IJN was gone. Midway and the Battle of the Phil. Sea and Leyte Gulf and subs killed the carriers. The issue was kamis and the issue was supporting landings. Well, surprise! Those are your issues too. You just still have a KB to worry about.

So my advice is just that--worry. But don't centralize your planning around it. The era of big carrier battles changing the war's outcome is over. You need to MOVE on land, forward. You need carriers to protect APAs and AKAs from kamis. You still have not faced them in numbers, and I fear you are getting a little cocky about them. Trust me; they are back there behind the lines forming up. And when 500 of them come in one day you'll be very happy you don't have TBs sitting on deck.

If the KB comes and you have lots of fighters, what's the problem? You knock out his attack wing and he goes away once more. Sure, the carriers live but so what? You need real estate. He needs to stall you. Think and act like it's 1945, not early 1943. You'll do fine.

Have you missed operation "hulk smash"? [:D]

I´m not sure that resizing the air squadrons is actually going to add any defensibility to the CV fleet. Is having a 500 plane CAP instead of a 300 going to change anything? According to GJ the "magic" limit is 300 CAP. Any more and there won´t be enough fire passes anyway. Or have I misunderstood something?

I think you've misunderstood something. [8D]

A lot depends on how split up the carriers are, how many hexes apart, etc. You need each chunk capable of defending itself to the utmost. And how good the fighters are. A squadron of Corsairs is worth what? 1.5 squadrons of Hellcats?

Edit: Also, these ops as you get close in tend to be multi-day and more fighters accounts for damage and fatigue. Even if GJ is right, how many fighters do you need on-scene to get 300 to engage? For five straight days?

Remember too that this is what the replenishment CVEs are for, this era, far forward. Also, remember that on Jan. 1 your AEs play Cinderella and can suddenly do underway replenishment of your AA ammo. All so you can move in range and get some forward operating bases.

Also remember that GreyJoy's issues took place before the beta fixed super-coordination. Having more fighters on CAP means that many more kami strikes have to come in before your CAP is worn out.

I have had some luck so far keeping the CVs in the same hex. Key is to NEVER use full speed. If you do they are likely to end up all over the map. I´ve tried to keep things as balanced as possible in each TF. So if anyone ends up alone they will have some CAP up.

I already have almost all squadrons on the CVs flying Corsairs. The ones doing escort duty uses the Hellcats though. Might have to reconfigure that a bit when/if I resize. Its just that I hate losing striking power at this stage. There is still plenty of opportunity for fast CV raids and I feel the resize shifts the CVs to a defensive tool instead of a offensive one. Having 500 strike planes is a big hammer. Having 200 is just a "meh" that likely won´t penetrate any kind of CAP/LRCAP.

Decisions! [:D]

Can't you use Corsairs on strike/in raids at low altitude, to take advantage of their strafe skills (you did train Strafe, right? That is a thing people train, right?) and bomb load?

I was going to mention that was before the air model changes, but I don't really understand them. [:)]
