He's a chicken

Post by herbieh »

14/12/42

I have sunk buggar all this game, taunted him about the kiwis and the cricket, and he still wont attack

B26s and p38s operating out of lunganville creamed nevea that turn.
Ive abandoned it as a air base any way, so who cares?
Been spending the last few turns re distributing troops, and forming up a fast reaction convoy at rabual.
Admiralty islands are now being built up.
KB pilots are still rated in the 80's on many of the ships.

Come on wobbly, have a go ya mug!!!!![:'(][:'(][:'(][:'(]

It Begins Yaaaahhhh!!!!!

Post by herbieh »

A posting for several days play, after yet another computer repair
At long last the great Wobbly counterstroke appears to begin

Will he be too clever by half/, or will his clinical, calculating detail obseessed way prevail?
I have to admit I still felt a wave of anticipation, even a bit of a thrill as the replay began, fine testimony to this game.
He has been pounding and reconning Nevea for days.
To the West all is very quiet. Mmmmmm
So, the CVE has been dispatched to the North of Nevea, and will play KB, while KB herself slips from shortlands, and slowly crawls towards woodlark.
Ive stated that that place will be the centre of my defence.
All the BBs are being constantly fuelled every turn.

Thunderstorms are still everywhere, and are subs, several attacks that turn.
And then the thrill, as MSWs enter nevea, and Wobbly E mails me that He can see KB to the north - has the little CVE done her job?

I detach a single dd to intercept the msws, knowing full well they probably will be gone by the next turn.
The CVE is ordered to loop around the top of Nevea, look menacing, and head towards the map edge
KB slides to Woodlark, and still under thunderstorm cover heads towards Gilli Gilli
I resist all temptation to send anything to Nevea,Wobbly has never, ever hit only 1 place at once, so why should this be different

Next day, and 500 para troops capture Nevea - now that was unexpected
What to do?[:(][:(][:(]
OK, if nothing happens elswhere, after 5 days, a big fast transport will counter, and Nevea will be contested, draw out his carriers, and lets have it on

Worse, seagulls all about near Rennell island, I think Lunga is about to get a visit, buggar, 2 squads of Betties are going to be creamed I think
But Im going to hold my nerve, no counter until I really know what is up, I must smash the main effort.

KB is the key, and she remains hidden still.
At last a chance to hit him[:@][:@][:@][:@]

Decisions

Post by herbieh »

Ok, nothing happened that turn, but I did spend ages agonising over decisions.
I really believe Nevea is a fient, but if ignored it will grow like a cancer.
So, Decision, take it back, or wait

Ill wait about 4 more days, then fient myself, look like Im coming big time, then see if that triggers a wobbly attack elswhere.
With that in mind 10 transports will leave Munda tomorrow, and pick up a regiment of troops at irau that are in the jungle, ( ambush position), and proceed to nevea under cover of the single CVE.
KB will attempt the Gilli gilli channel, lots of subs, and IM very nervous.
I must not commit to the wrong place.
If nevea grows quickly, then Irau is next.
If not, then Gilli Gilli is my guess, and I hope so, lots of airfields in range, and woodlark is pretty strong.
Recieved 27 Nells today, but no base force in Truk for another 10 days, piss poor planning that!!![:'(][:-]

Just wanted you to know that someone was reading your excellent AAR. I am going to be in approximately the same position you are shortly. I hope you can fend off the US onslaught. I'm going to keep KB and BBTF's at the ready, and then when the US hits...hit back. Like the CVE KB feint...excellent! Hang in there buddy you're doing an excellent job.[&o]
If you can read this, thank a teacher;
If it's in English, thank a veteran.

Thanks for the input.
The game has slowed a bit, WITP has taken piority, and Ive had a horror run with my computer.

Very interesting developments today, a fast transport run entered Nevea (good old remote controlled radio detection and transmitting intelligence gathering super minefield) told me so
My counter is loading at irau, and a small force of 1 CL and 4 DD will "wave the flag" as part of "the attempt"

The bad part of the day was the " I can detect silent carrier at 500 mile range routine carge ship and I will retreat task force operating near cairns" MY lurking CVs ahve been blown
Buggar!!!

The mini CVE launched zeros on a sweep over Wunpunko, no action.
I think the game is up for them to, only 3 hexes away from nevea and no attack launched on the sfast transports, wobbly must have guessed.
Now can I out counter guess his counter guess, or will I have to out, out counter guess his out counter guess[:'(][:'(][:'(]

Im Jinxned!!!!

Post by herbieh »

lets see
last September, memo to wife, lets get cable, so I can send and recieve mail easier
Ill pay
So, She gets the connection, I wait 1 month to get networked
Then I cop a virus, down goes box for a week
Fix it
then blow up power supply
1 week, fix it
Then lose internet connection for a week
Fix it
Then have another major system lockup
Fix it
Buy new computer
Load it, load all games
Now cant get onto intermet, have to use wifes for mail
Then unable to play UV, no saves
2 weeks of re installing, and trying to recover data from old box
And so, finally today, we get back to the war
I was so pleased just to resume this game thay I hardly plotted a thing
A enemy pt boat hit a mine at nevea
Tonight I hope 1cl and 3 dd will attack other boats there.
2 transports with troops are just a day out, being covered(I hope) by the single CVE
This really is a half hearted attempt to take the place back, want wobbly to think Im concentrating on this side of the map, meanwhile KB continues to lurk of GG

Its good to be back

RE: Im Jinxned!!!!

Post by herbieh »

here is the update after crissy, been away from this computer
Thunderstorms, and Im trying to load troops from Irau, and one AP wears a sub torp, but I think I sink her.
2 APs arrive nevea, and begin to unload, can the paras be ejected?
KB is spotted again, thats blown it, she is ordered back to shortlands
I order 1CL, 3dd to hit nevea tonight
The mini cve is on LRCAP, another regiment is loading at irau.
I will try to take nevea back

24/11/42
wobbly air trys to hit nevea, and misses
one of the APs hits a mine
OK, so far, so good
Then it got nasty
Wunpunko air gets into the fray, and itis awesome, my APs are pounded, thats ok, most of the troops are ashore
More air attacks, the CL and DD duck and weave
Safe!!!
then another raid, and CVE Chunyo wears 2 1000lbs, she is out of the war, Ill get her home, but the zeros are no longer available over Nevea.
I detach the DDs from her, bombard Wunpunko!

25/11/42
Another AP strikes a mine
PM is crated, P38s are here!
My DDs sweep into Wunpunko, sink a PT boat, and depart.
Impressive air power hits Nevea, and even more powre sinks my CL
This is getting messy
I deliberate attack at Nevea, 1998 troops vs 1857
The battle is joined

26/11/42
My mines hit another AP!
Enemy DMS and DDs enter nevea harbour, and Seagulls are about. I dont spot his CAs.
A big convoyis spotted leaving brisbane, is this an invasion fleet?. It must be big to be spotted at this range.
PM pounded again
Nevea pounded again

And I spot APs approching Nevea
More paras fly in

I have to make a decision.

Neavea is given up, I will not commit the heavies, not in that air power range.

27/11/42
thunderstorms, and wobbly unloads a division I reckon at Nevea
Im pulling base forces out of Irau, and KB is at shortlands.
That was short, and nasty

28/11/42
Want to see how to conduct an invasion, Ive just suffered the perfect one, well done wobbly
A huge battle fleet pounds nevea, and the Americal division attacks.
And that is that
A classic attack. was I kidding myself that I could hold it or what?
I lose 1000 troops, 1 CL,6 APs 1 cve damaged badly, and about 10 zeros in that short , sharp slaughter
He lost a pt boat and a sub.
But at least now the most boring game ever posted is finally getting going again.

Still here, plugging away

Post by herbieh »

The game keeps crawling along.
Well wobbly already has fighters moved into Nevea, and His LBA has declared the entire area a death zone, a final AP trying to crawl away goes down
A PG also is killed by a sub in the area as well
A last supply convoy into Irau is hit by Hudsons, the air power he must have by now would be impressive to see
I have only nominal planes at Lunga, I feel that it will probably be abruptly closed down if he attacks up this way, so Munda and Shortland groan under the weight of my A/C, if he doesnt fully close it down Lunga can be quickly reinforced.
The big problem is KB, its system damage is very bad, zuikaka is up to 23, shokaka 18, the others in the high teens.
What to do. I have been debating returning it for ages, but IM sure its mere presence is giving wobbly pause. A fleet in being.
Ill keep it in theatre, it will be terrible though once we do have a CV on CV battle, he will soon have far better a/c, and how many CVs and CVLs and CVEs does he have by now?
AH well, lets see what happens next.

Monsters of the deep

Post by herbieh »

barely has the smoke over nevea cleared, and Wobbly strikes again.
Ive been playing UV for years now, and always as Japan, always hoping that BB Yamato and Mushia would together get into a fight. But always it seems to be that they never engage, or yamato gets a torpedo instantly upon arrival on map, or they just plain miss the enemy.
Not today[:'(][:'(][:'(][:'(][:'(][:'(]
I have 6 APs unloading stores at irau, some are damaged, a nice fat prize for the taking....
Admiral Yamaguchi is lurking, looking for trouble...
DMS Hovey clearing minefield irau !
TFs reacting!.
And at 4000 yds the battle is joined
Yamato, Mushia,Kongo, CA tone, CL Kuma and 9DD vs CA Louisville, New ORleans , Astoria and 10 DD
Allies get surprise, and for the first minutes I appear to be getting a pasting, several DDs are hit. His CAs concentrate on the big boys. 8 inch hits, again and again.
No penetrations[:D]
range 2000 yrds
Kongo gets several 14inch hits on the louisville
And then finally, the big guns thunder
New orleans takes 3, 4, maybe 5 18inchers from yamato
Astoria swallows her bag of 18inchers from Mushia
torpedoes are launched, he misses, many of ours do not.
Both sides settle into a slug fest, it seems the DDs concentrate on each other
kongo concentrates on the DMS Hovey, 14 inch hits everywhere
But its the big boys that are doing the damage, hit repeatably by small 3, 4, 5, 8 inch shells they simply shrug them off.
range to 10000 yrds
And now the BBs really dish it out, repeatably hitting with main guns the allied CAs
And now enemy DDs begin sinking, 1, 2, 3.
A pause
And then at 6000 yds Yamaguchi re engages, this time he gains surprise
Mushia especially is very deadly
2 enemy CAs sink
Mushia hits a DD with 3? 18 inch shells.
Action ceases

A second task force of 6 DDs engages the allied cripples
The last Ca sinks.
2 more DDs are seen sinking, another is reported sunk at dawn

The damage bill
I scuttle 2 dds
4 are heavily damaged
1 will need to go to Truk as well

The BBs are ready to go, Kongo is 14 system damage, the giants not even 10
Tone and Kuma are lightly damaged, ready to go, and DDs are already

I claim 3 CAs sunk, and at least 7 DDs
banzia[:D][:D]

This should give Wobbly pause. On top of what is happening to him in WITP, its a wonder he still plays.
Im expecting more BBs to be released soon, its going to be an exciting few months
And tanaka is still in the wings.

Wobbly returns

Post by herbieh »

After a very pleasant wedding (according to him) Wobbly returns to the war.
A very quiet time after the battle of Irau, I have a stream of damaged DDs heading North to Truk.
I await his next effort.

It is nice to get the game up again.

Dont think many guys read this stuff anymore, write more for my amusement now, helps planning

very quiet turn again, massive shipping movements at Nevea, BBs( at least 2 TFs) and APs ect
His plan will be, pound Irau, Lunga using Nevea for LBA.
Me, all I can do is hunker down, be pounded, then await the invasion, and use Munda as the realitory base.
Im going to movee the troops out of lunga to one of the hexes next to the base, and leave them just 1 turn out.
They might avoid being pounded, and if I spot the invasion coming, move back in. Risky, but I fear a massive bombing campaign is coming...
If I can appear to be evacuating, even better

KB is at rabual, the BBs at Shortland
The west side of the map is quiet, too quiet[:'(][:'(][:'(]
if you get my drift.....
Only 50 days until I get some more CVLs, and Kaga and Akagi back
Got a squadron of Lillies today, they make good barge busters, but are just a one shot weapon in this game.

I still await the big attack.

RE: Wobbly returns

Well the game continues, although the posting is slow the game is still happening nearly a turn every night.
I am now convinced that Wobbly is trying for the I lost only 1 percent casualties compared to what I inflicted on herbie
Got a mail from him stating, Oh, Im just waiting for the corsairs and Hellcats.
Crikey!!!

And now he is complaining that he cant get 3 BBs, 4 CAs and 20 DDs released (note carefully friends how he avoids mentioning any CVLs I know are due as well)
Wobbly is an evil man
I just lost a PBEM in WITP against him, I aint going to lose this one!
(And a game against Tabpub -I look at my Navel and wonder If I will ever be a real General?)
Anyway, this war

The Sky turns black with B17s, and B26s above Buna, where 25 APs are unloading a huge supply run
Well were[8|]
Now the sky is black as over a dozen burn
OUCH!!!

BB South Dakato is spotted at Nevea, mmmmm
Lots of movement there, another stepping stoe

Next day, 4/12/42
Not a single combat report. nada, nix, none
Lots of AOs near Cairns

5/12/42
Still little to report, nothing important, unless you are a merchant sailor from the Buna Convoy, I lost count of how many ships I scuttled today, out of the whole convoy just 5 ships are viable.
I lost nearly 50% of sea lift this week, I now have to be very careful.

6/12/42
Well If Im going to be careful with APs , I better look after everything else.
Wobbly Subs are back, the water around Lunga is thick with them, lost a ML this day, and attacks happening everywhere.
You enter September feeling invincible
Come December, and the whole Defence appears totally fragile.

Tanaka, the whole fate of the empire rests on you and your Long Lances

Another couple of days of relatively quiet
Recieved 3 squadrons of bombers this week, 2 betties, 1 nell. Experience levels of 37, 33 and 44 respectively!!![X(][X(][X(][X(]

Also got a sq of lillies , better at 60

Wobbly is reconning Rennell island and Irau like crazy, also he must have some ships about as Kingfishers are sighted at Irau
Poor Port moresby is pounded again, 6 rufe rise to meet 40 heavy,30 medium bombers, escorted by p38s and beufighters
Im just laying doggo at the moment

As an experiment, Ive loaded a bucket6 load of barges at Lunga, and dispatch them to rennell island, lets see if anything reacts to them, and wastes a bit of ammo.

At nevea the remote control radio equipped mines sink one of his AKs
Im getting a bit nervous now....
