Agreed - while I think Cav is probably OP relative to Tank or Mech Corps, the idea that it is an amazing wonderweapon is strange to me. At best, you get 22 MPs. As long as your opponent is able to maintain a reasonably solid line in blizzard, there is no way you are going to have enough Cav Corps and enough MPs (even if miraculously they all get to 22 MPs) to wreck the German army with Cav Corps. Are they nice? Sure...and against an inexperienced German I suppose they could do a fair amount of damage...but against someone who knows what they are doing? Not really.

I was speaking in general, not just about the 1st winter rules (which has its own issues beyond just cav corps), I think the soviet cav needs a slight reduction in their ability to move through enemy controlled terrain as at the moment they basically perform like soviet mech/armor units, and they need far less support in tanks, trucks etc. Anyway I feel like Im now hijacking a really interesting AAR.... please continue!

Weeks 122-125

Post by M60A3TTS »

WEEKS 122 to 125 - 10/14/43 to 11/4/43

Greetings comrades. Mud and some snow has slowed operations in general across the front. Red Army units reports some advances in all vital sectors.

In the north, we are advancing westwards to close on the Moskva-Volga Canal. The enemy consists mostly of regimental-sized forces in this area, so we expect armies of the Leningrad Front and STAVKA in this area to participate in a general offensive once the ground hardens. 5th Shock Army is taking up positions south of Moscow to assist in mobile operations.

In the area of Minsk-Vilnius, persistent muddy conditions have limited the Red Army to attacks supported by massed artillery. Therefore gains have been modest.

In the south, our troops successfully advance against tiring fascist elements west of Krivoi Rog.

In administrative matters, General-Armii Fyodor Tolbukhin has assumed command of the North Causasus Front. General-Lt. Ivan Konev now commands 5th Shock Army. Ivan Chernaykhovsky of 2nd Shock Army has been promoted to General-Armii.

Weeks 126-127

Post by M60A3TTS »

WEEKS 126 to 127 - 11/11/43 to 11/18/43

Rain continued to hamper operations taking place in the Baltic States. Lead elements of General Rokossovsky's Western Front came to within 30 miles of Vilnius. General Purkaev reported Belorussian Front elements were 100 miles from the pre-war frontier.

In the Moscow sector, General Konev's 5th Shock Army pushed back German security units south of the city.

In the area of the Lower Dnepr where snow prevailed, General Tolbukhin's Caucasus Front isolated the Crimea and General Popov's 3rd Shock Army drove hard towards Nikolaev. German units were replaced by Rumanian ones guarding the entrances to the Crimea. Resistance in this area appeared to be weakening with few enemy mobile units identified.

Week 128

Post by M60A3TTS »

WEEK 128 - 10/25/43

In the area around Moscow, General Konev's 5th Shock continued to engage German units south of the city and weakening their resolve to hold the area.

In Baltic States operations, the Red Army advanced on a broad front towards Vilnius. German panzer reserves came under heavy attack by IL-2 sturmoviks, thereby hampering their effectiveness in reserve roles.

In the south, Nikolaev was liberated by elements of 4th Ukrainian Front under General-Armii Kirponos.

Overall, the Wehrmacht is shrinking in terms of quality infantry divisions. The fascist troops holding the line in a number of places are now either regiments or second rate divisions. In turn, this is reducing the ability of farfarer to release panzer units for anything other than reserve missions.

i think that the mud saved the german troops from beeing cut off by advancing soviet tank armies to the baltic states.

very impressive is the high number of guards units which i can see on the map. a result of the hard but victorious fightiung in ukraine and belourussia.

WEEK 129 - 12/2/43

Attacks continue to grind down Axis formations on all fronts.

General Artemev's 39th Army is across the Moskva-Volga Canal in force.

Meanwhile, farfarer has launched an attack of his own with several panzer and SS divisions in the area southeast of Vyazma.

1st and 5th Shock Armies are on the flanks of the penetration in order to press it should the enemy advance continue.

Week 130

Post by M60A3TTS »

WEEK 130 - 12/9/43

General Konev's 11th Guards Cavalry Corps entered West Moscow after elements of the German 454th Security Division were defeated in a brief battle. In the provisional Soviet capital of Kharkov, preparations were underway to return the seat of government to its rightful place. Stalin vows that all of Moscow will be in Soviet hands by years end. Citizens in the German occcupied zones of Moscow were reportedly rising up against the fascist occupiers.

South of Moscow, German offensive operations were short lived as by their own admissions, they were unable to ascertain the level of Red Army defenses. Panzers were reportedly withdrawing to the north.

In Baltic operations, Red Army units stormed into Vilnius. Attacks continued over the entire length of the Western and Belorussian Fronts.

To the south, fighting was comparatively moderate as Soviet forces reoriented themselves for a further push in the western and northwestern direction. In one significant battle, 1st SS Panzer and 27th Panzer Divisons suffered the losss of nearly eighty vehicles when attacked by 3rd Shock Army and were obliged to retreat.

Week 131

Post by M60A3TTS »

WEEK 131 - 12/16/43

A week of glorious news for the Soviet people.

By way of radio intercepts, it is learned that panzer General Hoth has been killed in action. There are also indications that the commander of Army Group Center has been shot for failing to stop Red Army operations in the Baltic.

The Germans abandon their positions north of Moscow. Many of their unts appear to be positioning for evacuation to the west by rail. General Konev takes North Moscow and the German 454th Security Division is surrounded in the city proper. In recognition of this great event, Konev is promoted to General-Armii. 1st Shock Army that was originaly sent east to counter the short-lived German attacks south of Moscow now prepares to return to the Baltics for operations with Southwestern Front.

The advance in the Baltic region continues. Gains of 20 miles are made in most of this area.

To the south, Kivovograd is liberated. Red Army units attack to the northwest.

In the Crimea, the Rumanians rout and retreat. Red Army units break the terrain bottlenecks and are free to push into the open.

It is estimated that in the last six months of war, the Wehrmacht has lost three quarters of a million men and one third of its artllery. This is no doubt aiding to the success of Red Army victories.

In recognition of its performance in battle, 4th Tank Army is redesignated 4th Guards Tank Army.

A note on the air war. After one year of conflict, Soviet pilots had combined to shoot down 500 enemy planes. Eighteen months later, two fighter divisions, the 38th (La-5 series) and the 66th (Yak-9 series) each have downed over 500 fascist air machines.

Good read.

What is German OOB at?

You able to pocket any units every turn or are you waiting until summer of 44 to make bigger gains per turn?

German OOB is a little over 2.9 million with 2.67 million active. He's losing between 40-50k men a week which isn't sustainable. Soviet active force by comparison is slightly over 7 million and remaining steady to slightly growing.

I don't have much in the way of pocket making, but the constant grinding will likely make it a moot point. Even his reserve activations aren't impeding my progress to any real degree.

Well he fights gallantly and with "panache". Made for an entertaining game even if his style of play led to his doom.

Thanks for up date. With the coming summer I am sure you get some pockets and the speed west will be even quicker.

I agree - I know I thought that things were about to doom M60 not that long ago...and really, isn't it more fun playing for keeps than not to lose (not that I can say I always do this)!
