Me 264 Behemoth

Not that it isn't a highly appropriate name, but what happened to the moniker "angel"?
Civil war? What does that mean? Is there any foreign war? Isn't every war fought between men, between brothers?

Harlock,

Well it is all to do with the backstory I thought up for the Japanese and Allies. My idea was that the first time the Allies saw an Me-264 they would find it awe-inspiring but after they realised what it could do they'd use more descriptive and earthy terminology.

The Ki-264 Behemoth is the guided-missile armed anti-shipping counterpart to the Ki-264 Angel ( ground attack version carrying 100Kg bombs ) and is absolutely lethal against vessels underway and/or in port. As a Japanese player I'd use it ceaselessly for port attacks and expect to take a toll of all Allied shipping, including enemy CVs and BBs as the Hs-293X has a fair old armour-penetrating potential.

Things are hotting up. I am seeing a lot of IJN naval activity around Java and expect the first enemy counter-landings momentarily. Personally I think he's waited too long but I'm happy to let these strikes go in as fending them off will buy me some time and let me kill some more Japanese troops and ships.

Why is he still hitting my supplies and airfields? He should be hitting my resources. Obviously though hitting my resources will play into my hands in the long run as my plan is to hold long enough to force jagdfluger to "scorch earth" China and then use that supply desert as an impermeable barrier to an IJA advance into Burma from China whilst I pull the vast majority of the Chinese army back into Burma and, eventually, launch it into Malaysia and Thailand as a single 20,000 AV strong stack.

I had my weakest unit attack in order to check the enemy's strength. Interestingly enough the enemy's adjusted AV is less than half of their total AV. I figure they must be just about out of supplies and ready to be shock-attacked into oblivion. A few more days of bombardment will make sure though.

It looks like he is finally clearing the Phillipines. Good for him but something he should have done ages ago.

Mister, mister, shouldn't you really bomb Rangoon where all these short-ranged Soviet dive-bombers are basing from? Mister, please won't you attack Rangoon again [:D]. That's basically what I'm communicating with this strike but jagdfluger is too good to fall for this until such time as he clears Java.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 06/21/42

Today sees the first amphibious invasions of Java... I've been seeing increased naval activity recently and a huge gaggle of IJN CVs, CAs etc at Christmas Island 300 miles west of Java and so have been expecting an invasion.... Today isn't it though, today is just a test to find out where my forces are weakest. Why did he have to send in APs? Well he had been flying parachutists into Merak and Teloekbetoeng for the past week or so but each time they had flown in I had shot down the transports before they could drop their troops.

So, he sacrifices two transports...

I hadn't hit back before because I wanted to wait until JUST before jagdfluger was to strike before complicating his operational difficulties. Japanese Unit(s) Wiped Out at Merak/Serang [Java] by attrition!!!

IJA units at Teloekbetoeng have also been wiped out.

I have roughly 800 AV of armoured troops at Batavia and think I will commit them to Merak and Teloekbetoeng. Coming ashore directly into the face of a tank diviion equivalent ought to take the starch out of the Japanese troops.

Java re-invaded !!!

Post by Nemo121 »

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 06/22/42

Well today saw 6 IJN CV fighter squadrons throw themselves against Java in an orgy of mutual slaughter. A total of over 200 fighters are downed and in a suicidal gesture of gallantry Allied fighters and dive-bombers attack KB --- and make it through a massively superior CAP ( again this mod sees leakers when normally one wouldn't ).

This is a disastrous strike. I didn't want any strikes to die against IJN CAP but 46 of my fighters do just that. DAMN!!!! I have replacements but I really could have used those 50 fighters to help maintain my numbers into the 2nd day of strikes. DAMN!!! This means having to abandon Batavia for a couple of days and play hide and seek with the IJN and IJA strike groups while my fighter groups rebuild.

The Airacobras shine in the air-to-surface role -- no wonder the Russians loved 'em!
Civil war? What does that mean? Is there any foreign war? Isn't every war fought between men, between brothers?

RE: Java re-invaded !!!

Post by Nemo121 »

Well yesterday was a busy day with 136 Allied and 86 Japanese planes being downed. Today I wanted a great slaughter - not just to thin his pilot rank but also to create the stage for the rapid fleeing of my trapped transports.

How is this being accomplished? Simple, 2 days of strikes in the face of enemy CAP and FlAK are enough to drop the morale and raise the fatigue of any attacking IJN and IJA bomber units significantly. That will give me 1 day of light strikes and 1 day of moderate strikes --- which gives me enough time to get some of my ships away.

I am looking to sortie 240 ships including some 60 combat vessels. The combat vessels will be expended first --- many of them today in order to draw enemy bombers onto my CAP ---- to be followed by a major AK and AP gaggle making for Colombo under cover of the fatigue and morale hits the bombers have taken over the last two days. Out of the 180 I'll be lucky of 60 make it but that'll still give me 960 ships lost in return for some 300 IJN ships and a real chance to mount an invasion of Malaysia in 4 months time when I've re-organised and brought my new shipping and fighter forces on-line.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
TF 71 encounters mine field at Hilo [Hawaii] (116,74)

Japanese Ships
PC Ch 25

Excellent, yet another PC dies on the minefields in Hawaii. These aren't MSWs which immediately respawn so their loss hurts jagdfluger --- not in the short term but in the long-term and this IS very much a long-term game.

Japanese Unit(s) surrounded at Geelong [Australia]

And below you can see the losses for the day. As you can see enemy losses are extremely high indeed with half a month's worth of trained pilots being removed from their roster in just this single 24 hour period. But still jagdfluger seems to be able to send new pilots into action. I honestly don't know how he can sustain these loss rates.

Slowly but surely the Soviet air force is improving its combat readiness and rebuilding level bomber and dive-bomber units. By October 1942 ( when I get a significant number of P-38s flowing to my USAAF formations and plan to mount my next major aerial offensive --- what's happening at the moment is just a quotidienne sort of attrition, albeit massively so --- ) the Soviet air force will be able to field a good half-dozen MiG-3 units which should suffice to provide sufficient cover for Chungking and all of my Burmese bases. I can then operate tactical bombers from the smaller bases, freijagd missions from Chungking and look at peeling back the enemy aerial umbrella using USAAF units while my Soviet units provide almost-impenetrable CAP.

Honestly back in February if you had told me things would be going this well in the air at this stage of the war I wouldn't have believed you but it really does look as though India is going to be a going concern into October 42 and once I reach October 42 I think India really should be fairly safe.

Losses have been absolutely horrific though. Absolutely horrific!!!

Very interesting results. Despite the fact that the Il-2Ms carry rear-firing MGs they didn't manage to damage a single Ki-109. On the other hand the Il-2Ms do appear to be able to fight their way through light enemy CAP at acceptable loss rates --- particularly when you remember that I get 2 Il-2s and 3 Il-2Ms every day to replace losses.

25 Japanese planes flutter to the ground in flames in the face of my 27 defending fighters but the bombers get through and destroy a tithe of my planes - particularly B-25s - on the ground. That's ok though, I'm planning to upgrade my B-25 squadrons to B-17s and base them out of Rangoon in the near future anyways and I have almost 200 A-20s and B-26s in the reserve pool to continue the attritional play.

Not bad the SB-2Ms manage to drop a couple of 100 Kg bombs onto enemy AKs and AMCs. Would that this would lure jagdfluger into trying to close Manilla again but, unfortunately, he's too good to be distracted that easily. He'll try to smash Batavia once and for all first and then turn to Manilla.

And a much larger force impales itself on KB proper west of Java.

8 B-25s and 2 Avengers break through the enemy CAP and FlAK and drop on the enemy CVs but fortune is with the Japanese and they evade everything thrown at them. Still, it is nice to see that a smallish force of bombers ( 50 unescorted bombers ) can break through a similarly-sized CAP and threaten the enemy CVs. It'd have been nicer if I'd hit something though [:D]

Well, so far it is all pretty much what I expected except for the misfortune surrounding the Wasp. It looks like one of the two torpedo hits scored by those 4 Kates hit the magazine and she went down in seconds. Wonderful !!!!

In other news 174 Allied planes and 122 Japanese planes are destroyed. I begin replacing my losses immediately but I wonder how long the IJN Zero stocks can hold out for. Barely a week ago I was announcing the 1,000th Zero destroyed. Today we are Zero number 1,197. He's 200 Zeroes and 200 trained IJN fighter pilots in the past week. He only gets 216 per month and if we're being really picky about things he's lost another 70 IJN pilots today in Rufes, Bettys, Kates and Vals. His pilot replacement potential is just much higher than I envisioned.

On the other hand I AM getting 1:1 kill ratios in the air vs his Zeroes and amn't even putting my best crates in the air. Sure there are a lot of Spitfires, Seafires and P-40Es in the air but there are also a hell of a lot of P-40Bs, P-39Ds, I-16s and Hurricanes and they are also managing to down Zeroes. I am interpreting that as meaning that some of those pilots he is sending into battle aren't fully trained.

I've got to keep the pressure up but I'm down from a high of 4,500 trained planes and crew on-map to barely 2,400 trained planes and pilots on-map and while I'm getting a lot of aerial reinforcements over the next 3 months in preparation for the October aerial offensive an awful lot can happen in 90 days.

RE: Java re-invaded !!!

Post by Nemo121 »

Umm 5 of my CVs sunk ( 3 US, 2 British ) in return for 1 IJN CV. Also down about 14 BBs ( with another 2 trapped in batavia which will be sunk in time ) in return for 3 IJN CVs. To be fair though I lost two of those CVs and 11 BBs within the first week of the war when he hit Singers, Pearl and hunted down my scattered forces at sea. I had about 200 ships sunk or in sinking condition by the end of Day 1 of the war so an awful lot of those sunk ships were completely unavoidable. The 250 ships sunk in retaking Java were entirely by choice though [:D]

The cheerful news is that come 1944 he's gonna miss those BBs as they all would convert to more IJN CVAs and be a real b*tch to kill. So, really, I'm down 5 CVs for 4 of his.

If one doesn't count CVs then the IJN is down to 2/3rd strength with a significant portion of that 2/3rd damaged and in dry dock. Overall I'd say probably 50% of the IJN is currently available for offensive operations. Its bloody as all hell but, then again, I'm facing a massively ramped up Japan in 1942. The tide will start to turn in 1943 and by the end of 1943 I should be in the driving seat.

Right now though he's out-producing me handily and will probably continue to do so until my new generation of fighters comes online in early 43 so I'm just trying to keep him as far away from my vital interests as I can until such time as I actually have the numbers to fight him fair and square ( which won't be for another 6 months ).

Night Time Surface Combat, near Christmas I [IO] at 15,62

But two can play at that game... It appears Jagdfluger is using Christmas Island to refuel his CVs. I've tried to bide my time by waiting until he was at the end of a patrol cycle before escaping from Java and now I'm sacrificing some DDs to force his tankers away from Christmas Island. My hope is that he won't have the fuel in his bunkers to sprint north toward Java ( sinking my shipping the whole way ) and by forcing his tankers away from Christmas Island I can delay his refuelling.

If I have guessed right then more of my ships will survive and I'll be able to consider my next tranche of invasions aimed against Sumatra/Andaman Island within the next month.

Yay, the first G9M shot down by Allied aircraft of the war. My aerial forces are being frantically rebuilt and Batavia is quickly nearing a Size 5 airfield which will give me the ability to base 200+ fighters and 40 or so strike aircraft there on a permanent basis. I'm also going to build up a base in the interior to Level 4 and base many planes there also.

RE: Java re-invaded !!!

Post by Capt. Harlock »

Very forward thinking . . . but it looks like his CV's have already taken a heavy toll of Allied shipping.
Civil war? What does that mean? Is there any foreign war? Isn't every war fought between men, between brothers?

Bah, Iosef Stalin has nothing on me as far as insensitivity to casualties goes. I've lost almost 900 ships at this stage but the IJN has lost 300. So I'm wearing him down too and he is getting relatively weaker as I am replacing my losses more quickly than he is his. Combined with the fact that I don't plan to need my shipping too much for 1943 and 44 ( I don't think a meat-grinder campaign across the Pacific is in my interests ) and I can take these losses.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 06/26/42

Sub-laid minefields, a love affair re-discovered. Those things are just lethal to Japanese shipping, especially since I've managed to remove a lot of MSWs and DMS from the IJN OOB.

In a few days time I get about 150 P-35s as replacements. They will have 40 or so Exp and so can't do much BUT if I send them all in against the Mikes and stiffen them with my first P-38 squadron I think I might actually manage to down quite a few Ki-109s and, as importantly, protect my P-38s from attrition and cull those inexperienced pilots from my ranks. Once they are properly culled I can load them onto transports and send them across to India/China in time for my October aerial offensive.

Ah, my Pe-2s and those 3 squadrons of B-26s I've labelled as disposable and sent into Java are proving their worth. Tankers and AOs are incredibly precious for Japan and I'm beginning to catch a few of them.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on TF at 14,57

But now its time for the IJN's slaughter of my forces. To be fair though the IJN DID have to refuel yesterday and this has allowed even my 10 knot ships to open up a good lead and possibly get away. All of my 15 knot+ ships are going to make it which includes most of my DDs and even a single CL ( which I'm amazed at [:D] ) as well as some of my biggest APs and AKs.

The fact that more of my AKs and APs are going to survive than I had reckoned on ( I love it when a sneaky under-dog's plan comes together ) means that I am going to be able to mount the invasion of Andaman/Sumatra more quickly than I had previously imagined. This realisation has caused me to order my Chinese army into action. The first 3,000 AV+ stack has been ordered into action with the second 3000 AV stack wending its way down from their reconstitution areas in India en route to Burma and Japanese held territory beyond. Why? Well I want to draw the 5000 AV the Japanese brought to bear on Manilla into sideshows where I can more easily hold them in place with disposable forces while my US and UK strength in India grows.

Overall the escape is going better than can be expected. I'm already planning the next minor Allied offensives. These will occur at:
a) Rahaeng,
b) Tavoy,
c) Andaman Island,
d) Coal Harbour.

Its definitely time for me to begin trying to stretch the IJA ground forces.

RE: Java re-invaded !!!

Post by Capt. Harlock »

Kind of ruthless . . . I don't suppose you could send them to flight school for a refresher instead? [;)]
Civil war? What does that mean? Is there any foreign war? Isn't every war fought between men, between brothers?

Aye, ruthless it is but, then again, one would expect no less from me [:D]... You're talking to the guy who pushed 200,000 men ashore on Java despite having no air or naval aircover [8D]

In any case training takes time and I want them ready in time for mid-October, need 3 months to ship them to Oz and from there to Burma and thus they need to be trained up by mid-July. The only way this can occur is if the initial cadre of pilots get themselves killed ASAP and replaced en masse by my MUCH more experienced pool pilots.

Strategy, the art of being less than human when it comes to the personal sequelae of decisions.

Japanese ground losses:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
TF 87 encounters mine field at Takao [Formosa] (47,45)

Japanese Ships
AK Reiyo Maru, Mine hits 1, on fire

The minefield at Takao really is just the minefield that keeps giving and giving. My bigger minefield at Tokyo hasn't hit anything yet.

I'm hoping that, eventually, these raids are going to build up enough airfield damage that the Ki-109s can't fly any further CAP.

No Japanese losses

No Allied losses

Japanese ground losses:
9 casualties reported

Port hits 2

It looks like there are too few ships at Bangkok for my bombers to reliably achieve hits. I'll try for Singapore soon. With the IJN forming up for the invasion of Java late next month I can be sure to find a few CAs and CLs to hit. I can't do much vs the BBs BUT if the BBs head for Java without heavy CA, CL and DD support then my torpedo bombers should have no trouble sinking them. Already I've got a solid core of 36 B-26s and 15 Avengers on Java ready to put torpedoes into anything big and unmanoeuvrable which comes into range without massive fighter cover.

Day Air attack on Rahaeng [Thailand] , at 31,36

Japanese ground losses:
24 casualties reported

Airbase hits 6
Airbase supply hits 4
Runway hits 12

The Il-2Ms really do do a good job of surviving in the face of enemy fighters. And since I get 5 a day I can keep up this loss rate for the forseeable future. This is a foretaste of the sort of arithmetic the Allies can perform from mid-43.... "I've lost 10 planes, he's lost 2 but I can replace those 10 more easily than he can replace his planes and pilots." I'm not quite there yet but soon, soon I will be.

One of my big escape convoys gets clobbered, c'est la vie. Overall the escape is going much better than expected as the day after it began the IJN CVs ALL had to refuel and reprovision their sorties. I know self-praise is no praise but my escape really was timed perfectly, one day later and they'd have been fully provisioned, one day earlier and they'd have been able to sprint into the middle of my fast escapees and capped the slower ones as they waddled past later.

it always helps to be lucky [:D]

I found the Beaufighter VIC to very good barge busters. Nice amount of cannons, good range (7/9), and carry a combo of 250 & 500 lb GP bombs. This is in CHS, but you might have them in your mod. Since I have PDUs on, I can get my Wirraways upgraded to them while I await the Kitt IIIs to come out.

The Phillipines are going to be cleared up. This is great as it robs the IJAF of easy training targets. In the long run this is going to hurt jagdfluger. We're just going to game till 1st July and then I'll upgrade my Dutch squadrons ( 5 or 6 recon units, 4 bomber units and 4 fighter units... a not inconsiderable boost for my forces ).
John Dillworth: "I had GreyJoy check my spelling and he said it was fine."
Well, that's that settled then.
